Politics › Girls Who Escaped Boko Haram Defy Kidnappers, Go Back To School by resty4(op): 9:04pm On Feb 18, 2015
To Asabe and Ruth, attending school isn't a chore -- it's an act of bravery.
The two Nigerian sisters were among the more than 200 schoolgirls who were abducted from the Chibok community by Boko Haram last April. They managed to escape hand-in-hand from the terrorist group.
In August, a worker from the American University of Nigeria (AUN) arrived on their family’s doorstep in the country's northern …(Borno) state, The Guardian reported.
The AUN worker, Godiya, was able to help connect the sisters with scholarships to the university through a fund launched in support of the girls who'd been kidnapped. The #EducateOurGirls campaign has raised at least $50,000 in donations, according to The Guardian, which has allowed the university to educate 10 girls for one year.
To Godiya, providing the scholarships to girls like Asabe and Ruth wasn't just another task to complete for her employer -- the Boko Haram abductions were personal.
The 27-year-old’s own sister had been one of the kidnapped girls who, too, escaped. Months after the mass abduction, Godiya had timidly asked university officials if they could help her sister return to a classroom, according to the Globe and Mail.
In Chibok, schools were closed, as community leaders lived in fear of another attack.
“Godiya came into my office and, really quietly, she told me that her sister was one of the girls who had escaped, and she and all the other girls were just there in Chibok, doing nothing,” Margee Ensign, AUN president, told The Guardian.
Inspired by Godiya's request, Ensign set up the scholarship fund, which also helps provide an education to other Nigerian girls and boys in need. It was then up to Godiya to travel by motorbike throughout Chibok -- overcoming heavy rainstorms and the threats of deadly wildlife -- to find girls willing to accept the scholarships.
It wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Many girls were hesitant to return to the classroom, which would put them more at risk of abduction. But for the girls that Godiya has helped connect with an education, the risk is worth the value of an education -- and their bravery is inspiring others, too.
“Ten more parents just sort of showed up at our gate and asked us to take their daughters,” Ensign told The Guardian.
While many may applaud Godiya and the school’s efforts, 219 of the girls kidnapped by Boko Haram have yet to be reunited with their families. Many of them may have been sold into slavery or forced into early marriage.
Last Saturday marked 300 days since Boko Haram’s mass abduction in Chibok, and children's rights activist Malala Yousafzai didn't let the day pass by in silence.
“If these girls were the children of politically or financially powerful parents, much more would be done to free them,” Yousafzai wrote on her nonprofit’s blog.
“But they come from an impoverished area of north-east Nigeria and sadly little has changed since they were kidnapped.”http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/girls-who-escaped-boko-haram-defy-kidnappers-go-back-to-school/202110/

Politics › March In Solidarity For Soldiers, FG Urges by resty4(op): 6:31pm On Feb 18, 2015
The Federal Government on Wednesday called on Nigerians to emulate their Nigerien counterparts and march in solidarity for soldiers fighting insurgency in the North-Eastern part of the country.
Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, who made the call at a press briefing on the war against insurgency, said regional cooperation had been helpful in the reclaiming of territories from the Boko Haram insurgents.
He said a march for the soldiers would boost their morale and strengthen their resolve as they fight against the Islamist militants.
Omeri said, “The centre commends the recent offer of assistance by the United States in the areas of training and other logistics for the military forces in the fight against Boko Haram.
“Equally, the assistance of Nigeria’s immediate neighbours in this anti-terror campaign is highly commendable. In that regard, therefore, we urge Nigerians to emulate the recent action of citizens of Niger Republic who publicly embarked on a solidarity march in support of their military for defending their country.
“This, we believe, will greatly boost the morale of our soldiers who have laid down their lives for the unity, integrity and security of our dear nation and her citizens.”
Omeri who is also the Director General of the National Orientation Agency said there has been increased regional cooperation between the countries of the Lake Chad Basin resulting in the recapture of territories by the Nigerian military and the multi-national forces which are, simultaneously, shielding off new attacks.
According to him, the fight against Boko Haram is gaining the regional solidarity it deserves.
He added, “Nigerian troops have recaptured the towns of Monguno and Marte, among others, while military operations are continuing at other locations in the area.
“However, because of the heavy bombardment of various Boko Haram hideouts, there has been massive dispersal of these elements to various locations including the numerous Internally Displaced Persons camps from where many of them have been smoked out and arrested.
“Therefore, people living in relatively peaceful places within and near the North-East region and, in fact, all Nigerians are urged to be vigilant and report strange faces and movements promptly to the security authorities.”
Omeri alerted Nigerians on the alleged circulation of some spurious documents especially on the social media with the intent to cause disaffection among the citizenry.http://www.punchng.com/news/march-in-solidarity-for-soldiers-fg-urges/
Politics › Inec’s Card Reader: The Game Changer by resty4(op): 7:26am On Feb 18, 2015
The card reader is the latest innovation into Nigeria’s electoral process and was introduced to minimise rigging of the voters register.
The card reader, is an input device that reads the data in a medium or card, in this case, the Permanent Voter Card, PVC to the purpose of verifying if the data in the card corresponds with the data captured by INEC during the registration exercise of eligible voters.
The introduction of the card reader has sparked controversy with the two major parties, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC taking opposite positions on the issue. The PDP is demanding that the card reader be discarded with some of its officials alleging that it is unworkable.
The APC on the other hand, is demanding for the strict use of the device on the premise that it is the best antidote to the rigging of the voters roll.
How INEC’s reader works
•Card reader
After inputting the PVC into the card reader, if it is genuine, the picture of the owner would pop up to affirm that the card is genuine.
The next step is to confirm if the presenter of the card is the owner of the card. He or she is now expected to match his fingers on the card reader to show if the finger print would match the original biometric data captured during the registration exercise. If it matches, then the person is passed on to vote.
“If the finger print of the person agrees with the finger print on the imbedded chip and it will say ‘Verified’ and that means the person is free to go and vote.
If it does not belong to the person, the response would be ‘Not Verified’ and it says it loud for everybody to hear. If it says that, party agents are there, observers are there, voters are there and an INEC staff says go and vote or not and everybody keeps quiet,” Mr. Kayode Idowu, chief press secretary to the INEC chairman told Vanguard.
Mr. Idowu affirmed that the adoption of the card reader has significantly minimised rigging of the electoral roll.
According to him it would take conspiracy of all human elements at the polling unit to enable a wrong person to vote as the card reader would audibly pronounce the eligibility or otherwise of a potential voter.
“The way INEC has designed the Card Reader, it will only take a community conspiracy for the system to be manipulated and if that happens there is nothing anybody can do about it and it will not be the fault of INEC because it is designed in such a way that it is unique. Number one it has a voice prompt which will speak out loudly from the speaker if a voter is accredited or not the moment the finger print is placed on it.”http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/inecs-card-reader-the-game-changer/

Politics › (UPDATED) Troops Storm Monguno, Repel Gombebarracks Invasion by resty4(op): 4:55pm On Feb 14, 2015
Heavy fighting broke out on Saturday in Monguno, Borno State, which has been under Boko Haram control since August last year, in the bid of the military to flush out the militants in the town.
In a related development, the terrorists have attacked a military base in Gombe, in a renewed offensive to capture the Gombe State capital.
Military sources said the fighting is ongoing simultaneously on both fronts.
“The fighting is going on at the same time; federal troops have advanced on Monguno, to flush out the insurgents but the terrorists have attacked a military base in Gombe. We are dealing with the situations,” a source said.
One of our correspondents reports that in Gombe, the insurgents launched an early morning attack on Hina and Dadin Kowa in Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area of the state but were repelled by the military.
They subsequently attacked the nearby Zambuk, but were again repelled.
At the time of filing this report, a fierce battle is ongoing between the terrorists and men of the Nigerian Army at the 301 Artillery Regiment, Gombe, according to a resident, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone on condition of anonymity.
He said, “Residents of the town are trembling as they remain indoors, praying hard for divine intervention in the matter.”
He added that gunshots were heard all over the town as security agents were working hard to restore normalcy.
Latest report from Gombe indicated that troops had successfully repelled the invaders from the town.
A soldier said the insurgents gained entered the barracks through a bush path around 5.30am.
They were said to have set ablaze the Quarter Guard before the federal troops overpowered them with the attendant casualties on the said of the rebels, and flushed them out by 12noon.
Meanwhile, Air Force helicopters are said to have pounded and successfully dislodged the Boko Haram fighters from Monguno.

Politics › Elections: Jonathan Uses Kinsmen To Lobby Sultan by resty4(op): 7:09am On Feb 10, 2015
In his eleventh-hour strategy, President Goodluck Jonathan has resolved to use his kinsmen to appeal to the conscience of influential Nigerians, especially those of northern extraction, to reconsider him for re-election, a reliable source has disclosed.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, listed some of his strategies to include a proxy visit to the Sultan, emirs, most of the first-class chiefs and religious leaders, including Imams and pastors from the north.
LEADERSHIPreliably gathered yesterday that a respected monarch and a kinsman of the president, alongside Sokoto State deputy governor, Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, secretly visited the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubkar III, in his palace.
Jonathan’s kinsman, who arrived Sokoto with a presidential jet, headed straight for the Sultan’s palace where they held a closed-door meeting.
Details of the meeting could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report. However, a source within the palace said it was not be unconnected with the president’s re-election bid.
Deputy Governor Shagari is the coordinator of Jonathan’s campaign in the state.
Efforts to get further details from security officials at the airport did not yield positive results at the time of filing this report. Some of them claimed ignorance of the visit.
Efforts to get Sultan’s response were equally futile as those who should ordinarily be in the know denied being aware of such visit.http://leadership.ng/news/411233/general-elections-jonathan-kinsmen-lobby-sultan

Politics › Boko Haram: Outcome Of Nigeria-chad Defence Meeting by resty4(op): 7:11pm On Feb 06, 2015
A total of 7,500 soldiers have been involved in the joint operations between federal troops and the Chadian forces to fight Boko Haram insurgency.
It was made known February 6 by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, after the Abuja meeting between Nigeria’s defence leaders and the Chief of Defence Staff of Chad, Maj. Gen. Brahim Mahammat.
Badeh added that he and Mahammat had signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding counter-terrorism battle, refusing however to disclose the details of the document.
“I want you to know that Chadian Forces in Nigerian territory are mostly in the border town of Fotokol and Gamboru Ngala on the basis of the bilateral agreement we signed with them.
“We have been working together since. They came here now to clear some grey areas; that is what we have done. We have just met as an addendum to the MoU that we signed on the January 18…
“But I know that Chad is bringing a force of about 2,000 to 2,500. Nigeria is taking all her forces; but specifically to work with the Chadian Forces, we have 5,000 to work with them and that is what we have therehttp://www.naij.com/380688-boko-haram-outcome-of-nigeria-chad-defence-meeting.html

Politics › Boko Haram Plans Attack On Polling Centres by resty4(op): 7:25pm On Feb 05, 2015
The Federal Government on Thursday has raised alarm over plans by the Islamic terrorist group Boko Haram to attack polling units during the 2015 general elections.
According to The Nation, the group has perfected plans to collect, buy or steal the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) of female voters, give them to female suicide bombers to pave way for them to carry out their deadly activities during the elections.
Mr. Mike Omeri, the Coordinator of the National Information Centre, stated this while briefing journalists alongside security officers at the centre in Abuja.
He urged Nigerians, especially female voters to be mindful of their PVCs to ensure that they don’t get into the hands of bad elements.
“By this information, therefore, Nigerians, especially female voters, are warned to remain vigilant and also jealously guard and preserve their PVCs to avoid the possibility of their being lost to these bad elements who will put them to untoward uses,”he said.
Speaking on the 7,500 African Union-backed multinational force, Omeri said the force is composed of troops from countries in the Lake Chad Basin Commission areas.
However President Goodluck Jonathan has recently unveiled three National security documents for the different security problemsfacing the country, especially the Boko Haram insurgency.http://www.naij.com/380039-breaking-boko-haram-plans-attack-polling-centres.html
Politics › Top-ranking Boko Haram Commander Killed by resty4(op): 4:04pm On Feb 05, 2015
A top-ranking Boko Haram commander has been reported killed as Nigerian troops in conjunction with allied forces from neighbouring countries gain the upper hand in the war against terrorists in the country’s North-East and across the borders.
Sources at the frontline reported that the Boko Haram chieftain was a casualty of the on-going heavy air bombardment from warplanes while clearing the way for the ground troops of multinational task force to move into some towns near one of the boarders.
A couple of weeks ago the military high command had obtained approval of political authorities in Abuja to go all out and clear the region of insurgency before the February general elections.
At a period when massive operations were to start, however, the terrorists carried out simultaneous desperate and diversionary attacks on Maiduguri, Konduga and Monguno to both delay the commencement of planned military offensive and allow for the escape of their commanders holed up around the axis.
Despite this, however, the operations commenced and have been fierce with the cooperation of Chad, Niger and Cameroon, who are all Nigeria’s neighbours, leading to the capture of many towns and villages previously infested by the terrorists.
Some of the towns include Gamboru-Ngala, Malamfatori, Abadam, Kirawa and Ashigashiya and Michika while the liberation of Gwoza, Gulak and others may be announced any moment from now.
During these battles, some of the weapons captured from troops when the terrorists overran Baga, headquarters of the International Joint Task Force some weeks ago, were recovered by Nigerian fighters.
It would be recalled that a leader of Boko Haram had in a video released shortly after the Baga attack boasted that his band captured world-class sophisticated weaponry from Nigerian troops who he referred to as cowards.
Among the recovered weapons is a Battle Armoured Tank equipped with comprehensive protective system, maximum firing distance and accuracy with anti-aircraft rotating mount. Its fire accuracy is attained by range-finder, ballistic computer with a thermal barrel sleeve.
Several other weapons, arms and ammunition, including variety of armoured vehicles and artillery guns as well as several Hilux vehicles, were also captured from them.
A reliable security source confirmed the death of the top-ranking leader during the air raid, but which authenticity was still being investigated by military authorities. The killed terrorist leader is said to have been one of the senior officers in Boko Haram command to late founder of the group, Muhammed Yusuf.
When contacted, Defence Spokesperson, Major General Chris Olukolade, declined to comment on the authenticity or otherwise of the report, saying: “As far as we are concerned, anybody that is associated with terrorism is a target and right now. We have a task of cleaning up the entire Boko Haram infested region and returning peace to the country.”
One of the leaders of Boko Haram whose death has been controversial is Shekau. On August 19, 2013, the Joint Task Force (JTF) had announced the death of Shekau. They claimed he died of gunshots wounds received in an encounter with the JTF in one of their camps in Sambisa Forest on June 30, 2013. He was said to be mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide – a border community in Cameroon for treatment from which he never recovered.
Many months later, another character appeared in a video claiming to be Shekau but having different mannerisms, gait and character from the original Shekau.
Incidentally, the reign of this Shekau, termed Abubakar Shekau 11 by security sources, was short-lived as he was reportedly killed in a shootout with Nigerian troops in Konduga on Wednesday September 17, 2014.
Although video and still shots of the encounter were provided by military and independent sources, another character yet appeared in another video shortly afterwards, claiming to still be Abubakar Shekau. Military and security sources referred to him as Abubakar Shekau 111.
