Politics › Rochas Okorocha Urges Igbos To Remain In The North by resty4(op): 3:38pm On Feb 03, 2015
Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, has advised Igbos living in the Northern part of the country not to leave their place of residence because of the February 14 and 28 general elections.
The governor gave the advice on Monday in Abuja after a meeting of the APC chieftains Sunday night, Daily Trust reports.
Okorocha assured the Igbo people that fear of post-election violence is unfounded, adding that they should ignore the pronouncements of people like Asari Dokubo and other militants who are threatening war if President Goodluck Jonathan should lose his re-election bid.
He said they should remain in their various places of abode during the elections, saying that such movement will only be necessary if they were going home to cast their votes in the elections, reiterating that the poll would be peaceful, free and fair.http://www.naij.com/378250-rochas-okorocha-urges-igbos-to-remain-in-the-north.html

Politics › Finally, Nigerian Troops Bombard Sambisa Forest by resty4(op): 6:42am On Feb 03, 2015
As part of measures to contain and quell the Boko Haram insurgency, the military has stormed the insurgents in Sambisa Forest, their notorious hideout, according to reports from the Hausa service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
The director of defence information, Maj-Gen Chris Olukolade, told the agency that the military had been raiding the forest and other hideouts of the sect since Tuesday night.
According to the agency, the army used it war drones to level some of the Boko Haram camps in the northeast but it was not clear about the casualties on both sides. The army said that they are still committed to securing the civilian population at whatever cost.
“We are still committed in ensuring that we degrade their ability to continue their activities and eventually eliminate them,” Olukolade said.
“The mission is on. There are no allowing terrorists anywhere. As many times as they come, it will only give us the opportunity to decimate them.”
On Saturday, Chadian forces reclaimed the northeastern Nigerian town of Gamboru-Ngala after a heated battle with Boko Haram that involved a ground and air campaign. Gamboru-Ngala, about 145 kilometres east of Maiduguri, was captured by Boko Haram last year.
A soldier involved in the operation said Chadian forces were working under the African Union agreement to help Nigeria in its fight against Boko Haram.
Information made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday indicate that troops of the Nigerian Army under directive to invade Sambisa forest in Borno State with a view to end the years of Boko Haram insurgency, have started bombarding the fringes of the forest near Adamawa state.
Sources close to the area have confirmed that aerial bombardment had commenced yesterday.
A soldier serving with the 7 Division, Nigeria Army, Maiduguri confirmed this development to Leadership even as he begged not to be quoted in this report.
According to him, “special forces have been mobilised from different part of the country, especially the 81 battalion, to Yola over the weekend and the operation starts today (Monday).
“What people may have heard or seen today may not be unconnected with the operation. They have to do the bombardment of the forest starting from the fringes before the artillery troops would begin to advance. But be rest assured that before the end of this week the forest as well as many communities under the control of Boko Haram would be reclaimed”.
The soldier said himself and most of his colleagues were happy with the resolution of the United Nations for agreeing to constitute an international joint task force to deal with the Boko Haram.
Explosion rocks Gombe after Jonathan’s rally
Barely 20 minutes after President Goodluck Jonathan concluded his campaign in Gombe State, a car bomb exploded in the state capital, killing at least three people and injuring 18 others, according to a report by the BBC.
Eye witnesses said the attack executed by a female suicide bomber immediately killed women, including the bomber.
A resident, Mohammed Bolari, said that the explosion occurred some minutes after President Jonathan’s departure.
“The president had just passed the parking lot and we were trailing behind his convoy when the explosion happened,” Bolari said.
LEADERSHIP recalls that the state was similarly hit by two blasts on Sunday that killed no fewer than five people.
Another resident told AFP that the latest blast led to unrest in Gombe with angry youths attacking supporters of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the president’s party.
“They were shouting and denouncing the president’s visit which they blamed for the attack,” he added.
FG lauds AU over deployment of 7,500 troops
The federal government said yesterday that the African Union Peace and Security Council had approved the mobilization and immediate deployment of 7,500 to Nigeria to fight insurgency in the north East.
Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, stated this while briefing journalists at the centre in Abuja.
He said, “The African Union Peace and Security Council, at the recently concluded 24th ordinary session, approved the mobilization and deployment of 7,500 troops to Nigeria to fight Boko Haram.
“Consequently, the AU peace and Security Council is billed to begin to meet in Cameroon on Monday to authorize and finalize the concept of the operation in the fight against Boko Haram, a decision which has been welcomed by the UN secretary-general Mr. Ban Ki Moon.”
Speaking on the recent breakthrough recorded by the Nigerian army against insurgents, Omeri said the soldiers’ gallantry and the recovery of three armoured personnel carriers (APCs) and 17 pick-up trucks from the terrorists helped the troops to inflict heavy casualties on them, and recapture of the towns of Mafa, Gamboru-Ngala, Malumfatori, Abadam and Marte, while troops are advancing to retake other affected areas.
“The situation in Adamawa State shows that Hong, Mubi North, Mubi South, Maiha, Michika, Shuwa, Wuro Gyambi, Gombi, Vimtim, Uba and Bazza areas have been liberated from Boko Haram presence, while Madagali, Gulak, Wagga-Mildo, Shelini/Vapra, Sabon-gari and Gubla are still under Boko Haram presence.
“Other areas such as Kirchinga, Pallam and Mayo-wandu have remained calm and peaceful. Equally, government troops in Yobe State have recaptured parts of Gujba and Gulani which had witnessed Boko Haram presence,” he said
Omeri noted that the latest attacks on Maiduguri marked the second time the insurgents were launching a ferocious attack on the Borno State capital within one week, saying the Nigerian military’s gallantry in resisting these attacks has resulted in the recapture and liberation of several towns hitherto occupied by the sect.
He expressed government’s approbation of the determination and loyalty of the troops and local folks who ably defended their territory in spite of the violence unleashed by the insurgents.
He urged citizens living within and around the affected areas to be more vigilant and continue to assist troops and other security operatives in their efforts to contain the insurgency.
Boko Haram suffers more casualties in fresh shootout with soldiers
Boko Haram terrorists on Sunday night suffered heavy casualties after hours of shootout with soldiers in Konduga town, 35 kilometres away from Maiduguri, security sources and witnesses said.
Residents in Konduga said the terrorists had plotted to seize Konduga, a town they had repeatedly tried and failed to take in the past months.
The gunmen had attempted to invade Konduga through a neighbouring village called Tungushe, but met a firewall of resistance from Nigerian soldiers stationed there.
A resident of Konduga, Abuwar Ibrahim, who said he witnessed the incident, told LEADERSHIP: “The soldiers were courageous and very professional in the defence of Konduga and its environs.
”The insurgents came at about 5pm on Sunday and engaged the military in a gun battle. They were throwing explosives and Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) but they were not successful as usual because the soldiers stood their ground and ensured that about 100 of the insurgents were killed.
“Their corpses littered the streets and the surrounding bushes of the village. I saw many of them. The military seriously dealt with them; they actually did good job. If the soldiers maintain these tempo, I believe, very soon, the Boko Haram insurgency will end as they (the terrorists) were all defeated in all the recent attacks.
A top military officer who does not want his name mentioned in this report confirmed the Konduga battle.
“The Boko Haram terrorists attempted to take Konduga again yesterday but they failed as usual; our men seriously dealt with them there, and going by the reports we got from our field commanders, over 100 of them were killed.”https://www.nairaland.com/newtopic?board=20

National security spokesman Mike Omeri said:
“Our troops are in control after operations which had the active support of volunteers (vigilantes) and our friendly neighbours.”
According to Omeri, the other 4 towns reclaimed are Mafa, Mallam Fatori, Abadam, Marte, which information he disclosed in a separate statement.
It was provided by a correspondent in Fotokol, a Cameroonian town located close to Gamboru, the aerial bombardment of the area was ongoing earlier today, but it got calm by the evening.
It should be recalled that this weekend Boko Haram made another attempt to capture Borno State capital, Maiduguri. The attack was however repelled by the soldiers. It came a week after the insurgents had seized Monguno town, situated near Maiduguri.http://www.naij.com/377745-army-recaptures-five-towns-from-boko-haram.html

Politics › ‘interesting Signs Suggest Chibok Girls Still Alive, Well’ by resty4(op): 4:12pm On Feb 01, 2015
As parents of the abducted Chibok girls continue to despair over the chances of re-uniting with their abducted daughters nine months after Boko Haram terrorists took them to captivity, recent signs have indicated that the girls may still be well and alive.
LEADERSHIP Sunday has gathered from sources around Chibok community that the terrorists had married most of the girls and are keeping them in good condition of living.
When the group seized towns around Gwoza, Minchika and Mubi, it was believed that the insurgents moved into those communities with the girls who are now serving as wives for the terrorists.
According to a respected medical personnel who works in the area; an old Chibok woman had accidentally ran into one of the girls when Boko Haram were in control of the Chibok neighbourhood. Her interaction with the girl was perceived as though the girl was trying to secretly pass a message to her parents through the woman.
“When Boko Haram came to sack our communities some months back, they came with the intention of staying in the towns and villages for a long time. So, some of the terrorists moved in with their wives. An aged woman was said to have accosted one of the girls unknowingly.
The girl, on noticing that the old woman was from Chibok, decided to strike a conversation in Kibaku (Chibok’s language). The old woman was shocked to hear a girl from amongst the terrorists speaking Kibaku. When the woman decided to ask her further about her identity, the girl mentioned the name of her mother and then brought out some used shells of cartridges from her bag and handed them over to the old woman saying, ‘you can have this, we use them to make ear rings in the place we came from’, said the source.
“We believed that story because the old woman in question though did not actually know the mother of the girl. When we later crossed check the girls name on the school register, it surprisingly corresponded with the one the old woman gave. It was later we sensed that the girl was trying to pass across a coded message by revealing her name and handing out a souvenir to tell a story about where she was being kept”.
Another incident that gave more hopes that the Chibok girls may still be alive was when Boko Haram terrorists attacked a community near Mubi and were trying to force some of the girls to go away with them and probably marry one of them.
“When one of the girls said she would not marry them; a Boko Haram member angrilyy told her saying, ‘Are you better than all the Chibok girls that got married to us willingly?’
“That statement alone indicated that these Chibok girls are still alive and well”, said the source.
LEADERSHIP Sunday was begged by the source not to mention the girl’s name in order not to jeopardise her safety.http://leadership.ng/news/408139/interesting-signs-suggest-chibok-girls-alive-well
Politics › Calm Returns To Maiduguri As Soldiers, Civilian-JTF Foil Boko Haram Attack by resty4(op): 3:57pm On Feb 01, 2015
Calm has returned to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, after hours of shelling, bombardments and shooting between soldiers and Boko Haram insurgents.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that through the combined force of soldiers and operatives of the local vigilante, called Civilian-JTF, hundreds of Boko Haram members were killed and a cache of ammunitions recovered.

Though the operatives of Civilian-JTF said they were still counting and recovering corpses, PREMIUM TIMES gathered that apart from those that died on the frontline, many civilians were reportedly killed by stray bullets and Air Force jet bombings.

In a suburb known as Abujantalakawa along Maiduguri – Biu highway, an old man and his daughter were reportedly hit and killed by an RPG shot by the terrorists.

About 7 persons were killed in a house near Moduganari Street where the Air Force jet fighting the Boko Haram terrorists dropped a bomb.

Many other persons were said to have been injured when another bomb was fired by the military jet near Giwa barracks.

Speaking on the attack, a top security officer in Maiduguri said “though the (Boko Haram) boys were daring, our troops and the Civilian-JTF put up a stiff resistance and left the hoodlums with a bitter experience today. Over 500 of the laid wasted out there. We have recovered several weapons and arms which they abandoned while fleeing”.

Already, residents of the Borno capital have begun to come out of their homes after staying indoors while the attack occurred.

Sunday’s attack is the second by the insurgents in one week as they continue their plot to take the Borno capital. The military had last Sunday foiled a similar plan by the group, who also attacked Konduga and Monguno.

Crime › Grim Tales Of Rape, Child Trafficking In Nigeria’s Displaced Persons Camps by resty4(op): 9:17pm On Jan 31, 2015
On a bed at the female ward of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital laid a 15-year-old girl in an evidently bad state. Her face and head were bandaged, leaving slits through which only a bruised eye and swollen lips were visible. On her body were clearer signs of trauma, with burns running from her neck down to the lower parts of her body.

Around her bed wafted a foul smell, which a nurse who came to attend to her attributed to a septic wound in the girl’s skull.
A nurse who does not want to be named, because she is not authorised to speak to the on the matter, told the icirnigeria.org, that a group of people from the biggest Internally Displaced Persons, IDP, camp in Maiduguri dumped Lami (the surnames of all victims in this report are withheld to protect them) at the hospital.

“We have many of them. They’d been either raped in the camp or sold by those that should be protecting them in the camps,” the nurse said.
Approached by the reporter, Lami tried to speak, but her voice was muffled into a whisper as pains coursed through her body.

She said her parents were killed by Boko Haram insurgents in her village and she managed to reach Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, in an open truck that dropped people off at a camp for displaced persons.
In the course of moving from one camp to the other, she was separated from her younger brother.

“I do not know where he is,” she said through muffled sobs.

How did she end up in the hospital burnt and battered?

Lami said some government officials came to the camp and took many young girls away and later sold them as slaves. She ended up in the house of one Alhaji Aliyu, whose brother and wife abused her. While Aliyu’s brother repeatedly raped her, his wife weighed in with physical abuse.

“One day, some people came to the camp and said that they were taking us to a better place. That was how I got to Alhaji Aliyu’s house and it was there, every day, his brother forcefully slept with me.

“After that, he would beat me and one of Alhaji’s wives too would always beat me. One day she attacked me with a knife. That was how I got the wound in my skull,” she recounted.

Lami’s case, depressingly, is not an isolated one. Hundreds of girls are now being trafficked from some of the IDP camps in the Northeast set up to cater for people displaced by the insurgency, especially unregistered ones.

It was learnt that because many of the camps cannot accommodate all the people displaced from their homes by Boko Haram attacks, many IDPs end up in makeshift unofficial camps close to the officially designated ones or in nearby villages.
The people in the makeshift camps are not officially registered and technically are not under the care of government.
They are usually taken care of by villagers or even relatives in the government-run camps. Somehow, state officials have the same access and control over these unofficial camps.

They ran from their village in Adamawa and are in small unregistered camp in Gombe
A fertile ground for child trafficking
Kingsley Ogar, a staff of an international donor agency, who does not want his organisation named, confirmed that child trafficking is rife in the IDP camps.

“We had a case in Gombe where a group of persons came from the South, Lagos or Ibadan, we can’t be so sure, paid some people and took away children from the camp.

“We went to deliver relief items in this particular IDP Camp and took a census so that we could come back the following day, which we did, only to realize that over a dozen of them were missing. They were mostly young children between the ages of 5 and 15. “Upon investigation we discovered that some “lords” in the camp were in partnership with the Lagos people to sell the kids.
“We reported to the police (Gombe State command), but we do not know whether they have done anything,” he said.
Our reporter learnt of an IDP camp in Yola where there were said to be about 900 children without parents. It was alleged that children were being sold and trafficked in the camp.

Our reporter visited the camp posing as an official of a church that takes care of children and made startling discoveries. An official in the camp named Raila, who wore the reflective vest of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, told the reporter to wait while she went into a makeshift office. There, she spoke with a male colleague, whom she said is an official of NEMA.

She returned to announce: “You will pay N50,000.for each child and you can only go with three if you want them today,” as if she was in a livestock market.

Apparently not totally devoid of conscience, she tried to rationalise her illicit trade. “We use the money to take care of the other children still here,” she said.

Without any attempt at verifying the reporter’s identity and in less than 30 minutes, three children were ready to be sold, possibly never to return to their roots.
Further investigations revealed that such child trafficking business is a thriving and well-run racket in most IDP camps in the insurgency ravaged North east. It is a triangular manifestation of evil that comprises some heartless displaced persons, unscrupulous camp officials and child traffickers.

Displaced persons who know the children without parents act as middlemen between the buyer and the seller. They liaise with people who come from places as far flung as Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Abuja, Katsina, to carry out the first step in the trafficking process.
The displaced person also identifies the children to be sold and goes ahead to negotiate a price, which, it was gathered, could range from as little as N10,000 to as much as N100,000. After negotiations, the middleman approaches the camp official in charge. The official collects the money and approves the release of the kids.

The child trafficker, we gathered, then re-sells the children to an interested family as a domestic servant or slave.
Like Lami, many, if not all of these children, have very little education. They have little knowledge of their rights and no clue as to how to return home. Those they entrusted their lives with at the IDP camps liaise with the traffickers and agents exploiting their vulnerability in this hideous transaction.

Politics › Drone Allegedly Crashes Near Maiduguri by resty4(op): 12:03pm On Jan 27, 2015
An unmanned drone has supposedly crashed at Dumge village of Mafa Local Government Area of Borno State, KSM News, Borno state government media aide’s Facebook account, has reported.
The drone was apparently being used in the counter-terrorism operation in the Northeast.
According to KSM news, a witness, Muktar Usman, said of the drone on the social media as follows: “It could be French. And what happened after that? The drone is still armed. I can see missiles attached to the wings. Locals have to be careful!”The Nigerian Defence Headquarters is yet to confirm the information concerning the drone.
Nigeria is not known for using drones in the war against Boko Haram insurgents.
Dumge village is 30km northeast of Maiduguri, capital of Borno state, the state worst-hit by terrorists.
It should be noted that last Saturday, January 24, Nigerian troops and Boko Haram insurgentswere involved in a ferocious fight for the city of Maiduguri.http://www.naij.com/373095-drone-allegedly-crashes-near-maiduguri.html

Politics › Nigerian Military Set For “final Onslaught” Against Boko Haram by resty4(op): 6:47pm On Jan 23, 2015
The Nigerian military is set for a final, and comprehensive onslaught against the extremist Boko Haram group, in an operation expected to end by before February election, a website that distributes press statements for the Nigerian military, has reported.
PRNigeria quoted a military source as saying that government forces have finalized plans to conduct a “once and for all comprehensive operations” towards the elimination of Boko Haram terrorists in parts of North East.
The news came a day after President Goodluck Jonathan’s National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, said the fighting has been undermined by “cowardly soldiers” who prefer giving every excuse in the world to fighting the extremists.
PRNigeria said the new military plan came as the Jonathan administration became so worried by the activities of Boko Haram, especially after viewing the latest video from the terror group, in which its leader, Abubakar Shekau, claimed they have enough weapons to overrun Nigeria and its neighbours.
The report said the military plan has been approved by the federal government, and has also received the assurance of cooperation and support of Cameroun, Niger and Chad, who now appear to have realised the danger posed by continuing to allow terrorists free movement across the borders.
“Nigerian military is reviewing strategy in the combat against terrorists to accommodate joint and combined operations with neighbouring military organisations,” the source was quoted as saying.
Massive deployment of air and amphibious assets are expected to feature in the operation.
Preparatory to the mission, the Defence Headquarters has changed the General Officer Commanding the 7 Division which is the leading formation in the counter-terrorism campaign, the source was quoted as saying.
The source said the deployment for the mission will facilitate the elimination of safe haven and escape routes of Boko Haram terrorists within Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
PRNigeria also reported that innocent citizens living in terrorist-infested areas are expected to vacate temporarily to safer towns.
Speaking to PRNigeria, Defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade declined comment on details of the operation, he however, said the military would not relent in its efforts to restore peace to every part of the country.
He also admitted that all the countries bordering Nigeria are willing to compliment the efforts in Nigeria as terrorism has remained a menace or threat to all in the region.http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/175472-nigerian-military-set-final-onslaught-boko-haram-source.html
