Yeah,it doesn't sell as much (in price)as hybrids(Hausa tomatoes) but the it does affect the price of the hybrid tomatoes ...at the market, the market women buying to resell often opt to buy the local oblong tomato cus it's cheaper.when a crate of hybrid is selling for 15k that of the local can sell for as less as 3-5k,most times thier customers don't care.tomato is tomato to them..
True. I'm hoping for the best.

Okay. Thanks.
What's mostly available here is the local tomatoes that has oblong fruit shape? Doesn't sell as much as the hybrid.

You nailed it sir. Open field on large acreage in our tropical low land will require so much of experience/expertise that is gained over time. A 100 million investment can go down the drain scaling up without requisite expertise. I started with few stands years back on a plot but had ever since moved to different sites as i expand to hectare. If i had started large with millions and no much experience it would've been disastrous.
Nothing beats starting small and upscaling after gathering enough experience.

What I am saying is that there many farms that are not more than 5years and they own like 2 hilux few farm trucks….. why is it that we have trend of 3 years on nairaland and all I could see is 2plot of tomatoes on the same trend since 3years…. Is it that it not profitable or when them scale up they stop coming to nairaland? In fact my father gave some some land to cultivate tomatoes last year… they have expanded this year to a bigger space if I give those women 3years they will cultivate up 10acares soon… why is there no development in a trend of over 5yrs it still same 3plot of tomatoes or cucumbers or pepper
RISK MANAGEMENT.
A lot of us have other enterprises. Aside tomatoes, some of us here cultivate pepper, watermelon, yam, cucumber etc. I have 1 acre of pepper in addition to my 2 acres of tomatoes of different ages but we don't need to start showing off all our enterprises. Besides, do you think the local seed farmers expend all the resources (staking, time and agro chemicals) we expend on our hybrid tomatoes?
Imagine what is currently happening to the sole cropping tomato farmers up North that are currently ravaged by Tuta absoluta (tomato Ebola). This is the reason many diversify into other enterprises to spread our risks and we don't jump out to declare all our enterprises. A 2plots tomatoes farmer may have 10 acres of cassava elsewhere.

I am really confused about nairaland is it only people that have few hundred thousand that are here because I no understand ooo… I know few farms that cultivate different crops on like 30 to 50 acres and they started with 20 And they’re successful now… they own personal cars. The only thing I see on nairaland is 2plot success of tomatoes or cucumber, 2acres failure of tomatoes…. Nah only 2-3plot una Dey get success for here? Must I start from 2 plots? What if I have like 10 - 20 million to start a agribusiness where I am gonna have agronomists- marketers-contracted laborers-security…. I go con carry 20million for hand con go Dey cultivate 2plots? I have never see a successful 5 acres of tomatoes farm here but I know some and have even see some on Facebook… nah only newbies Dey here? Abi nah fund issue?
Last year I got 10 acres for cultivation and planned getting more for successive planting. I wasted funds in clearing, land preparation, transplanting and was only able to cultivate 2 acres successfully because workers dealt with me. I learnt my lessons and decided to downsize to 3 acres this year.
You will always meet online farmers that exaggerate things just to lure newbies for consultancy.

Bros my mouth don dey pain me because of too much talk talk.
Money belongs to you;

Heart belongs to you.

Go ahead with your plans. If the project becomes successful, good for you but if things go bad, you'll face the headache and heartache alone. Just because we are straightforward with our experiences and results doesn't mean we are paupers.

3acres intermittently is still too big in my opinion. Spread your market risks by diversifying into other high hectare value crops (cucumbers, watermelon etc.); target your production to coincide with market scarcity of your selected enterprises; and employ the services of seasoned experts or consultants for proper guidance and management so you don't end up wasting your capital.

This is just what I'll do if I'm in your shoes.

Hello guys if a set my farm in a way that I have 3 acres for sell every months is there market for it… like will I be able to sell them easily?
1. Do you have the experience and tenacity to run 3 acres effectively?
2. It will be too risky to set up 3 acres in batches. Losses will be higher if production or the market messes up. Not even Mile 12 market will bail you out.

I'll suggest you start small, learn the ropes, and upscale gradually. There's a reason most of us here are operating an acre or less at a time. It doesn't mean we are not interested in the revenue, overwhelming ourselves with too much is just not worth it.

I start selling today officially smiley, and I sold for those that want to resell at the same spot at 17k per crate. Normally it should be 18k...let me put it this way.. any farmer that transplant between (open field) feb-march, and you notice your tomato don't do well like previous years or perhaps you are newbie, it is general including myself, the weather cause it and there is nothing we can do about it. Farmers has being complaining to me, one even said" he suspect one woman behind the ordeal grin grin grin"
grin grin grin
The weather for this year don show me shege pro max. My pepper is supposed to be fruiting heavily currently but the bad weather has delayed it. I pray for quick recovery so that I can start harvesting pepper when tomato harvest starts.

You can step it down to 1" halfway.

The distance between them is 600m and the source of water is borehole
If the source of water have storage tank(s), get a 2" mud pump, 2" suction hose", 2" outlet hose and a storage tank for your site.
Connect the mud pump to the storage tank at the source of water using the suction hose, the outlet hose to the mud pump and run the hose straight to your storage tank.

local in what context? as in those watery small non-hybrid variety or grown in naija? if you refer to those watery breed, then 12k is pretty good for a crate.

@reuben010, the purported import from neighbouring countries that hit the FP few days ago coupled with the little availability of local breed in the markets, this is gradually crashing the price. i sold 14.5k on sat.
Thanks.

1. Price is fluctuating here, a crate of local tomato is 12000 as at Friday last week, I'm yet to ask for today's market price.

2. As per yield, my tomatoes are just ripening now, and fruiting well.

3. 1500 stand currently, though planting like 1k stands every week

Hmm maybe. A few stands from different part of the farm just droop their leaves and start dying off.
It mostly affected the smaller ones.

I mixed NPK and urea and applied at exactly 5cm I think to all.

But now that the plants are taller, l haven't seen any more new droops.

What do you think?
Urea is the culprit. I only apply urea through fertigation. My fear of urea no be small.

Wow! I appreciate your prompt attention! God bless you mightily!

1. The fertilizer is Npk 15.15.15 (granular).

2. The crops has no visible symptom of fungi or bacterial infection. Asking for the routine medications. I'm using the three fungicides and three insecticides shown by @Farmerakinloye in his YouTube channel. This is my first time of doing tomato farming.
You can apply all same day if your schedule permits. The fungicide and insecticide will be sprayed on the leaves while the NPK goes to the soil by top-dressing.

Please spray early morning or late evening to avoid leaf burns.

Thanks so much for sharing this insight. This is really helpful.

Please I want to ask, can fertilizer and fungicides be applied on tomatoes farm on the same day? I'm trying to follow the recommended fungicide and insecticide schedule, but had the need for fertilization. Can both be done the same day?
Is your fertilizer granular for top/side dressing or foliar based?
Are your crops under any form of fungal or bacterial attack?

Answers to these 2 questions above will help with suggestions.

In addition, there are also reports of outbreak of tuta absoluta (popularly called tomato ebola) in some parts of the North. This further cut down supply from the north, this really contributed to the current unsual hike in tom price.

BTW, what type of pepper variety did you grow and how well does it perform at the peak of rainy season.?
Seems this Tuta absoluta wants to be every 3years thing.

I cultivate scotch bonnet (rodo) pepper. Seed is a heirloom and was procured from a farmer 2years ago. Based on the performance last year, the pepper performs optimally when fertilized properly (heavy manuring and foliar fertilizer spray every 2weeks). On average, we harvested 10 bags (25kg feed sack) of pepper weekly on 4plots.

Pepper is a less stressful crop. Apart from dieback disease that was controlled, no much issues.

I prune when the plant start crawling by removing the suckers. I start from the second node to the 5-6th nodes. I allow the first node to grow into a vine so that each plant will have 2 vines. I dont allow any fruit or flower on the nodes I prune.. i dont normally prune leaves unless when fungal infection is much. Dont prune more than 2-3 leaves per plant in a week since it can have bad effect like curved fruits.

From the 7th node upward I allow the sucker to grow 2-3 nodes before I cut off the tip. With this method u must fertilize very well.
Please can you throw more light on your fertilization plan?

Based on observations overtime, market dynamics of tomatoes follow a regular pattern. Most tomato farmers (a major source of glut because of large land holdings and cheaper inputs) in the North practice irrigation-fed agriculture. They commence cultivation of tomatoes and some other vegetables during August. So their produce hits the market from December until April with few spilling into May.

On the other hand, local tomato farmers here in the South practice rain-fed and have to wait until April or May before commencing cultivation to avoid losses caused by vagaries in weather (as already seen this year).

The few enterprising and privileged farmers in the South take advantage of the short lag between when Northern tomatoes are leaving the market and when local tomato farmers in the South start producing and supplying markets. This lag is Between May and July (or August in some years). So in order to hit the goldmine at this scarcity period, you have to nurse your seeds by February, March or early April.

Congratulations!!! You just achieved that.

Just my opinion while we await opinions from others.

I just checked my farm record now, check it out and pls do the maths yourself for both nursery and transplanting, the transpl date will be more appropriate cos the nursery overstayed due to some issues beyond my control. Few pickings commenced on 15th, while Mayor harvesting on 20th May.
