omoniyisam: Yea but going into cucumber around that time without irrigation will lead into disaster for many o... I'm suspecting planting cucumber around September/Oct with good irrigation may yield good profit sha Those that cultivate late season OPV cucumber seeds in the South do that by September/early October because they allow them crawl on the ground unstaked. Crawling forms a live mulch that keeps the ground hydrated even with few rains. This kind of cultivation produce the bulk of cucumbers that comes down South from North around October and November. Although it requires a larger arable land area for cultivation when compared to staked cuke, its cost of production is cheaper hence giving the farmers the advantage of price leadership when market price for cucumber is down. Our advantages cultivating hybrid cukes are longer shelf life, freshness, appeal to the eyes and maximization of output over a smaller area of land. My cultivating cukes now is a risk I'm willing to take because it most likely will be more profitable than tomatoes between now and early November. All my cuke plots have drip irrigation setup even during raining season. No room for stories that touches the kidneys. The little profit generated from this will offset some farm expenses while we await cultivating heavily mid October. If you intend cultivating irrigation-fed cuke, I'll suggest mid-October to early November. |

Farmerakinloye6: [if you ask me which one I will choose at the moment, I say cucumber because attention is on tomato right now.] if you follow my advise then you will have being selling at pick now! If you are just planning to plant now I will advise you plant little. Given the mad rush by many farmers into tomatoes, I envisage cucumber's profitability will be better than tomato's August, September and October. Many farmers are currently tied down in tomatoes and will only be free to return to cucumber by the end of September to October. Some are even waiting to plant cucumber after August break that is still elusive. This year, high price of tomatoes may slightly alter the market dynamics of other crops because many farmers want to grab a bite of the tomato's premium price and is evident in the scarcity of premium tomato seeds. Sadly, late comers will be badly burnt. That's my rationale behind cultivating cukes now although, I still have some tomatoes on ground. I must milk tomato dry this year |

mcyemite: this year is actually going to be different kinda off ...the tomatoe calendar for this year is already ruined ,although it's not advisable to borrow money to fund tomato cultivation I however still believe tomato will still sell for very good price till end of the year...because the main supply line has be critically hit this year, before thing goes back to normality will be next year...
I saw a programme on nta 100s of tomato farmers are vowing to never cultivate Tomato again in the north until the government find a way to help them with tuta absoluta ,more than 5000000 hectares was lost to tuta absoluta this year...
So I will implore western farmer to keep cultivating The mad rush for tomato seeds currently is a signal that a glut may exist between October and December although not as bad as previous years. Rain-fed tomato farmers that were not able to cultivate earlier because of scanty rains are now planting in order to at least have a bite of the high price this year. All the rush for planting now will be due for harvest between October and December bringing about a glut. Like already advised, we need to thread with caution. In my opinion, scarcity of tomatoes may start again earlier next year because of many farmers abstinence due to high cost of fuel for irrigation dependent farmers and the fear of Tuta in the North. |

ideepaul: I saw you mentioned you cultivate peppers too, how has your journey been like compared to tomatoes and are you doing local or hybrid peppers? Unlike tomatoes, pepper is hardy and can better withstand unfavorable environmental conditions. Also, you don't expend much on attention, finance, agrochemicals, water and staking (not needed). I prefer the local pepper to hybrid because of resistance to diseases and adaptability to adverse climatic conditions. If you want to go local, be sure of the seed source so that you don't end up buying seeds of F2 or other generations of hybrid pepper. |

OluchiDelly: i grow both hybrid and heirloom, heirloom pepper tend to have better disease resistance than most hybrids reason being the sizes are smaller and have not been sacrificed at the alter of yield by the seed breeders. for pepper, i will always go for heirloom. Exactly. I cultivated the pepper rainfed while hybrid tomato is drip irrigated. If it was hybrid pepper I planted, they would have succumbed to the very hot weather we experienced weeks ago with opportunistic insects infestation and attack concomitantly. The local pepper gives room for bounce-back when management and climate improves while hybrid may not. |

mcyemite: I am planning to do my first cucumber seedling tomorrow and I am honestly feeling lazy ahead about the transplantating...and it really got me thinking if it's worth doing or I should plant it directly into the soil...I want to plant 3 sachet of greengo.
Pls senior men that have done both direct planting and using of seed trays...is it worth the stress? Transplanting of cukes is a bit more technical than that of tomatoes because cukes are younger and fragile when transplanted. Just like opined above, I'll suggest direct seeding and spraying of heavy concentrations of insecticide around the boundaries for the first 1week to ward off rodents and insects. You can also nurse some seeds in seedtrays concomitantly for gapping up to replace unsprouted hills. |
