Selfies, selfies and selfies. This is what some persons think Instagram is all about. No. There is more to this photo sharing website than just selfies. And as a budding entrepreneur, who is also social media savvy, you have to think outside the box to explore and maximally take advantage of this very influential social network for your small business. This is a cost-effective way to reach customers. Entrepreneurs have unhindered access to over 400 million active users, over 60% of users log in daily, making it the second most engaged network after Facebook; 30% of internet users are now on Instagram and 90% of Instagram users are younger than 35. If this doesn’t appeal to you, perhaps the marketing statistics will; 48.8% of brands are on Instagram and by 2017, it is expected to rise to 70.7%. In addition, engagement with brands on Instagram is 10 times higher than Facebook, 54 times higher than Pinterest and 84 times higher than twitter according to brandwatch.com. So, small enterprises don’t need to break the bank to market their businesses. In line with this, i will share some ideas on how Nigerian entrepreneurs can effectively and properly deploy Instagram for their small businesses. Connect Instagram to your other social media channels For persons who are familiar with Instagram, you can link your account with others like Twitter and Facebook. So anything you post on Instagram will simultaneously be shared on your other accounts. This will go a long way in helping you get more engagements and tractions. Don’t overlook videos You don’t need a video camera to shoot a video. You can simply use your phone to record the services that you provide. The interesting thing is that these videos are simple and short and it can easily maintain your follower’s attention span. Respond to comments When your followers comment on your postings, they always expect a response from you. In addition, follow your fans back and try as much as possible to interact with them regularly. Use Hashtags Hashtags (#) is the way to search for images on Instagram. So, you use as much as 30 hashtags. However, ensure that they are related to the image and what you are marketing. Reward your followers To maintain and sustain your presence and your followers on Instagram, it is important for you to reward them. You should do this intermittently. And it doesn’t really matter how small the reward is. Use flawless pictures Instagram is all about images. If these images are blur, sooner rather later, you will lose your followers. So, always post flawless images! |

Apple, famed for sophisticated phones, is at it again with the launch of the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus which are the mobile phones of the moment. As expected, it was launched by Apple with so much pomp and pageantry and fans are very excited and look forward to laying their hands on this gadget. Some of the key features of the phones are: Capacity- 32 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB, colour-Rose Gold, Gold, Silver, Black, Jet Black, Weight- 138 grams (iPhone 7) 188 grams (iPhone 7 plus), Display 4.7 (iPhone 7) 5.5 (iPhone 7 plus), water and dust resistant and 12 megapixel camera. In addition, both phones have nifty processors, improved cameras, and durable battery life. However, there are certain things or features that may discourage you from buying these iPhones. we identify some them. No radical design changes If you use the iPhone 6 series, you probably do not need to worry about upgrading to the new iPhones. Why? Because there are no huge differences in design. The only noticeable changes are that iPhone 7 and 7 plus have bottom stereo speakers and 2 back cameras (iPhone 7 plus). Beyond this, there are no major design changes. No Headphone jack Apple has gotten rid of the headphone jack. Now, you can only use wireless earphones with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Hence, you may be unable to use the earphones for other mobile devices. Nothing special about water and dust resistant Thankfully, iPhone is finally water resistant. It may not catch the fancy of Apple fans because water and dust resistant is already a key feature in the Samsung Galaxy S7 for over several models. It can easily shatter The iPhone glass screen is very fragile which means it can easily shatter when it drops. Meanwhile, other mobile phones are shatter proof even if iPhones are virus and hack proof. Cost The new iPhones cost $649 (approximately N270,000). And considering the economic recession, buying these phones may not be on your priority list. Unfortunately, installment payment options are not available in Nigeria. |

Lagos no doubt has a vibrant and active nightlife. There are all-night party hubs, hotels like the Ibis Ikeja, eateries and other places that have made it easier for night predators to indulge. However, for Lagos to truly achieve its metropolitan status, it must have a night economy that goes beyond simply partying. The fact is extending late night hours automatically extends any city’s economy and also provides much-needed jobs. Although Lagos is showing signs of becoming a 24-hour city in order to join other cities that never sleep like New York, Montevideo, Madrid, Beirut, Paris, Cairo, Marrakech, Mumbai, Las Vegas and Buenos Aires, there is so much to do especially in the area of creating a conducive business environment. So what are some of these signs that Lagos is showing to becoming a city that functions round-the-clock? wel shares some of them. You can find your way no matter the time you arrive In some Nigerian cities, you cannot move around indiscriminately especially in the night. Although carefree movement in the night is not advisable in Lagos, you can still find your way if you arrive in the night especially at busy Lagos hubs like Oshodi, Ojota, and Bergers amongst others. The markets are ‘always’ open People are always transacting businesses in major markets in the city. These markets never shut. So, depending on your location in the city, you can purchase anything you want even at the dead of the night. Night shopping is cheaper and less stressful. Safe and secure Today, in Lagos, the city is reasonably safe and secure compared to other cities of Nigeria. In almost every nook and cranny, you will find checkpoints. Even though the Nigerian police can be uncanny and intimidating sometimes, you can be assured of your safety if you go about your business legally. Safety and security are key to becoming a 24-hour-city. Infrastructure development Projects like the Eko Atlantic City, the Red and Blue Rail lines, Lekki Deep Sea Port, massive street lighting and the Public Mass Transit are some of the support infrastructures that Lagos needs to become a round-the-clock city. With these and more similar projects, Lagos will definitely compete with other 24-hour-cities in the nigh future. Lagos is Nigeria’s heartbeat Lagos is undoubtedly the heartbeat and economic nerve centre of Nigeria. It is a melting pot where you find all Nigerian tribes and everyone wants to come to the city because it has something to offer for everyone. Being economically viable will make it easier for the city to function 24-hours non-stop. |

As the price of oil continues to nosedive globally and the Nigerian economy is in recession, this has resulted to cutting in government expenditure and the loss of jobs. But an interesting thing that is happening in this recession is that sectors that have been ignored for years are being given attention by the Nigerian government. One of such industries is the Nigerian tech space. Technology in Nigeria has continued to grow since the turn of the decade. Today, there are hundreds of tech startups, tech ecosystem and incubation hubs making a significant contribution to the Nigerian economy. This is long before the crash of oil prices. The biggest recognition offered to the Nigerian tech space so far is the visit of Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook. This even makes it important to note that it is possible for technology to drive Nigeria out of the current economic recession.we shares 4 possible ways technology can drive Nigeria’s economy out of recession. Partnership with incubation hubs Incubation hubs are dotted all over Nigeria including Lagos. In fact, Yaba has been tagged as the country’s Silicon Valley because of the presence of many tech startups, incubation hubs and e-commerce businesses. Leading the incubation hub pack is Co-Creation hub (CC Hub). These incubation hubs are already working with startups and a public-private partnership with them will go a long way. Support tech startups The government is already doing this as it recently organized a technology Demo day where 30 selected startups showcased their businesses and ideas in Abuja. If more of these events are organized, it will provide much-needed funds for these startups. Tax breaks for e-commerce businesses Technology has a huge impact on the e-commerce industry. They employ thousands of Nigerians. While concerted efforts are being made to prevent job losses, e-commerce businesses are groaning due to the recession and lack of infrastructure. But, if these e-commerce businesses are granted tax breaks, there will be a decline in job losses and more people will even be employed. Take advantage of angel investors Facebook invested over $24 million in Andela in Nigeria. Andela is a tech hub where future tech engineers are trained. There are many bigger tech companies and angel investors with blank checks looking to invest in these tech startups. Of course, since technology is not based on oil, it will attract more investors. Hence, tech startups can take advantage of them. |
