"Ransomware" could only have been used properly if the boy's digital device and data stored on it was locked through encryption (preventing him from having access to it) and money/ransom was demanded before he could be given the decryption key(s) to regain access. The only things the fraudsters used were Social Engineering methods of pretexting, eliciting information and intimidation to get what they wanted from the boy.
