These three pictures have nothing to do with recent xenophobic violence in South Africa DEBUNKED / SOUTH AFRICA - 09/04/2019 Don’t be fooled by these fake videos of xenophobic attacks in South Africa Over the last few days, xenophobic violence has flared up in and around Johannesburg and Pretoria in South Africa, leaving at least five people dead. The police have made over 180 arrests. WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS GRAPHIC CONTENT Looking into the story, the FRANCE 24 Observers team talked to a truck driver from Zimbabwe, victim of an attack in March. We also came across several videos purporting to show recent acts of xenophobic violence in South Africa. But some of the footage circulating has nothing to do with what is going on. It is sometimes months, if not years old, and occasionally has nothing to do with South Africa at all. A disturbing video of a man on fire – filmed months ago One of the most striking videos to surface in the last few days shows a man in flames, supposedly a foreigner and victim of an extreme act of xenophobic violence by a group of South Africans. Just one copy of the video found on Twitter has garnered over 222,000 views (warning, graphic). If you search for the keywords “man burnt south africa”, however, you find this article by online news outlet TimesLIVE. It explains that two men, including the one pictured, were assaulted by a mob in January this year, in Hillbrow, central Johannesburg, after trying to steal a handbag. The one pictured later died of his injuries. These aren’t people falling from a roof in the middle of Johannesburg Watching the following video, viewed more than 195,000 times, you could be led to believe that these are people targeted by a xenophobic arson attack, jumping from a building on fire. Mbalenhle @Lee_Mbuhleigh Situation right now in Jozi, stay away from Bree street, Small streets guys. 2,846 4:12 PM - Sep 2, 2019 Twitter Ads info and privacy 3,995 people are talking about this Using a tool called InVid (click here to find out how), you can see that the same video was published on May 24. It depicts the fire that broke out at a commercial complex in Gujarat, India. More than 20 people died as a result. These aren’t mass arrests to expel Nigerians from the country – it’s another old video A video found by the NGO Africa Check shows dozens of people under arrest, on the ground, surrounded by police. The accompanying myth is that these are Nigerians, about to be deported, and that it somehow ties in with the xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians over the last few days. Psalm-Syne @BBNaija @Psalmklef77 Nigerians facing Deportation In South Africa... Uhmmmm this is Sad 1,104 10:49 PM - Sep 2, 2019 Twitter Ads info and privacy 2,350 people are talking about this We used InVid again, which showed that the video is old. It already caused an upset when it surfaced in May 2018, and was rumoured to show a mass arrest of suspected criminals in a hotel in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg. At the time, South African police said the video was fake, and said they had no idea where it had come from. The FRANCE 24 Observers team was not able to find the origin of this video, but the fact that it was posted more than a year ago on social media tells us it’s not linked to recent arrests. This road was blockaded by South African truckers, but during a different strike On Sunday, South African truck drivers began a strike in protest against the employment of foreign nationals. Videos like this one, viewed more than 25,000 times, show huge blockades: Human Bean @Enigma0163 N12 between Witbank and Jhb 277 5:19 PM - Sep 1, 2019 Twitter Ads info and privacy 355 people are talking about this These truckers were indeed staging a protest against foreign drivers, but this was in June 2018. You can trace the video back to this article by Independent Online. Have you seen a video which seems suspicious? One could see what Osun state did with their debt but the others especially Lagos,Ekiti and Ondo. |
IloveToMess:Yes,na Igboland...no....sorry, Igbo people no man's land,Osutribeman ![]() |
madenigga:Stop lying.Everybody is hustling.Your problem is longthroat.Don´t we have Yorubas abroad? Eschew crimes. |
hammerVJ: Okay, continue.. |
IloveToMess:Don´ts mind him.Lagos is Igboland....no sorry, no man´s land.. ![]() |
sapoyoro:Why don`t you use your brain for once?No matter what you will always drag Yoruba into your rants. All tribes, people have criminals among them even Tivs, Hausa,Yoruba,Idoma etc but Igbos criminality is going over the bend. We all try to play it down but foreigners would not have that. Do you know that most products in Nigeria are fake now because of the main people in charge. Yorubas are great travellers who even travel more than the Igbos but how many times have you heard that they are involved in crime compared to that of Igbos. The bane of Igbos who are into crimes is chest beating which is a trait in almost all Igbos. A white Professor...Prof. Ellis.... even wrote a book known as West Africa Illicit Drug Trade and specifically mentioned that Igbos especially from Anambra have been champions in drug peddling even since when I was still crawling. Nobody is a saint but when a particular people is constituting a nuisance almost all over the world, then we should begin to tell ourselves the truth. All of us should stop spoiling and soiling our names abroad.. |
aolawale025:Chest beating again. How do you know that the bulk importers are from SE? |
jneutron4000:lol You wan kill am? Lagos is Igbo people no man´s land and Lagos is where they have been most successful more than anywhere in the world. You will have to remove all your Obas and take them to Ibadan or Oshogbo so that they can install their Ezes in their ...no man´s land unless you want them to destroy you Yorubas from Ogbomosho like they destroyed the Ijaws when Ijaw took them as slaves and destroyed Igala when they came to Anambra. Igbo warriors just landed in Lagos also known as Igbos ..no man´s land. ![]()
|
Jonathan39:Osutribeman... Okay...Medicines,Law,Communication to mention just a few with facts of course....not imagination.. ![]() |
Jonathan39:Yes,brown roof republic is more developed than the entire Igboland AKA as thatched roof republic. |
legitnow:Just look at your mind ![]() |
legitnow:You are right. Not all Yorubas are ´trader´-minded but we are evenly spread in all professions unlike Igbos who are mainly traders. Being mostly traders cannot make you as rich, successful and developed as the Yorubas. I have seen one of you posting from as blog that Igbos are the most successful in Nigeria. lol Only Alakija will buy up all Igbo billionaires ![]() For example,I am not from Ibadan but I have been there severally especially the old part of Beere until I decided to tour this city. I can assure you that after Abuja and Lagos, there is no city as developed as Ibadan....maybe PH and Kano may come close to it. This Ibadan is mainly run and developed by Yorubas. Most and I say most of the trades and businesses are run by Yorubas. Spare parts, motor parts, computer things, very heavy machines, clothing materials etc are handled by mainlyYorubas. You can only find Igbos at Ekotedo,Iwo road,Gate etc.Yorubas control the market even more than Igbos do in Lagos. When you say you are more successful than Yorubas,it is good to say it amongst yourselves but putting it online and disturbing everybody with this petty claim, makes one wants to reply. I always say it that Yoruba have more succesful people than you, travel than you, have industries and businesses than you at home and abroad etc. These are verifiable facts not imagination that you always indulge in. Asians are mainly traders you see all over UK but are they richer than Britons or Americans who are not traders.? To top it,even with its old part, only Ibadan city is more developed than Igboland.....fact. |
legitnow:You are right. Not all Yorubas are ´trader´-minded but we are evenly spread in all professions unlike Igbos who are mainly traders. Being mostly traders cannot make you as rich, successful and developed like the Yorubas |
Iamgrey5:lol You for ask am if Igbos are half as successful as Yorubas and how? Some Igbos are delusional. In Lagos only where Igbos have made it more than anywhere in the world, tell him to compare what they have achieved and owned against what Yorubas have achieved and owned. Both in Nigeria and abroad, there are proofs and evidences that Igbos do not near the success of Yorubas. |
naijacentric:It is now 195 years that Ilorin which was founded by the progenitors of Afonja thousand of years ago,has had emir as the traditional rulers. The Imam still exists and so are many others who are Ilorin muslims but detest how FG continues to fuel this Fulani thing in Ilorin. The British does not have anything to do with Emirship again especially the fake one in Ilorin...they call it...copycat emir... The only thing retaining the Emir in Ilorin is the FG.The Yorubas have used both force and diplomacy....going to court,up to supreme court....but FG still sits on the white paper till date. Knowig Yoruba,Afonja descendants who are the original indigines and owners of Ilorin, will take their rightful inheritance. |
igbobuigbo:Okay. |
