dkings101: Thanks my oga...I found this thread too late. This is my second farming season and wd be my 1 year in the business. In this second season, I realise I over stock my tanks with fishes (I used the rubber tanks). As such, I didn't know I would be spending more that expected on feeding. The fast growers are in a 4000 litre tank and they are like 150 weighing 700g to 1kg. I ve begin selling them off to bar for N550 per kg so I can raise money to rear like 500 pics of melange. I am planning selling off the juvenile and post.
Though I foresee me losing this season. Can I see buyer who would buy the melange which weigh abt 300g? If yes hw much is the market price per kg?
Hard lesson learnt bt I won't give up as u didn't give up after losing millions of naira...I would only rear what I can feed on my third farming and I hope to recuperate my loss. My oga Giving up is not an option, it doesn't work with my system.. where is your location? if you are in Lagos I have ready buyers and how many kg of mélange do you presently have on ground. Sell them off then we go back to the drawing board. |

aumoria: I plan spawning soon. Using broodstocks of not less than 1kg and given all other factors in the proccess are ideal, how many broodstocks do I need to achieve a minimum of 25000 (twenty five thousand) fingerlings?
I will appreciate suggestions. May God continue to richly bless you. Hello sir you can use one or two broodstock to achieve 25,000 fingerlings. But the issue is not how many broodstock but How many will survive during the time frame of nurturing from fries to fingerlings. You can hatch 50, 000 but how many will make it to fingerlings. this is where good management is necessary. you can read up fries management on agricnetwork. |

How Farmers Can Make More Money in Catfish Farming: Part 1 level of success we get in catfish farming is usually tied to the level of management practices we decide to put in place in conjuction with the level of efficiency we achieve from our culture systems, writes Lanre Ogunsina, Fish Unlimited in Part 1. During the 2014 fish farming season, two farmer friends of mine in Nigeria stocked their earthen ponds with African catfish seeds Their ponds had water supplied from an adjacent, perenial, gentle river whose water quality parameters were suitable for fish farming. Farmer A's pond had a dimension of 20m X 7m X 1.4m Farmer B's pond had a dimension of 24m X 5m X 1.5m. Farmer A stocked 2500 juveniles and Farmer B stocked 2500 juveniles on Saturday, 29 March, 2014 Read up part 1 and 2 on www.agricnetwork.com |

Samojo4real: Submission: I believe Cocoyam leaf especially the red type is rich in protein because some tribes do eat it as form of vegetable. However, i am still at a loss on Leucaena Leucocephala tree and want any one that is familiar with it to enlighten us.
leucaena is actually high in protein esp. the seed and can replace soybean of fishmeal up to 25% max. inclusion level. presently, there is what they called leaf protein concentrate with as much as 50% cp. it can extracted from the leaves of any plant. this has also been used in feed formulation for fish. This is interesting bro. But is the seed readily available. |

Silvereze: Agric in nigeria has been neglected or abandoned for oil exploitation.since then agric is seen as second class profession.i am an agric. student of uniben.Actually i applied for medicine and was given Agric. as a consolation. As an agric student there are a lot of challenges facing us.firstly, only telling people u are studying agric. comes with them laughing at u and telling u career opportunitie u can embark into.Agric is capital intensive and if i graduate how will i even get money to start up a farming business. We are hardly shortlisted for scholarships and when schortlisted few are opportuned to get.agric is hard with a lot of farm work attached to it for which the lecturers share the produce.Government is not concerned about the welfare of agric students.I am fed up with studying Agric.in this country.I need advice pls.................. I wished I studied agriculture back in school. The least I could do was to serve at the ministry of agriculture during my nysc. Agriculture is d next big thing that is going to take over Nigeria. Forget abt oil company and the likes. Focus your mind on what u hv learnt and start up something. cheers www.agricnetwork.com |

I have been thinking of similar thing but cant come up with any idea, and information regarding such on the net has been scanty, please guru in the house over to you. We will all take this fish farming to the next level with the researching, experimenting and contributions of expert and we followers.
If this idea is ideal what sort of green leaves that will enhance growth so as not to endanger the fish with toxic leaves? I am also pondering on how it can be possible with the leaves, like you rightly said what sort of leaves.. where are the biologist and doc's in the house, oga belexy and co over to you guys o. before we bag ewedu in our fish pond. |
