In other words, you are questioning the veracity of Ambode's statement? Dude, he's the governor, a reputed professional accountant, has the finance, economic technocrat and the requisite data and metrics to arrive at his position, and even the IMF or any other external body for that matter will depend on data from the state government to make their evaluation. So yes, nobody should know the GDP of Lagos state government better than Ambode. As far as I'm concerned, his word (as governor) is just as credible as an IMF or whatever. Besides, he's been boldly making similar statements about the GDP of Lagos in different fora for more than a year now and no one has yet to openly counter or disclaim his assertion. But you can always go ahead and sponsor a counter or independent evaluation. cheesy

Ambode said that Lagos GDP value dropped from $131-billion to $91-billion as a result of the fluctuation in Foreign Exchange, so that means as at this point, Lagos GDP is 22% of Nigeria's economy. Compare that to the state of California's GDP (largest contributor to U.S GDP) which is $2.5-trillion while the total U.S GDP is $16.7trillion (representing 15% of America's GDP). California is reputed to be the 6th Largest economy in the world.

From the account written above, the rebellion against the Alafin was clearly institutional. Had nothing to do with a noble aim to stop slave trade.

Rebellions happen all the time in those days, so no biggie. Princes dethrone kings.

But what the account tells is a chilling tale of how the Yoruba country in its might fell from grass to grace with the complicity of powerful Yorubas.

I think there is a fine line between personal ambition and national preservation. And many influential Yoruba people who had the power to change history were on the side of the invaders.

Funny thing is that your likes would revere those Israelites of old, who were eventually uprooted, conquered and sent into wholesale slavery by foreign powers, literally excised from their homeland for centuries according to biblical accounts, while talking smack about Yorubas -- atleast Yorubas still managed to repel and even defeat the fulanis in spite of their so-called 'treachery'. Doesnt it bother yorubas that the only product of their supposedly hardwork is lagos. The same lagos that has been the capital of Nigeria since colonial times, the same lagos that has the been the headquarters of many corporate organisations like waec, ascon etc banks, oil companies, embassies, Igbo owned markets like Alaba, Balogun etc the same lagos where some key federal institutions have their headquarters. The same lagos whose seaport and airport through delibrate fed govt policies, robbed other seaports and airports of patronage.

They even boast of being liberal and crime free yet lagos crime record is worst in the country while UN declared the SE the best place to live.
The day Nigeria's dysfunctional politics of development removes the economic monopoly it places on lagos, it will fall back to the present ghost-mode status Ibadan enjoys notwithstanding its geographical location. If yorubas are peaceful why is lagos still their only city. Why does Igboland have the most modern, emmerging, flourishing cities in the country?
