Kastonkastroll:China, Cuba, Indonesia, Serbia and other places, use steam locomotives to this day. http://cs.trains.com/trn/f/111/t/66639.aspx Oh, and ''In 2014, France's locomotive and railcar fleet consisted of more than 5,700 vehicles.'' https://www.statista.com/statistics/495660/locomotive-and-transit-railcars-in-selected-countries-worldwide/ It's hardly a surprise then that Nigeria may use diesel locomotives. Many other places do, too, and they are not ''outdated''. In Nigeria's case, the reason for diesel locomotive engines is because of power unreliability, which makes electric-run trains unviable at present. |
Kingspin:Prosperity, of the type wrought by modern rail networks, and other social provisions, leads to peace. Where people are content, there's no fight. |
Strange that they cast us as savage and uncivilized, in Tarzan movies and other media, while looting thousands of our 'savage, uncivilized' artefacts and refusing to give them back. |
israelmao:True. You don't realise what you have till it's gone. |
mustmust:YES. ABSOLUTELY. |
themanderon:Nigeria is not going cap in hand and begging anybody for loans. Loans are offered, or requested, and not 'begged' for, in the international financial system. Loans are transactions in which both parties benefit. They are not 'favours'. Oh, and the USA is the biggest debtor nation on earth - owing trillions of dollars to China and others, but it is also the biggest aid donor on earth, so your points make no sense. |
Alanzazani:If we lack capacity, how can we dominate their economy? The Chinese are going in there with their manufactured goods, and their engineering capabilities, and their capital, to build things. WE in Nigeria are relying on those same Chinese to build our railways, airports etc. So how could we have gone to Liberia to do what we are not able to do for ourselves here in Nigeria? We need to develop indigenous capacity. Stop inviting South Africans and others to build our shopping malls for starters. If at this stage we cannot build international standard shopping malls without foreign help, we might as well pack up and go home, because we're useless. |
Guide777:Why not? A man could seek to rescue his drowning child, wife, or friend, even if he himself is in trouble. Didn't they teach you that in your church? Or was the pastor only talking about helping yourself, as usual? |
ZarahBuhari:Dude abeg. That $500k is what one local govt chairman will chop in his sleep, and you'll know nothing about it. Our problem is not that $500k to Guinea Bissau. Tomorrow you people will call yourselves christians and muslims. I wonder what you learn in your religions that makes you frown on helping your neighbour. I don't recall Jesus' or 'Muhammed' saying you should not help your neighbour until your own belly is full. |
chily11:The US is the biggest debtor nation in the world, as well as the biggest ''aid'' giver. So your point is senseless. |
Funny how Atiku, who, together with his PDP friends, have stolen billions of dollars from our coffers, are here crying foul over a measly half a million dollar donation to an impoverished neighbour. Even the fools here supporting Atiku's nonsensical criticism, are aware that he must have pilfered millions of dollars in his time. It's just a question of how many millions. Fuc.king hypocrites. |
princemillla:Where did you get ''500m USD'' from? |
majekdom2:Not necessarily. Otherwise India would be the world's most prosperous country, with its one billion people. Instead their people are among the poorest on earth. The truth is that if you are a developing country, it helps more if you have a low population, with significant resources. |
mynairaland2018:Shut up. Where and where have you been ''outside the country''? Self hating peabrain. Just get your nasty self off this thread. Worthless. |
HarkymTheOracle:You are misguided. The reason Nigeria fought for independence was because of the total neglect of the country by the colonial rulers. They ruled for nearly a century. Why didn't they work their magic in all that time? We were an undeveloped bush at independence without a single university, expressway, power station, or major industry. Meaning that if they had been in power till now, we would have been really, really backward. You must understand that Colonial Rule is not a system designed for your benefit, but for the economic benefit of the coloniser, who exports your resources and keeps the profits.. So it is foolhardy - dumb in fact - to ask them to ''remain''. |

Nearly 60 years after independence from colonial rule, why do our lawyers still wear these things on their heads? https://www.fixusjobs.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/nigeria-lawyer.jpg Is it that we cannot devise a home-grown attire for our lawyers, or is it that we so love the colonial rulers and exploiters of our land, that we just cannot let go of their legacy? Did somebody do juju on us to turn us into mumus where the colonialists are concerned? India, Pakistan, and parts of China were colonised by the British. But their legal systems have jettisoned those colonial wigs ages ago. In Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and other ex-colonies, still continue to wear them. What is wrong with us as a people? Seriously, we need to approach our ancestors for forgiveness, in case we did something to them that made them place a curse on us, that has turned us into dumb mumus without basic common sense and dignity, especially where it concerns Europeans. Imagine for a second how the white people will be laughing their heads off when they see us wearing these things, a full sixty years after independence. It's truly disgusting. |
Seven? This shouldn't be a topic unless it is at least seventy. |
Nigeria, Kenya to lead Africa's economies in 20 years - CNN survey Nigeria and Kenya have been projected to lead African economies in the next 20 years, according to CNN viewers. CNN on Wednesday asked its viewers to vote the countries they think would lead Africa in the said period. According to the tallied vote, 43 per cent said Nigeria would while Kenya garnered 41 per cent of the vote. South Africa was at position three with 9 per cent followed by Ethiopia at 7 per cent. The question was posed by CNN's business reporter Richard Quest while he was interviewing Kenya Airways Board Chairman Micheal Joseph. The report followed in the wake of the World Bank projecting positive prospects for Kenya's economic growth. The Bretton Woods institution said the country is on an upward trend despite the hitches staged by the disputed 2017 election. In the ranking, Kenya’s attractiveness to investors improved 19 places to position 61 out of 190 economies. The country held position 80 in the 2017 ease of doing business ranking. https://www.the-star.co.ke/news/2018/11/01/kenya-nigeria-to-lead-africas-economies-in-20-years-cnn-survey_c1844038 |
Binikingdowm:Igbo populations are in part coastal West Africans |
Elose11:There is zero evidence to support this claim. OP, the slave trade did not extend far beyond the West African coast. It wasn't very active at all inland. So you will find that the 'trade' was practised mostly in the coastal regions of West Africa. It wasn't really a 'trade' as such. More like European ships berthing at the Atlantic coast and ordering village chiefs to supply x number of slaves or risk destruction by cannon and gunfire, leading to wars among the coastal villages for captives to supply the whites. The people of the larger empires inland, with powerful armies, like Benin, Oyo, Kano States etc, were not involved in the 'trade', and could not be invaded to procure slaves. |
Genius100:Diversification is not about ''having/needing a lot of money to diversify''. It is about putting the right policies in place to spur production across multiple sectors. Instruments like tax breaks and low interest rates for selected industries, such as tourism, or the film industry, or car manufacturers. Or ensuring greater access to credit for certain industries like agribusiness or mining. Or building infrastructure with Publlc/Private Partnership financing. Here the govt collaborates with private firms to build infrastructure, and provides them with revenue subsidies like tax breaks or guaranteed annual revenues for a fixed time period. The government can actually launch a diversification strategy that does not require it to spend a single extra penny. So it's not really about money. It's about having a willing, clued-up leader, with the right economic team in place. As stated earlier, Nigeria IS on a path towards greater diversification. For instance, there are some very important rail projects coming on stream, such as the Ajaokuta-Itakpe line that will significantly boost steel production. There are other miscellanous developments, such as the recently commissioned 350 million dollar Sunti Golden Sugar Estate (SGSE) in Niger State, that will employ 10,000 people and make Nigeria a major centre for sugar production and exports. So we are not standing still. We are moving, though it could be more robust. Many of the countries below Nigeria on the revenue list you provided are far better than Nigeria, why? They have ''far lower populations than Nigeria'', and therefore far less demands on their budgets. A house of three people that earns N100,000 a month is richer than a house of ten people that earns 200,000 a month. |
sufferNsmiling:Excellent observations. These countries are all richer than Nigeria when you assess their budget amounts proportionate to population. |
ImperialYoruba:Wrong. People throw their waste out on the streets because there is no efficient public trash collection system. In a sane society, every house will have a huge bin in front that is emptied every three or four days by a local govt trash disposal truck. Same people with same mindset will ruin developments on the scale of global standards that you are talking about. Change in mindset must precede the utopian cities of our dreams. All the govt has to do is tar all the streets and include sidewalks and underground drainage. Then put a street sweeping system in place. Every where will be spotlessly clean....... See below....... It has NOTHING to do with ''the people''. Once you build the city well, you will have no problems. https://nacto.org/wp-content/themes/sink_nacto/views/design-guides/retrofit/urban-street-design-guide/images/sidewalks/carousel//retail-sidewalk.jpg |
I think he should go to Bayern. They will make him the new Messi. And yes, he is THAT talented. |
Henry Onyekuru https://e1.365dm.com/18/07/768x432/skysports-henry-onyekuru-onyekuru_4357318.jpg?20180709115542 According to The Mirror, UK, Henry Onyekuru is attracting interest from European giants Bayern Munich, Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain. Onyekuru, 21, made his name with KAS Eupen having arrived thanks to their links with the Aspire Academy, and he became a sensation in Belgium. The Nigerian winger hit 24 goals in the 2016-17 campaign, earning a move to Everton in the summer of 2017 as then-director of football Steve Walsh swooped to land him. However, work permit issues meant that he was loaned out to Anderlecht, where he scored 10 times in 28 games before having his season cut short by injury. Everton again loaned him out over the summer, sending him to Turkey with Galatasaray, where he has scored just twice – but is now attracting major interest from some huge European clubs. The Mirror report that Bayern Munich, Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain are all keen on Onyekuru, who could well leave Everton in 2019 without ever having played for them. Everton's director of football Marcel Brands must now decide whether to cash in on Onyekuru or remain hopeful that he will end up with a work permit to play for the club in the near future. With Ademola Lookman struggling for playing time as it is, adding another young winger into the mix could pose a problem for manager Marco Silva, and if Everton are offered major profit on their £7million outlay on Onyekuru, they may just be tempted into a deal. https://readeverton.com/2018/10/28/henry-onyekuru-attracting-interest-from-european-giants/ |
abdulaz:Yeah, there's something fishy about it. Helicopters don't just fall out of the sky, especially those belonging to billionaires. |
nwanneni:Maybe as a warning to Dangote and other non-white foreigners looking to buy up clubs there. |
RedboneSmith:My thoughts exactly. |
