Stupid relics

The British don't refer to their far less impressive Stonehenge ruins as ''stupid relics''.

They've turned the ruins into a tourist magnet bringing in countless hundreds of millions of pounds annually.

You need to change your mentality.

Studies are showing that the Queen of Sheba reference may actually be valid. The Eredo monument is reported by some scholars to be much older than 1,000 years, with some claiming it is over 5,000 years old, which would place it firmly in the time of the 'Queen of Sheba'.

New Lights on the Archaeology of Sungbo Eredo, South-Western Nigeria

Earlier studies carried out on Sungbo’s Eredo (embankment) showed that it is about 165 km in circumference and surrounds the whole of Ijebu Kingdom. From the date obtained by Aremu et al. (2013: 17), the structure is thought to have been built around 5000 years ago. However, it is possible that the site was also occupied during the medieval period, as evidenced in the remains around the sacred grove. This paper reports on a GPS survey of the site and excavations carried out during 2014 fieldwork archaeology intended to confirm or refute the dates previously obtained from the embankment. It examines the cultural materials recovered from the excavation, including Late Stone Age materials and those of the Neolithic period. Analysis of the Neolithic and Late Stone Age materials suggests that the site may be of greater antiquity than earlier reported and that this forest zone of West Africa was occupied at different time periods.

Did you know that the area known today as Ijebu-Ode was once home to the largest metropolis on the face of the Earth?

It was bigger than Rome. Bigger than ANY city on Earth.

It also had the largest man-made structure on the Earth, the Eredo Earthworks.

Happy learning. cool

Eredo: The Largest City in the Ancient World

Eredo Earthworks, Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria

On 23 May 1999, the Sunday Times (UK) carried an astonishing article entitled ''Jungle reveals traces of Sheba’s fabled kingdom''. Over the next few days many other papers followed suit. Even the Daily Mail one day later asked “Was the Queen of Sheba really a Black woman from Nigeria?” As the evidence emerged, however, the queen of Sheba link proved to be hype. The real Sheba was an Ethiopian queen who lived three thousand years ago. What was undeniable, however, was that the southern Nigerian rainforests had an even more amazing secret to tell.

The secret was this. During the Middle Ages, Africans built by far the largest city the world had ever seen. In size, this city dwarfed Baghdad, Cairo, Cordoba and Rome. The achievement was on a scale even bigger that that of the Great Pyramid of Giza, Africa’s most celebrated monument.

At one time, scholars used to divide the three thousand-year history of southern Nigeria into four great cultural periods. They used to speak of the Nok Culture, the Igbo-Ukwu Culture, the Yoruba Kingdoms and the Benin Empire. This view was boldly challenged by the findings of a team of Bournemouth University scholars led by archaeologist Dr Patrick Darling. Since 1994, the team discovered and mapped the remains of yet another Nigerian kingdom, this time covered by centuries of forest overgrowth. Barnaby Phillips of the BBC described the discoveries as possibly “Africa’s largest single monument.” As we shall see, this is typical British understatement.

At Eredo, in south western Nigeria, Darling’s team found a huge earthen wall with moated sections. This encircled an ancient kingdom or city. From the ditch to the summit of the rampart measured a towering 70 feet. According to Mark Macaskill of the Sunday Times, the rampart was “100 mile[s]” long and formed a rough circle, enclosing “more than 400 square miles.” The building was on a truly epic scale.

The builders shifted 3.5 million cubic metres of earth to build just the rampart alone. According to the BBC this is, incidentally, “one million cubic metres more than the amount of rock and earth used in the Great Pyramid at Giza.”

Therefore Eredo’s construction is estimated to have “involved about one million more man-hours that were necessary to build the Great Pyramid.” The ramparts may indicate the boundary of the original Ijebu kingdom that was ruled by a spiritual leader called the “Awujale”. Macaskill, however, disagrees. He describes Eredo as a “city”. If he is correct, this would make Eredo one of the very largest cities in all of human history. It was larger than modern London, and was definitely the largest city built in the ancient and mediaeval world.

Among the discoveries, a three-story ruin has been tentatively identified as the royal palace. It had living quarters, shrines and courtyards. It is possible that thousands of smaller buildings are still concealed by the forests. These will be mapped in time. Radiocarbon dating has so far established that the buildings and walls were more than 1,000 years old. Dates such as 800 AD have been given as a good ball-park figure.

People who live near the ruined kingdom or city today have traditions that a wealthy and childless queen, Bilikisu Sungbo, built the city. Some say that she built the city as a religious offering. It is also claimed that Sungbo’s territory had a gold and ivory trade. Moreover, her royal household are said to have kept eunuchs. Portuguese documents dating back 500 years, allude to the power of an Ijebu kingdom that some scholars think is possibly this very one. Today, the ruins continue to be of great importance. There are yearly pilgrimages to Sungbo’s grave.

Despite this great African achievement it is, however, disconcerting to note that racist theories are already being formulated about this kingdom. For example, Barnaby Phillips wrote that the building of Eredo was: “carried out by people who could not read or write, and with only the most basic of tools. Thousands of labourers – probably slaves – must have toiled in the thick rain forests and dark labyrinth swamps for years.”

Naturally, he offers no evidence for the assertions of slavery and illiteracy. On the other hand, the evidence of iron smelting and the other highly advanced metallurgical activities for which the Nigerian civilisations were world leaders seems to disprove the notion that the builders had only basic tools at their disposal.

On a happy note, Dr Darling, the leader of the archaeological team, suggested that Eredo may well gain World Heritage Status. This will put the Eredo kingdom or city on an equal footing with other African marvels such as the Pyramids of Giza and the city of Djenné. It also places this great achievement on a footing with other great marvels from around the world such as Stonehenge.

Nothing, there are many houses owned by foreigners in Nigeria. The street I used to live in Apapa, Lagos, all the houses on that street were owned by Lebanese men.

If Igbos get there own country, international and domestic laws will come into effect, and they will be protected.

Infact, owning a house or property in a foreign country is a good thing because it almost assures you of residency rights in that country

ABSOLUTE HORSE SHIIT.

DO NOT EXPECT NIGERIA, the same country you have traduced, hated, denigrated, publicly insulted, abused, and rejected, to turn around and grant you ''residency rights'' in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, after you have achieved your secessionist dream.

HOW DARE YOU?

Fact is Igbos would turn persona non grata in Nigeria.

If you think Ghana is giving you a hard time, Nigeria will be 5 times worse. You will be deported en masse to your Dot Republic, and those who remain will be endlessly harassed and extorted by the police.

And targeted by ordinary Nigerians.

I mean, you'll be foreigners. Illegal aliens needing to show your papers the minute you cross that Niger Bridge in Onitsha.

You would have nothing like the rights you hold today in Nigeria.

Dot com people.

Useless talk!
Folks like to fool themselves by pretending as if there's any sort of effects of voting in this so called "democracy". Inspite of the obvious riggings and impositions, all you hear is "wait for the next elections with your PVC"... That's is very viciously diversionary. Free and fair elections don't happen in Nigeria! You can choose to play the ostrich but the facts remain that in the east, results are written and announced, in order to make sure that anti establishment characters are seriously weeded out from governance.. They create a corrupt gang of political elite in Abuja and then go ahead to use the coercive instruments of the state to impose them in different state houses across the country..

How can ipob win elections in Nigeria!? These are the same people shot at by policemen and soldiers for just organizing prayer sessions!? The same people banned and termed terrorists for peacefully protesting! How can any sane person expect the same government that termed Igbos as terrorists to organize free and fair elections in which IPOB followers will become governors and senators and..., Isn't this kind of thinking so dangerously naive? People should start being serious in this country. Nigerias brand of democracy has zero respect for proper elections. If folks could have easily achieved their goals through the ballot boxes, there won't be any need for the scuffles we see these days..

Does anyone here think Nnamdi Kanu would submit himself to free and fair elections in a 'Biafra'?

This is a guy - a megalomaniac - who ordered his thugs to KILL any person in the East who left their homes on his declared day.

You sure have a lot of nerve complaining about Nigerian democracy when your Biafra is a certain banana republic in waiting.

Is Africa cursed

It is cursed with thoughtless people like you who don't understand how international commerce operates.

FYI, in today's world, nobody develops solely or even mostly through the export of raw materials. Not even diamonds.

Unless you are a tiny gulf state with huge oil reserves like Kuwait or UAE, you pretty much need to be into heavy manufacturing, to build a developed society today.

The income from raw materials export is NOT ENOUGH to develop.

The bottlenecks on African manufacturing, ie processing those raw materials into finished goods for export at higher prices than the raw materials, are the monstrous tariffs imposed by western, Asian and other nations on imports of African manufactured products.

This makes the African manufactured goods uncompetitive, discouraging manufacturing on the continent.

The USA has in recent years, implemented AGOA, to ease this discrimination against African manufactures, but they are only 20% of the world economy. The entire world needs to lift restrictions on the imports of African manufactured goods, to create a level playing field.

THAT is when Africa can finally take its rightful place in the comity of nations.

In the meantime, Africa will continue to improve on INTRA-African trade, and increasing the buying power of its citizenry, so as to eventually become self-sufficient in the production and sale of its manufactured products within the continent.

What you are saying is real and good but you can't base a country's growth by its population growth, these people that you are saying will be born, where will they see the money and resources to purchase these goods and make Nigeria a competitive and big market, even new and small countries can increase in population and there by their purchasing power will become so strong, i only support this issue of Biafra because of how the elites have reduced this country's economy to nothing, if security can be fixed, economy fixed to raise the standard of living of the common man, this present constitution removed and a new one enacted, and tribe and region abolished in the new constitution and everyone will be recognized as Nigerians without discrimination in appointment of officials into the government and a rotational presidency, if these can be done within a year, believe you me, secession will die a natural death in Nigeria, but its better to belong to a tiny country where there will be employment, equity, fairness, justice and where every leader will be held accountable to their actions when in office than to be a Nigerian at the moment

If you are not able to hold your state government to account today, how will you be able to hold your new small country's govt to account?

Are you aware the leadership will comprise pretty much the SAME people leading your state today?

In the new country, they will have the added benefit of full control of the military, so how will you hold them to account?

You are very naive in thinking that corruption will cease just because you have a new small country. If anything, it will become easier. And there will be no EFCC.

You want Nigeria to stand strong, that's a good thing but here's a quick question.

What exactly is Nigeria's dream and how exactly can it be achieved?

Nigeria's dream is simple. To take Africa and the black world to the next level.

She has all the tools to do it, MOST IMPORTANTLY HER POPULATION SIZE, which is her NUMBER 1 ASSET.

That guarantees that world investment capital will flow in her direction.

When investment capital flows in your direction, YOU HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO DEVELOP. grin

IT WILL SIMPLY JUST HAPPEN.

It's like when a fine girl is heading your way with nice big boobs, fine face and huge bakassi.

You will have no choice but to arrange yourself to receive her well. grin

It explains why the FG is spending so much on infrastructural development and upgrades of rail, roads, airports, bridges etc.

They know what is coming, and that Nigeria must be ready for it.

Like invention, NECESSITY is the mother of development.

Investment capital is not money that goes into the pockets of govt officials.

No company is coming to Nigeria to give politicians money.

This is capital that is going into manufacturing, agriculture, agro-processing, IT, financial and other services, construction, urban and rural development projects etc etc.

There is no way Nigeria will not become a developed nation at some point in the near future, based on this investment TSUNAMI heading its way.

Is that all there is to a nation? Talking about how its only 'business people' that leave for 'smaller' countries. My friend ,several of these people who have moved did so because of threat to life.

Begin to also look at it from that perspective.

There are small african countries where the GDP isnt up there, but people aren't being killed like fleas every day over the most trivial of issues.

America's murder rate is 40,000 a year. They are not talking of breaking up the country because of that.

Stop being weak and frail people who cannot stand development pangs.

Focus on getting a new government in that can change things.

You are a democracy with a rotational presidency which guarantees that power is shared between north and south.

There is nothing that can't be done.

You southerners will have the chance to rule in a year and half's time.

You have not been excluded from the political process. Use your chance when you get it to build the Nigeria you want.

That makes Nigeria a global investment magnet of the first order, going forward.

Always singing 'one nigeria' lullaby like his very existence depends on it.
He'd better start charting a new course for his people.

nigeria is dead and gone forever. We only await the burial date.

Talk is cheap.

Very very sour subject I must say. Everyone seems to be tired of this experiment, and the idea of a strong United Nigeria continuing to exist, to most is now like an impossible task.

The pride therein, is lost in the fact that if you give most nigerians (except people from certain extraction and by extension, all major ethic groups clamouring for secession) the opportunity to renounce their citizenship for a "better" country, they will at the snap of a finger.

Where then, is the power and the bond you speak of ,o.p, that makes Nigeria the giant that cant be shit on by colonialist, neocolonialists and imperialist?

Wether you agree or not ,the country is divided ,and only held in patches by weak ,eye service ,and skewed laws

The question then is, for how long can we continue like this?

I think that most people will be willing to identify with the so-called weak republics where they can be proud to identify with and possibly thrive in, than to remain in this strong but failing(to sound optimistic) contraption.

Dont forget, he that is down ,needs fear no fall, plus a living rabbit is better that a dead lion.

You don't know what you have until you lose it.

Visit Sierra Leone or Liberia. You will quickly rush back to Nigeria.

The people there are poor, and don't expect to become wealthy one day, like we all do in Nigeria, because of the sheer amount of opportunity and market size in this country.

Nigeria is a country where you can start by selling spare parts in the market, and from there become owner of the largest black-owned vehicle manufacturer on Earth. INNOSON. Pride of Nigeria.

Don't be deluded that everyone in Nigeria wants separation. Many SAY they do, but it's largely out of temporal frustration which a new administration or economic upturn could fix.

The business community of all ethnicities are not clamouring for separation.

They understand the importance of a large consumer market.

And they call the shots at the end of the day.
