Computers will replace bookkeeping but not "bookkeeping sense" If you have ever worked as a Vault teller or counter/merchant/bulk teller at a commercial bank in Nigeria, then you understand the importance of basic bookkeeping skills more than most. That feeling you get when the cash in your drawer does not match the balance in your system alone is enough to cause instantaneous cardiac arrest. Worse if it's foreign currency and a shortage. That feeling cannot be replaced by computers. Where is the error coming from? At that moment, bookkeeping will be more important than Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. You need bookkeeping sense. We all do. As the Father of Accounting said: "Let the merchant not sleep till debits equal the credits". |

Dear Recruiters, How do you feel when candidates ghost you, especially on the final interview or refuse to resume after being given an Offer? It would be appropriate when candidates let us know they don't feel the need to go for an interview or feel alright about the company ahead of time. Don't apply for a job and block the chances of other candidates when you have no interest in it. I recently got a call from a candidate who have been on my case for a job, after much preparation, he was scheduled for the interview, he did well and was sent to meet a high profile client. On the day of the interview, I called him to remind him, he said he is preparing to leave his house, I reached out to the client to let him know the candidate would be with him soon. Four hours later I called the client to know how the interview went, all for me to hear "Victoria you wasted my time and I cleared my schedule for no appearance". I called the candidate to know what the issue was, he said he did not remember he had an interview with the client that day. It is good not to start what you don't intend to finish. Be kind enough to decline ahead of time if you will not accept an offer or show up for interviews. |

This is a priceless piece of advice for new accountants. Do not rush into becoming a company's "only" accountant soon after graduation or qualifying. You know, those positions where you do not report to anyone. Yes, we are aware that you value "freedom." But The truth is that, regardless of your credentials, you must recognize that you know nothing when starting your career. You must learn from an experienced person. There is so much to learn that you will not find in books or on qualifying exams. As part of the learning and growth process, you will make many mistakes. ...and it would be beneficial to have the supervision of someone who can tell you what you are doing correctly or incorrectly. Those years will drive your progress faster than any trial-and-error method you intend to employ. This is likely not limited to young accountants. |
