Nigerian lecturers are one of the brightest in Africa, but totally underpaid. Here in Ghana professors are well paid far better than their Nigerian colleagues. Its a shame that Nigerians didn't value their education and educators. Will do anything to shame them.

Very good thread. The best way to create portfolio is to get some basic frontend projects and creste some advanced backend services for them. As a backend engineer you are more invested in the software development of things rather than design stuff. So your codes in git are enough. Also do well to read the job description to ensure that you are not applying for full stack position. Therefore your keywords should be the frameworks, django, spring boot, node, c++ and not backend. Because backend will bring up positions that require your knowledge of frontend.

I second the slack move. I'm also on qt's slack channel and have a private channel there that I haven't started using. Half of the people that come to the programming section are toxic. The other half are looking to get a foreign remote job from information gleaned in the programming sub forum and can leave "those idiots on NL"

I think to relocate out of the country these are the best ways

1. Freelance Job = Freelance Visa

As long as you have a freelance job, my advice is enter countries with low restriction and apply to another country from there.

2. Relocation Job
This is the hardest, it cost less to migrate an EU person than a Nigerian unless you are extremely too good .

No matter which way you go,

You need to be skilled to be considered


There is another route, but if you can run your company , have transactions running through it, you can have your own company employ you and you can show that you work for a company, this requires too much money.

@LikeAKing there's no golden rule to relocation/remote job, you have to be good to apply for jobs and pray for the best, sometimes it's luck and sometimes it's divine. My advice study your code and do more work, anything other than that is a waste of time.

It's not impossible though but I won't lie it's very very very hard. It's why I tell newbies that even though they are freelancing they shouldnt also forget looking for a job in a reputable company.

4. They do background checks. I had a company I am presently interviewing with in Italy message my present boss and my last boss to confirm I worked with them. My boss knows I am looking for a new job so he's cool with it.

5. Big tech companies relocate you out. If you get a job at Google they relocate you to UK or Ireland likewise Amazon, Netflix et Al. Microsoft has an office in Nigeria but I have met engineers that got relocated to branches abroad cause they applied to those places.
