At the moment with the few comments here,I take it that some people are having babies only because they saw others having,they really don't know why they are even having them.

It breaks my heart seeing how many african kids are neglected,especially many Nigerian kids.

I think that kids are treasures that shouldn't be had by everyone/anyone,they should only be made by those that knew their worth and can take good care of them,not just anyone.

You're talking like this because you've been seeing kids raise kids. There are few people who won't think of getting anyone pregnant or being pregnant because they want the best for their child and they know how important it is to give them the best of everything so they'll rather chill before they pop babies into this world. But that's your plan. There are others who will keep popping out regardless of what's on ground they are the kind that are ok with even below standard of living not because they don't want good but its what they can afford and mostly they're products of bad upbringing and prolly no education. Do you want to tell a conductor,vulganizer, okada man and other earners alike to chill till he can afford a montessori for his child before popping? and mostly people like this got no chill when they decide to start popping. And as someone discussed you always yearn to have your own blood, it's happiness on its own.

Without the help of religious institutions, these expectations would have left many in chains. Those who cannot cope with religious services, help themselves out with drugs, alcohol, brothel services, etc.

Exactly, and it's a tough battle. Even in developed societies with standard healthcare you still see them complain about a lot of people being undiagnosed and medications for depression not always giving desired results, especially for those with acute depression which is why it is always followed with therapy, and the thing about depression is that it cuts across several other mental illnesses such as PSTD,ADHD,Bipolar just too too many.

Now considering a country like Nigeria with its kind of healthcare facing mental illnesses like depression is just sad. Depression is deep, very deep it's a combination of losing hope and purpose all together and feeling the pain of not being able to change it which is why many victims see suicide as a way out and the expectations aren't reducing.

No matter how irreligious I'm, I can't downplay the use of hope which every one runs on even if it's subconsciously and which these religious institutions offer.

I'm inclined to agree, but majority aren't aware and this is because those affected seldom know what depression is. And depressed persons always need hope which religious institutions offer through some deity, these institutions are the reason why we still have many sane people around.

Really I think this is what the concept of God is about. If you understand the concept to a point you'll notice there's no attribute attached to God that doesn't fit Wicked,Loving,Heartless,Kind, and many other's everything fits. You know what what the OP has written is a fact to those who recognize it.
To all those who claim that they're are agnostics, deists and other faces of unbelief just know you're still scared and it's normal you're either atheist or theist.

It took me years to be certain that I didn't believe anymore during these years it was a shift from theist-Agnostic-Deist-Agnostic then finally atheist because in all these other faces you still can't prove shit about God. It's just as if you're chosing a side incase rapture comes so you have something to bargain with and say at least you didn't disbelieve totally then maybe God can carve out a part for you in heaven.

Really the reason why I hate many atheist on nairaland is because of the people like OP they're so intelligent but they don't see the ying yang in religion. Because they don't need the promise of heaven to be good they think everyone would operate like that. Plus trying to get people to understand that there's no God in a country like Nigeria isn't even adivasable. I always say these stupid atheists will be the ones to create God all over again when they think they've liberated people from it. They would wish they never took what these theists revere.

If you've read the bible and the Quran you'll realise there's just too many truths in those books forget all the bestiality, rape, murder, women dregrading stories in it.
