The Shiloh Shepherd was developed by a breeder named Tina Barber during the late 1960s to early 1970s in New York, USA.

She wanted to create a breed similar to the German Shepherd (GSD) but bigger, gentler, and calmer.

To create the Shiloh, Barber used large dogs such as the German Shepherd and Alaskan Malamute as foundation stock.

The Malamute added its sociable nature and adaptability to the mix, while the Gsd contributed its intelligence to the resulting crossbreed. it was originally bred as a companion, its drive and trainability make the Shiloh Shepherd an efficient working dog. Since 2004, the crossbreed has been recognized by the American Herding Breed Association.

Many of these intelligent hybrids have also been trained for search and rescue and therapy work. Shilohs have frequently been awarded Canine Good Citizen by the American Kennel Club and have received Companion Dog and Utility Dog titles as well.

SIZE OF A SHILOH

These are huge dogs, and their size can make them a little tricky to handle. A male Shiloh Shepherd weighs around 100 to 130 pounds (45 to 59 kg) and stands at 28 to 30 inches (71 to 76 cm ) tall.

Female Shilohs are a little lighter, with an average weight of 80 to 100 pounds (36 to 45 kg).

What does a SHILOH SHEPHERD looks like then?!

The Shiloh Shepherd looks a lot like the GSD, except that the Shiloh is much larger and it has a straighter back. Its chest is deep and full, and it has a long, slightly curvy, and plush tail.
These dogs have a domed, broad head with a tapered muzzle and black lips. The Shiloh Shepherd’s ears are triangular and erect when alert, while its eyes can come in shades of dark to light brown.
The Shiloh Shepherd can have either a smooth coat or a plush coat. The smooth coat features a shorter undercoat and a top coat of coarse, dense fur.
On the other hand, the Shiloh’s plush coat will have a longer, softer undercoat, thicker fur around the neck, and feathering on the legs and ears.

Let’s talk about the SHILOH SHEPHERD, shall we?!
To be honest I’ve come to grow so attracted to this dog breed naturally I like wolves probably the main reason I’m attracted to wolf like dogs plus the length of their coat is something that catches my attention (I love hairy dogs). So when you add WOLF + LONG HAIR = MY FAVORITE KIND OF DOG and that is what a SHILOH SHEPHERD is

Reasons for restricting his movements at night
-To monitor his movements so he doesn’t pick up/swallow sth harmful (like when I came back yesterday he vomited a piece of foam which he must’ve picked up when they allowed him roam without inspecting)
-To prevent him from destroying stuffs and all around the house....

Update “Ryeo’s perspective”

Okay so I got back yday and boy was Aslan glad to see me; he was his usual stubborn self all through the night but this time little did he know that things were different .My parents came to check on him at his every beck and call (this is what he enjoyed doing while I was away ) I told them he was with me and I wasn’t allowing him to roam around the house that’s why he kept barking so they needn’t worry.My oh my twas a Warfare all night long cos I literally held onto his chain lol (binding him to my wrist all night long) he kept biting and all. It wasn’t easy but it was fun.
Morning came and we became friends again, he got his food as early as possible and we played a lot (mostly running around the inside of the house mainly preparing him ahead for our daily routine walk which I intend to start probably when he’s around 4 months old) , after I was sure I had his attention we rehearsed the “SIT” command and I was so glad that he’s getting along quite well
It’s quite wonderful to be in care of a puppy,the feeling alone is elating

4. Pyrenean Mastiff

The Pyrenean mastiff is a large breed of livestock guardian dog from the autonomous community of Aragón in northeastern Spain. It was traditionally used to protect flocks during the annual transhumance to high summer pasture in the Pyrenees.
The Pyrenean Mastiff originated in the historic Kingdom of Aragon, where it has been documented since the Middle Ages. Its origins and purpose were in the annual transhumance of flocks to the high pastures of the Pyrenees for the summer months, and the return to lower ground for the winter. The dogs were kept with the sheep from an early age; their job was to protect the flocks from predators, and in particular from wolves. Like other European flock guardian breeds, they were often fitted with a spiked metal wolf collar or carlanca for extra protection. Although for those who are quite familiar with the Caucasian shepherd,it will be quite easy to differentiate between the two they’ll say it rather looks like a Saint Bernard but then the Pyrenean mastiff is also a very large dog on its own.The minimum acceptable height at the withers for males is 77 centimetres (30 in), and for females 72 centimetres (28 in); there is no upper limit, and larger dogs are preferred. They have a heavy white coat with a mask of a darker colour, and often with patches of the same colour on the body; the ears always have darker spots.The weight varies between about 60 kilograms (130 lb) and 90 kilograms (200 lb)

You do have a point boss, everyone knows what he’s looking for in a dog (plus he was the one asking for a rating here on nairaland (eyes rolling) he should’ve seen it coming )

One thing If I might add, insisting on seeing the parents of the pup you intend to buy saves you the trouble as you’ll always know what to expect from the puppy (in terms of looks, growth e.t.c)

Naturally when I come across a snake while walking along the road/bushy area,I let it slide by so far it mind it's business cos I believe I'm the one intruding on its private space but reverse is the case when it finds its way indoors

And that is the main problem we have in our dog section of today “MISINFORMATION” and most of our experienced breeders/those who know more about these dog breeds are not even helping the matter at all,the only time you see them active is when an individual must have fallen as a victim to Misinformation and they come out to criticize or talk him down instead of educating
Actually there’s nothing wrong in having any of those dog breeds above, most of them are as good and fierce as the OVCHARKA when it comes to guarding livestock/property (although they may be lacking in size compared to the OVCHARKA) but it is wrong to call a dog something it’s not all in the name of making sales. If you’re not proud of what you’re breeding or perhaps not sure of what it is, why breed it at all ......And then again some breeders are actually not aware that there are other breeds that might look a lot like what they are trying to get so they end up getting/importing something else and believe since it is imported/expensive ,it’s original.
NOTE: You can breed whatever you want, but giving/spreading wrong information about it is totally wrong.

3. LEONBERGER

The LEONBERGER also referred to as (Leo) is a dog breed, whose name was derived from the city of Leonberg in Baden-Württemberg, Germany is also a dog breed that looks like the OVCHARKA.This breed occurs with a generous double coat; the Leonberger is a large, muscular, and elegant dog with balanced body type, medium temperament, and dramatic presence. The head is adorned with a striking black mask and projects the breed's distinct expression of intelligence, pride, and kindliness. Remaining true to their early roots as a capable family and working dog and search-and-rescue dog (particularly water), the surprisingly agile Leonberger is sound and coordinated, with both strength in bearing and elegance in movement. A sexually dimorphic breed, the Leonberger possesses either a strongly masculine or elegantly feminine form, making gender immediately discernible.
Capable of demanding work, the Leonberger is a dog of ample substance. Its frame is supported with well-muscled, medium to heavy bone in direct proportion to its size. A roomy chest is sufficiently broad and deep for the purpose of work. Seen in profile, the chest curves inward from the prosternum, tangentially joins at the elbow to its underline at 50% of the withers' height, and then continues slightly upward toward the stifle.

2. Sarplaninac shepherd

The sarplaninac shepherd is a dog breed of the livestock guardian type. It is named after the Sar Mountains (Sar Planina), a mountain range in the Balkans. In Ottoman times, the dogs of the breed spent the summer in the area of the Sar Mountains and the winter in Thessaly, depending on the needs of the sheep they are used to protect.

The Sarplaninac is a large, strongly built dog. The body is slightly longer than the height at the withers, and the front legs account for approximately 55% of the height. The head is large but proportional to the body, with dark eyes.

The Sarplaninac is a robust, well proportioned dog with plenty of bone, of a size that is well above the average and with a thick, long, rather coarse coat that emphasizes the short coupled appearance. According to the FCI breed standard males should weigh between 35 and 45 kilograms (77 and 99 lb) with females slightly smaller at around 30–40 kilograms (66–88 lb). The average height is quoted as 62 centimetres (24 in) for males with females at 58 centimetres (23 in).

The coat is dense, about 4 inches (10 cm) in length, and can be rough or smooth.

All Sarplaninac are solid in colour: fawn, iron grey, white or almost black; usually sable or gray with darker "overalls" on the head and back, the undercoat being paler. The colour need not be completely uniform, and most Sarplaninac have several different shades of the same colour fading into one another. There are no bicolours and no uniformly black-coated dogs among purebreds, but odd-coloured specimens do exist.

1. Karst shepherd

The karst shepherd a breed of dog of the livestock guardian type, originating in Slovenia.The Karst Shepherd Dog is of medium size, harmonious, robust, endowed with a well-developed musculature and a strong constitution. The tail and ears are hanging. Length of body in proportion to height at withers should be no less than 9 : 8. Skull is a little longer (13 to 14 cm) than the muzzle (11 to 12 cm / 4.3 to 4.7 in). Width of skull (13 to 14 cm / 5.2 to 5.5 in) is equal to its length.

Their hair is well furnished, long, flat, with abundant undercoat. The head the front edges of the ears and the front part of the legs covered with short hair. The back edge of the ears has longer and more supple hair.Coat is iron grey; especially on the back, a dark shade is preferred; towards the belly and the limbs, the colour turns without visible transition to a light grey or sandy colour, with a dark streak on the front parts of the limbs. The dark mask on the muzzle spreads on to the skull. On the back part of the head it is bordered with grey or sandy or pale fawn hair overlaid with black.
As much as it looks like the Caucasian shepherd it shares no close history,it’s rather more related to the next dog (No 2) on the list

Good morning all,
And so it turned out that milady was just missing me ‘her best bud’ she’s been energetic since I got back. I guess she missed all the daily exercises, training and fun time we had together.
Aslan on the other hand is proving to be a tough one though he’s friendly and all but he does what he wants when he wants (I’ll give him till next week to fully settle in by then he would be 12 weeks plus)
But then I also noticed that he learnt a couple things from his mom or perhaps natural instincts (some of those things I had to teach Mabel he already knows) like he already picked a spot as his toilet and whenever he gets the chance to go out he does his thing outside the house but I frown at letting him venture out at his present age because he hasn’t completed his vaccinations.

And so we had some outdoor fun

I got a call yesterday that milady was acting dull and sluggish, she literally rejected all food given to her (this put my mind into a restless state where I was,I couldn’t concentrate because Mabel has never given me any trouble as regards health issues and all, and also never has she rejected any yummy food given to her before now).....


Only for me to recieve a call later this morning that she later ate her food after they added sardine together with egg in her food (twas a relief to hear this but I was still worried that I had to rush home today)...

“So pops came home today to check on us after a long time away from home and boy we were all glad to see him as we jumped on him on sight even my senior Mabel who had lost her appetite since a day ago gained strength on seeing him
He didn’t really like the state he met us, to him the people at home were not doing enough to take care of us, he wasn’t so happy about that but then he promised to be back fully by next week so I can’t wait to have back in the house. By the way he noticed some secretions just right under my eyes like accumulation of watery discharge and has been worried since,does anyone have an idea as to what to use to clear this before we hit the vet again (eyes rolling)” says Aslan
