FamilyRe: Nigerian Billionaire Battles British Wife Over $21million Divorce Payout by Sagamite(m): 5:12pm On Jul 18, 2012
MRbrownJAY: ^^ bro, it is a business transaction, and thats the easiest (and cheapest) way to solve the problem at hand.......
12millions would be about 1% of your wealth (if he was worth 1 billion), so i dont know about you, but thats a "more than fair" price to pay to the mother of your 4kids (drama free)
If he is going to be "more than fair" that should be his decision. The justice system should be fair, not more than fair. Based on fairness, the wife should live with what she is worth based on her contribution, irrespective of his wealth. If he wants to be more than fair, then it should be up to him to decide to be more than fair and he has decided: "No".

He has already offered her more than she contributed and more than she has the ability to earn on her own. She should stop being greedy.

MRbrownJAY: bro, no matter how we want to look at it, you will have to help the lady out to resettle (unless you want her to live in some shack in the forest with YOUR four kids?).... now i would cry foul like you if she demanded HALF or even 20%.....but 2% is not that much of a settlement, and this greedy man should have settled quickly, and be dopne with the gangrene.
She surely would not be living in a shack with the £2.5m lump sum and £35K a year he is offering. Not to talk of the fact she is also working and getting her own salary, you know.

There are people living very comfortable with a quarter of that in this same UK.

Freddieyankee: How can a nation move forward when we have people thinking like morons and idiots......
For those who said fashola did the wrong thing and that police or LASMA should av stopped the man or arrestted him.... My question is how many times have this people ( police and LASMA ) been beaten by this military men.... The Governor is a great example of how things should be done to help better our country.... He was in the traffic as well, he had the powers to tell his escorts to clear up the road for him but he didn't and one animal who felt like nigeria belongs to his father went on the BRT lane......

Cuddlemii: This is what I was trying to avoid when I advised for a team debate.
Nairaland men and egocentrism. angry
I would prefer a team win rather than individual winners
Oam4j say something, what do you think of all these new developments?
Let me advice you on criteria for each:

Judges: Intelligent, objective and logical people.

Debaters: Intelligent, knowledgeable, articulate and creative thinkers.
LiteratureRe: Nairaland's Literary & Debating Day - You Are Cordially Invited! by Sagamite(m): 2:41pm On Jul 18, 2012
maclatunji: Like seriously? If you make this guy a judge, count me out completely. I don't care if his IQ is 1000.
Why na?

Lets face it, I am always going to be the right one, so where is the excitement when you know who the winner will be?

Don't you think Judge should be the most intelligent, objective and logical person one can find?
LiteratureRe: Nairaland's Literary & Debating Day - You Are Cordially Invited! by Sagamite(m):
Cuddlemii: Thank you for your suggestions. This is my take but it can still be adjusted to suit everyone.

Debaters-
On a forum with 921481 members, I think its unfair to pick few debaters. If only time would permit, the list would have been more than that.

Debaters would be advised on time management and proper structure. Two base camp accounts for both teams have been created, this would help them have a conference to strategize and organize their delivery away from prying eyes or competitors. The base camp account would have all the rules and time allocation on it by the time team mates log in.

Judges-
Having the audience judge wont be entirely successful because of multi ID syndrome. Do we really have the time to have the audience argue and fight over winners? Having official judges would make it more orderly. We can have another thread for the audience to vote, someone tallies it all together and update us

Audience-
Won't comment until after the debate or during breaks. If they like a post, they can simply use the "like" button. I want our debaters to be comfortable and only exposed to constructive criticism by the judges. I also don't want the audience to give debaters points to use in winning.
Honestly, I would be better off as a Judge than as a Debater because nobody has a better logical or intellectual brain than the one I have.

I am simply a God in that department.

I tend to always be right, so it would be best to have others debate and I cut the illogicality and unratiocinated parts out from their arguments.

I already have years of experience doing such on NL.

And your point is?

Krucifax: Typical totalitarian Nigerian mentality. Yes development is welcome but at what cost. By doing this they will now create a refuge crisis, with all it's related issues of homelessness, crime, disease. What of all the innocent children of Makoko residentshuh Is it their fault their parents brought them to this world??

Our people should really apply common sense when addressing matters. Your high-handedness is similar to that adopted by the elite when they opted to remove fuel subsidy,I'm sure they were also saying "why are they rioting this is good for development"!!

And for your information shanty towns are all over the world America included so get your facts right. Many U.S citizens now live in tents without water or light supply in the outskirts of cities they can't afford to live in. I know b'cos I'm well traveled and have seen this myself. But don't take my word for it here's a link i got for you to go educate yourselves http://www.bbc.co.uk/panorama/hi/front_page/newsid_9694000/9694094.stm
Why don't you go and set up a shanty town in Manhattan and see what will happen to it.
PoliticsRe: Security Agents Demolish Makoko Waterfront Slum In Lagos by Sagamite(m):
I feel pity for the residents but I do realise this had to happen one day.

I can understand the specious arguments about the need to relocate them, but when you think about solutions, you also have to think about risk.

- No 1, there is no reliable record of the people and number of people that live in Makoko, so if you try to relocate them, you should be ready for the typical Nigerian crooked minds to burn the public funds and the majority of the supposed beneficiaries will not benefit.

- No 2, they are there illegally, do you reward illegality?

- No 3, what happens when other illegal settlements demand relocation before demolition? You will burn public funds? You think Nigeria is Norway?

- No 4, if you relocate them to a new place temporarily that then turns into a new nuisance, how will the government ever have the mouth to challenge that new nuisance when this time the dwellers can now claim it is legal since it was the government that provided the location for them?

You see?

Hence, unfortunately, the only pragmatic solution to ease their pain is to give them sufficient notice to vacate. Something like 2 years so their rental agreements would have expired and they should have saved enough. Any foool that renews his rental agreement, na im wahala.

antitpiah: Dont forget that I am now an American, we are allowed to put "a" before a word starting with a vowel. grin

On a more serious note, since you arent as educated as I am, I dont mind teaching you one or two things as part of my corporate responsibility.

It is true that according to the rules “a” should come before words that begin with consonants (e.g., b, c ,d) while “an” should be before words that begin with vowels (e.g., a,e,i). Listen carefully now: the usage is determined by the pronunciation and not by the spelling, as many a retardeddd student wrongly assume. Dont be ashamed, I understand that English is not your first language, therefore, grammatically, you say “an hour” because hour begins with a vowel sound and “a history” because history begins with a consonant sound.

Similarly you could say “a intimate” even if intimate begins with a “i.” That is because the pronunciation sometimes , depending on the speaker and accent ( e.g NY accent), begins with “nt”, which is a consonant sound. So my friend from across the pond, a product of a failed education system, always follow your ear: if the word starts with a vowel sound, use AN. If it starts with a consonant sound, use A. Emphasis on sound. The English language is a very dynamic language which doesnt always lend itself well to rigid rules. grin

TravelRe: Lagos Traffic Fines For Offenders by Sagamite(m): 10:59pm On Jul 17, 2012
The Lagos State House of Assembly have passed a bill to regulate road usage in the state.

The bill which is aimed at regulating vehicle movement and placing strict sanctions on any vehicle that disobeys the law.

1.Riding a motor-cycle against traffic

2. Riding on the kerb, median or road setbacks

(Penalty) 1st time offender – N20,000.00 subsequent offender N30,000.00 or the riders motor-cycle will be impounded

Does this only apply to motor-cycles (Okada)

3.One way driving.

(Penalty) 3year jail term after psychiatric examination

Are all one-way well and visibly signated? The last time I was in Nigeria, these one-way signs were barely 5ft 8inches tall, the diameters small and indistinguishable from petty trade signs illegally put up. You could at best only see the sign at the last minute. I dare say the public servants responsible for this should utilise the psychiatric examination first before anyone else.

4. Smoking while driving

(Penalty) N20,000.00 fine

Are they fcking have a laugh? This a cretinous law!

5. Failure to give way to traffic on the left at a roundabout
(Penalty) N20,000.00 fine

The fine for this is excessive and would be hard to enforce. If they do not have an accident, how would you be able to prove they committed the offence?

6. Disobeying traffic control
(Penalty) N20,000.00

7.Violation of route by commercial vehicles
(Penalty) N20, 000.00 fine.

8. Riding motor-cycle without crash helmet for rider and passenger
(Penalty) N20, 000: 00 or 3years imprisonment or both.

Kind of harsh when a passenger is included. What about a motorcyclist that accidentally meets a friend on the way and gives the friend a ride? Laws should be people friendly when harm is not being done to others.

9. Under aged person, under 18yrs old riding a motorcycle
(Penalty) N20,000.00.

Who will pay it? They think all this Malo almajiri pikins that journey to Lagos can ride Okada have parents to come and pay fines? How can you prove someones age in a country without birth records?

10. Driving without valid driver’s license.

(Penalty) Vehicle to be impounded.

11. Learner driver without permit
(Penalty) N20,000.00.

12. Driving with fake number plate
(Penalty) 1st offender N20,000.00 and 6 month imprisonment or both.
