CrimeDrug Addict Man Allegedly Strangles His Mother To Death In Ogun by saintbillion(op): 10:38am On Jul 17, 2023
A suspected drug addict identified as Samson Sikiru, has been arrested for allegedly killing his mother, a prophetess, in Itanrin Axis of Ijebu Ode in Ogun State.

According to Ogun journalist, Tosin, the 32-year-old suspect strangled his mother to death in the early hours of Sunday, 16th July, 2023.

A distress call was made to Ijebu Rewa Organisation about the sad incident that happened overnight after Samson's younger brother who was on night shift, had gone to work.

According to neighbours, Samson left home for over five years, only for him to return home a month ago.

His mother was said to have made several complaints to neighbours and security operatives about the suspect using hard drugs.

“A neighbour who wants to be anonymous told Ijebu Rewa that Samson rushed to him in the early hours of today (Sunday) saying that the Prophetess (Samson’s Mother) had slumped and died. After the neighbours rushed inside and only for them to realize the mother was strangled to death as evidence of marks were all over her neck and leg, the left hand had broken, there was blood stain mark on Samson’s fingernails. The neighbors held onto him and he started saying he does not know anything and how it happened. It dawns on them that Samson was under the influence of hard drugs to have strangled his own mother to death,” the report says.

“It is indeed a sad day for the people in Itanrin axis of Ijebu-Ode. Samson has been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force and the mother's corpse has been deposited at the Morgue for further investigation.”

Politics70 Billion Paliative: Falana Slams NASS Members, Says New Allowances Illegal by saintbillion(op): 6:26am On Jul 17, 2023
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has condemned the National Assembly over the decision to allocate N70 billion as palliatives for its members.

Falana, in a press statement released on Sunday, said the move is illegal and contemptuous.

The allocation of N70 billion, disbursed among 306 newly elected members, in addition to N40 billion set aside for the purchase of Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and bulletproof cars for principal officials and members, has become contentious with many Nigerians criticizing the lawmakers for being insensitive at a time when the economy is biting hard.

In the statement, Falana called attention to the blatant breach of the relevant provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and urged the immediate reversal of these controversial measures.

He said, “Out of sheer insensitivity coupled with impunity, the members of the National Assembly, regardless of political affiliation, conspired to breach the relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 by padding the Supplementary Appropriation Bill, 2023 to provide the so-called palliative of N70 billion for 306 newly elected members.

“While the masses of Nigeria are groaning under the excruciating economic pains unleashed on them by the ruling class, the National Assembly has awarded N228.7 million to each of the newly elected legislators. As if that is not enough, the members of the National Assembly have earmarked N40 billion to purchase 465 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and bulletproof cars for principal officials and members. However, the legislators approved the sum of N500 billion for 12 million indigent people in a country where the National Bureau of Statistics has said that “62.9 per cent of people (133 million) are multidimensionally poor.”

According to Falana, these decisions blatantly contravene Section 70 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, which outlines the appropriate remuneration and allowances for members of the National Assembly.

Citing recent court judgements which have ruled against such excessive allowances, he said, “In Monday Ubani & Anor. v Attorney-General of the federation & Ors (Suit No FHC/LA/CS/690/ 2018), the learned trial Judge, Professor Chuka Obiozor had cause to interpret the above provision of the Constitution when he held that, ‘The national assembly service commission has no power whatsoever to fix and determine or allocate the remuneration, allowances, salaries, emoluments or monetary values to the members of the national assembly’. His Lordship observed that given many years of extreme poverty in the country, and the inability of several state governments to pay salaries of workers and pensions, the refusal or failure of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission to review and cut the salaries and allowances of members of the national assembly is a gross violation of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended) and the commission’s own Act.”

He called on the leadership and members of the National Assembly to reverse the controversial allowances and also stop the purchase of luxury vehicles.

PoliticsAttacks By Opposition Sent Me Back To School – Adeleke by saintbillion(op): 6:13am On Jul 17, 2023
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has advised that age should not be seen as a barrier to pursuing educational dreams, saying one of the conditions he was given before his 2022 governorship ambition was for him to complete his education.

Adeleke spoke at the combined 9th undergraduate and 5th postgraduate convocation ceremonies of the Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State, on Sunday, where 75 postgraduate and 537 undergraduate students were conferred with various degrees.

The governor, who said after losing 2018 governorship election he was subjected to the worst personality attacks and assaults, added that he had to leave the country to escape attack and to complete his degree programme, after his elder brother, Dr. Deji Adeleke insisted he must complete his education, or forgo his 2022 governorship ambition.

He said, “Dr Tajudeen Adeleke encouraged me to move ahead. Before I went on exile, he called me to a meeting where we discussed. He told that I should look at what I have been subjected to by those saying I was not educated. He advised that I should go to America for studies.

“He said the only thing I can do for Osun people, if I am ready to be governor, I must get educated, I must complete my education; that without completing it, I should forget my governorship ambition.

“At my age then, I successfully re-enrolled and completed my degree programme. I am proud of that achievement and I thank my family and friends for their total support.

“I came back to re-contest in 2022 as a brand new graduate. The rest is now history. What is the lesson? Our age must never be a barrier to educational pursuit. What we need is commitment and passion to succeed.”

In his remarks, Dr Deji Adeleke, who is the founder of the university, said if Nigerians resolved to change the country for better, it could be achieved.

He called on Nigerians that desire a good country to contribute their quota to nation-building and stop apportioning blame to those in positions of authority.

CrimeItalian Man Cleared Of Sexual Assault Because The Grope Only Lasted 10 Seconds by saintbillion(op): 9:07am On Jul 14, 2023
Italian school caretaker cleared of s3xual assault because the grope only lasted less than 10 seconds

There's been an uproar in Italy after a Judge acquitted a school caretaker of sexually assaulting a pupil because it "lasted less than ten seconds".

The teen was walking up a staircase at a school in Rome with a friend at the time of the incident. 66-year-old Antonio Avola had put his hand down the trousers of a 17-year-old girl before touching her buttocks and pulling on her underwear.

Avola told her: “Love, you know I was joking.” The youngster reported the caretaker to police in April 2022. He admitted to touching the girl without her consent, but insisted it was a "joke".

Avola went on trial on charges of sexual assault, with prosecutors seeking a three-year jail term if he was convicted. The judge however ruled that the grope lasted “between five and 10 seconds” and was therefore too fleeting to be considered a crime.

The ruling said that while the teenager’s account was credible, the “modalities” of the gesture left “margins of doubt” on the “voluntary nature of the violation of the girl’s sexual freedom considering the very nature of touching the buttocks, for a certainly minimal time, given that the whole action is concentrated in a handful of seconds.”

The judge added;

“Furthermore, it seems likely that the brushing of the buttocks was caused by an awkward manoeuvre of the defendant which, due to the dynamics of the action, was carried out while the subject was in motion.”

Following the court judgement, Italians expressed their outrage on social media by posting videos of themselves touching intimate body parts alongside the hashtags “palpata breve” (brief grope) and “10 secondi” (10 seconds).

The trend was started by the White Lotus actor Paolo Camilli and picked up by Italy’s most prominent influencer, Chiara Ferragni. Another influencer, Francesco Cicconetti, wrote on TikTok: “Who decides that 10 seconds is not a long time? Who times the seconds while you’re being harassed?”

https://euroweeklynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/shutterstock_1228882645-1024x576.jpg
Italian judges have been criticised in the past for similar rulings. In 2017, a judge in Ancona cleared two men of rape partly because he said the victim looked too masculine to be a target of attraction.

PoliticsEmefiele Case Will Test Tinubu’s Respect For Law – Lawyer by saintbillion(op): 7:18am On Jul 14, 2023
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Joseph Daudu, says the case of the suspended and detained Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, will serve as test of President Bola Tinubu’s respect for the rule of law.

Daudu, who is counsel for Emefiele, stated this on Thursday, shortly after the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja gave the Department of State Services a seven-day ultimatum to either release Emefiele, who has been in detention since June 10, or arraign him in court if they have a case against him.

Justice Hamza Muazu gave the order while ruling on a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Emefiele, through Daudu, to challenge his arrest and continued detention by the DSS.

Justice Muazu held that though the DSS has constitutional power to arrest, detain and prevent internal crime, the power must be exercised within the ambit of the law.

Consequently, the judge held that the continued detention of Emefiele by the secret police without trial amounted to a gross violation of his fundamental human rights.

“Detention, no matter how small, can amount to a breach of fundamental rights,” the judge said.

He said since the allegations against Emefiele were bailable offences, the DSS ought to have granted him administrative bail, pending his prosecution.

However, the court dismissed Daudu’s argument that Emefiele’s detention was illegal, noting that the detention was backed by a lawful order of a magistrate’s court.

The judge said there was evidence before the court that there was an order from an Abuja Chief Magistrates’ Court that granting permission to the DSS to detain Emefiele for 14 days to enable it to conclude its investigations.

Justice Muazu said, “Though I am in sympathy with the applicant, my sentiment will not go far to deliver judgment by granting all the reliefs sought by the applicant.

“The applicant has not shown that his arrest, detention and investigation were unlawful.

“However, I am concerned that the application is not without merit. The applicant is entitled to a fair hearing.

“At this point, the continued detention of the applicant cannot be justified in the absence of any charge against him.

“At the very least, justice demands that the applicant should be released on administrative bail.

“Consequently, I hereby make an order, directing the respondents to, within one week, charge the applicant to court or release him on administrative bail,” the judge held.

Addressing journalists after the proceedings, Emefiele’s lawyer lauded the court for its courageous pronouncement.

He added that he expected the DSS to obey the order, calling on the President to demonstrate to Nigerians that under his watch, government agencies would not be disobedient to lawful court orders.

Daudu said, “Seven days has been given to the DSS to either charge him (Emefiele) to court or release him on administrative bail.

“We expect him to be released on administrative bail today (Thursday) as we speak in obedience to the court order.

“I don’t think that the President would like to start his administration with organisations under him disobeying court orders.

“He was at the forefront to chastise the military government for disobeying court orders. Now, power is in his hands, we will see if he will obey court orders.”

Meanwhile, the DSS has said the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, had been charged to court.

Reacting in a statement by its spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, the DSS said it had in 2022 applied for a court order to detain Emefiele but he got another order stopping the DSS from arresting him.

Afunanya explained that the suspended CBN governor was arrested for “criminal infractions” for which he was being prosecuted for.

The statement read, “The Department of State Services hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele has been charged to court in compliance with the Order.

“The public may recall that the Service had, in 2022, applied for a Court Order to detain him in respect of a criminal investigation. Though he obtained a restraining order from an FCT High Court, the Service, however, arrested him in June 2023. This was on the strength of suspected fresh criminal infractions/information, one of which forms the basis for his current prosecution.”

“The Service assures the public of professionalism, justice, and fairness in handling this matter and indeed the discharge of its duties within the confines of the law. “
