#StatiSense (Global Petrol Prices) Hahaha I swear this country is cruise, many people are ignorant as such the government are taking advantage of their ignorance. Which one is naira equivalent of price of petrol in other countries, why not tell us the price in their own currency. Imagine the price of fuel in Ghana is 50 cede and you tell me that it is 2000 naira equivalent. When making this, you look at the purchasing power parity of the currency against the other currency. If fuel is 50 cede in Ghana, and when 50 cede is changed to naira, it become 2000 naira, fuel is cheaper in Ghana than in Nigeria because they are different economy with different PPP. You don't compare price of goods in other country with equivalent of your currency with there own. |

The MPR is a tool, CBN use to give loan to lending institutions who give loan to investors, if CBN increase her loan rate, those lending institutions will increase the rate at which they give loan to thoae investors. |

Acidosis: I sincerely hope that you're not a graduate. That's the only way I can rationalize and justify this post.
"You have been dealing with data on GDP since your diploma days" but you don't know the contributions of each sector to your GDP? You don't know the difference between SMEs and MSMEs? You don't know the contribution of MSMEs to the employment rate? But you'll rather scream Dangote, bla bla? How many people in your generation work with Dangote? How often does Dangote consult you for a loan??
Don't worry, whenever I have to discuss "copy and paste" final year project works like you did in your diploma days, I'll tag you.
My line of thought differs from whatever you have posted here. I apologize for the initial mention. It's such a waste of time and intellectual property.
But I'll try to help you for the last time.
Nigeria has 21 commercial banks The UK has 375 commercial banks
Nigeria has 916 microfinance banks The UK has 60 CDFI (aka microfinance banks)
Nigeria has 300,000 cooperative societies The UK has 7,000 cooperative societies.
Now if you were a 4-year-old toddler, would you apply the same policy measures taken in the UK in Nigeria just because these policies worked in the UK? Answer like a 4-year-old. That's enough. I gave you a good analysis of how an economy work, but as usual, you are beating round the bush with data probably from worldbank. I will continue stating more facts just as I have done in the last post. Go back and check the contribution to GDP in the last two years, only trading came second to manufacturing sector in GDP contribution. You have refused to answer any of my questions, but rather you continue beating around the bush. Tell me the co operatives that can give loan to the MSMEs you are talking about, what do you think grows a nation economy? How many businesses in MSMEs produces most of the FMCG in Nigeria, you think it the local bread producers that grow the economy? For your information, most businesses in SMEs depend on big manufacturers for raw materials for their products. I know people who no nothing about the economy when I see one, always bringing forth data they saw online without a critical analysis if these data can be compared to developing economies like ours. There is really no need arguing about the economy with you, because I so much believe that you know nothing about economics aside going online to download data as a point of argument. For your information, I carried out my thesis all by my self, with the help of a professor, and can defend that anywhere in the world. One last thing, I will tell you this as a trained economist, you do not compare different economies in order to getvyour economy working, so keep comparing Nigeria to UK shows that you know nothing about what you are saying. Go to your state, probably ask the businesses over there to shun banks and collect loans from co operatives. Akara selling economist. |

Acidosis: That zobo production business and the likes (i.e.,MSMEs) contribute over 48% of your country's GDP, and over 90% of the total employment in Nigeria. The highest in the universe or let me say the planet earth. Meaning that, if these MSMEs shut down today, you and everyone in your state will most likely be jobless forever.
I understand that many of you don't like data, but I'll try to answer your questions again.
30 million Nigerians belong to at least one cooperative society.
Cooperative societies in Nigeria are over 300,000 as opposed to just 7k in the UK. Your parents most likely used loans gotten from one cooperative society to build their first home, get their first car. They probably got cooperative loan at some point to pay your school fees, but no, you want to build your economy around bank datasets because you're in the UK, where people build/buy homes via mortgage?
Cooperatives in Nigeria contribute 1.2 trillion yearly to your GDP.
But you want to work with something you read from a book written by a UK based professor? Probably someone that has never withdrawn money from a POS vendor? Ahaha 😄
When your leaders are ready, they'll consult the right people.
Make I rest. You didn't answer my question, how much did Dangote collect from co operative to build his refinery. How many graduates is your zobo company employing annually and how much are they paid. Don't Don't come here and paste data doe me, I have been dealing with data on GDP from my diploma days to the university. Hope it is the poor Nigerians who cannot afford 50 naira pure water that will save money in the so called co operatives. Do you even know that more than 65 % of Nigerians spend their income on food alone? Start from taking data of your area first and generalize it to the whole country, before you bring out some fake data you probably don't know anything about. Try know the person you are sharing them with. What do you think SMEs are, some akara women business? Those small factory in your locality that worth more than 50 million are also categorized as SMEs, name a co operative that can give them 50 million loan. Do you even know that most of these co operatives are not being checked by CBN and thereby charge huge amount of interest as against the reason they were established? What do you think GDP is, increase in GDP of a NY economies is being attributed to production by big manufactures, you don't even know that these big manufacturers produce raw materials for most small businesses, check the sectoral GDP contribution in Nigeria for the past 2 years. You think economics is by shouting data which you do not understand? Who do you think make up the economy of Lagos, akara sellers? Remove producers from the economy and juicy agency like custom, FIRS, Shippers council and our seaport which being revenue to the economy aside crude oil will be an August meeting centre. |

Acidosis: There are over 300,000 cooperative societies in Nigeria (around the largest in the world). The UK has only 7,000.
These institutions have more than 30 million members in Nigeria.
SMEs contribute 48% to Nigeria's GDP.
Over 70% of business owners in Nigeria would rather depend on loans from cooperative societies than bank loan. These are the people controlling credits in Nigeria.
The above are fundamental datasets that are peculiar to the Nigerian economy. We need people to hack our peculiarities. Enough of using economic jargons from the West. Our lives and economic decisions shouldn't be solely based around the banking sector. How many cooperatives does Dangote and BUA belong to, or why didn't Dangote approach one co operative to collect loan for his refinery. When economic decisions are made, we criticize without being bias. How many Nigerians are in the so called co operative, and how much loan can they give out? You think we are talking about loan to start a zobo production unit or sell akara here? |

Interest rate cannot be lower than inflation. Imagine pension funds investing at 18% yield while inflation is over 30%. It erodes the real value of the savings of pensioners. It has nothing to do with the rate of inflation, there are inflation which are over 60 percent. Victory662: Somebody should explain this to me oo. I'm a lay man on this particular issue. How will this help our depreciating naira? The policy is not for naira appreciation but to fight inflation. The MPR is the rate at which CBN borrows money to commercial banks, and it will affect the way and rate banks will lend money to investors, now, technically it mean that interest on loan for businesses will be high and will discourage investors from borrowing, off course we all know what will happen, production will reduce and inflation continue. |

Bevista: Fairly bold move by CBN. --- The interest rate was too low compared to inflation resulting in a negative yield on bonds. Government cannot be borrowing at such a low rate while causing huge inflation on the masses. It encourages financial rascality. --- The negative yield was partly why many investors preferred to preserve their funds in USD resulting in the significant depreciation of the naira. --- Let's hope the fiscal side (Wale Edun & Co) begin to act responsibly. There is nothing to applaud about this policy, I honestly hate to criticize this people, but, the this particular policy has so many negative effects and when making an economic policy, care must be taken about it negative effects. The banks will increase it rates for borrowing, and many investors cannot approach banks for loans. I know CBN is trying to reduce money in circulation, but when this affects production, we are adding more bigger problems to the economy. |

OreMI22: Let's face the truth: the economic challenges facing Tinubu during his 8 months in office stem from the economic mismanagement perpetrated by Buhari and his Ministers. In 8 years, Buhari oversaw the printing of N30 trillion Naira, depleted our foreign reserves from 52 billion dollars, and allowed the looting of the NNPC, all while claiming to be the "Petroleum Minister." Ministers like Hadi Sirika and Abubakar Malami looted billions from the state treasury. Shockingly, none of the Hausa/Fulani leaders and clerics, who now criticize Tinubu, raised concerns about Buhari's economic mismanagement!
Today, these same northern leaders, who remained silent during Buhari's tenure, are quick to call for protests or military intervention against Tinubu, who has been in office for less than a year!
Any Yoruba person who falls for this deception and participates in protests to destabilize Tinubu's government fails to honor the legacy of Oduduwa. Northern leaders should show Tinubu the same patience they showed their northern brother, Buhari. So it was Buhari that removed subsidy, itvwaz also Buhari that floated the naira? Politics › Re: My Discussion With A Professor In Finance by Saintinoo(m): 7:15pm On Feb 25, 2024 |
enemyofprogress: I engaged one of our professors in finance, and below was his honest analysis of the present economy situation
"As I see it,...the present situation was decades in the making and is due to a whole range of issues, some of which you have identified.
1. Demand (legitimate and speculative) for dollar far exceeds supply (earnings from oil and other exports, FDI, FPI, grants, etc). The greater this gap, the greater the price of the commodity relative to the Naira.
2. Rather than tackle the underlying supply problem, which has been in place for decades, and became a major issue in 1973/74 / 78 /83, through the diversification of the economy, import substitution, and other ways of lowering import dependence and hence dollar requirement, the government (corruptly, because successive governments and their agencies knew where this would lead us), continued to ignore the problem. Rather, they put in place multiple exchange rate regimes, foreign exchange controls, and import licencimg regimes to control the demand side while continuing to ignore the supply side. All these efforts were doomed to fail because not only were they fundamentally flawed, but they were fraught with corruption.
3. As import and dollar demand continued to outstrip supply at an aggressive pace, another poor policy choice was to manage demand by rationing the declining supply while still ignoring the worsening supply situation. Multiple exchange rate regimes were introduced for government allocation, private sector allocation, and artificial settings of rates. Dollar was being subsidised for one sector of the economy at the expense of others. The result of this was aggressive arbitrage and so-called round-tripping. Buying at official rates and selling at the unofficial markets. This was essentially a licence for speculators to speculate with the Naira and for cheap money to be made with the active conievance of corrupt elements in the CBN, FGN, and Banks, across all successive regimes.
4. In times of earnings boom, no effort was made to build sustained external reserves. Rather, profligate spending and embezzlement was the order of the day, with no investment in the economy that would support sustained economic growth, diversification, increased capacity to earn dollars, and limit import dependence. Every successive government did this, with each successive government being worse than the last. (Some will argue that the obasanjo 1999 - 2007 was a slight improvement, but...)
5. The gradual and systematic devaluation of the Naira from about N0.6 / $1 in 1983 to N750/ $1 in mid 2023 (40 years) was a consistent and glaring evidence of this deepening crisis. But by this time, the extremely corrupt cabals that were making easy money at the expense of the system were too deeply entrenched and impossible to dislodge. Not that anyone was trying to anyway. Every successive government was essentially in the game to game the system. Bear in mind that while all this was going on, the meagre earning capacity from oil was also declining due to the actions of oil theft, sabotage, etc. Nigeria was being decimated from all sides. Politicians were feathering their nests , same as civil Servants, while the fundamentals of the economy was in decay, power, road, education, health, security, etc.
6. In the face of declining revenues and massive diversion of the meagre revenues due to corruption and leakages, successive governments have resorted to borrowings to fund the growing government deficits. And most of these dollar denominated loans, are used to fund growing recurrent expenditures which are essentially pipelines into corrupt pockets, leaving very little for capital projects that can improve the fundamental income generating capacity of the economy.
7. To create the impression of normalcy, different services were being subsidised, eg, petroleum products, power, etc, with arrangements that were also corruptly enriching a few at the expense of many.
8. We will become comfortable with N2750 -N3000 /$1, and we will again allow the illusion of normalcy to blind us to the problems we are facing down the road. In a few years, we will again face this existential crisis..we, we saw it in the 70s , 80s, 90s , and 20s up to this point.
All has never been well with Nigeria.
So, we are exactly where we are supposed to be. At some point, something has to give. Now is just a day of reckoning.
Would another government have done any better. I doubt it. The best would have been to kick the can further down the road.
What is the solution?
No quick fix or silver bullet. The solution is clear to everyone from the analysis. Improve supply, reduce demand, stop leakage, and improve the fundamentals. It is not rocket science. But it has to be a consistent long-term effort and an extremely painful journey for decades to come. We are at the periphery of the periphery of that journey. Unfortunately, we are not all on the same page as a nation. Entrenched corrupt interests, real and perceived grievances, disenfranchisement, marginalisation, and displacement of different groups. And a class of leaders who cannot lead by example.
I am not convinced anyone can fix this with the current sociopolitical structure of Nigeria.
I hate to sound pessimistic, but I am a realist. We have been thriving on the illusion of the progress of a few at the expense of the masses. At some point, that disequilibrium will selfcorrect, explosively. it is almost inevitable.
I may be wrong, and I hope I am. But I am not in doubt." I am surprised that many Nigerians don't know this. Well, maybe because many are not good with macroeconomics. I have since started looking doe ways the downward economy will favour me and when I must have become tired, I will Japa. It is just starting, Nigerians should brace up for the worst. |

Lanrelagboi: STRONG ASSURANCE FROM THIS GOVERNMENT
Just yesterday, I have been at Abuja on the invitation of the President and some members of his team. It was resolved that ;
- with hope and strong resolve by the government and the people things will surely change *if only our people will be a bit patient with the government* - the CBN Governor Mr Yemi Cardoso declared that with all that have been put into place dollar will surely crash naturally if only the black marketers are put in check.
WHAT WE HAVE DONE IN OGUN STATE
We are not only Gateway state by mouth, we have the best intelligent, resourceful and articulate brains in the country , therefore as your duely elected Governor we met with some stakeholders and came out with these just last week:
- All students in higher institutions across the country who are from Ogun State will be given fifty thousand naira each to cushion the effect of their increased tution fee
- all the primary and secondary school students in the state will be given ten thousand naira each
- all our primary and secondary school students will enjoy at least five exercise books
- all our elderly men and women to enjoy FREE HEALTH CARE from all our health institutions across the state
- all pregnant women to enjoy free health care and to be given five thousand naira after delivery
- having realized that the past governments and this present administration are owing Ogun State workers over #6billion of unpaid deductions we have therefore resolved that starting from this month of February, we shall be paying #500million to offset this deduction owed our civil servants
- our government have been paying ten thousand naira to cushion the effect of transportation cost of our civil servants in the last 8 months, this government will continue with this - From tomorrow Thursday, 100 trailer loads of rice will arrive the state some of which will be given freely to the aged while the rest will be sold at a controlled price of how much a bag of rice was been sold before the soaring prices of food item started
- we are launching electric okada and tricycles to reduce transport fare by 30-40%
MY PLEA TO YOU AS MY PEOPLE
Let us be tolerant and patient with this government. Let us not join any group of those who are hellbent at destroying this administration. We can't pretend as a government that all is well, we are aware of the hardship but we should not be an agent of sabotage to thwart and tarnish this administration's image and effort .
Ayannuga Olufemi ASUSS PRESS CREW & OGUN TUC Media When we talk, they say why are we complaining more than the APC supporters, but ask yourself. With all the measures by both federal and state government on cautioning the hardship. 1. Are we at a sort of war? 2. Is there natural disaster all over the country. 3. Is there an outbreak of disease that made Nigeria go under lockdown? Why all this palliative here and there, why the hunger, why the extreme poverty all of a sudden. When APC supporters can really answer this, then they will see the magnitude of mistake they made in 2023 and demand accountability from the people they voted for. |

newscraft2023: STOP FANNING EMBERS OF ETHNIC WAR OVER THE ECONOMIC SITUATION IN NIGERIA! -Fadojoe (Appeals To Igbo Youths).
The leader of Rescue Movement For New Nigeria aka Rescue The Vulnerable Initiative, Comrade Faduri Oluwadare Joseph popularly called Fadojoe has called on youths from South/East of Nigeria to desist from turning the present economic downturn in Nigeria to an opportunity to take on the entire Yoruba people, thereby fanning embers of ethnic war!
In a video broadcast through his official YouTube channel, the former presidential aspirant under Labour Party, Fadojoe said, that at "this jet age, it's so sad that we still have generation of some young Nigerians that will still continue to fan embers of tribal war in reaction to the devastating state of our country, turning it to Yoruba vs Igbo media battle.
"No doubt the economy is so hash, no doubt the country is crashing more and more and no doubt we are all talking about it. But the fact still remains that we've not been having the best of governance since many years back and the economy of the country keeps nosediving deeper and deeper".
Stressing further that precisely this 2024 the hardship in our country affects the West, South, North as well as the East. Skyrocketing cost of food and everything is nationwide, and it knows no ethnic group. "So if our country fail woefully, we all fail as a nation: it's not just the Yoruba people or the Hausa people that fail. And if our government succeed we all succeed as a nation and we will all have a country that we can be proud of and that in future our children can be bold to call their nation.
"Therefore, what we should all focus on should be how to rescue our country from the 'sit-tight old generation syndrome' that will use ethnicity, religion, money etc as divide and rule strategy among the youths, so as to keep holding the nation in salary while destroying the future of the same youths they are using 'divide-and-rule' scheme to keep ruling over them.
"In the light of this, it's very important to correct some of our brothers from the South/East that come online to blame the present state of Nigeria only on the Yoruba people. I leave in the United States of America, it will be very wrong of me to blame the problems in America on just the white people. Because if I do that, it's called racism. I will be seen as a racist.
"On this note I want to appeal to our leaders of South/East extraction to please caution our Igbo brothers that come online to rubbish Yoruba people about the state of our nation. Let us make our criticism constructive and not based on ethnicity.
"I am a Yoruba man and I have criticized this administration more than many people and even more than all the opposition political parties put together. But I ensure my criticism is constructive, with the focus on how to make our dear nation better.
"And the fact remains that there are many of us as Yoruba people that worked assiduously for Peter Obi and millions of Yorubas voted for him (Obi). Also there are many Igbos too that worked for and voted Tinubu. Hence, when you now rubbish an entire race because of the failure of one Yoruba man, then you are also rubbishing those of us who worked for and voted Peter Obi. When many of us lost friends and even some business partners, because of our support for Peter Obi and we didn't care about that as far as we justify our conscience through our support for Obi.
The activist thus noted that there is no where in the world where only one tribe can win any presidential election without the help of another tribe, likewise there is no way an Igbo man can win a presidential election without support from other tribes. "Therefore those instigating our brothers from South/East to turn the failure of Nigeria to ethnic war are setting them up against winning future presidential election.
"Let's talk about what is wrong in our country without being tribalistic about it. Because tribalism will continue to divide us the more and do us no good.
"In as much as president Tinubu is not getting it right, we also need to understand that part of the major problems of Nigeria is corruption and we have many corrupt people from the West, South, North and East; both in this administration and previous ones, that also contributed in digging the gulf that the country is sinking into.
"The like of Dr Betta C. Edu, former Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management was alleged to have stolen billions within 8 months. Former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele that is still answering to the charges against him. Diezani Alison-Madueke also alleged to have embezzled billions. The oil bunkers in Niger Delta and others that contributed negatively one way or another to the present situation of Nigeria, are they just only Yoruba people or are we not all the Nigerians?
"Prices of tomato and other locally produced food stuff that are going higher, is it the rising dollars that is also responsible? We have people from different tribes and ethnic groups as bank MDs of different banks in Nigeria. And you go to bank to get cash, you can't get your own money, but in front of the bank and beside the bank, you can get any amount of money from the POS operators. Also you want to get dollar from bank they will tell you it's not available, yet you can get as much as you need from Bureau De Change. Bua Cement and Dangote cement that they get the raw materials from Nigeria yet the prices are now above what an average Nigerian can afford. Are these perpetrators all of Yoruba extraction?"
"In conclusion, let's face the problems of the country as Nigerians struggling to liberate our dear nation from the old generation, comprising bad leaders from different parts of Nigeria: and not as Igbo Vs Yoruba ethnic war as they are now such evil discord among the youths that supposed to know better and rise to rescue Nigeria united as one people " Hahaha they have started, anything to rope the Igbo's into their madness, well, we are busy in our 2 by 2 shops and do not have time for your protests. Right now, I am about to order for goods, don't, don't have time for Nigeria protests. |

I can tell you for free that their shady businesses have been drastically affected by this forex problem. People can't even buy from them anymore. Unaffordable. No Sir, the Igbo's posting on social media do that to mock Yoruba and Hausa, I am a good critic of the government, I eat more than 3 times a day, and so do most Igbo's in SE. Mind you, I am into the food business, and right now a bag of beans is 120k in Onitsha and it seems like people are buying it more. |
