PoliticsRe: No Third World Country Can Float It Currency With US Dollars And Survive. by Saintinoo(m): 7:35pm On Feb 18, 2024
Bullfallo:
No 3rd world country or developing country can float it currency with pounds, euro and USD and survive it.

Not even the Russia rubbles or any asian country for that matter.

The USD is the world favorite currency it has a value and appreciate even if they don’t export anything from the US.

When he was making noise about floating the naira, i heavily criticized the decision but some APC supporters who know nothing about economics defended him.

You can't float a currency against the dollar when you run a mono economy. It is very simple, your currency will fight with the dollar at the international market, and will only gain value if you do not seek much of dollar, imagine using dollar to import fuel, which almost every sector of the economy use, that indicates that more dollar will be sort, nor to talk of other household items we buy with dollar.

Tinubu is paying subsidy bigger than previous administration even when Nigerians are buying the same fuel 4 times the previous price.

Yes. That's the beauty of democratic choices. He has till 2027 then I will switch to Atiku if he fails.
You see, that is the problem, you believe that these old criminals are the only people who should govern the country.

Why not another young intelligent Northerner with the heart to work for the people, why not a call for constitution review and review of Nigeria corrupt structure which have kept the entire country underdeveloped and poor. Why most it be those crooks.

Yes, Lagos consume more electricity than any other state in Nigeria, consumption is more important than availability in terms of industry, if you are talking about startup yes there more opportunities in less developed areas. Just moribund infrastructures like Ajeokuta steel
Take the seaport out of Lagos, our rather, let other states have seaports and you will see how manufacturing companies will troop out of Lagos.

Data has it that must multinationals in FCMG are abandoning Lagos for Kano, because of the ease of doing business in Kano compared to Lagos.

That stats is flawed if business don’t lie, if they have such infrastructure with no other set back investors will be grouping there, you want to tell me landlocked states lacking cargo facilities is more developed than let’s say Lagos. Unless the meaning of infrastructure is changing. All the infrastructure in those states isn’t even equal to port infrastructure in Lagos alone
Do you even read at all?

In my post, I made mention of Lagos, if not for the port in Lagos where raw materials come in most box these companies will prefer going to these States to so business, and I highlighted the reasons in my comment.

Do you think Lagos has more electricity than Bauchi or Kebbi? Don't you know that producers first choice of infrastructure is electricity?

Nairametrics' stats was about food inflation, not the cost of living. The title of this thread is wrong. That is where the problem comes from.
I have noticed you just want to bring unnecessary argument, and seems you don't read, seen it in your other replies. I hope the below report is wrong headlines too.

The report further contains the top 10 most expensive states in Nigeria in January 2024. This crucial data provides a clearer picture of the economic distress experienced by Nigerians in various states, highlighting the urgency of addressing these inflationary pressures. Below is the list of the 10 most expensive states in Nigeria in January 2024:

I think i believe in this data, only businessmen will understand this, it is less expensive to produce in Bauchi than in Ogun or Lagos save for the cost of transporting raw material from Lagos to Bauchi.

Power supply
Less tax
Cheap labour
Less internal transport cost.

These and more you will enjoy while producing in a state like Bauchi as compared to Lagos.

Bauchi is cheap because there are no good jobs that offer career progression for young graduates. That is the reality. Should Bauchi become like Ogun, it would become expensive as many people will troop into the state.
So is Bauchi cheap, and nairamatrics carriers of fake statistics? That is my argument here, I don't care about what job is in where and how people troop in.

Nairamatrics should go and sleep, not just sit in Lagos and assume data. Bauchi state is one of the cheapest state in Nigeria.

Pure water is still sold for #10 in Bauchi, yes you heard that well, a room and parlour is around 80-120k in Bauchi. A bottle of coca cola is 170 in Bauchi. Bauchi should be in the top 3 most cheapest state to live in.

Well, I am not shocked about the video, the NSA Nuhu is on a mission to calm the tension in the North and use their imams to calm down the impending protest, it was all staged by the NSA himself.

Good thing is that the economy will keep getting worst until people start falling dead on the street.

You can't remove petrol subsidy and devaluation Niara at the same time. That is a bad move.

Let's assume subsidy was remove and naira wasn't devaluated.....Will the situation be as worse as this?

Over to you economist....want to hear your thoughts on this? undecided
The situation wouldn't have been as worst as this because, dollar which is used to buy Pedro would not be too expensive, by implication, price of petrol will not increase this much.

When the naira was fixed, it was projected that at the removal of subsidy, petrol would sell at #350, now it is #700 because of dollar.

The floating of the naira was done to stop these bankers and other criminals from their shady businesses.

See, the floating of naira and subsidy removal is something that should have been done loooong time ago.

We all know that any government that summon the courage to implement the policy will take many blames.

Unfortunately, balablu did it albeit in a wrong way.
Pls, the floating of the naira was not done to fight corruption in the fx market, the same government that floated the currency market are also corrupt. Tinubu floated the naira in order to get more crude oil sells and yes, to relieve government of the burden of fixing and being responsible of providing dollar at all time, it had nothing to do with corruption fight, the government you are talking about is even more corrupt than these bankers.

Black man. You'll always find a way to circumvent the fact because of your instability and unwillingness to face the truth. Even if they give you trillions of dollars, you'd still accomplish nothing. Is it not the same country where multinationals are closing shop or another? There is no place on earth where industrialization took place without a political will. Whether Japan or Singapore, China or Hong Malaysia, a country without sound leaders and incapable of creating basic drivers like regular electricity and security will keep moving in circles. Let's not even talk about corruption in high places. Until Nigerians understand that the country is just a cash cow where ethnicities bicker for their share of the cake, no progress will be made. You've already wasted more than half a century doing the same thing without making progress and still don't understand. Until you guys sit down and understand that as presently constituted, this is a country of strange bed fellow with different purpose. Ask yourself why you cannot undo what the colonialists did if it hasn't favored you for nearly a century. If bankers have been diverting funds, why have you not been able to check them if not political incompetence and dysfunctional system? The fact remains that outflows move through the orifices of least resistance and Nigeria's problem is mostly political leadership. The day that is fixed, the lines would naturally fall unto pleasant places. Until then, alooters continua.
You are making same point he just made, seems you just choose to criticize his post. Those government officials that give dollar to these banks, who do they work for.

It is not a hidden fact that CBN sells dollar to wealthy Nigerians who run black market. I remember in 2016, Aisha Buhari together with Isa Funtua were among the people Emiefele sold dollar to.

Stop defending these men, they are the reason Nigeria is poor.

The truth is that many people underestimated economics and think any dick tom or harry can be appointed to handle an agency or office related to the economy. People think economics is just dd and ss, but it is far more than that.

OP back to your question, their are many reasons why a government will float it currency, economists call floating of the currency a MARKET exchange regime. Though a good exchange regime but should not be used in a MONO ECONOMY like Nigeria. Now, the only reason Tinubu government floated the currency is to make crude oil cheap, crude oil is our only source of fx and by implication the only source of revenue, the government needs money, so it had to make crude oil cheap, remember, we have competitors in the oil market.

I think Buhari did almost same with the currency market when our crude oil has no buyers sometimes around 2020.

The elections were already rigged in APC stronghold even before results were announced, so it was not about the results announced by INEC, most of those results were already written inside APC situation rooms at the state level, which was why even you OP had results of the election before it was announced.

I remember a time I told you about a result from Sokoto which had Atiku leading by a margin but you got scared and had to give me the APC written figures, that mean, results were already written.

Well, election they say have consequences, I hope you are adopting well to this one.

The monthly allocations accrued to the states has seen a big increase since the removal of fuel subsidy. January 2024, FAAC shared 1.13trillion. In December 2023, 1.13trillion was shared, in November 2023, 1.78trillion shared. In August 2023, 1.13trillion was shared. These respective allocations were a big boost from 786billion that was shared on May 2023 at the tenure end of the last Administration. The President had a talk with the Governors over the subsidy removal and promised increased allocations to enable them cushion the effects and help them deliver to their people. So far, Governors haven't shown commiserable deliverables to the increase in allocation at their disposals. It appears to be that the Governors are less interested in driving the vision of the president than lining their pockets while their people groan and complain under their watch. The media are not putting the pressure on the Governors, everyone's eyes are fixed on the President.
Ask your president, States are being given between 3.5bn to 5bn monthly as allocation, junk of those fund goes to payment of unproductive civil servants.

Ask you president why the country macroeconomic indices aee not working. Ask your president why;
1. Exchange rate is bad
2. Inflation is high
3. Unemployment is high
4. There is price instability
5. Too much insecurity

Ask you president and leave those governors for now.
