Samsung is the people's favorite for 2017
The year 2017 has been exciting in the smartphone world. There has been a lot of flagship releases and the contest has been hot. In order to find out which smartphone brand do people actually love the most I created a Poll. Users from all over the world have voted and have decided on their favorite smartphone brand for the year.

Samsung is the people's favorite for this year, this is not much of a surprise because their flagship smartphones Galaxy S8 and Note 8 have been regarded by most as the best smartphone of the year. Samsung led the table with a whopping 29% of the votes. Samsung's major competitor Apple had only 14% of the votes which is quite surprising. Apple is currently the world most valuable brand and their flagship smartphone (the iPhone X) is an amazing device which received good rating only been defeated by the Galaxy S8.

The Hong-Kong Based smartphone manufacturer Infinix came second with 20% of the votes. Infinix is a very popular brand in this part of the globe. One peculair reason Infinix is loved is because of the prices of their devices, their devices are also durable and have strong batteries. Infinix has become a loved brand and has definitely come to stay.

Tecno-mobile, established in 2006 came third with 17% of the votes. Tecno is a direct competitor to Infinix and also a very popular brand in Africa.Their recent Flagship Tecno Phantom 8 has recieved high ratings and is well loved by the people.

The Tech Giant Google had 6%. Google smartphones have come a long way from the Nexus series now to the Pixel series. Their flagship Pixel XL 2 is one of the best smartphones released this year.

Nokia, Huawei/Honor and LG had 3% each. Nokia used to be very popular here years ago int the times of the 3310. Although they seem to be putting a come back with impressive releases like the Nokia 8 and others. There has been a lot of debates on whether Nokia can still become a top brand like it used to be back in the days. I can't say anything on that but they don't seem to be giving up, who knows what can happen.

Other brands consisting of iTel, Gionee, Xiaomi etc had 6% of the votes and Sony alongside Lenovo/Motorola had 0%. Although I am surprised at Sony not managing to accumulate any significant percentage because the Sony Xperia XZ Premium is a very good device and there are high expectations for the upcoming Sony XPeria XZ2 which is going to be released at the MCW 2018 which is just around the corner. The XPeria XZ2 is to come with a bezel-less design which is the 'thing' now.

In conclusion I congratulate Samsung on being the People's Favorite for the year 2017 and I am eagerly anticipating the upcoming Galaxy S9 which is codenamed "Crown".

The reports from Keeper also states that four of top 10 passwords on the list consists of six characters or shorter, passwords like ‘12345678’, ‘111111’, ‘1234567890’, ‘1234567’, ‘password’, ‘123123’, ‘987654321’ are among the top ten list.A study by multiple web hosts revealed that most passwords were extremely week. We all know very well that the United States government has already banned the use of Kaspersky software in federal agencies. The justification was that the company would be working with the Russian government to do espionage. Kaspersky has now filed a lawsuit to try to reverse the ruling.

Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab maintains almost 400 million users worldwide. You will be shocked to know that the Trump administration on Tuesday dismissed Kaspersky firm from two lists of approved vendors chosen by government agencies to obtain technology equipment.

The General Services Administration had validated that Kaspersky is no longer an approved software vendor. This means that federal agencies and state departments are not permitted to purchase software products from Kaspersky.
Here’s what General Services Administration said:

“GSA’s priorities are to ensure the integrity and security of US government systems and networks and evaluate products and services available on our contracts using supply chain risk management processes”

Well, this is not the first time Kaspersky had raised concerns regarding the collaboration with Russia. Recently, reports from US-based Media, including Bloomberg News suggest that the security firm had powerful ties than initially thought with Russian intelligence agency FSB.

On the other hand, the security firm, Kaspersky have denied all the allegations, it had explained on its website that the company doesn’t have any ‘inappropriate’ ties with any government. Kaspersky also added that the company only operates with agencies to fight cybercrime.

The United States government has already banned the use of Kaspersky software in federal agencies. The justification was that the company would be working with the Russian government to do espionage. Kaspersky has now filed a lawsuit to try to reverse the ruling.

Kaspersky denies any connection to the suspicion that hackers linked to the Russian government would have taken advantage of a breach in a company’s antivirus to spy on an NSA employee and capture sensitive data. The company alleges that the leak occurred because the employee used pirated software, and has opened a program to allow governments to revise the software source code.
Here’s what Kaspersky firm said:

“Kaspersky Lab is very public about the fact that it assists law enforcement agencies around the world with fighting cyber threats, including those in Russia, by providing cyber security expertise on malware and cyberattacks.”

“When assisting in official Russian cybercrime investigations, in accordance with Russian law, we only provide technical expertise throughout the investigation to help them catch cybercriminals. Concerning raids and physically catching cybercriminals, Kaspersky Lab might ride along to examine any digital evidence found, but that is the extent of our participation, as we do not track hackers’ locations. Kaspersky Lab doesn’t provide any government agencies, nor other parties, with information on location of people and doesn’t gather ‘identifying data from customers’ computers’ because it is technically impossible.”

Kaspersky had also declined all the charges by claiming that it is being “unjustly accused without any hard evidence”.

Still, Donald Trump signed a decree banning Kaspersky software from the US government. Major public agencies have migrated to other companies’ security tools. In addition, stores like Best Buy and Staples have removed Kaspersky products from the shelves. As a result, Kaspersky closed its office in the federal capital Washington.

The Russians claim that “Kaspersky Lab did not have a fair opportunity to defend itself against the allegations and no technical evidence was given to validate the actions of the DHS (Department of Homeland Security).” In addition, the US government would have “damaged reputation and business operations without any evidence of irregularities.” Therefore, “it is in the interest of Kaspersky Lab to defend itself in this matter”.

Note that despite not responding more browsers, Opera Software continues to operate, but in other businesses. The name change, according to Boilesen, was necessary because the Chinese consortium also acquired rights over the Opera brand, which is why the agreement already provided for changes.
It is clear, therefore, that the Otello Corporation (the name is a reference to the opera of the same name) is now representing the parts not bought by the Chinese consortium. These include businesses in areas such as games, online ads and telecommunications, hence, the name change will be gradual.

Boilesen is also a strategic adviser to the Chinese consortium. Thus, it is presumed that there will still be links from Otello Corporation to Opera browsers, at least for some time.

One of them is Loapi, a variety that could destroy an Android phone if users do not eliminate it in time.

This variety of malware known as Loapi damages mobile devices and the reason is that it overheats and overloads the device’s components. This causes the battery to bulge, deform the cover and even stop working or burn other components.


The main function of this malware is to mine cryptocurrencies. As we know, it uses system resources to do this. It puts the maximum capacity of a device and this causes the damage we have discussed. It is something like if we took a car and we always took it to the maximum of revolutions. It could heat up or suffer engine failure. The same happens on a computer or, in this case, Android mobile devices.


It has been discovered by Kaspersky Labs. Researchers say that Loapi seems to have evolved from Podec, a strain of malware detected in 2015. Back then, cybercriminals used Podec to bypass Advice of Charge (AoC) and CAPTCHAs to subscribe victims to SMS services from the top rate.
Advanced malware

The new Loapi malware is much more advanced compared to the simplistic Podec variety. Kaspersky experts call it a “game for everything” because Loapi has a highly advanced modular structure and components for all kinds of unpleasant operations. For example, the new Loapi malware includes modules for:-

Install a proxy to send traffic
Inject ads in the notifications area
Show ads in other apps
Open URL in browsers
Download and install other applications
Launch DDoS attacks
Track web pages (subscribe users to payment platforms, for example)

Currently, Loapi advertises itself in third-party app stores. It pretends to be a mobile antivirus or an adult application.

The malware uses the classic trick of annoying users with an endless stream of pop-up windows until the user does what the malware wants. This is how Loapi gets the administrator rights of the device and how Loapi forces users to uninstall real antivirus applications from their phones.


Applications infected with Loapi will also close the Settings window when they detect that a user is trying to deactivate their administrator account. Users will have to start their device in safe mode to remove Loapi. The procedure to start in safe mode is different depending on the smartphone model.


While Loapi has not entered the official Google Play store, security researchers from Kaspersky and ESET discovered other strains of malware that did.


For example, Kaspersky discovered 85 applications that were infected with a Trojan that would steal VK’s login credentials. According to the statistics of download of Play Store, it seems that more than a million users have installed these applications.

For all those who wondered if Sony would enter the current trend of smartphones with all screen, the answer has come in a recent filtration of what could be the new Sony Xperia XZ2, a successor of the XZ1 with which the brand would present its first mobile with all screen and no bottom frame.


When launched by Xiaomi, the concept of Bezel-less or all screen seemed an aesthetic element to differentiate its smartphone from the rest. But when the brands with more weight in the sector, like the South Korean giant Samsung and the tech giant Apple, implemented the Infinity Display and FullView designs, it became clear that the theme of the frameless mobile is no longer a choice, but a trend that must be followed, and that brands like Huawei already assembled the feature in its mid-range.


When in August we saw the debut of the Sony Xperia XZ1, it was clear that the Japanese brand preferred to remain in its classic design, but for the successor of that model, things may have changed.

The most significant is the presence of a Snapdragon 845 that would make it clear that Sony will position this XZ2 as its high-end of 2018, but also that it could come out later than the Samsung Galaxy S9 because of the fact that Koreans have used all the Qualcomm’s first batch of processors for its flagship earlier this year. Anyway, the MWC 2018 is getting closer, sure to materialize we will see more of this new Xperia in the coming weeks.
