FamilyYou Want To Marry Her, Parents Dissent - What Do You Do? by Saipro(op):
It's something we're all familiar with and have encountered over time - either by experience or having met someone passing through the throes of it. Or seen it on TV. Whichever may be the case, what would you do if it were you? It's plaguing some of my boys and I and there seems to be no way out - no compromise, no common ground. Our spouses-to-be are tearing us to bits and our parents won't let us have peace of mind - even tried match-making (yup, old-school tactics). Not quite a cry for help - just an avenue to gather more knowledge and expand the database. Kind of like distributed thinking. Throw in all you've got - junk and all. Thanks!

Beware of living life out of context. This is Nigeria, I mean. While a childless marriage may mean nothing to some of us, we may still buckle under external pressure. I'm not kidding myself that I'd shoulder the world (as the god Atlas) in the event of a childless marriage. I'm only human. Worse yet, I'm Nigerian . . . . .

Why not - if she can stand it. However, a childles marriage in a society like ours is at best difficult. Nearly impossible to live through. Unrealistic ladies and guys might say "it's between my wife and I . . . " but in actual fact, we're all family subsets of a larger societal subset - subject to the whims over-bearing and governing majority. Anyway, you've given me an idea. I'm about to start a quite curious yet in effect (in terms of distribution) prevalent and rampant topic. I'll start the thread right after replying this one. Join me on it if you're like minded. And it's for real so no kidding around!

Ok. Nice one bigrovar. The question now is how do I get my hands on this remix?

@ Ralvy

Lagos. If he'll mail you one, I'd like one too. Though I'd like it better if you could mail me a copy of UUE 1.5
That'd be sweet.

@ Niceuzor

That wasn't so nice. I started on a Mac over 2 decades ago and migrated to DOS (IBM-DOS -> MS-DOS -> Windows for Workgroups -> Win 95, et al). Liking Vista tells me you're not a hard-core guy. I mean, it takes not ever having had fun on DOS to like ANY Windows at all, least of all Vista. You ought to know that Win 2000 is your best bet for NT-based Windows (unless you'd prefer Win 2003 server). And that Win 98 SE is the best 9x there ever was (Win ME was crap).

If YOU like Vista, that's all good. Just be wary of meddling in things you're not quite conversant with. Be nice like your name suggests.  cool

And remember, this thread is for Linux enthusiasts. Start a Vista thread if it thrills you. Don't get it the wrong way though - no beef meant . . . . wink

I'd like to burn a copy of your disc. When you're done, that is. How? Where? And how do I get this repo CD?

Got it! Feisty Fawn. Downloading 1.5 ultimate DVD will take a week. Not interested. Yet. Lemme try this one first. If I like it, I may port from Fedora. Any advice from the house?
ComputersRe: Which is Better:The Pentium or the AMD? by Saipro(m): 10:05am On Oct 06, 2007
I generally use AMDs but Intels have always ruled the market. But anyday, gimme my AMD processor (been using AMD for 7 years now), Gigabyte board, 512GB+ system RAM (>333MHz), NVidia with 256MB+ dedicated RAM - we have a party!

Asides the Duo cores & Turioins (in which Intels outperform AMDs generally speaking), the corresponding AMD have always floored equivalent Intels, time and time again. Nonetheless, Intel will continue to outsell AMD 4:1 largely because people don't know better (AMDs are cheaper, quieter and run more efficiently). Also because it doesn't matter. Asides those of us who game, you're hardly likely to even nearly push your core to the limit.

Forget FSBs, pipelines, chipset types and so many other variables. While in truth they largely impact performance, they become significant for power-users, not the run-of-the-gamut everyday folk. Get it?

And thanks to other people who's posts have gone a long way to try to clarify things. Thanks to those who muddled things up as well - we'd be out of a job if it weren't for you.

CultureRe: Why Must Nigerians Abroad Marry Nigerians? by Saipro(m): 6:21pm On Oct 05, 2007
We might have run a concurrent thread stating "Why must Nigerians be so ethnically oriented when it comes to marriage?"

It's obvious that Nigerian parents of the immediate generation ahead would keep their kids' marital pairs within their ethnic circles; much less consider a foreigner as a suitable spouse for their child.

To be a little more focused, Seun, I love your apparent family structure and I'm envious of the fact that your parents will let you marry anyone of your choice (that's if you think you know them well enough). I stick to my guns but at a price. With due respect, I'm a first born too (first of a first) and I get the shitty end of the stick. All the time. My brothers don't get it nearly as tough cos I can see it - and they comment on it too. I didn't ask to be first - nor to be branded pillar/post/supporter of the clan/family. But that's the way the cookie crumbles. My mom's raving adamant. My dad, quietly insistent. I've several times before asked "what am I to do?". But I know what to do. One way is to sever all there is and "cold boot". But that a radical fix. Milder alternatives exist. Though it may be what they're asking for if they won't let go. No girl is making me do this. It's a way to shake the tethers off. You wouldn't understand it Seun because it's a concept that can't be imagined when not experienced. It goes beyond marriages - it pervades other aspects of life. A much eclipsed fact. But that's another thread. Someday, I'll run that thread as my catharsis.

Marry for love and marry free - when you can, but weigh the cost. If it may cost too much (don't kid yourself by saying "afterall, it's between my spouse and I"wink especially if your family is deeply ethnic and runs extended roots, do a damage limit assessment. But I haven't said anything some of us don't know already. Strike out the must and simply stick with the statement "Nigerians abroad may marry Nigerians". Nothing is ever so compulsory in life. Really . . .

TV/MoviesRe: Who's Your Favourite Super Hero (and Villian) by Saipro(m): 2:06pm On Oct 05, 2007
Hard choice to pick, whether Hero or Villain. Nice try for those of you who could make up your minds.

Simply for the record have you wondered how amazing an hero-power the Green Lanterns have?
Or how awesome a villain Darkseid is?
