Former Nigeria international, Yakubu Aiyegbeni has announced his retirement from football at the age of 35.

Aiyegbeni rose to prominence with Everton, starting his football career back in 1997 with Julius Berger of Nigeria.

He also lined up for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City and a host of clubs. His last club was Coventry City.

“I would like to officially announce my retirement from professional football today, Yakubu Aiyegbeni told Sky Sports News.

“Firstly, I would like to thank God for the career I have had. I would like to thank the entire Nigerian Football Federation and my Nigerian national team-mates for all the memorable years I had playing for the Super Eagles.

“I would also like to thank all the football clubs I played for. The managers, all club staff, owners, fellow players and my dearest family and friends who immensely supported me throughout my career.

“When I started my career at Julius Berger in Nigeria all those years ago (1997) I could only have dreamt of the success that was to follow years after.

“Also playing in England especially helped me grow as a player and as a person so much that I am now settled here. I feel the time is right for me to now focus on the next chapter in my life.”

I pray for the peace of Nigeria, Pope Francis tells Speaker Dogara

His Holiness, Pope Francis, has said that he has been praying for the peace and stability of Nigeria.

The Pope made this known when he met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon  Yakubu Dogara, in Saint Peters Square, Vatican City.

The Speaker had led Nigerian delegation to the Holy See for a morning mass where nationals and leaders from different countries of the world gathered to join His Holiness for the devotion and receive blessings from the Pontiff.

Dogara who described the meeting with Pope Francis as "awesome", stated that he was pleasantly surprised  and  delighted to know that the pontiff is well informed about the happenings in Nigeria.

The moment I was introduced to him as the Speaker of the Nigerian Parliament, he said "how is Nigeria and how  are you working for the peace of Nigeria?"

"Pray for me also"

Pope Francis then told the Speaker that he always prays for the peace of Nigeria saying, " I pray for the peace of Nigeria and pray for me also".

The Speaker was accompanied by the Nigerian Ambassador to the Holy See, General George Godwin Umo (rtd) who disclosed that the Pope has been holding mass in honour of the 26 Nigerian girls that died in the Mediterranean sea while trying to enter Italy few weeks ago.

Hon Dogara is in Italy on the invitation of the President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Ms Laura Boldrini,  for an international conference on "Human Trafficking and women empowerment: The Partnership between Nigeria and Italy."

Former VicePresident, Alex Ekwueme has died after a brief ailment in a London hospital.

His demise was announced by his elder brother, HRH. Prof Laz Ekwueme, the Igwe of Oko in Anambra State in a statement.

“The Ekwueme family regrets to announce the peaceful passing away of their patriarch, the former Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme GCON. The sad event occurred at The London Clinic at 10:00 pm on Sunday 19th November 2017,” the statement said.

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett says the very best investment you can make is one that "you can't beat," can't be taxed and not even inflation can take away from you.

"Ultimately, there's one investment that supersedes all others: Invest in yourself," Buffett says in a recent interview with Forbes. "Nobody can take away what you've got in yourself, and everybody has potential they haven't used yet."
One of Buffett's investments in himself came in early adulthood, when he signed up for a $100 Dale Carnegie public speaking course that he says changed his life.
"I was terrified of public speaking when I was young. I couldn't do it," Buffett says. In fact, he admits he would become physically ill when the time came to take the podium.
The course was taught at Dale Carnegie, the institute named for the influential speaker and author of "How to Win Friends and Influence People."

"You can't believe what I was like if I had to give a talk," Buffett recalls in the biography "The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life." "I would throw up."
Even so, the young investor was determined to get over his crippling fear of public speaking and to woo Susan Thompson, who he would later marry.
"I proposed to my wife actually during the middle of the course, I got so confident about my abilities," Buffett tells Forbes. "It also helped me sell stocks in Omaha, despite being 21 and looking even younger."
Buffett tells Forbes that you can exponentially increase your potential "by simply being able to communicate better" and "enhancing your talents."

US singer Tom Petty died on Monday night at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles after he suffered cardiac arrest, manager Tony Dimitriades said.

The singer-songwriter was reportedly rushed to the UCLA Santa Monica hospital after being found unconscious in his Malibu home, but could not be revived.

“We are devastated to announce the untimely death of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty,” Dimitriades said on behalf of the family.

“He died peacefully at 8.40pm surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”

The musician gained fame as part of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the late 1970s, a band that was seen as integral to the heartland rock movement. Their biggest hits included I Won’t Back Down and American Girl.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted Petty and the Heartbreakers in 2002, praised them as “durable, resourceful, hard-working, likeable and unpretentious”.

Petty was originally part of country rock band Mudcrutch who gained regional popularity but did not attract a mainstream audience. They later reformed in 2007 but originally split after Petty and other members joined the Heartbreakers. In 1977 the band gained success with the song Breakdown but it was their second album You’re Gonna Get It! that became a Top 40 hit.

Throughout the 80s, the band enjoyed major hits including You Got Lucky and Change of Heart and collaborated with Bob Dylan as well as Stevie Nicks. Petty continued to work with Dylan as part of the band Traveling Wilburys alongside Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne.

“It’s shocking, crushing news,” Bob Dylan told Rolling Stone in astatement. “I thought the world of Tom. He was great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.”

Petty also enjoyed solo success but always returned to the Heartbreakers, releasing their final album in 2014. “I don’t see that I have anything to offer as a solo artist that I couldn’t do within the group better,” he told the Sun. “We get along so well it’s embarrassing really. It’s a love fest!”

The band had been on a 40th anniversary tour since April that finished last week at the Hollywood Bowl. In an interview with Rolling Stone last December, he suggested it would probably be his last.

“We’re all on the backside of our 60s,” he said. “I have a granddaughter now I’d like to see as much as I can. I don’t want to spend my life on the road. This tour will take me away for four months. With a little kid, that’s a lot of time.”

Petty was outspoken in his protection of the rights of artists, taking issue with record companies on a number of occasions about what he believed to be unjust practices. Earlier this year he was named MusiCares person of the year for his “career-long interest in defending artists’ rights” as well as for his charitable work with homeless people in Los Angeles.

Throughout his career, he sold more than 80m records worldwide.

Florida-born Petty caught the rock’n’roll bug after he was introduced by his uncle to Elvis Presley, who was shooting the picture Follow That Dream on location in Florida in 1960.

He said he began working on music in earnest after seeing the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964.

He would speak of being consumed by rock music since childhood, to the point where his father, whom Petty would later say beat him savagely, thought he was “mental.”

Awed by the chiming guitars of the Byrds, the melodic genius of the Beatles and the snarling lyrics of Dylan, he was amazed to find that other kids were feeling the same way. “You’d go and see some other kid whose hair was long, this was around 65, and go, ‘Wow, there’s one like me,’ “ he said in 1989. “You’d go over and talk and he’d say, ‘I’ve got a drum set.’ ‘You do? Great!’ That was my whole life.”

Amid his successes, Petty also suffered dark periods during a career spanning five decades.

A 2015 biography of the singer, Petty: The Biography, revealed his heroin addiction in the 1990s.

Author Warren Zanes said in an interview with the Washington Post Petty succumbed to the drug because he “had encounters with people who did heroin, and he hit a point in his life when he did not know what to do with the pain he was feeling”.

Petty also suffered from depression, channelling his pain into 1999’s Echo, during which he was also dealing with a divorce. In 2002, he married Dana York and said he had been in therapy for six years to deal with depression.

“It’s a funny disease because it takes you a long time to really come to terms with the fact that you’re sick – medically sick, you’re not just suddenly going out of your mind,” he said at the time.

‘Wo’, a hit song by rapper Olamide Adedeji, is the most popular song of the year, a fellow artiste Wizkid has said.


The street anthem which was released about two months ago has rapidly soared to the top of numerous singles charts in Nigeria and Africa.

Wizkid, who has also released hugely successful songs like ‘Daddy Yo’ and ‘Come Closer’ in 2017, acknowledged Olamide’s ‘Wo’ as being the best in a Twitter post on Sunday.

Despite still being in October — with the possibility of another song emerging to outshine ‘W0’ — Wizkid tweeted: “NP Wo olamide all day! Biggest naija song 2017!”

Even when a fan told him that ‘Penalty’ by Small Doctor is more successful than ‘Wo’, Wizkid remained unswayed, maintaining that the YBNL record label head honcho is deserving of the commendation.

Wizkid and Olamide, who recently teamed up for ‘Ori Mi’, first collaborated in 2011 on ‘Omo To Shan’.

The singer made history last Friday for being the first Nigerian singer to headline a sold-out concert at the iconic Royal Albert Hall, London, UK.

The Latest on the release from prison of former football legend O.J. Simpson. Footage released by a Nevada prisons official shows O.J. Simpson sporting a ball cap, blue denim jacket, jeans and white tennis shoes as he regained his freedom.

Simpson was released at 12:08 a.m. PT from Lovelock Correctional Center in northern Nevada, state prisons spokeswoman Brooke Keast told The Associated Press. He had served nine years for a botched hotel room heist in Las Vegas.
”I don’t have any information on where he’s going,” said Keast, who watched Simpson sign paperwork shortly before being freed. Photographs released by Keast showed Simpson, seated at a table, signing the documents as others watched.
The brief video released on social media shows Simpson being told to ”come on out” by a prison staffer. He could be seen responding ”OK” as he left through an open door, wearing a ball cap, denim jacket, jeans and white tennis shoes. The footage then showed a nighttime scene of a darkened street apparently outside the prison.

O.J. Simpson’s friend from Naples, Florida, Tom Scotto, says he was with the former football great after he was freed from a remote Nevada prison.
Scotto said in brief text messages early Sunday to The Associated Press that he was there but couldn’t talk.
Scotto didn’t say where they were going or whether Simpson’s sister, Shirley Baker of Sacramento, California, or his daughter, Arnelle Simpson of Fresno, California, were with him.
The three attended Simpson’s parole hearing in July at Lovelock Correctional Center in northern Nevada.
That’s the same prison where Keast says Simpson was released at 12:08 a.m. PDT Sunday.
Simpson’s living arrangements outside prison have not been made public.
He has said he wanted to move back to Florida, where he lived before his armed robbery conviction in Las Vegas in a September 2007 confrontation with two sports memorabilia dealers.
But Florida prison officials said documents weren’t filed, and the state attorney general says she doesn’t want Simpson to live in the state.

The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited says it has awarded scholarships to the best and outstanding 400 university students, totalling N60million to enable them excel in their different fields of academic endeavours.
Speaking at the presentation of the awards for the 2015/2016 academic session at the Port Harcourt Literary Society Library, the SPDC General Manager, External Relations, Mr Igo Weli said: “SPDC does not segregate, the scholarship encompasses all fields of endeavours provided you are from the Niger Delta region and very brilliant.”
The Tide correspondent gathered that each student is given N150, 000 per annum, while the scholarship runs between four to six years depending on the course of study.
Weli stated that the SPDC JV university scholarship programme started since 1953 as one of its earliest Corporate Social Responsibility (CSO) initiatives, seven years before Nigeria gained her independence, adding that the initiative has continued to contribute to Nigeria’s human capital development.
The general manager said that SPDC was extremely proud of the success the initiative had recorded, having developed critical manpower for the development of modern Nigeria.
“From those early steps in 1953, what is now known as the NNPC/SPDC JV Scholarship programme has afforded many Nigerians the opportunity to acquire higher education, with many going on to become leaders in their chosen professions,” Weli said.
He stressed that this year’s award was very significant as it shows SPDC’s commitment to contribute to Nigeria’s human capital development despite the low oil price in the global market and the economic challenges in the country which have greatly impacted the funding of oil and gas operations.
Weli added that the company has launched the ‘Scholarship Meet Shell Programme,’ in which the beneficiaries meet and interact with Shell staff on their different chosen professions.
“Today, the SPDC JV runs four scholarship schemes as follows: The Secondary School, which supports over 1,000 students in SPDC’s operational areas in the Niger Delta annually, the Cradle-to-Career, which is an all-inclusive scholarship that provides opportunities and strong foundation for brilliant pupils in public primary schools to attend reputable secondary schools in Nigeria. The scholarship covers tuition and boarding awarded to 60 gifted young people from the Niger Delta annually,” he said.
He added that “the SPDC University Scholarship Scheme comprises two categories namely: the National Merit Award which is open to all Nigerians and the Operational Areas Award which is for undergraduates from our areas of operations in Abia, Bayelsa, Delta, Imo and Rivers States, and finally the Overseas Postgraduate scholarship programme which is awarded to 10 indigenes from Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta and Imo States annually for a Master’s programme in Oil and Gas-related disciplines at three top United Kingdom universities.”
Weli further stated that apart from helping to develop critical manpower, SPDC interventions in the educational sector over the years cover the building of science blocks, donation of science equipment, and establishment of the UNESCO ‘Education for All (EFA)’ goals, thereby ultimately contributing significantly to attaining the Millennium Development Goals on education in the Niger Delta and Nigeria.
Also speaking, Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Hon Tamunosisi Gogo-Jaja, represented by the Head Unit, Ministry of Education, Mrs Nwamaka Joseph, urged the students to take the opportunity given them by SPDC seriously, and expressed the Rivers State Government’s gratitude to the tremendous contribution SPDC has made in ensuring education for all in the state.
In her remarks, a motivational speaker, Mrs Osasere Esekhaigbe enjoined the beneficiaries to take their academic pursuit seriously, adding that there was need for them to distinguish themselves by having good defendable grades in their courses of study.
Esekhaigbe charged the students not to settle for the SPDC required 2.5 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), but thrive to score 4.5-5.0 CGPA as that was the only way they can compete favourably in the job markets.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, a student of the Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Amassoma, from Agbere Agbama Community in Bayelsa State, Miss Tonaria Irene Ebilade said she believed the reason why she was given the scholarship was God’s divine favour, even as she said that her academic performance in the West African School Certificate (WAEC), Post UTME and her high CGPA of 3.9 played significant roles in her success story.
Ebilade urged other students and youth to take their academic pursuit seriously, adding that a time would come when they least expected and success would shine in their way.
Also speaking, another beneficiary, John Kingsley said God’s grace, favour and SPDC’s love for academic excellence propelled him to hedge on, and thanked God for the opportunity to carve a niche for himself.
On her part, a mother of one of the beneficiaries, Mrs Chioma Ndah said she would ever remain grateful to SPDC for taking the burden of paying university tuition and other fees off the family’s shoulders, as she and her husband were already finding it difficult to fend for their six children at the same time.

Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, who helped usher in the 1960s sexual revolution with his groundbreaking men's magazine and built a business empire around his libertine lifestyle, died on Wednesday at the age of 91.

The magazine posted a photo in black and white of its creator, accompanied by one of his quotes that read: "Life it too short to be living somebody else's dream." Describing him as an "American icon", they tweeted: "Hugh M. Hefner passed away today. He was 91. #RIPHef"
In a further statement Playboy Enterprises said Hefner "peacefully passed away today from natural causes at his home, The Playboy Mansion, surrounded by loved ones".
His son Cooper Hefner, the chief creative officer of Playboy Enterprises, said in a statement that his father "defined a lifestyle and ethos that lie at the heart of the Playboy brand".
He added: "My father lived an exceptional and impactful life as a media and cultural pioneer and a leading voice behind some of the most significant social and cultural movements of our time in advocating free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom.
"He will be greatly missed by many, including his wife Crystal, my sister Christie and my brothers David and Marston and all of us at Playboy Enterprises."
Singer and actress Nancy Sinatra paid tribute to him as "one of the nicest men I've ever known", adding: "Godspeed, Hugh Hefner."
Actor Rob Lowe tweeted: "I had a number of great conversations and with Hugh Hefner. Was such an interesting man. True legend. What an end of an era!"
Hefner was sometimes characterised as an oversexed Peter Pan as he kept a harem of young blondes that numbered as many as seven at his legendary Playboy Mansion. This was chronicled in "The Girls Next Door," a TV reality show that aired from 2005 through 2010. He said that thanks to the impotency-fighting drug Viagra he continued exercising his libido into his 80s.

Sterling K. Brown’s Emmys speech was cut short on Sunday after the This Is Us star became the first black actor to win the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series since 1998.

“To my fellow nominees, I’m a fan. I love you all,” said Brown, who plays Randall Pearson on the NBC drama, when he took the stage to accept his award.
“This one right here?” he continued, referring to his trophy before giving a shout out to the fictional characters played by Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), and Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street), respectively. (Braugher was the last black actor to win the award before Brown.)
“When I think about it, Walter White held this joint. Dick Whitman held this joint. And 19 years ago, Detective Frank Pembleton held this joint. I just want to say, Mr. Braugher, whether it’s at Stanford University or on this Emmys stage, it is my supreme honor to follow in your footsteps,” Brown said.
“I wanna thank my cast. You are the best white TV family that a brother has ever had, better than the white folks who raised Webster,” Brown told his This is Us costars in the audience, not long before the music began to play and cut his time short. The Sosoliso plane crash survivor’s qualification, was confirmed on the official Instagram account of AGT, in a post that read: “Your #DunkinSave votes turned @kechi_agt into a finalist.”
The Nigerian singer was able to make it to the top 10, thanks to the Dunkin Save voting process, which gives viewers the opportunity to send the contestant of their choice into the last stage of the talent competition.
The Dunkin Save voting was between Kechi, a magician Colin Cloud, and a dance group Diavolo.
Okwuchi had earlier pleaded with her fans to help her earn a place on AGT finals, saying “I want nothing more”.

Chelsea have denied reports of former Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel replacing Antonio Conte as the new head coach of the Premier League champions.

It was being widely reported in the German media that the German will take over the Italian after Conte was left frustrated with lack of backing from the Chelsea board in the transfer market. (Premier League: Antonio Conte salutes his Chelsea fighters after battling display)

However, according to reports in the Independent, the London club has rubbished such claims and have said that there is no such plan in place for now and Tuchel is not on their radar to take over.

A difficult summer including a row with Diego Costa and struggles in the transfer market have led to reports suggesting that Conte is unhappy and is planning to quit. There were also contrasting reports coming out that there is a power struggle between him and members of the club's hierarchy, which could lead to his departure.

Last week Conte talked about his vision for a long-term plan at Stamford Bridge, but stopped short of committing of being around to finish the job.

"For every coach it's important to give continuity to the club because when you arrive you don't know what you'll find," he said. "And when you understand your basis you have to try to work step-by-step, year-by-year to improve this basis, to make this basis more solid and to build a good structure.

"To fight to win the title, to try to win. Last season we did a fantastic season because there wasn't this foundation or basis. Last season we started to build this foundation and we won so it means we built something. But now it's not enough, so we have to improve, to extend this basis, work together with new players. I think we need time. We need time."

James was an initial investor in Blaze in 2012, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell, but in 2015, James actually left McDonald's to become part of Blaze's marketing campaigns.

A former Nigerian permanent representative to the United Nations, Maitama Sule has died.


The elder statesman known for his oratory died earlier today in a Cairo, Egypt according to a statement released by the family. The body of Alhaji Sule who holds the title of Danmasanin Kano is expected to arrive Nigeria tomorrow Tuesday, July 4. A funeral will be conducted at the Kano Central Jumaat mosque at the Emir's palace at 30 pm.pm Nigerian time.

He was a First Republic Minister of Mines and Power, also, the former Presidential aspirant under the defunct NPN and also a former member of the parilment.

Diego Costa has announced he is set to leave Chelsea this summer after Antonio Conte told him he no longer wants him at the club, by leaving him a message.

Costa, 28, wants to quit Stamford Bridge to move back to Atletico Madrid, but that avenue has been blocked by the La Liga club's transfer ban.

Chelsea want Everton's Romelu Lukaku, who is keen on a return to his former club, and are willing to sell Costa to fund a potential £100million deal. the Premier League champions' top scorer is convinced he will depart this summer after being told by Conte that he will not be his main man next season.

'Conte has sent me a message telling me I'm not in his plans,' Costa said after Spain's 2-2 draw with Colombia on Wednesday night.

Apparently upset at the way he was told Costa added: ‘It seems I didn’t have a good season. It was just a simple message after all I’ve done for the club but if he doesn’t want me there then I will have to look for a [new] team.’

Asked if anyone else from Chelsea had contacted him Costa said: ‘No, but if the manager gets in contact with you to tell you that you are not wanted then you have to leave.’

The Oscar-winning actor and his human-rights lawyer wife of two years, Amal, announced Tuesday that they were the proud new parents of twins, Ella and Alexander.

Clooney has donned many hats in his life, spending time as an actor, director, producer and activist, but fatherhood has always seemed far away. Was it the early onset salt-and-pepper hair? The coterie of models that have found themselves on his arm for fleeting moments over the years? The insistence by tabloids and fellow co-stars that it was time for him to settle down?

Maybe. Or perhaps it was the simple fact that Clooney himself said again and again that he would not reproduce. In several interviews. Many, many times. For many, many years.

A first-time father at 56, Clooney was often asked throughout his career if the single life was his ultimate future. But after proposing marriage to Amal in April 2014, and marrying her that September (as well as sharing wedding photos with People in the U.S. and Hello magazine in the U.K.), it seemed like anything was possible for the man who once said, "I don't see myself ever having kids."

But it was a long road to get there. "I don't have that gene that people have to replicate," he said to People in 2006.


When Esquire asked him why he wasn't married with kids, he replied, "I haven't had aspirations in that way, ever." And as for people who thought it was weird that a man in his 50s was single and childless? "What do you do? Should I go, 'I got to get me some kids right now!' and rush out and impregnate someone?"

The death of actor and politician Vinod Khanna has left the world 'poorer,' filmmakers Mahesh Bhatt and Sudhir Mishra told NDTV on Thursday. Mr Khanna, 70, died of bladder cancer in the Mumbai hospital he had been taken to several weeks ago. Vinod Khanna was the star of iconic films such as Amar Akbar Anthony
, Parvarish, Chandni and Qurbaani. Mahesh Bhatt, who directed the actor in his 1979 film Lahu Ke Do Rang
and also became a follower of spiritual guru Osho at the same time Mr Khanna did in the Eighties, told NDTV, "I am poorer today with his passing away. He was one giant who touched my heart deeply. He trusted me during my struggling years." Mr Bhatt had in fact started his journey into spiritualism with the late Mr Khanna. He said, "We had adventures together. We entered the world of spiritual enlightenment, which took us to Rajneesh's ashram. We drank, we fought and we loved each other. And in this journey, we drifted apart, because he turned to politics, which was a different world. However, he maintained a warm relationship with me."
When he was diagnosed with this ailment (cancer), I asked him he if was OK. He laughed," Mr Bhatt said. Vinod Khanna was taken to hospital on March 31, ostensibly to be treated for dehydration. A picture of him in hospital, looking worryingly gaunt and ill, went viral some days later, prompting speculation that Mr Khanna was in hospital with cancer. His son, actor Rahul Khanna, and hospital authorities insisted he was getting better.

Vinod Khanna returned to acting after a five-year break spent in the Osho Ashram. He later embarked on a very successful career in politics. "He was tough, lion-hearted and generous. He had the guts to risk his all. He was in full bloom when he decided to break his relationship with the movie industry and look for enduring fruits in the ashram of Osho. Of course it was not successful and he went into mild depression after he came back. However, he returned with that much vigour and energy as he had during his initial days. He always had the courage to reinvent himself," Mahesh Bhatt told NDTV.

Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra told NDTV, "I belong to the generation who was in school when Mr Khanna entered the industry. He defined how villainy could be cool. He was an actor who had guts. We couldn't take our eyes off him."

"None of the younger actors after him had that kind of swag and charisma that he had. He was at the top of his game. He was a genuine big actor, star and a man who was adored by cinema," Mr Mishra, director of acclaimed films such as Chameli and Hazaaron Khawhishein Aisi
, said.

Vinod Khanna, who was very popular with his colleagues, was also known for his generosity, Sudhir Mishra revealed. "One of my unfulfilled wishes was that I would have loved to work with him. He helped people in the industry. He had given money to my younger brother to make a documentary. It is a big loss. The whole memory of childhood is gone," Mr Mishra told NDTV.

If there is a Nokia phone that has grabbed more attention and headlines than others since the company announced its comeback to the market, it has been the Nokia 3310 (2017). Now it seems like the revamped version of the feature phone will be made available later this month by the Finnish company as device's pre-order listings for Germany and Austria have tipped it to release on April 28. Further, the 3G variant listing of the phone has been confirmed to be false by the company.

As per the pre-order listings spotted by NokiaPowerUser, the Nokia 3310 (2017) will be made available in both Germany and Austria on April 28. Interestingly, the device seems to carry a higher price tag (mostly around EUR 56) than company's recommended price of EUR 49 (roughly Rs. 3,400) in these listings.

"What makes these listings appear genuine is the fact that they have article numbers for Nokia 3310 models valid across other retailers," NPU said in its report. The retailers who have posted the pre-order listings for the phone include Comstern (Germany and Austria), Allstechnik, and E-Tec.

Separately, HMD Global, the company which currently holds the right to manufacture and sell phones under Nokia brand name, has confirmed to NPU that a pre-order listing of a Nokia 3310 (2017) variant with support for 3G is incorrect and the phone will only be supporting 2G connectivity.

The 2G connectivity limitation is something that might prevent the feature phone from being launched in many developed markets but it seems like the hope that this 3G variant listing might have given has now been taken away by the company.

To recall, Nokia 3310 (2017), despite being just a feature phone, managed to take away the spotlight from most smartphones at MWC 2017 at this can be seen as the unique selling point for Nokia. The device doesn't pack any powerful features but the nostalgia factor was enough for it to grab attention from users.

President of African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, has predicted that business mogul, Aliko Dangote, may become the largest exporter of rice globally in the next five years.

He said Africa must focus on agriculture to drive growth and create jobs on the continent.

The former minister of Agriculture in Nigeria who spoke at the Mo Ibrahim Forum in Morocco at the weekend recalled that when he (Adesina) was minister, Dangote was the biggest importer in the country at the time.

According to him, Dangote looked at the policies put in place then and changed his business model from being an importer to a local producer.

Recounting the role the richest man in Africa played on a day he also considered his happiest day as a minister in Nigeria, Adesina said, “Dangote decided to invest $300 million in producing and processing rice in Nigeria and later changed his mind from the amount to $1 billion.

“If they continue that policy, he would probably be the single largest producer of rice in the world in about four years. The reason why I was so excited about that is that agriculture is cool, agriculture is a business that pays in the long run”.

LEADERSHIP recalls that a tripartite agreement put together by Dangote Rice limited, a subsidiary of the Dangote Group, to create jobs for 16,000 outgrower rice farmers in Sokoto was recently signed with the Sokoto State government and rice growers in the country, after which he launched the rice outgrowers scheme in the state.

The chairman of Dangote Rice Limited said the company was moved to go into rice cultivation because of the genuine interest of the federal government to revive agriculture as the mainstay of the economy and reduce importation of foods that could be produced locally.

Dangote who lamented that Nigeria consumes 6.5 metric tonnes of rice which costs the nation over $2 billion annually noted, however, that it was heartening that government now has policy direction which encourages private sector’s active participation in agriculture.

He said, “In the next three years, we want to produce one million tons of quality rice and make it available and affordable to the people. We hope to do 150,000 per hectare and when we are done, Nigeria will not have anything to do with importation of rice.

“Dangote Rice outgrowers scheme is committed to creating significant number of jobs, increasing the incomes of small holders farmers and ensuring food security in the country by providing high quality seeds, fertilizers and agro-chemicals as well as technical assistance on best agricultural practice to farmers.

“This Scheme will help to diversify the economy, alleviate poverty and reduce the nation’s import bill. The scheme has been designed as a one stop solution for the rice value chain”.

Messaging app forecast to attract revenues of $3bn a year by 2019 by attracting hard-to-reach youth market.

Snapchat could become more popular with advertisers than Twitter, Yahoo and AOL within three years, with the messaging app company forecast to bring in revenues of more than $3bn (£2.4bn) a year before the end of 2019.

That bullish forecast is based on advertisers targeting the youth audience that the disappearing photo app has seemingly cornered. More than half (51%) of video users on Snapchat are under 24, compared with 23% for Facebook and 17% for Google’s YouTube, according to Ampere Analysis.

Brands are also keen to see a true rival emerge to challenge Facebook and Google, which have recently come in for heavy criticism for their advertising practices. The two web giants currently account for 58% of the $141bn global mobile ad market.

“You often hear advertisers saying they are getting uncomfortable with such a large portion of ad spend going to just two players,” said Cathy Boyle, principal analyst at eMarketer, which produced the global mobile ad forecast. “If there can be a third or fourth player they are interested in spreading the wealth beyond the duopoly.”

WPP chief executive Sir Martin Sorrell recently referred to Snapchat’s potential to become a “third force” alternative but many investors and analysts remain wary of Snapchat’s future.

After a much-hyped stock market flotation earlier this month that valued Snap, the company behind Snapchat, at $29bn the company’s share price has steadily sunk. The shares soared from their $17 IPO price to $26 in two days, but are now back at just over $19.

“Snap is a promising early-stage company with significant opportunity,” said Brian Wieser, senior analyst at Pivotal Research in a note to investors. “Unfortunately, it is significantly overvalued given the likely scale of its long-term opportunity and the risks associated with executing against that opportunity.”

Wieser, who says Pivotal is a “cautious optimist” on Snapchat, said that its model for the business is “potentially stretched” at even a bearish target price of just $10 a share.

The list of issues and potential threats is extensive. Omnipresent is Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook, which dominates social media with 1.2 billion daily users and owns Snapchat’s most direct competitor, Instagram.

Last summer, Instagram – which has 600 million users to Snapchat’s 158 million – launched a function called Stories, which is similar to Snapchat’s own story feature. Instagram Stories has already achieved 150 million daily active users. Instagram Stories’ launch intensified another concern: Snapchat’s slowing growth.

The number of Snapchat users grew by 14% and 17% in the first two quarters of last year. Following the launch of Instagram Stories, Snapchat’s growth slumped to 7% and just 3.2% in the final two quarters of 2016. Snap has blamed “technical issues” in the rollout of new products, but admitted in its IPO document that Facebook/Instagram would be a huge threat.

“Our competition may mimic our products and therefore harm our user engagement and growth,” Snap acknowledged.

While Snap’s IPO has made 26-year-old co-founder Evan Spiegel the world’s youngest billionaire with a $5.5bn fortune, his business remains heavily loss-making.

Snap raised $3.4bn at its flotation, giving it plenty of cash to continue to build on innovations such as its launch of video-capturing spectacles. But it lost $373m on its day-to-day business in 2015, and that figure spiralled to $515m last year.

One of the most highly publicised issues has been Snap’s decision to keep total control of the company’s voting rights with its founders and early investors. In its IPO filing the company said it believed it was the first US business to go public with shares that do not grant any voting rights to stock market investors.

“We … cannot predict the impact … the concentrated control by our founders may have on our stock price or our business,” the company said.

Corporate governance experts have advised potential investors to avoid Snap because of the voting rights issue. “It’s about accountability. If you give your money to someone you want to make sure they’re using it properly and can justify their actions back to you,” said Sarah Wilson, chief executive of investor advisory firm Manifest. “Power is handed over to a select few with the shareholders bearing considerable financial risk – remember those founders will be getting gold-plated pay schemes as well as their stock ownership.”

However, WPP’s Sorrell recently countered this view, arguing companies with dominant shareholders or owners – such as Snap, Facebook and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp and Fox – that “offend” good corporate governance practices can take more risks and tend to perform better financially.

Snapchat’s $22bn market capitalisation is already double that of Twitter ($11bn), but it remains a minnow compared with Facebook ($393bn) and Google ($596bn).

It is undeniable that the digital darling is on to something – its users love it. Two-thirds of them check the app every day – and the average daily user visits the app 18 times a day, spending an average of 25 to 30 minutes a day sending snaps and watching messages from their friends, celebrities and advertising brands.

This level of engagement from a youth audience notorious for fickle attention has helped fuel a surge in revenues from $58.7m in 2015 to $404m last year and an expected $1bn this year.

Nick Baughan, chief executive of media agency Maxus UK, said the Snapchat opportunity is real but that advertisers also remain cautious. “It isn’t a case of the emperor’s new clothes, it is an exciting opportunity,” he said. “But the IPO came quite early, before advertising products have grown to full maturity.

“At the moment Snapchat sits firmly in most agencies and advertisers’ innovation [budget] pot. As responsible advertisers and agencies we need to make sure we are where audiences are. But there is no point in being innovative unless Snapchat can back it up with evidence-based innovation.”

Rapper Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre will reportedly reunite to induct their late friend Tupac Shakur into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next month.

The “Gin and Juice” hitmaker will lead the tributes to Tupac, while Dr. Dre is in talks to appear at the ceremony alongside his former Death Row Records labelmate. According to TMZ, Snoop Dogg will perform three songs and Tupac’s 1996 hit “California Love,” which featured Dr. Dre, is on the set list.

The late rapper, who was murdered in 1996 at the age of 25, will join the class of 2017, alongside folk icon Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, Yes, Pearl Jam, and Journey at the Rock Hall’s 32nd annual induction ceremony, which will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on April 7.

Super Mario Run – the short Italian plumber’s first foray onto smartphones – is now available on Android in some parts of the world, a bit earlier than its expected release time. It retains the existing play model devised by Nintendo – you get a trial of all three modes, in World Tour, Toad Rally, and Kingdom Builder, before having to pony up a one-time fee of Rs. 800 / $9.99 to unlock everything else.


The game had first arrived on iOS late last year, and was downloaded 40 million times in the first four days after launch, and hit about 78 million by the end of January. But Super Mario Run was having trouble converting those downloads into paid customers – by Nintendo’s estimates, only 5 percent had done so.

Nintendo seems to following a gradual rollout strategy for the game’s Android launch. If it still says ‘pre-register’ on the Google Play Store where you live (and you’re done waiting), you can always download and sideload it from APK Mirror, which has been kind enough to upload the APK file for Super Mario Run.

There’s news for Super Mario Run players on iOS, too. The game has been updated to v2.0, and brings new playable characters – to be frank, there are just colour variations of Yoshi – along with providing more content to the free tier.

If you complete one of Bowser’s challenges, you’ll unlock the previously locked course 1-4, that allows you to battle with the aforementioned fella. Plus, if you clear course 1-4, Nintendo will grant you new courses in the game’s Toad Rally mode.
