A church in Ghana’s capital, Accra, has held a thanksgiving service for Chelsea following its recent success in the Premier League.

Long-time Chelsea fan Pastor Azigiza encouraged people to come wearing football tops of their favourite team.



Standing behind a Chelsea cake on a stage made to look like a football pitch he said: “Chelsea, by the grace of God, came first.”

He told the BBC he wanted to use the power of football to talk about God.

Azigiza also led the congregation in a verse of the Chelsea anthem Blue is the Colour.


The pastor, who at one time was a radio DJ, was also teasing his immediate boss at the Living Streams International Church, Reverend Dr Ebenezer Markwei, who is an Arsenal fan.

In his sermon, Pastor Markwei talked about “the good, the bad and the ugly of rivalry” suggesting that football fans should engage in friendly rivalry.

He said there was fellowship in rejoicing in others’ successes, so when it is your turn others would do the same.

The one blemish in Chelsea’s domestic season was that they lost the FA Cup Final – 2-1 to Arsenal.

But during the service Azigiza thanked God for Arsenal’s victory “because it means that [Arsenal manager] Arsene Wenger will stay” and they cannot win the league with him, he said.

Fans of all teams were welcome to the service and Azigiza told the BBC that he wanted to defuse rivalry between supporters of different clubs.

Although, he added, they were reminded that Chelsea had just been crowned Premier League champions.

Chelsea won the Premier League in May with 93 points, seven ahead of their nearest rivals Tottenham.

The English Premier League has a large and passionate following in Ghana.

Popular Nigerian investigative journalist, Kemi Olunloyo, has taken to her social media page to write a long note, explaining why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may have a hard time prosecuting Singer Naira Marley who was arrested by the anti graft agency on the 10th of May, over alleged crimes bordering on internet fraud.
Kemi Olunloyo who has in several occasions aired her support for the up-and-coming singer wrote;
“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has written Visa Inc. and Mastercard Inc. to furnish it with details on credit cards used by musician, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley.”
The commission said the cards recovered from the artiste during his arrest were used for alleged identity theft and credit card fraud.”
According to court documents obtained by The PUNCH, the EFCC’s letters to Visa and Mastercard – titled, ‘Investigation Activities’ – were dated May 13, 2019, three days after it arrested Naira Marley”
The first card with number 4921819410257431 was issued by Lloyds Bank Plc and bears the name Timea Fedorne Tatar. The second card with number 4539782440624281 was issued by Barclays Bank Plc and bears the name Nicole Louise Maylon, while the third card with number 4757147207869807 was issued by Santander UK Plc and bears the name Sharon Broad. Likewise, in the EFCC’s letter to Mastercard, the commission asked the company to furnish it with information about the last five transactions on a Mastercard card recovered from the musician. The card number 5354631405139323 was issued by Prepay Technologies Ltd and bears the name Linh H. Mendez Rojas.”
Naira Marley was arrested on May 10 in Lekki, Lagos, together with Omomniyi Temidayo (aka Zlatan Ibile) and three others for alleged advance fee fraud. Following his arrest, the anti-graft agency filed an 11-count against Naira Marley. The charges with suit number FHC/L/178C/19 were filed before a Lagos State High Court then to a federal high court (Punch Newspapers)”

Prepaid metres are now officially for sale by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
This was disclosed in a statement by the company’s head of communication, Emeka Ezeh who described it as Meter Asset Provider (MAP) programme and urged its customers to take advantage of the initiative and get pre-paid meters within 10 days.
The company’s spokesman said that the pre-paid meters would cost N36,991:50k for single phase and N67,055:85k for three-phase pre-paid meters; and this is exclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT) charge.
Ezeh said the company had been working closely with its MAP provider, Mojec International Limited, to ensure that “the experience is smooth and easy for its customers’’.
Ezeh said: “For customers to get started, they are expected to visit the EEDC District Office in charge of their area from June 15, to pick up the meter application form.
“The forms, which are serialized, will be issued to customers free of charge and should not be photocopied, as the photocopied version will not be treated.
“Once the customer completes the form and returns same to the customer service representative, the pre-survey process will be initiated, after which the customer will be issued a Demand Note with which to pay for the meter at the designated bank.
“Once payment is made, the company’s MAP provider is under obligation to meter the customer within 10 days of payment.
“Customers are therefore advised to only make payment into a dedicated bank account that will be provided to them, and not to any individual or group.
“It is important to reiterate that the meter application form is issued at no cost and customers should make payment to designated bank account that will be provided to them through the Demand Note, and they should not pay to any staff of the MAP or EEDC’’.
He noted that for further enquiries or assistance, customers should approach the customer service officers at EEDC district offices within the areas.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved Mojec International Limited to be EEDC’s MAP implementer.
The MAP regulation was said to have been initiated by the Federal Government and NERC last year to help hasten and close-up existing metering gap in the sector through the engagement of third party agents saddled with the responsibility of metering electricity customers.

Bernhard Schlagheck, the German Ambassador to Nigeria, says Nigeria as the future if Africa is the future of world of mankind.

Schlagheck said this on Friday during delegation meeting of Follow the Money and Connected Development (CODE), a Non-Government Organization that focuses on governance and accountability, in Abuja.

The german ambassador said Germany and Nigeria shared similarities in diverse areas, adding that Nigerians could contribute towards growth of their country through tracking governance processes to ensure accountability.

Schlagheck said: “There are developments in every society that must be tracked. To achieve that, there is need for distinction of people to do such.

“Nigeria as the future of Africa is the future of the world of mankind that we can ask many important questions and of course this is also applicable in places like Germany, in Europe.

“Although there are obstacles in development processes, Nigerians should strive to focus on cross-fertilisation of good ideas to bring about meaningful growth in future.”

He commended the delegation for their effort in tracking expenditure of public funds to promote accountability and transparency in governance process in the country.

According to him, “this is something that can change things positively. I am quite happy to see many young activists willing to do so”.

Earlier, Mr Hamzat Lawal, Founder, Follow the Money and Chief Executive Officer of CODE, said that they were at the German Embassy to appreciate Schlagheck for his support to the organisation.

He noted that the support by Schlagheck had helped young people learn best practices on modern methods to track public fund spending.

He said they were in Germany this year and won the SDGs awards under mobilise-category, despite the fact that we applied for our papers late.

“Europe and US are struggling with illegal migration because people from other parts of the world are tired of how governments are not ensuring that the services delivered are efficient.”
