PoliticsRe: Aljazeera Airs A Heartbreaking Program About Lagos(25 May 2011 -Video) by samm(m): 2:54pm On May 25, 2011
Desola:
Puhlease! For a second there, I decided against watching the documentary because of the emotional outpours by some posters. So, i've seen it and it's nothing different from the BBC documentary "Welcome To Lagos". Infact, i'd say that was more thought provoking than this one is. This  video only sought to display the stark reality of events in Lagos and I thought it did it justice.

Some people have said that Fashola is elitist and only concerned with the affluent. However, they fail to see that if people keep making Lagos their destination of choice due to the belief of making quick money, and the population keep increasing by the hour, Fashola can not be the messiah to the masses. Lagos is absolutely congested and once migrants from other states start to realise that in order to make the money that they seek, they would be living in the most deplorable of circumstances, the better for them. Fashola is nobody's daddy. He is there to ensure that you have the basic necessities as a human being who has the right to live in the state. It is not up to him to provide you job but to foster the environment in such a way that it wouldn't be difficult for you to achieve that desire. It is the state's government to provide security, good roads, pipe born water, justice et al. However, we all know how the government of the state have been stifled by the federal government in providing electricity and good roads. Lagos is doing exceptionally well with the resources it has at its disposal.

Yes, I am a Lagos indegene and as much as I think it is ridiculous to ask those who are not indegenous to leave, it seems to me now that it is one of the solution to the problems facing the state.

What all these migrants should do now is rather than leaving their states and their state governors to embezzle the money allocated to them as a people, they should start demanding for their rights in their states. Other state governors are the ones laughing now because they have so much fund and so little people to disperse it to so they end up hoarding it all to themselves. Your states are rich, so start demanding for your human rights. Don't leave your states, ask your government to provide for you! This is the reason why some people from the east believe that their states are doing better than some other states in Nigeria. That notion is a big misconception because if half of the population have left to Lagos, and their government have half the population with the allocation for a full population, of course they would appear to be rich.
It is indeed ridiculous to ask "non indigenes" to leave.  You using the term "migrants" is also quite misplaced.

Dude, please remain in South Africa or wherever you say you live. People like you really have nothing to contribute to Nigeria. You talk about SA as if that country started at the same time as Nigeria. FYI, SA was already a full fledged developed country by the 1930s at least. Same as Egypt. The British who ran those colonies adopted a totally different policy there which involved committing funds from national resources to national development. This is why SA and Egypt had their first universities in the 1880s while in Nigeria, the same British, while evacuating our natural resources for over a century, put nothing back in terms of infrastructure, and refused to build any higher institutions  until 1960, when they were about to be kicked out. Even literacy remained at an abject 7%. (Contrast that with 75% today under indigenous rule).

So stop comparing Nigeria to South Africa. They had a hundred years head start on the rest of black Africa in terms of development.

GOD BLESS YOU ROSSIKK

This 'playmode' original poster guy is just one of those 'over critical' Nigerians who have no idea of what nation building entails. Truly, our leadership has failed woefully, but while other nations like Ghana,SA,India manage to put their best foot forward,Nigerians enjoy collaborating with the western media to tell the world how terrible our country is. Aljazeera will never showcase the good sides of Calabar,Lagos Island,VI or Abuja. They are even reluctant to show clips of the new look Oshodi,a view which used to be favorite years back with crowds and molues all mingled together.
Whenever there a tragedy involving loss of lives in other countries, their governments and citizens endeavour to downplay and even reduce the body count. But in Nigeria, whenever there is a crises,OUR OWN JOURNALISTS will be struggling in inflate the actual loss of lives. The Police/Army crises in Badagry yesterday, official reports say that 2 lives were lost. But lo and behold, some Nigerian Journalists have come out to say 8 policemen were killed, others have said,No its 10, Alajazeera will simply summarize this news and tell the world that 20 police men in Lagos have been ambushed and killed by Northern soldiers. When mugus like Playmode hear this, they now start post trash on how terrible Nigeria is.
God help us.
I guess we should just sweep bad news under the carpet altogether. If Aljazeera doesn't show the good new Oshodi, then take photos with your bb bold 10 and put it on facebook or nairaland. Write your own story or put links here on nairaland.
In my opinion, our own journalists are not even doing enough investigative journalism. Official report says 2 lives were lost, Who is "officiating" the newshuh?

The population of Lagos is more than the state can bear! Fashola should get all rid non-lagosians from Lagos!!!!, to many people from other states come to settle in Lagos and yet they are complaining, if they don't like it then go back to your state.

I wish Lagos state can start issuing visa, seriously, if the only residents in Lagos are the original Lagosians, it would be a far better place but you have so many other people moving to Lagos daily, abeg its to much, you should all go back to your states and try to improve it instead of moving to Lasgidis!!!

The problem is more with people like you with half baked ideas and lazy brain syndrome approach of turning the country around. So, if you manage to get into power or you have the option to vote for someone campaigning on sending people away from Lagos, you'd jump in and support such nonsense.

@Violent
This is the best debate on this topic ever. I suppose the way you brought it forward set the tone for the responses.

There are just those that believe every man that so declares himself a man of God should be allowed to do as they please without rebuke.  And for the most part they are simply terrified on the though of being rational in the thoughts when it comes to "Men of God".  I don't know where that fear was put in them. Could it be the thousands or millions of sunday school teachers that you see in every street corner church in Nigeria.
The education and orientation we get in churches which educates more people than all levels of schools combined has really shaped our mentality in Nigeria.
So Oyedepo and CO can continue to capitalize on it.  In my opinion, they are taking advantage of people period but not BREAKING THE LAW. It now becomes a matter of conscience. Do they have one?

@Kobo
A pattern is emerging.  I might finally get to start to begin the journey to scratching the surface of understanding you.  Great points.
PoliticsRe: "We Are Not Slaves" -Coca-Cola Pay Nigerian Day-Workers $2.60 Per Day? by samm(m): 5:44pm On May 18, 2011
Kobo's view point: Government should regulate. In the absense of regulation, companies are free to do as they please.
ekt bear's view point:  No government regulation.  Companies are there to make money. The workers are not being forced to work. They can quit if they do not like the wages or organize and demand for better wages.
Fhemmmy's view point: Companies are obligated to provide a company defined "decent working condition" since government might not be quite effective in regulation companies.

All three viewpoints combined forms a responsible solution.
There should always be balanced government regulation and enforcement e.g. setting minimum wage, good working conditions etc.  A company is out to make money and is mostly obligated to it's shareholders.
In most cases, they have the upper hand when dealing with their workers and not every group can fight for themselves.  In the absence of government regulation, the workers should organize and demand better wages and working conditions.
Other related parties: The society at large. Lawyers, human right groups, labour groups, individual citizens. We should not always be spectators when we hear about things like this.  Every member of society has a duty to push for what is right.  That is how we become better.  It might be "them" today and you or yours tomorrow. With a vigilant society, companies are forced to adopt Fhemmy's viewpoint.  We have to set standards as to what we can tolerate collectively.

If you don't get it, I'm sorry I can't help you. All I've got to say to you is, a fish starts to rotten from its head. If the head is disciplined and honest, the rest of the body will follow suit. If Nigerians are disciplined, corruption will practically disappear, and national rebirth and development will follow suit. Buhari would not necessarily whip everyone into shape, all he needs to do is make a good examples of some criminals and ensure that judiciary system is also disciplined and things will start to fall in place. I hope you now get the drift.
Well, thanks for at least trying. My drift continues to be that the man you are clamoring for has a dangerous well documented past. Iron fist rule is not the answer to Nigeria.
PoliticsRe: NL Official Presidential Opinion Poll by samm(m): 9:44pm On Mar 15, 2011
9ijaMan:
How much sense can one pick from your comments? Are you saying a Buhari in civilian clothing, in a democratic dispensation will be wielding guns and whips?  You claim to be in the USA, how regularly do your colleagues at work arrive late? Ribadu would have been ok, but he's doing the exact thing most of us are blaming GEJ for, mixing with the wrong crowd. The choice of Buhari is simple, his past records and absence of godfathers speaks a lot about him. I want a president who'll hit the ground running and not a trainee president who'll be learning on the job. We've had one long year of a trainee president and we all know what the outcome is.
As much sense as your response. And what do you propose that the Buhari's govt will do as far as employees coming late to work? Sentence them to long terms in jail. If you don't like Ribadu's crowd (by that I guess you mean his political party affiliation), can you let us know Buhari's? His past records of brutality is exactly what we should be careful of. We might not know who his godfathers are for now but we know he had close association with Abacha (another gross human rights violator).

What in the world is Buhari bringing to the table? Sure he can put us all in jail for indiscipline and tardiness but what else?
PoliticsRe: NL Official Presidential Opinion Poll by samm(m): 3:37pm On Mar 15, 2011
GenBuhari:
Abacha is 10 times better than either IBB or OBJ who are PDP godfathers
I am not a fan of Buhari. But I've read your posts and other Buhari supporters alike to try and make sense of the craze about him. But with your above comment, I urge you and his other supporters to re-think your candidate choice.
These rants about indiscipline does not cut it. Nigeria is not a nation of animals waiting to be flogged into order. We need a systematic solution to our problems; not a gun or whip wielding leader to make us form straight lines, set the price of commodities, and ignore human rights.
Nigeria does not need to re-live the times of Abacha. GUNS AND WHIPS are not the answer. Say not to a military style government. Say no to a brain lazy government (GEJ). To me, the most reasonable aspirant is Ribadu.
PoliticsRe: Compare Gej's Cv With Buhari's Cv Here! by samm(m): 6:00pm On Mar 14, 2011
The hatred for GEJ has really turned people to Buhari.  Why not Ribadu?  I strongly believe that Buhari's regime will be like a military regime.  We have passed the era of using brute force to rule a nation.  Long prison sentences and death sentences for crimes in a country is not the answer.  Especially in a country where the court system is lagging.  Everyone sees his "past accomplishments" which I quite don't get.  But no one wants to take a look at this past human rights record.  We hate the PDP but who constitutes the CPC. Do we know what kind of men are in the pack.  ACN is a better choice.  Do not go from one extreme to the other (GEJ-BUHARI).

Is it Ribadu? Even though ACN is a party I like for now, Ribadu is not clear about his calling as far as I can tell.

Who again? Dele Momodu? grin grin grin Just a joker!
Can you explain to me how Ribadu is not clear about his calling. GEJ has lost the votes of a lot of people but I am just terrified at the movement of the people to Buhari.  IS DISCIPLINE THE MOST PRESSING NEED OF NIGERIA?  What are Buhari's positive records?  He was a brutal dictator with no regards for human right. He believes in brute force instead of reasoning.  We should stop the lazy brain syndrome in Nigeria.  Death and fear is not the answer to everything.

I still don't get the negatives of Ribadu.  Can someone please tell me why people are so opposed to him?  He seems to have the best team of people around him including the Progressing ACN. I am confident that he can run the country by enforcing the laws and constitution.  A reduction in corruption and following due process will improve the business climate in Nigeria.  Investments can be made and jobs will be created. His VP is a corporate titan. They both are civil.  This team in my opinion is the winning team.

ProgrammingRe: Web Service Using Java Or C# by samm(m): 1:42pm On Feb 12, 2011
I agree that the solution you posted earlier should work for you.  Like Kobojunkie said, tweak for performance and scalability.

You've solved most of your problem as far as calling a webservice to do account checks, balance enquiry and limit checks.

The remaining issue is posting to remote databases which I believe you want to do in real time. In case you were thinking of adding a webservice call in the triggers, DO NOT.

Kobojunkie:
Apart from that, simple is NOT EVIL. Matter of fact, what using a BUSINESS framework does is adding more lines of code and potential trading performance for structure or something else. you need to start simple(where you know you can), and build on it as you discover the need to.
Well stated.

HUSBANDS SHOULD TRY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TO AVOID ABUSING THEIR WIVES TALKLESS BEATING THEM. LET ME SHARE A STOTY WITH ALL:

While a man was polishing his new car, his 4 yr old son picked up stone and
scratched lines on the side of the car. In anger, the man took the

child's hand and hit it many times; not realizing he was using a wrench.
At the hospital, the child lost all his fingers due to multiple fractures.
When the child saw his father, with painful eyes he asked, 'Dad when will my
fingers grow back?' The man was so hurt and speechless; he went back to his car
and kicked it a lot of times.

Devastated by his own actions, .sitting in front of that car he looked at
the scratches; the child had written 'LOVE YOU DAD'.

The next day that man committed suicide. . .

Anger and Love have no limits; choose the latter to have a beautiful, lovely
life, Things are to be used and people are to be loved,

But the problem in today's world is that, People are used and things are
loved, During this year, let's be careful to keep this thought in

mind: Things are to be used, but People are to be loved , Be yourself, This
is the only day we HAVE. Have a nice day

Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character;
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.
I'm glad a friend forwarded this to me as a reminder.
God bless you; I hope you are having a wonderful day!

[In the 1960s Eastern Nigeria was considered as one of the fastest growing economies in the world and Aba was the focus. Most of indigenous manufacturing plants were located there.
In other to subjugate the reviving eastern economy after the war by discouraging local patronage; items produced in Aba were labelled as 'Aba made' even by those who produced nothing and were entirely dependent on oil revenue being managed by Northern officers. You need to visit Aba and see the ingenuity of the people there. People who were able to refine Jet A1 to fly improvised fighter bombers and built armored personnel carriers to withstand an army with international backing of super powers for three years.
With some of these achievements, I believe that Baifra would have been competing favourably with the likes of South Korea and Singapore and not what we are experiencing today, sentiments apart.]

Yeah right.  Biafran would have failed. The same greed and power struggle that exists today would have still existed in Biafra. And someone here believes that Ojukwu will fight evil with brutality etc, what kind of country would that be.  And because Ojukwu himself will be perfect and not fight his political enemies with the same brutality.
Biafra:  Ojukwu would have assumed the new nation is his and will not relinquish power.  Oppositions will rise, factions formed and a civil war will ensue.  Nigeria will discover oil and the economy will be booming. Biafrans will migrate to Nigeria. Biafran economy will fail, country becomes weak and war ridden.

Look at the Igbo leaders we have today. If we don't have Biafra, at least we have our own states. We have leaders at the national level. We should at least do the best we can with what we have, that might convince Abians and maybe other groups that a seperate nation will be at our best interest.  Although even at that, I don't believe it is.

This post and the responses actually shows that Nigerians now have a voice and have awoken from their slumber. Atleast we now understand the foolishness of our leaders. How can distributing rice in such fashion with police beating folks with batons and citizens collapsing be a service to our country.
It is easier to distribute rice than implement carefully thought out policies that will positively affect our citizens.  I am fast loosing hope in Jonathan.  He might not be as smart as I thought he was. I am terrified to say that Babangida might be making the most "sense".  Oh, there is Ribadu. When will these guys start campaigning.  And why the hell must we add the "Dame" title for any lady that becomes relevant in Nigeria.
Pls people we must vote for the right candidates this coming election. we must demand more from our public officers. We should critically analyze each candidate and vote with objectivity instead of emotions.
