Christianity Etc › Re: Marriage Vows: The Double Standard, Hypocrisy Of Oyedepo by Sanchez01(op): 4:45pm On Mar 29, 2019
CodeTemplar:
It is a curse in the light of the scripture that says, "let the weak say I am strong".
Life and death is in the power of the tongue and when the same bible that calls us more than conqueror knows challenges will surely come but it is another thing to accept and allow the challenge into sickness and the worse with careless utterances.
Agreed. Every confession ought to be clean and positive. But then, hold. Does it mean I am careless with my utterances and have resigned to an impending defeat just because I tell someone 'I'll be there through thick and thin'?

Because that is what basically happens with wedding vows; saying both wouldn't leave even when things don't run well. Is that what you mean by 'allowing and accepting through careless utterances'?
Christianity Etc › Marriage Vows: The Double Standard, Hypocrisy Of Oyedepo by Sanchez01(op): 4:29pm On Mar 29, 2019
In reaction to this post: https://www.nairaland.com/5099431/oyedepo-marriage-vows-better-worse#77002513

The modus operandi of the Nigerian church today is fast looking like the work of some organized mafia. I must be quick to point out that this has got nothing to do with a 'freed sheeple'. As a matter of fact, I recall a piece I wrote some three years ago on here: What The Bible Teaches About These Five Church Practices. Freeze had not even dreamt of his meaningless campaign at the time, let alone thought about it. And to those who are ready to attack, do well to read this with an open heart.

This post is in reaction to 'Pastor Oyedepo's' comment on marriage vows being a curse and in his words:
All that "for better for worse, in sickness and in health", that people recite as marriage vows is unscriptural! It is a curse!
What makes the marriage vow a curse?

Below is what the typical marriage vow looks like, in full:

I,____, take thee,_____, to be my wedded Wife/Husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I plight thee my troth.
What then makes it a curse, that it foreshadows a moment of lack or sickness or trying times in the home? Who decides whether an oath or a vow is a curse or otherwise; Oyedepo, other pastors, CAN or the Nigerian church?

Are we to say that Psalms 34:19 is a curse Christians because it foreshadows the afflictions of Christians/Believers?

Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.
- Psalms 34:19.

Did Christ curse Christians when he talked about tribulations in John 16:33?

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
- John 16:33

By not taking the 'cursed vow', does it mean a man and his wife won't experience trying times in the home or should we go ahead and believe that they have been cursed when things aren't going right in the home, despite not taking the vow?

...marriage vows is unscriptural!
I struggled last night to believe Oyedepo actually mentioned that the marriage vow is unscriptural but failed to talk about church weddings and how it is not rooted in the Scripture. For a man who is quick to point out the 'unscripturalness' of wedding vows but failed to talk about where these vows are taken the most in Nigeria, the selective amnesia tells a whole lot about what Nigerian pastors know as the truth and how best they choose to manage it, for the sake of their members, how it would affect the church and her profits and even her pastors.

Church Wedding is Unscriptural, why is Oyedepo not talking against this?

Why is Oyedepo not preaching against Church wedding, since it has no roots in the Scripture? Why do most Nigerian churches prioritize church weddings when it was never mentioned, encouraged or talked about by Christ in the New Testament? If it is unscriptural, why then does the church continually practice it and even go as far as mandating church weddings in some denominations?

Christ, the Standard, not Pastors

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith
- Hebrew 12:2

Christ will ALWAYS be the standard and the Bible, the believer's manual. I mentioned this years ago in the link above that Christ gave a template, a mode of living and how Christians should celebrate. It is a simple thing being a Christian, so long your focus is God and not on the church or the pastors. What we practice in Nigeria is nothing but religion of convenience; we find it easy to re-write God's rules and templates and set a standard different from the one that has been laid out. If we are to look at what is Scriptural and what is not, most practices exhibited by churches all over would be nothing but ideas drafted on paper and enforced in the church.

To be fair to Oyedepo, the Scripture admonishes that we dwell on good thoughts only:

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things
- Philippians 4:8

But it still does not render other parts of the Scripture that hinted on tough times useless. We proclaim we shall not die but live and end up holding on to God's Word when it is clearly stated that every man must die at some point. Who are we deceiving, that we are being sweet talked and pushed away from reality or live with the consciousness that no marriage is perfect? Was 'Mummy Faith Abiola Oyedepo' not critically ill at some point in time or was 'Mummy Foluke Adeboye' not critically ill at some point in time? I shall not spill, regardless.

I wholly agree; wedding vows hold no place in the Scripture. Heck, I have never really thought about it up until last night and I am largely indifferent about it. But if we are to be fair in our dealings, then let us come out clean and preach against church practices with no Biblical backings.

If the vow is indeed a curse, is this what is implied?

- Marriage must be without issues.
-Either partner can choose to walk away anytime since none signed up to 'suffer' or look after the other person.
-That we say sugary things all through means that is what we get.
-Those who took this vow at some point will never find it easy as they have cursed themselves.

Why we have tens of thousands of denominations is so everyone can comfortably deviate and do their thing, without having to struggle where they don't fit. If Oyedepo is smart enough to know what is Scriptural and what is not, I am somewhat confounded as to why he has not preached against church weddings.

Don't ban me oo undecided
Truth is, you can't exchange an acoustic for a keyboard. Their prices are not even close by a mile. At best, you'd need to sell the acoustic and add a reasonable amount of money to get you a keyboard that would give you some piece of mind.

Where is your location and what is your asking price?

No sane man wants to be with a woman who counters his decisions at every given opportunity, let him be the head. Your duty is to assist( we're all helpmates to them). Give him respect! Above all give him undeniable peace of mind! They function better when relaxed.

Plus, it is all about preference. A primitive woman will always be someone's sweetheart, just as a lazy woman, someone's darling. It can't be helped.

No jokes, even if Ronaldo's project clone is attempted, the clone would likely fail. He clearly pushed himself extra hard and stayed at the top through discipline and dedication.

Genetics and Biology aren't my forte but I doubt researchers would allow a clone go through half of Ronaldo's work rate.

Correct bro... Very strong guy... See how he just lifted the fridge like how he used to lift his ex girlfriend whenever he wanted to do it on the table....
I support the guy 100 %.... After a break up, our naturally needy ladies would let go of you, but would still hold on to the dividends of the former relationship such as cars, phones, laptops etc...
Since you no longer value him, you should be mature enough to return whatever he bought for you...
I always tell guys, stop doing father duties for hungry and broke girls...
There is a fundamental problem with the way some males think. It was a gift to begin with, why one would go back for it just because the relationship failed is somewhat amusing and petty.

Dude think for goodness sakes. They had unprotected sex, and he could have contracted it from her. Simple as ABC
Good grief! So you are not attributing the source of the STI to the lady he supposedly met before the girlfriend? First, the OP is a cheat and I don't necessarily have to point that out but at this point, he owes the girlfriend the truth and nothing but that, even if it would destroy whatever they have.

He should have thought of her before doing what he did. The deed has been done. Any responsible, right-thinking man would take the fall because of what went down. Has he been having unprotected sex with the girlfriend before now? Probably! Was there STI signs days after and prior to the recent one, definitely not.

He broke a condom during his act with the other lady and that tiny moment is enough for fluids exchange.

He should go for Hiv test with the other girl that gave him the gonorrhea to be on the safer side.

I dont really understand how a guy can comfortably kiss let alone have unprotected sex with a random girl with all the disease in town.
God safe us!
This emboldened makes sense but we both know doing that would be to have himself killed unnecessarily, particularly if the result comes out positive.

Bad things happen to cheats these days, and fast!

AnonymousXYZ, you shouldn't worry about Bacterial infection alone at this point. I would have advised you rush to the nearest government hospital to get a PEP but it is late already. You really should tell the other lady and also get her to run an HIV test. You need that more than she needs it right now.

Tufiakwa!
You raised salient points but in an uncouth manner. If everyone had more than enough, there wouldn't be a thread for clearance sales, let alone a reason to want to buy used items.

Plus, if diseases jump on people the way you described, a lot of us would have died from sleeping on friends', girlfriends, relatives' beds. About lice, they don't do well without blood and can't go on for long without feeding. I believe you are educated enough to know this.

A little wash and proper treatment can get those things you mentioned off any material. Coming out to criticize people in a rather condescending manner tells a whole lot about your person. If you aren't interested in buying, look away and move on. How hard can that be?
