Crime › EFCC Grabs Two Bank Officials For N3.6bn Fraud by Sanchez01(op): 4:50pm On Aug 10, 2015 |
A crack team of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday, August 6, 2015 arrested one Kato Ifrahimu Nyam and Godwin Odali, both staff of a new generation bank for conspiring to defraud the bank to the tune of N3.6bn (three billion, six million naira) with an e-payment mandate purportedly from Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The suspects, who operate as syndicate, sometime in June 2015, through their cronies submitted an e- payment mandate of N1.4bn (one billion, four hundred million naira) to Zenith bank and Access bank Plc.
The banks, sensing a foul play after noticing some abnormalities on the e-payment mandate discreetly contacted the Ministry of Agriculture for confirmation and authentication of the document. A response from the Ministry showed that, no mandate was sent to the banks. Hence, the EFCC was contacted for investigation.
While the investigation was underway, the suspects in furtherance of their dubious acts submitted another e-payment mandate of N1.398bn (one billion, three hundred and ninety eight million naira) to Zenith bank, Abuja branch though one Abiola Oloko, an accomplice. In the process, Oloko was arrested by EFCC operatives.
On arrest, Oloko confessed that, they have had several meetings to arrange and perfect “the deal”. Oloko, who claimed to be a job seeker said, he was lured into “the business” by the bank officials whom he claimed gave him an identity card of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to answer the false name “Femi Babatunde”, but with his real passport photograph affixed to it.
The suspects will be arraigned in court as soon as investigation into the matter is concluded. Source: https://efccnigeria.org/efcc/index.php/news/1457-efcc-grabs-two-bank-officials-for-n3-6bn-fraud |

Undergraduates read for a reason - to stay in the school and excel with good grades at the end of the day. But ask yourself, how many undergraduates read to understand? Most cram what they read just to put it down during exams and tests. What the OP means is reading for the fun of it and not for grades. You hardly see people get books and read for the fun of it. An average school owner in Nigeria is only out to make money rather than build lives. The internet which is supposed to increase productivity in pupils is left unused. They have failed to take advantage of what most of us never enjoyed. But then again, blame parents for the lack of reading culture among their wards. Most parents don't go through their kids' books. They hardly read in their presence and such parents are not bothered in any way. It is only when they fail woefully at the end of their academic calendar that their parents suspend the luxuries. Most kids are conditioned to read in this modern era. Some parents would be like "finish your assignment before watching Cartoon Network" or "Come out top in school and I'll get you a PS4". After conditioning, these kids become used to it such that they'll need to be motivated before they touch their books. The reading culture is fast losing its grip on Nigerians students. |

Politics › Buhari Orders EFCC To Trace Funds Stolen Under Jonathan by Sanchez01(op): 5:19am On Aug 10, 2015 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission to compile documents on funds stolen under President Goodluck Jonathan.
The PUNCH reliably learnt on Sunday that the directive was part of efforts to know the exact amount stolen under the Jonathan administration with a view to tracing them to foreign countries. It was learnt that such documents would be needed by the international community, which had expressed readiness to assist Nigeria to recover the funds.
Buhari, had in a live programme, Good Morning Nigeria, on the Nigerian Television Authority, on July 27, said the international community was willing to assist Nigeria to recover stolen money. He had said that his administration had started compiling necessary documents that would enable the international community to assist Nigeria recover the funds.
The President had stated, “We are trying to get these documents; we are getting cooperation from the international community. We are going very soon to make sure that those who perpetrated this crime against Nigeria will be faced with facts and be taken to our courts.”
It was gathered that, in a bid to carry out the presidential directive, the two agencies had started analysing petitions written against ministries, agencies and departments with a view to getting the amount stolen and those responsible for it. An operative of one of the anti-graft agencies, who confided in one of our correspondents, said the managements of the anti-graft agencies had been engrossed in a sectorial analysis of petitions received from the various government agencies. Investigation revealed that the anti-graft bodies were focusing attention on the top ministries, department and agencies which attracted massive budgetary allocations from the Federal Government under the previous administration.
The source said that the President’s directive was given shortly before his trip to the United States on July 20, 2015.
The directive was said to have triggered a flurry of activities among the anti-graft agencies. It was further gathered that the Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Larmorde, whose agency is the bigger of the two agencies, called for all the petitions and files against the various government bodies with a view to commencing holistic investigations in line with the government directive.
It was gathered that the files were allocated to the various units of the commission to commence the process of invitation, and interrogation designed to find out how much was missing and the process of prosecution. It was further gathered that the ICPC on its part had been involved in a discreet investigation of civil servants believed to have acquired a lot of properties in Abuja with stolen funds.
Several political office holders in the previous administration had been quizzed for alleged corruption while many are said to be on the waiting list of the EFCC and the ICPC for interrogation.
The source said, “I think what is happening is not sudden; the President gave an instruction to the EFCC and the ICPC to ensure that they submit how much has been stolen in the various sectors of the economy. “Since then, the Chairman of the EFCC called for all the files of the various agencies; they are quite many and they were being sifted. “The ongoing investigation is meant to give the Presidency an idea of what was stolen within the country and in some cases outside.”
When our correspondent contacted the Resident Consultant, Media and Events of the ICPC, Mr. Folu Olamiti, he said he would not comment on the story. Source: www.punchng.com/news/buhari-orders-efcc-to-trace-funds-stolen-under-jonathan/ |

Crime › Army Deserter Uses Boko Haram Guns To Rob In Bayelsa by Sanchez01(op): 4:13am On Aug 08, 2015 |
An army deserter, identified as Presido Yenabo, has been apprehended for armed robbery in Bayelsa State.
Yenabo, who claimed to have deserted the army after he was posted to Maiduguri to fight insurgency, said the rifles the police caught him with were stolen from the camp of Boko Haram insurgents.
The runaway soldier, from Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State was arrested alongside an accomplice, 22-year-old ThankGod Victor, a native of Ogoni in Rivers State. The suspects were arrested along the Sani Abacha Way in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.
The 28-year-old deserter, who was among scores of suspects paraded by the Bayelsa State Police Command recently, said he abandoned his military duties in Borno because he had problems with his hearing.
Yenabo said, “I was in the Army. I was among those fighting Boko Haram in Maiduguri, Borno State. I left the army in January this year because I had problems with my two ears. Because I could not hear again, I had to desert the Army. “I ran away with my uniforms and the guns I stole from Boko Haram fighters.”
When asked why he did not return the rifles to military authorities, he said, “I was afraid I might be arrested. We were not using them for robberies.”
Spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, confirmed that routine raids and stop-and-search operation led to the arrest of the military deserter and 49 other persons over alleged involvement in armed robbery and other violent crimes in the state.
Butswat said a Highlander SUV stolen from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was allegedly found in the possession of Yenabo and his partner in crime He said they would be charged for illegal possession of rifles, armed robbery and theft.
Meanwhile, the police also paraded John Okafor, a suspected serial killer and notorious armed robber, who hailed from Oguta in Imo State.
Though Okafor claimed that the rifles recovered from him belonged to a friend, one Preye, he confessed that was his first attempt.
Okafor said he was arrested at Igbogene area of Bayelsa State by a vigilante group and handed over to the police. According to him, the robbery he carried out was the work of the devil.
He said, “The rifle belonged to my friend, Preye. I didn’t know he is a robber. We were caught at Igbogene area of Bayelsa State. I have not robbed before. This whole thing is the work of the devil. I know God will set me free,” the suspect said.
Meanwhile, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the police in the state recently received knocks from the Civil Liberties Organisation, Bayelsa State chapter. Its Chairman, Chief Nengi James, had alleged that SARS operatives in Bayelsa carry out their duties without regard to the rule of law instead of protecting lives and property.
He had said, “The CLO, after a preliminary investigation by a special team of undercover comrades and youth leaders, discovered a shocking dimension to the illegal duties of the Bayelsa State Police through the men of the State Anti-Robbery Squad and the various divisions of the state police command.
“The group’s report showed that men of the command, on a daily basis, engage in mass arrest of innocent people charging them with “wandering” and demanding between N5,000 and N10,000 as “bail” before releasing them without paper works.
“Those that cannot pay the illegally-demanded fees are made to sleep in a congested cell with over 100 youths cramped together. They (the police) also don’t separate the minors from the mature victims.” However, these allegations were denied by the police spokesman.
Butswat said the allegations were spurious, maintaining that the command had achieved great feats through raids carried out in the state. He said, “The command wishes to state categorically that raids are operational strategies deployed to combat crime in the state.
“The police command has recorded successes in recent past through raids. For instance, policemen from the Yenagoa Division arrested one Godgift Isaac, at about 9.45pm on July 31, 2015, while conducting intensive raids, along DSP Alamieyesegha Road, Yenagoa.
“The suspect is a member of a six-man armed robbery gang, who had earlier robbed and shot one Abiodun Dauda, under his forearm and inflicted machete cuts on his forehead on July 29, 2015 along the Harbour Road, Yenagoa.
“The victim, Abiodun Dauda, who was robbed of N35,000 and two handsets, identified the suspect and the suspect admitted to the crime. The suspect identified other members of the gang as one Hunchback Nodfeh, one ThankGod (surname unknown). Upon interrogation, one Owei Prince, aka ‘Fela’ and Joel Seibokuro were arrested at a criminal hideout, while one Akpoi is still at large.”
He stated that such feats could not have been easily achieved without raids, stressing that as of present, the command had a total number of 50 armed robbery suspects in its custody. He said the suspects had been on a police wanted list, but were arrested through raiding.
Butswat equally warned policemen to desist from extorting money from members of the public in the course of discharging their official duties.
He urged members of the public to always channel complaints of police excesses to the dedicated phone numbers: 07034578208; 08032789712 as part of the measures to rid the state of errant policemen. www.punchng.com/feature/super-saturday-crime/army-deserter-uses-boko-haram-guns-to-rob-in-bayelsa/

XKZ: You are the one ascribing surface meaning to that passage. Otherwise you would have realised, from the context, that the passages does not refer to biological fathers, but 'fathers in the church', hence Jesus' reference to both the term rabbi and father. Do you call your biological father rabbi (teacher). Or when you call your pastors 'father', are you implying they married your mother? Maybe the New Living Translation will put it in perspective for you (Matt 23:8-9)
Don't let anyone call you 'Rabbi,' for you have only one teacher, and all of you are equal as brothers and sisters. And don't address anyone here on earth as 'Father,' for only God in heaven is your spiritual Father. Sir, you're digressing. The argument here is people calling their pastors/GOs "Daddy" or "Mummy", NOT RABBI. Teacher/Rabbi was not what you mentioned, but Father. You made a very grave mistake by using another version to digress because the Bible categorically said "Father". Most versions of the Scriptures are perverted and should readily be avoided during discussions. Rabbi means TEACHER and it is not wrong to call some pastors rabbi; 1 Corinthians 12: 27-28 27. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. 28. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly TEACHERS, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Imagine what your beloved NLT says about the same passage; 27.All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church: 28.first are apostles, second are prophets, third are TEACHERS, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages. Please, what then do you call those (the third in verse 28) if we have only one Rabbi/Teacher? To break down your assertion. You are the one ascribing surface meaning to that passage. Otherwise you would have realised, from the context, that the passages does not refer to biological fathers, but 'fathers in the church', hence Jesus' reference to both the term rabbi and father. Wrong! Father and Teacher are two different words. The version you used above is off bound. It only tries to justify the two being one and the same when they're not. Father, in the Hebrew sense is "Abba", not "Rabbi" which means Teacher or "My master". Hence, they cannot be the same. "Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from me; yet not what I will but what you will." (Mark 14:36) Secondly, the concept of "father in the church" started out from the NT . For example, 1 Tim 1:2 - Unto Timothy, MY SON IN THE FAITH: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. What Apostle Paul said there is what some of us, if not most, use today when we say "My Father in the Lord". Paul's son in this regard is Timothy. Again, Jesus never made reference to both Rabbi and Father because they mean different things. [quote]Like I mentioned, Jesus' mention of "Father" is in reverence and worship of a man just as God, the Father whom we're supposed to go to in worship, praise and adoration. Timothy's FATHER IN THE FAITH was Paul. Now tell me that's a crime or a sin. Please kindly follow or read up commentaries online. There are tons of them. And kindly put an end to quoting other versions of the Bible (solely) when enlightening people. It's often times unhelpful. Christians are not robots. You have the right and power to pray to the Holy Spirit for better understanding. This is why the Bible charges us to "study to show thyself approved unto God". Shalom! |

XKZ: Did you read Matthew 23:9? Matt 23:9 - "And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven." One question? What do we call the man who married our mother and made her pregnant? Father, right? If we're to look at the passage you gave denotatively, then almost everyone on earth has disobeyed Christ and we're hell bound for call someone "father". Reading and ascribing surface meaning to most of the Scripture is not ideal. What that passage means is that we should not put an earthly being in an exalted position of reverence just as we put God, the Father. The implication of this is tantamount to idolatry because we have just one Father. The passage best works against the Catholic church and other denominations who confess their "sins" to the 'father', one who in turn tells them to go and sin no more. Again, Jesus' teaching in Matt 23:9 refers to men who have been exalted and put (in our hearts) in the place of God. Please search for Adam Clarkes' commentary concerning this particular verse. |

At least I have someone I've been calling that name from day one. The sin is carrying their pictures or inscriptions about and using it as a medium to getting to God. |

XKZ: Not only Catholics but everyone who puts up any "picture of Jesus" or the Holy Spirit or God for that matter. Most of those who do so do so ignorantly. However, the descriptions of Jesus in the three synoptic gospels are what most Christians have come to picture Jesus to be (which is right). The problem however is "setting" the picture, image, sculpting or 'representation' is idolatry. The picture you attached is not in any way idolatory; that's only an illustration of Matt 14:26-31. Concerning the Holy Spirit. Almost every church using 'a white dove' is right because one of the descriptions of the Holy Spirit is as a dove, in some places, wind, some other places a still small voice and sometimes 'Spirit'. I've never heard of a church worship the Holy Spirit or set an image in its place. Note: Illustrations are not bad but sculpting, having an image as a 'representation' of Christ or God is. |

Yet,more billions had been borrowed after that one...APCshit are just full of hypocrites whose only job is to see to it that their #500 daily allawee is not hampered anything. No wonder you will see dem defending useless and cruelness governor that fails in his responsibility. Not only is it hypocrisy but that of "let him who is without sin be the first to cast the stone." What APC lack is decorum and it's quite unfortunate because they forget so soon how some of their states ran to the FG for help. If APC wants to play by the offsetting-debts-before-borrowing-another rule then it's quite unfortunate because they lead while others follow. Lagos, Edo and Osun are typical case studies. |

It noted that houses and shops were demolished while project were awarded for N3.2bn, but residents were shocked that the contractor ended up only “replacing street lights and road dividers.” N3.2bn just for street lights and road dividers? I comment my reserve. Unfortunately, some APC states have either done close to this or more. Lagos' debts were not incurred at once. The APC should leave Mimiko alone and not play politics with the people of Ondo state. Cc Lalasticlala Ishilove |
