Politics › ‘Why We Reject Zakari As Acting INEC Chair’ – PDP by Sanchez01(op): 2:14pm On Jul 04, 2015
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it would continue to demand the removal of the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs. Amina Zakari as resolved in its 403rd National Working Committee (NWC) meeting, despite unwarranted attacks on its officials by the presidency.

The party said it is privy to the fact that “Mrs. Zakari who has a strong relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari and a very prominent APC Northwest governor is collaborating with the ruling party to post Resident Electoral Commissioners of its choice to Kogi and Bayelsa ahead of the forthcoming governorship elections in those states.”

The PDP also alerted of moves to use the period of Mrs. Zakari’s stay as head of the commission to tinker with electoral personnel and materials for the two states in favour of the APC.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh in a statement on Saturday said “President Buhari, in appointing Mrs. Zakari, failed to take into cognizance the moral call to detach himself from the operation of the electoral body thereby completely eroding the independence of the commission.

The party pointed out that the issue at stake is not that of Mrs. Zakari’s competence or performance in office but the fact of nepotism and her closeness to the President and some key APC leaders, which calls into question the independence of the electoral body under her.

“We want Nigerians to know that with this appointment, INEC has been stripped of its independence and can no longer command the confidence and respect of the citizens and all other critical stakeholders in the nation’s electoral process.

“We however find it astonishing, discouraging and disheartening that the spokesperson of the President will address Nigerians and lie to the entire citizenry that Mrs. Zakari never had any relationship with the President or an APC Governor in the Northwest. This is the height of deception coming from the respected office of the President of our dear country.

“We ask, is the spokesperson of the President, oblivious of the public fact that the Acting Chairman of INEC was once a staff of Afri-Project Consortium, a company well associated with the President?

“Is he by any means feigning ignorance of the fact that Mrs. Zakari also worked in the past as Secretary of Health and Human Services, Social Development and later, that of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Federal Capital Development Authority, then under a current APC governor of the Northwest?

“How much of Mrs. Zakari’s roles in the last general elections does the spokesperson of the President, who has just been appointed, know to warrant his brazen defence?

“Even where we concede to the worn-out argument that the President has the powers to appoint any person he deems fit as the INEC Chairman, does moral obligation not demand that in doing so he should take into cognizance the sensitivity of the position? Otherwise he can as well appoint his wife or brother as the electoral umpire on an argument of merit.

“Whilst the PDP might not be opposed to Mrs. Zakari becoming one out of the numerous national electoral commissioners to be so appointed, we completely reject her being an executive chairman who takes major decisions in an independent electoral commission while having a strong relationship with the President and a prominent APC Northwest governor.

“Indeed, never in the history of Nigeria has there been an executive chairman of the electoral body with such strong relationship with the president of the country.

“If therefore the stance and choice of words of the Presidential spokesperson, which apparently fall short of the civility of a democratic setting, reflect in any way those of President Buhari, then there is serious question on his credentials as a converted democrat.

“Conversely, we caution that presidential spokespersons in representing the President, must note that the psychology of their personal sudden flight to political limelight should not engineer a trauma of monumental deceit to our great nation”, the PDP said.

Insisting that Mrs. Zakari must be removed, the PDP said having in the last 16 years reformed the nation’s electoral system to an enviable status that is being commended by the international community, it cannot sit back and watch too early in the day, its gradual destruction by partisan interest.

The party therefore urged Nigerians, especially key stakeholders in the democratic process “to rise above sectional, religious, gender and partisan biases and put the independence of INEC, the credibility of the electoral process and the overall interest of the nation above every other consideration in their comments and views on the appointment.”

The PDP stressed that as long as the Acting Chairman remains in office, it would not recognize the electoral body as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) but as the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

Education › Re: My Name Is OR My Names Are,which Is Grammatically Correct? by Sanchez01(m):
elego1:
My name IS buhari.
my names ARE Muhammadu Buhari.

you use 'is' if u wanna say only ur first name or ur last name and u use 'are' if u wanna say ur full name.
If am wrong pls quote me.
uchennamani:
They are both correct depending on the context in which it was used. My name is Uche but my names are Uche Nnamani. When asked his name during the Oputa Panel hearing by the chairman; Whole Soyinka replied:'my name is Wole'. The chairman became angry and Prof. Soyinka told him that he should asked him his names. Grammatically, the subject must agree with the verb. The noun subjects 'name or names' must go with its verb equivalents 'is or are' respectively. it is wrong to say ' My name is Uche Nnamani or my name are Uche.'
Unfortunately, both of you are wrong. There is no such thing as "my names are...". Here lemme explain;

1. The question is "What IS your NAME?": Note, the question did not come with the plural BrE+ form which in this regard would be "ARE". Hence, the question is directed to a singular form or entity (which is one person) and the answer would be singular as well. Therefore "My name is Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is most correct".

2. "Name" is a Noun but one's name is singular: This is quite complicated but simple at the same time. A name is an identity by which something is known or described as.

So, when we say "Names", we refer to several others but this is the tricky part; regardless of how many names you bear or carry, you are ONE person. Hence,, we refer to you as a singular entity and not belonging to the plurality class. Hermaphrodites who are even known to possess both male and female features are not pluralized.

Bearing the above in mind, it would imply that the several "NAMES" you have all belong to "ONE" person which is YOU. This is why it is proper to say "My name is Goodluck Ebele Jonathan".

NB: Goodluck+Ebele+Jonathan are all names but they belong to ONE person, therefore it cannot be pluralized during introduction.

Finally, instead of saying "My names are" just say "My full name is..."
E.g;

Customs inspector: Would you please state your name?

Passenger: I'm Goodluck Jonathan

Inspector: Excuse me, sir. Would you please state your full name? / Would you please state your name in full?

Passenger: Sorry! My full name is Goodluck Ebele Jonathan

Politics › Sahara Reporters Will Not Get Away With It” – Like Mind Senators Cry Over Saraki by Sanchez01(op): 8:04am On Jul 01, 2015
The senators of Like Minds have accused Sahara Reporters, an online news agency of conniving with some Nigerian politicians to orchestrate campaign of calumny against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

LEADERSHIP claim two of the factional Senators who spoke under the condition of anonymity condemned the recent online media publications on Saraki.

Sahara Reporters released personal documents of the Senate President on social media platforms on Sunday before publishing a new “investigative”, describing Saraki as a “petty thief”.

The Senators said the recent perfectly executed attacks on the character of the Senate President has convinced them that Sahara Reporters was acting the script of a certain politician from the South-West

One of the senators of Like Minds vowed that there was no way the Sahara Reporters will be allowed to get away with such recklessness.

They said they were not surprised that Sahara Reporters “is being partisan since its operators are now physically in Nigeria fraternizing with the political class instead of engaging in investigative journalism that it used to be known for while operating from New York”.

The senators claimed that the online media published a fake document maligning the character of Saraki and even went as far as publishing an unverified bio data page of an International passport allegedly belonging to the Senate President on a social media.

They said that appropriate action is being taken on the matter and all legal avenues will be considered.

Speaking on the development, Bamikole Omishore, the Special Assistant on New Media to the Senate President confirmed that they were aware of the campaign of calumny against their principal from the online media.

Saraki has been at the receiving end of several political analysts and critics after “betraying” his party and its leaders.

Just last month, the Senate President was seen in Ogun state at the home of former president, Olusegun Obasanjo in order to calm frayed nerves within the APC.

Politics › '30 Days Of Motion Without Movement, We Must Pray For Buhari' - PDP by Sanchez01(op): 5:49pm On Jun 28, 2015
The People's Democratic Party (PDP), in statement on Sunday by its Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, says it becomes necessary to pray for the Buhari-led federal government because of what it termed as 30 days of motion without movement.

The PDP says it is deeply worried that the President, who promised to unveil his cabinet two weeks after his inauguration, has not been able to decide on key appointments such as ministers, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), a chief of staff and advisers in key sectors of the economy.

Mr Metuh added that the situation is taking its toll on the economy, which has according to him in the last 30 days, witnessed unprecedented decline with a terrifying crippling of foreign and domestic investments including activities in the money and capital market sectors.

The PDP also criticized the President in the handling of counter insurgency since assuming office.

It said that apart from the directive to relocate the counter terrorism command center to Borno State and seeking assistance from foreigners, no other concrete step has been taken in the fight against insurgency.

“Instead, the anti-terrorism effort has completely lost steam in the last 30 days, with insurgents, who had already been pushed to the verge of surrender in the Sambisa forest by the Goodluck Jonathan administration, now surging back and spreading into the country,” he said.

Read the full statement below:

After a careful evaluation of the first 30 days of President Muhammadu Buhari and All Progressives Congress (APC)’s administration, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) notes that it has become obvious that Nigerians need to join hands in prayers to save the government from further inaction and dithering.

The party said the call for prayers has become necessary given the fact that the administration is finding it difficult to locate its bearing and even take off and face the challenges of governance at the center resulting in 30 days of all motion and no movement, a scenario that does not augur well for the polity.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statement on Sunday said that the enormity of the confusion surrounding the government and party in the last one month makes it imperative for Nigerians to pray as the success or failure of the Buhari administration will not only affect the President and his party but also the entire nation.

“We urge Nigerians to join hands in prayers and offer useful suggestions to President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC because with what we have seen in the last 30 days, the present administration is finding it very difficult to get its bearings right while showing no inclination towards implementing its numerous campaign promises for which they were voted into office at the center.

“We are deeply worried that the President who promised to unveil his cabinet two weeks after his inauguration, has not been able to decide on key appointments such as ministers, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), a Chief of Staff and advisers in key sectors of the economy.

“This is more so as the delay has brought government business in ministries, departments and agencies to a dangerous standstill with coordination of important policies vested on ministers and the SGF now in tatters while the system drifts. This situation also creates loopholes through which overzealous persons around that President can connive with unscrupulous elements in the bureaucracy to syphon public resources in addition to possibly misleading the President to violate due process by spending beyond and outside his statutory limits.

“The situation is taking its toll on the economy sector, which has in the 30 days witnessed unprecedented decline with a terrifying crippling of foreign and domestic investments including activities in the money and capital market sectors. Under President Buhari, the stock market has lost over N238 billion while the All-Share Index fell by 849.87 basis points as at June 19.

“In security, apart from the directive to relocate the counter terrorism command center to Borno state and seeking assistance from foreigners, no other concrete step has been taken in the fight against insurgency which the President in his April 22, 2015 CNN interview promised to end within his two months in office.

“Instead, the anti-terrorism effort has completely lost steam in the last 30 days, with insurgents, who had already been pushed to the verge of surrender in the Sambisa forest by the Goodluck Jonathan administration, now surging back and spreading into the country.

“In this regard, we urge the President to confront insurgency and issues of national security with all the vigour they deserve while calling for restrain from actions capable of destroying the fabrics of security intelligence. We also urge for adequate respect for all organs of internal security such as the Directorate of State Security (DSS), which is answerable to the Nigerian state and as such should not be publicly ridiculed by an aide of the President.

“In the same vein, we are disturbed by the ominous signals emanating from the atrocious attempt by the APC to undermine and appropriate the federal legislature resulting in the disruption of lawful proceedings and forced closure of the National Assembly, the symbol of our collective national identity as a democratic state. In this direction, we urge the Presidency and the APC to imbibe democratic tenets and respect the independence of that arm of government.

“Finally, while we remind the President and the APC that their campaign promises are bonds which must be fulfilled, we urge him to use the next ten days to set up his government by naming his ministers, the SGF and advisers in critical sectors as Nigerians did not vote for a sole administrator but for a democratic government”.

Signed:

Chief Olisa Metuh

Politics › Identity Crisis: "Stop Mentioning Me" Tweep Cries Out Over NASS Saga by Sanchez01(op): 11:35am On Jun 27, 2015
Following the recent showdown on Thursday, Nigerians registered their displeasure over the fracas in the 8th National Assembly, which many considered as shameful.

Lawmakers were seen trading blows and yelling at themselves during the plenary session of the House. The highlight of the day which was to announce the names of principal leaders of the House of Assembly was forfeited after trouble brewed.

Apparently thinking that @nass was the handle of the Nigerian National Assembly, angry Nigerians mentioned the handle in their diverse tweets posted to the Twitter network, expressing their disappointments on the unruly behaviour of the lawmakers.

However, there was a little twist when Nasser al-Saadi a man from Qatar cried out that Nigerians should stop mentioning him over an issue he knows nothing about.

Nasser apparently had been getting mentions even during the wardrobe allowance uproar but became unbearable after the fracas at the National Assembly.

It took the intervention of some Nigerians on twitter to explain the mix-up: that some people were mentioning @nass instead of using #nass hashtag.

Nasser later joined in the conversation and was seen cracking jokes via his Twitter handle.

The Speaker of the 8th National Assembly, Yakubu Dogara apologized to Nigerians and charged the lawmakers to act in the interest of those who voted them into office. The Speaker however adjourned the plenary session to the 21st of July, 2015.

Below are some of Nasser al-Saadi's tweets:

https://www.fctpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Jega-1024x678.jpg
Following the expiration of their five-year tenure, Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, who hails from Kebbi state, (North West geo-political zone) is to bow out of the Commission next week.

Precisely, Professor Jega, alongside with six National Commissioners, will be leaving office on Tuesday, June 30, 2015.

The other six National Commissioners whose tenures expire on the same day are: Col. M.K. Hammanga (Rtd), Adamawa state, (North East); Dr Ishmael Jikiri Igbani, Rivers state, (South South); Prof. Lai Olurode, Osun state, (South West); Dame Gladys Nne Nwafor, Abia state, (South East); Mrs Thelma Amata Iremiren, Delta state, (South South); and Engr. Dr. Nuru A. Yakubu, OON, Yobe state, (North East).

They were all inaugurated by former President Goodluck Jonathan on June 30, 2010.

Four other National Commissioners are to leave the Commission in July and August this year. They are: Dr. Abdulkadir S. Oniyangi, OFR, Kwara state, (North Central), whose tenure will expire on 21st July 2015; Mrs Amina Bala Zakari, Jigawa state, (North West); whose tenure will also expire on 21st July 2015; Dr Chris O. Iyimoga, Nasarawa state, (North Central); whose tenure will expire on 11th August 2015; and Amb. (Dr.) Mohammed Ahmad Wali, Sokoto state, (North West) whose tenure will also expire on 11th August 2015.

In the meantime, the tenures of sixteen Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) have expired and they have left the Commission last week. A gala night was held in their honour last week Thursday at the Le Meridien Hotel, Uyo, Akwa Ibom. They are: Ahmad Makama, Bauchi state; Haliru A. Tambuwal, Sokoto state; Abdullahi Umar Danyaya, Niger state; Abubakar U.G. Wara, Kebbi state; Mr. Mike Igini, Delta state; Prof. Selina Omagha Oko, Ebonyi state; Hussaini Ahmed Mahuta, Katsina state; Dr. A.L. Ogunmola, Oyo state; Alh. Ibrahim Zarewa, Kano state; Prof. Tukur Sa’ad, Adamawa state; Dr. Emmanuel Onucheyo, Kogi state; Kassim Gana Gaidam, Yobe state; Mr. Timothy Ibitoye, Osun state; Amb. Dr. Rufus Akeju, Lagos state;Prof. C.E. Onukaogu, Abia state; and Ibrahim Bagobiri Marafa, Zamfara state.

But even as the Commission is being depleted, following the progressive expiration of the tenures of National Commissioners, its (INEC’s) work will continue apace and uninterrupted because it can always form a quorum. Section 159 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) states:

(1.) The quorum for a meeting of any of the bodies established by section 153 of this Constitution shall be not less than one-third of the total number of members of that body at the date of the meeting.

(2.) A member of such a body shall be entitled to one vote, and a decision of the meeting may be taken and any act or thing may be done in the name of that body by a majority of the members present at the meeting.

(3.) Whenever such body is assembled for a meeting, the Chairman or other person presiding shall, in all matters in which a decision is taken by vote (by whatever name such vote may be called) have a casting as well as a deliberative vote.

(4.) Subject to its rules of procedure, any such body may act or take part in any decision notwithstanding any vacancy in its membership or the absence of any member.

What has the Jagaban of Borgu did to them for him to deserve this nonsense?

If Tinubu did not support the merger where would they have gotten that position, David Mark would have been automatically the President.
The truth here is that the APC faction is 3s; Tinubu's faction, Northern/Atiku's (which is responsible for foiling Tinubu's grand plan at the Red House and HoR and making sure Tinubu is restricted to the South West), and the Saraki group which has its eyes set on 2019.

The Atiku/Northern faction would do anything to limit Tinubu. OBJ is already powerful and another powerhouse from the South West would be the deadliest mistake ever committed.

I like Tinubu but it would be better if he's limited. Too much power would idolize the Tinubu family for life, which is bad for Nigerian politics.
Politics › House Of Rep Leadership Crisis: Speaker, Yakubu Dogara Adjourns Plenary by Sanchez01(op): 1:26pm On Jun 25, 2015
Trouble brewed in the House of Representatives on Thursday, June 25 over Leadership positions in the House.

The plenary session was halted after the House was divided over whom would emerge as for the leadership positions.

Members of the House went agog just when the Speaker was about to call the names of the leaders to fill in the positions in the House.

Attempts were made to cart away with the Mace by some members of the House before it was taken into the inner office of the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara.

Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila of Surulere constituency was seen talking with the Speaker as the disorderly house continued with chants and arguments from all sides.

A sided group of the House chanted the name of the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara to show their support while a seemingly different group chanted "on party supremacy we stand".

The fracas lasted for almost an hour before sanity was brought back alive and the House was reverted to the meeting of the day.

The obviously disappointed Speaker of the House of rep was re-ushered in with an applause as he spoke;

"We must disagree to agree but we must do so in the interest of the House and Nigerians," the Speaker paused as applause rented the air. The Speaker continued;

"We are very fortunate; let me remind us that we are a very fortunate class. We were chosen out of over 170 million people in Nigeria. We should be grateful to our constituency. We have promised change and Nigerians expect us to talk about what affects them most, security, job creation, poverty alleviation among other things. As long as this house is divided, we cannot achieve that. I plead of us as honourable members, as leaders, all hands must be on deck to enable us achieve the desired unity. That is the responsibility we owe. We promise, as leaders to look into what led to this today and resolve this as quickly."

Meanwhile the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, announced the names of Principal officers at the Senate plenary today. Senator Muhammed Ali Ndume was named the Majority Leader while Bala Na'Allah was announced Deputy Majority Leader. Senator Lawan-led faction objected to the announcement of the Senate President.

The Speaker adjourned the meeting to the 21st of July, 2015.

Politics › Nigeria Picks Kogi, Akwa Ibom For Nuclear Power Plants by Sanchez01(op): 3:46pm On Jun 20, 2015
Nigeria has selected two sites for the construction of its planned nuclear power plants, as Africa’s biggest economy tries to end decades of electricity blackouts that have blighted its growth.

Russia’s state-owned Rosatom, which has been in talks with Nigeria over the nuclear plants, on Friday confirmed two sites had been selected in Africa’s most populous nation and said they would have a total of four reactors.

Neither side would say where the sites were, but a source at Nigeria’s nuclear agency said the sites will be in Akwa Ibom state, in southeast Nigeria, and Kogi state, in the central northern part of the country.

Nigeria, with a population of around 170 million, has installed power capacity that fluctuates between around 6,000 MW to just over 7,000 MW, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria, with 80 percent of its power plants fired by gas.

By comparison, South Africa’s capacity is almost seven times greater for a population less than a third as big.

Africa’s biggest economy has no experience in developing and operating nuclear plants but has small reactors producing around 30 KW for research, Franklin Erepamo Osaisai, chief executive of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission, said on its website.

One nuclear power plant costs between $5 billion to $8 billion, a source at Rosatom said. Nigeria has not yet said how it plans to fund the construction, a key question given its finances have taken a hit after a slump in the price of oil, its main export.

Politics › Global Peace Index: Nigeria Ranks 36 In Africa, 151 In The World by Sanchez01(op): 11:53am On Jun 20, 2015

Nigeria placed thirty six in Africa in the 2015 Global Peace Index (GPI) and also placed 151 worldwide out of 162 countries sampled, scoring 2.91 in the 2015 Global Peace Index.

The most peaceful nation in Africa is Mauritius which made an improvement of 0.013 points which also placed 25th worldwide.

The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) which conducts the annual survey, is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit think-tank dedicated to shifting the world’s focus to peace as a positive, achievable and tangible measure of human well-being and progress.

The index is composed of 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources and ranks 162 independent states, covering 99.6 percent of the world’s population.

It gauges global peace using three broad themes: the level of safety and security in the society, the extent of domestic and international conflict and the degree of militarization.

The GPI puts Nigeria national cost of violence at $70,551,273,870 and provided a broad sectoral outlook of the various sectors of the economy or activities that impact on peace building.

In relation to political terrorism and political instability, Nigeria scored 3.3 out of total points of 5.0 while access to weapons in Ghana, the nation scored a massive 4.0 out of 5.0

Nigeria scored 5.0 out of 5 and violent crime in deaths from internal conflict as it also scored 5.0 out of 5 regarding violent demonstrations.

In relation to intensity of internal conflict, Ghana had 5.0 out of 5.0 just as she scored 5.0 out of 5 in perception of criminality.

The security of officers and the police scored 2.1, weapons importation ranked 1.0 out of 5 while terrorism impact scored 4.5 out of 5. Deaths from internal conflict scored 4.0 out of 5.

Military expenditure score stood at 1.1 out of 5; displaced people scored 1.5 out of 5.0 with neighbouring countries relations fixed at 2.0 out of 5.

Terrorism Impact scored a massive 4.5 out of 5, while UN peacekeeping funding is fixed at 2.7 out of 5.

Sub-Saharan Africa’s score improved in 2015, albeit fractionally, putting it further ahead of regions including Russia and Eurasia, South Asia and MENA.

This overall improvement makes sharp variations in the country performance, however; sub-Saharan states registered some of the sharpest score changes, both positive and negative.

For example, Guinea-Bissau and Cote d’Ivoire registered the largest score improvements worldwide.

Niger is one of a number of sub-regional states to have felt the impact of terrorism due to Boko Haram, the Nigeria-based Islamist terrorist group, which launched a number of fatal attacks in Niger in early 2015.

The report noted that given the porous borders, stretched resources and regional cooperation, which have far proved ineffective, Niger would struggle to contain the threat posed by Boko Haram.

The most peaceful countries are Iceland, Denmark and Austria. The countries that made the biggest improvements in peace over the last year, generally benefited from the ending of wars with neighbours and involvement in external conflict. The biggest improvers were: Guinea-Bissau, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt and Benin.

Syria remains the world’s least peaceful country, followed by Iraq and Afghanistan. The country that suffered the most severe deterioration in peace was Libya, which now ranks 149th of 162 countries.

Ukraine suffered the second largest deterioration: following a popular revolution which brought down the administration of Viktor Yanukovych, Russia moved to destabilise the country, meaning it scored poorly on organised conflict indicators.

The 2015 Global Peace Index is the ninth edition since its inception.

The Deputy Governor who was plying the road at the time of the accident asked her vehicle to be stopped while she ran to the accident scene.

Politics › The International Criminal Court And Its Lust For African Leaders by Sanchez01(op): 6:20pm On Jun 17, 2015
The week begins with news of the failed arrest of the President of Sudan while he was attending the AU Summit held in Sandton, Johannesburg South Africa.

Omar al-Bashir has been linked to war crimes in his homeland of Sudan and is said to be responsible for the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives. The International Criminal Court, which is an EU funded and EU-led legal entity, instructed the South African government to ensure that Omar al-Bashir does not leave the country during his brief visit over the weekend of the 13th and 14 of June 2015.

The North Gauteng High Court granted an order for the arrest of Omar al-Bashir while he was in South Africa but the authorities failed to arrest him and he is said to have flown out of the country on the morning of Monday the 15th of June 2015.

This recent development raises many questions about the relevance of the International Criminal Court. One question is if it has been established for the sole purpose of targeting African leaders. It is a well known fact that a great number of African States who are signatories to the ICC are expected to give their cooperation in return for aid and trade advantages.

Sudan is known to have foregone Billions of Dollars in aid as it does not cooperate with the ICC.

South Africa is also a signatory to the ICC and failing to arrest al-Bashir could have far reaching effects for this young African democracy. Reports that South African troops deployed in Khartoum, Sudan have been held hostage have been rubbished by the South African National Defense Force.

On the other hand, Rubert Mugade has come out in defense of the decision by the South African government not to arrest al-Bashir and even lashed out at the ICC. He has been quoted as saying that the ICC is not welcome on the African continent.

“This is not the headquarters of the ICC; we don’t want it in this region at all,”

— Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe (At the African Summit)

The coming weeks and months will reveal what this recent failed attempt to arrest al-Bashir means for the sovereignty of African governments and the autonomy of the African Union. It will also come be to be seen just how the ICC under the control of the European Union, a powerful economic bloc, will react to the lack of cooperation shown by the South African government.

I'm sorry to admit that your friend is right. No one is asking you to be sad, sulky or moody just because he owes you. Debtors are of two types; those who don't have shame and those who do. He belongs to the first. People like him would borrow and would readily not think of returning what they owed. True, a may be a friend but your money could get lost on the foundation of friendship.
