My Barcelona prediction this season.

1. Ballon d'Or is readily open with this performance. Messi and Ronaldo will have to prove themselves in less than 3 months for the prize.

2. Luis Enrique will be sacked this season. There are no two ways about itgrin

Politics › Akpabio Plotting To Stop Buhari’s Anti-graft War – APC by Sanchez01(op): 7:02am On Aug 14, 2015
The All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State has accused the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, of plotting to stop President Muhammadu Buhari’s war against corruption.

The party faulted Akpabio’s statement that the current war against corruption lacked transparency and fairness to all, and that Buhari appears to be fighting his political adversaries.

Speaking in Uyo on Thursday, the state Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr. Ita Awak, stated that Akpabio was trying to use the Peoples Democratic Party’s Senate caucus to frustrate the war against corruption.

He added that the group would spare no effort in ensuring that the anti-corruption crusade of Buhari failed.

According to him, Akpabio is among the people who had profited from high-level corruption, adding that he would soon be exposed by the battle against graft.

He said, “We, therefore, recall that some very powerful forces and influential personalities in our country sponsored the palace coup that ousted the military regime of the then Major General Muhammadu Buhari and truncated our national renaissance against corruption in 1985.

“It is, therefore, very worrisome to us that the current war that the APC government of President Buhari has begun in 2015 may suffer a grave setback unless the dark agents of corruption who have held sway, especially in the last eight years, are contained and brought to justice.

“With Akpabio’s false allegations that the current war against corruption lacks transparency, fairness to all and appears to be aimed at political adversaries, we are troubled that Akpabio is strategically using his present position as the Minority Leader to galvanise that segment of the powerful elite in our country who are determined to ensure that the Buhari’s war against corruption fails.

Awak, in a petition dated July 8, 2015 titled, “Petition against corruption and the unbecoming conduct of INEC REC, Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Austin Okojie and other INEC officers,” said the party had reasons to invite the Director General of the Department of State Services and the Inspector-General of Police in view of what happened.

According to him, INEC officials should be impartial umpires.

He said the electoral body should not degenerate to the level of causing irreparable damage to ballot papers used for the April 11, 2015 governorship election in the state.

He said, “Under Okojie’s watch, hundreds of thousands of ballot papers used for the governorship election of April 11, 2015, were physically mutilated beyond redemption, making it absolutely impossible for the APC forensic experts to scan them for forensic examination.

“In our view, this deliberate and callous destruction of material evidence, in this instance, hundreds of thousands of ballot papers used for the governorship election of April 11, 2015, was criminal in all material particular and so, naturally, warranted the involvement of the DSS and the police.”

I think some of these cultural rights and traditions should be done away with or be le think ss intense with.

The world is outgrowing this, why trying to be stuck to the past and not embracing the future?

Ya, we need to observe the culture and tradition, not to the extent of total paralyzing of commercial activities
You know, as much as I don't support the killing of others just because someone passed on, our culture is worth protecting (maybe they modify some aspects).

The world is outgrowing nothing. China, despite boasting a wealthy economy, is highly cultural. We cannot totally take some parts away just because it restricts certain things. Believe me, the burial of the Ooni would witness the presence of tourists who would want to see how events play out during a king's burial.

Final, our maintenance culture as a people is very bad. Majority of the so-called museums around are filled with different types of rocks, rather than pictures of past way of life that depicts how we used to live.

Culture is still important to us, no matter how vain we may think it is.

Please lets have honest discussion about this topic.
We're already having a discussion, you need not copy the mods.

To the honest part: As much as Barcanista's threads (the ones he gets to poke at the government and not the ones concerning cloning monikers) are interesting reads, let me be quick to say that I don't see him surviving the pressures of opinion articles on prints for several reasons.

1. A typical Barcanista thread is riddled with links to back his claims (which is good). The same is useless in prints. You can make references but not put sources since it's not a school projectgrin

2. Print columnists, though could sometimes exhibit partiality, are often "truth writers"; something which Barcanista is not. His articles may be factual on the surface but it does not really strike the typical balance print columnists would touch.

3. Unlike Femi Aribisala, Gbenga Omotosho, Sam Omatseye and a host of others, Barcanista's followers are restricted to Nairaland (I stand to be corrected), which is not the issue. The question really is "how many of his followers would pick a print brand to read his piece"? (Remember, print columnists are also expected to affect the sales of papers).

4. Barcanista may not be taken seriously because he had duly criticized Jonathan's government before switching to criticizing Buhari's government. While many may brand him as money-oriented, I believe Barcanista is ordained to play opposition. Imagine someone who had been criticizing an incumbent with the assurance that he (Jonathan) would be unseated, only for him to switch before Buhari won the elections.grin

5. Columnists are not swift to assume. Barcanista lacks this. A typical Gbenga Omotosho would never conclude his piece; rather, he would leave it open so that his readers would only be left with ambiguity, unlike the latter who opens a thread with this topic; "Three months in Office: Buhari is a liar - Barcanista".grin

6. His personal blog lacks readership and innovation, what values do you expect him to add to a print media if he cannot handle his own personal propertyhuh

I'm tired abeg, I could go on and on though. He's not just ready yet. Maybe in the nearest future, but obviously not now. Punch, The Nation, et al still have a host of Professors they're yet to feature (trust me, I know this) on opinion...

Politics › US Jails Nigerian 22 Years For Helping Al-qaeda by Sanchez01(op): 1:24am On Aug 14, 2015
THE rising rate of young Nigerians’ involvement in global terrorism was again underscored by the sentencing of a 35-year-old Lawal Babafemi to 22 years’ imprisonment in the United States for aiding an affiliate of Al-Qaeda in Yemeni.

Babafemi, sentenced on Wednesday by a US District Judge, John Gleeson, in Brooklyn, was accused of receiving weapons training from Al-Qaeda and writing rap lyrics for the terrorist organisation.

He had pleaded guilty, in April 2014, to providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organisation, Al-Qaeda, in the Arabian Peninsula. He said he whipped up enthusiasm for the terror outfit in his native land and lobbyied Muslims to join its Yemeni branch.

He collected $9,000 from the late Al-Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki to recruit for Al-Qaeda on his behalf, prosecutors said.

But in appealing for leniency, Babafemi told the court on Wednesday that the two years he had spent in American prisons had cleansed him of Jihadi impulses and that he had renounced religious violence completely.

“I’m extremely sorry for anything I have done against the United States. I want to say that I denounce Al-Qaeda and their activities,” he said.

His attorney, Lisa Hoyes, noted that Babafemi grew up in grinding poverty and that he was brutally tortured by Nigerian officials before his extradition to the US.

She also cited his emphatic rejection of Al-Qaeda’s ideology and pointed to a sparkling record of behaviour while in prison.

“He’s learned that Americans are people like him,” she said in asking for a sentence of 15 years, well below federal sentencing guidelines.

But federal prosecutor Zainab Ahmad rejected his claims of ideological rehabilitation and said he was simply trying to shave time off of his sentence.

She noted that Babafemi willfully made the “perilous” trek from Nigeria to Yemen in order to pursue his al Qaeda dreams.

Prosecutors had sought up to 30 years’ imprisonment for Babafemi, who was extradited from Nigeria in 2013 after being arrested several times two years earlier on local terrorism charges.

Al-Qaeda is an organisation of Islamic militants that has declared “holy war” on Americans, Jews and their allies.

The organisation was suspected to have caused thousands of deaths in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the US and other attacks around the world.

According to the US authorities, from January 2010 to August 2011, Babafemi travelled from Nigeria to Yemen twice to meet with leaders of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, known as AQAP.

During his time with the group, Babafemi, who went by the name “Ayatollah Mustapha,” was said to have worked on the AQAP’s media operations, including its magazine Inspire.

According to statements he gave the US authorities, Babafemi was ordered by al-Awlaki, an American, to go back to Nigeria and recruit other members. Awlaki had since been killed in one of the US attacks.

Babafemi’s sentence came on the heels of the arrest in India of two Nigerian youths suspected to be on their way to Iraq to join the terrorist organisation, Islamic State.

The two youngsters – Imran Kabeer and Sani Jamiliu – were arrested along the India-Pakistan border after scaling a barbed wire fence near the international border, where they were handed over to the Punjab Police.

According to the Indo-Asian News Services, the two Nigerians, aged between 24 and 25, from Kano State, told Indian officials that they wanted to go to Pakistan and later to Iraq. The youths, the report said, did not possess valid travel documents to enter Pakistan.

They were said to have arrived in Sikh from Delhi in a hired taxi. The IANS noted that the duo argued with the taxi driver, “hoodwinked him and drove away his Swift Dzire car and arrived at the integrated checkpoint at Attari.”

Since the youths claimed their final destination was Iraq, security officials said they could be going to join the Islamic State terror outfit.

The ISIS – Islamic State of Iraq and Syria – began in 2004 as al Qaeda in Iraq, before rebranding as ISIS. Like the Al-Queda, ISIS is also anti-Western but is more deadly in its control of seized territories.

Like Babafemi, a 28-year-old last son of a former bank chairman, Umar Abdulmutallab, at the age of 23 on Christmas day of 2009 confessed to and was convicted of attempting to detonate plastic explosives hidden in his underwear while on board Northwest Airlines Flight 253, en route from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan.

Abdulmutallab, who came to be known as ‘underwear bomber’ was said to have been sponsored by the Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Prosecutors had provided evidence of his romance with the terrorist organisation, which trained him and supplied him with the bomb.

Last week, the Nigeria Immigration Service announced it had barred no fewer than 4,916 Nigerians from travelling out of the country between January and March, 2015.

The Nigerians were suspected to be on their way to join international terrorist organisations, including the ISIS and the Taliban.

A seven-day curfew will begin after the remains of the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II, must have been buried on Friday, the town’s chiefs have said.

The spokesperson for the chiefs, Chief Dejo Adejobi, told our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday that the restriction of movement for the rites would start from 4pm today and would past for the next seven days.

But asked what the chiefs would do to ensure that the curfew would not affect visitors who would attend the burial, Adejobi said, “I understand you. Yes, we cannot invite people for the burial service and still restrict their movement. But you should understand that the service will start by 10am and the restriction of movement will start from 4:pm.”

Meanwhile, the burial rites which would herald the interment of the late monarch continued on Thursday as town criers from the palace moved round the town to enforce the chiefs’ order.

A resident, who witnessed the scene, Wunmi Adeoye, told our correspondent that the town criers beat their gongs as they moved round, warning residents not to come out tomorrow because movement would be restricted to enable the chiefs to carry out the remaining rites.

The town criers, according to him, warned violators of the order to be ready to face the consequences of their action.

He said, “Around 9.30am some persons from the palace came to Oja Titun and started beating traders and driving away traders. They said the people knew the burial rites still continued but came out to dare them.

“They have shut down the market and they said the rites would continue for seven days.”

Speaking with our correspondent, a resident who said she had visited Itakogun Market to buy some things, said some palace messengers went round ordering traders to immediately close their shops and vacate the markets in compliance with the order.

At Sabo Market, which is mostly populated by non-indigenes, traders hurriedly closed their shops as the news of the closure order of markets reached the place.

Some residents frown on the way the palace messengers flogged traders and those who crossed their path, saying they palace chiefs ought to have gone to the radio station to inform everybody that markets would be closed for seven days.

The announcement of movement restriction may confusion among those who were invited for the interdenominational service which would be held for the monarch before his remains would be interred at the palace.

The interment, which would take place inside the palace, it was gathered, would only be witnessed by some traditional chiefs.

The gates of the Ooni’s place were ajar when our correspondent visited the place on Thursday. This, the chiefs said, was one of the signs that the Ooni had left the world.

Preparations were also in top gear for the burial as workers were seen clearing the bush from Ife Junction to the main gate of the Obafemi Awolowo University on Thursday.

I apologize for saying this but the problem of the North is "Islam". This is not a direct attempt to rubbish the religion but the fact that Western education could threaten the belief and practice of the religion has left almost every part of the North in perpetual darkness. The few educated ones among them are hindering others from being educated. They would rather prefer to have them live as peasants.

Ever wondered why there are no Northern innovators? Truth is, there may never be because the Northern powers that be prefer that others serve them rather than serve themselves.

Religion and lack of western education seems to be the problem.
