Is it WAEC alone?what of NECO?
I think it's only WAEC, at least for WES... But I'm pretty sure there would be one Evaluation agency out there that accepts NECO.. check naces.org

Does undergraduate aspirant need WES evaluation too?
WES evaluation for WAEC is not all that important but it opens your doors to alot more scholarships because most schools requires Evaluation.

thats like N1.6million, how will you fund the rest?
I'd pay for my SEVIS, I-20 ordering, VISA fees and flight myself. I intend to do on campus jobs and if possible off campus jobs. I just need something to settle me there first... And I'm still contemplating on choosing either on or off campus accommodation since I have a friend also with me with same Scholarship to thesame school.

I'd now be going with $5K from Nigeria here tho. So I had stiffled on the loan for now.

Na wa but you want others to share information . Maybe they should just close the thread then since too many selfish people out there
it is not selfishness. When I asked my question nobody here is under "obligation" to answer me, everyone does it by choice.

If you go through my previous posts on this thread I've dropped alot of information concerning Scholarship for undergraduate study.

The guy in question that PM'ed me, I've fully answered him already. Alot of people here have also PM'ed me and I've answered every single one of them.

The guy that quoted me, did it as if I was "bound" to share information and not choice.

Your being here and taking out your time to answer us here ma, is a thing of choice and kindness which I've also done and would continue to do in the way that I please.

why don't you share it here for everyone to see
I'm under no obligation to share it here like every other person on this thread doing things voluntarily. I decide how I want to share things.

Thanks

Hey,

First of all, regarding on campus jobs, one plus one does not always equals two. That you are eligible to work 20 weekly hours on campus doesn't mean you will automatically get a job on campus upon resumption. You might even get one and you will be lucky to do 11 weekly hours. Am about to complete my second semester and am still seeking my first on campus job.

Secondly, depending on the location of your school it might be difficult to see an apartment where you and someone will share a room as most times you might be living with other flatmates that won't allow such. You might see a studio apartment that will be above your budget and the owners might not allow more than one person. Reality sometimes changes when you become physically present.

Outside scholarships and grants won't just fall on your lap either.

All this dollars calculations that you did varies as some weeks you might work less hours and some weeks you might work more. Nothing is constant in this country

It's best to have a very very good financial plan before you make your move and don't just settle on speculations and heresay.

regards.
Thank you very much boss, please what's the name of your school?

Glad to see you have plans on how you intend to settle however, for the living cost, your dreams are not unrealistic and for now, you have to think of the best way to cross the hurdle of the visa interview. For this, it is not advisable you take a loan for undergraduate studies. Try think far and near of relatives or even older friends that could have about $8000 and act as your sponsor. Since you plan on living modestly, I am sure you both will be okay with an on-campus job.
I would get a bank statement of more than $12000 from my uncle for VISA interview and hope to get about $4000 from my parents when traveling.

grin grin grin grin I have no idea where you're getting your information from. And I hope you've gotten your visa and now in the US. If not, I would like you to try what you're suggesting here for yourself. If your top 15 MBAs are offered within the Ivy League schools, which the VO themselves feel jealous and shocked when they see a Nigerian student admitted there, then this is cool. If the top 15 MBAs are not from the Ivy League, well, you know it!
I don't know about graduate for these big schools but for the undergraduate degree. When you're applying you're going to indicate whether you need a "need-based" Scholarship or not.

If you indicate that you need a "need-based" Scholarship and you're admitted. They'd meet 100% of your financial needs and it will reflect in your I-20

Rather than get a loan can you get a relative who can bear the cost at least for the first alongside your parents? I believe you stand a chance of increasing your scholarship amount should you do very well in your program. In my opinion, the idea of a loan for an undergraduate program sounds over ambitious to me and in particular, the returns on the investment upon return to Nigeria might not be so great considering that our Naira is yet to be stable. Thinking from an extreme of the spectrum.

I don't have any relative in the US.

My parents are not that bouyant and I don't want to stress them when I can get just get a small loan

The loan I need is just about $2500 maximum.

This is a very solid response!

@Sarcasticmofo:

Try and explore ways of financing the first year. Since you have tuition sorted, you are almost there. While in school, you can look out for on-campus jobs and learn the ropes within your first year. Then a summer internship (or a school-based internship during the summer) + your increased knowledge of on-campus jobs + the possibility of getting more scholarship from god grades will set you on the right path.

The challenge is getting that first year sorted. You'll be fine afterward. Plus, I don't think it might be a good idea to get loans for undergrad cos master's degree is the undergrad degree in the US grin grin. Also, the H-1B lottery favors master's students more (especially the STEM folks), which places you at a disadvantage.

So, just try and raise funds to sort your first year and then learn the ropes of on-campus jobs and you'll be fine.
hello, thanks for the responses so far.

First of all the remaining cost of living is about $8K and it's me and my guy that both got the full tuition Scholarship and we're planning to stay alone in one room apartment for this first year which costs $500 per month...

The work study program of the school is $9.50 per hour for a maximum of 20 hours per week and that is $190 per week and $760 per month. Then for two of us that is $1520 per month. Neglecting alot of hours we'd have to work in Summer and still going by normal 20hours, that is $18240 for both of us at least for a year. Our rent for a year is $6000 and feeding let's say $5000 combined that's leaving us with $7240.

So the loan I wanted to take was about $2000 each for both of us, so that we can use it for small feeding, on ground transport and cover our settling there. Once we settle there and start work study. We would definitely be fine... Not to mention outside scholarships and grants.

I also don't have any relative in the US. I am also in STEM

I just got a full tuition Scholarship for undergraduate study but I'd need funds to cover feeding and accommodation.

How can one get a student loan without a US cosigner?

As some of you might know, I want to take the SAT and I really need some advice. I am currently in Anambra but I would be willing to go to Abuja to take the SAT if it won't be impossible for me to take it here. I need to become a student-athlete at Duke University and I think this will be a step in that direction.

How can I register and how much does it cost? What books do I need to get? I would have gone to the EDUSA advising centre but for distance.

I really need your input.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

There's a SAT center in Benin, there's one in Port Harcourt and I think there are two Anambra

Take your SAT first, apply to Duke. After applying go to the athletics tab on their website, look for the sports you want to participate in and mail the coaches. Alot of them require you send them a video of you playing the sport you choose and recommendation from your home coach.

It costs #31,650 directly but if you're not registering alone most centers registers for #50,000 and above

A friend of mine is currently in a state of dilemma.
She works as a waiter in Dubai with a monthly salary of 150k in a month. Recently , she got a job of 100k in Nigeria with a real estate firm with some "juicy" promises here in Nigeria. She is caught in between sticking to the job of 150k per month+free feeding+free accommodation or 100k naija job with promises of handouts from time to time base on contracts and sales. Working in as a black in Dubai is not easy couple with the stress of the job but she feels in Nigeria ,100k for a managerial position is more dignifying . Your advice are needed pleeeease.
From the #100K in Nigeria, she'd rent a house, buy fuel for generator feed herself and bla bla bla, it's not worth it.

How can she be even be thinking of coming back to Nigeria when she has free food free accommodation and earns #150K a month, that's the whispers of her village people in her head, don't let them prevail...

You're saying working as a black person there, Lol! Working as a black person and she gets all this? We face Tribalism in Nigeria but cos we're born into it we act like it's normal like it's no big deal but cos blacks abroad always talk about racism we become unnecessarily sensitive to it.
Security in Dubai and first aid response is better than that of Nigeria. She complains of racism but she's safer in Dubai than in Nigeria.

Let her stay, if possible stay enough to save enough to go to a better country.

It's not all about money alone, value of life, security, first aid response, 24/7 electricity. All these counts too. These are basic things Nigeria doesn't have.
