Health / Re: Government Vows Not To Recall Sacked Doctors by sartorius(m): 5:20pm On Aug 17, 2014
I hope this gets sorted out quickly, but i think the fg made a retrogressive move. i am aware that nigeria has more doctors working outside 25,000 in the US, 4000 in uk. now i know they are a lot of nigerian docs in europe, canada, the arab world probably in their tuousands. The mass exodus was seen after buhari proscribed the nma in the 80's. liberia has 250 docs for a population of 4 million, nigeria has 40,000 for population of 170 million. now we have seen d catastrophic results in liberia.its the popluace that suffers at the end.i would advice younger colleagues fresh from school not to consider residency in nigeria, it doesnt make sense.waiting for d response from mdcan.

Politics / SHERIFF Set To Join Pdp. by sartorius(m): 5:44am On Aug 17, 2014
http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/sheriff-confirms-defection-to-pdp/186486/ Putting to rest speculations about his plan to defect to Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP)) from All Progressives Congress (APC), former governor of Borno State, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, Friday confirmed his Plan to defect to the ruling party.

He equally said he was ready to assist security agents in combating Boko Haram.
The former governor made the confirmation to State House correspondents shortly after  meeting with President Goodluck  Jonathan.

According to the former governor, he was joining PDP in the nation's interest.
He told journalists that his meeting with Jonathan was personal and not political.
"Yes, there is ehhhh...but that is not what brought me. Yes, there is this issue that I might join the PDP, but that was not the discussion that brought me to the President.

"You see, Nigeria is a very interesting country and people like us who the nation has done everything for, as individuals or collectively. By the Grace of God in Borno State,
I have been made governor twice which is the maximum anyone can get in terms of the limits imposed by the constitution. I was elected into the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria thrice.

"This means that in every aspect of life, I am one of the stakeholders in Nigeria because if by the help of God, the people of Nigeria had placed me in that position at every time, my interest now should be on how to move the nation forward. Our interest should be on what makes that nation move forward.

"My decisions will be guided by the interest of the nation first. My thinking of moving to the PDP is also in the interest of the nation. We believe that every time, as a leader, you should advise them on the right course of action", Sheriff said.

He bemoaned the killings in Borno and other parts of the North-east.
Sheriff added that he was ready to assist security agents to combat the Boko Haram challenge.
"I am not a security man or personnel. Whatever as a civilian I can do using my position as the chief executive of the state for eight years, what I have seen during my tenure, I will contribute to the security agencies through whom I got those information. What you have to understand is that this country is a big country and Borno State is a difficult state from any other state in Nigeria.

"Borno has the biggest land mass bordering Niger, Chad and Cameron. It is an open border. Borno is not like the Republic of Benin with only one entrance into Nigeria. In Borno, you can enter from 20 different points to the country.

"Therefore, you need a perfect understanding of the terrain. You need every knowledge that any politician has particularly any politician that operated in Borno State. That is all we can contribute for now" he stressed.

On his mission to villa, he said "the president of Nigeria is president for everybody. He is the President for the over 170 million Nigerians and he is the father of everybody. So, every Nigerian has the right if he or she has the permit to see him, on matters that are either of private concern or anything that affects the nation. So, my coming to visit the President was purely on a personnel ground".

TV/Movies / 2015 Oscar Predictions, Best Actor by sartorius(m): 11:56am On Aug 16, 2014
Here's our early predictions for the best actor race, which does actually have a few considerable contenders already in Ralph Fiennes (whose work in "The Grand Budapest Hotel" is pretty universally beloved),  Steve Carell and Channing Tatum (both from "Foxcatcher," which won raves in Cannes), Timothy Spall ("Mr. Turner," who won best actor at Cannes), and perhaps -- though it's probably more of an Indie Spirit deal -- Ellar Coltrane's 12 year efforts in Richard Linklater's "Boyhood." Can they hang in there? That all depends on a slew of much anticipated work from the likes of  Joaquin Phoenix ("Inherent Vice"wink, Oscar Isaac ("A Most Violent Year"wink, Benedict Cumberbatch ("The Imitation Game"wink, Michael Keaton ("Birdman"wink, Chadwick Boseman ("Get on Up"wink,  Eddie Redmayne ("Theory of Everything"wink and Jack O'Connell ("Unbroken"wink, among others. Notably, of all those mentioned, only Fiennes and Joaquin Phoenix are previous nominees.

Check out predictions in other categories here.

Steve Carell, Foxcatcher
Ralph Fiennes, The Grand Budapest Hotel

Health / Nano-silver Nigerian Ebola Drug Is A Pesticide- US by sartorius(m): 10:29am On Aug 15, 2014
By Toni Clarke

(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Thursday it has become aware of products being sold online that fraudulently claim to prevent or treat Ebola.

The FDA's warning comes on the heels of comments by Nigeria's top health official, Onyebuchi Chukwu, who reportedly said earlier Thursday that eight Ebola patients in Lagos, the country's capital, will receive an experimental treatment called nano-silver.

Erica Jefferson, a spokeswoman for the FDA, said she could not provide any information about the product referenced by the Nigerians.

The FDA did not specify any products in its warning.

Silver has been used as an antibacterial for centuries. Tiny silver particles known as nano-silver have controversially been incorporated into a variety of consumer products such as socks and bedding to help block odors caused by bacteria and mold.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers nano-silver a pesticide. Manufacturers of products that contain it must register them with the agency.

http://uk.mobile.reuters.com/article/idUKKBN0GE2GD20140814?irpc=932 Nano-silver is also sometimes sold online as a dietary supplement even though Danish researchers found in a recent study that nano-silver can penetrate and damage cells.

The FDA regulates dietary supplements and said in its statement that "by law, dietary supplements cannot claim to prevent or cure disease."

The agency said it had received consumer complaints about the Ebola claims.

"Individuals promoting these unapproved and fraudulent products must take immediate action to correct or remove these claims or face potential FDA action," the agency said.

The Ebola outbreak ravaging West Africa has claimed 1,069 lives so far. Most have been in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Nigeria has confirmed 10 cases of the disease and four deaths.

Health / Nigerian Nurse With Ebola Dead by sartorius(m): 11:11am On Aug 06, 2014
Nigeria recorded its first known fatality from Ebola virus infection with the death of a nurse in Lagos, the commercial capital, Health MinisterOnyebuchi Chukwu said.
The nurse had attended to Liberian government worker Patrick Sawyer, who became sick from the virus after arriving on a flight to Lagos and later died on July 25.
Five other cases are being treated in Lagos, Chukwu said in a statement handed to reporters today in Abuja, the capital of Africa’s most populous country of about 170 million people.
Nigeria may try to obtain some of the experimental Ebola therapy given to two Americans who contracted the disease in Liberia, Jide Idris, Lagos health commissioner, told reporters yesterday.
The outbreak of the Ebola virus has killed 887 people, according to the World Health Organization. Most of the cases are in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, on West Africa’s Atlantic coast. Nigeria does not share a border with any of those countries.

Health / Ebola Test Confirmed Positive by sartorius(m): 10:39am On Jul 27, 2014
A Liberian man who was hospitalized in Nigeria's biggest city, Lagos, with the Ebola virus has died, Nigerian Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said.

"The patient was subjected to thorough medical tests ... which confirmed he had the Ebola virus," Chukwu said Friday.

The case has raised fears that the virus could spread beyond the three countries at the center of what health officials say is the deadliest ever Ebola outbreak and into Africa's most populous nation, Nigeria. Lagos has more than 20 million residents.

As of July 20, some 1,093 people in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia are thought to have been infected by Ebola since its symptoms were first observed four months ago, according to the World Health Organization. Testing confirmed the Ebola virus in 786 of those cases, of whom 442 died.

Of the 1,093 confirmed, probable and suspected cases, 660 people have died.

The man hospitalized in Lagos was a 40-year-old Liberian working for a West African organization in Monrovia, Liberia, according to the Lagos State Ministry of Health.

He arrived at Lagos airport on Sunday and was isolated in a local hospital after showing symptoms associated with the virus. He told officials that he had no direct contact with anyone with the virus nor attended the burial of anyone who died of Ebola.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health had said Thursday that "the patient's condition is stable and is in recovery" and that the results of testing for Ebola infection were still pending in his case. Infection control measures were in place in the hospital, officials said.

Confirmation of the death in Lagos followed news that a doctor who has played a key role in fighting the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone is infected with the disease, according to that country's Ministry of Health.

Dr. Sheik Humarr Khan is being treated by the French aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres -- also known as Doctors Without Borders -- in Kailahun, Sierra Leone, agency spokesman Tim Shenk said.

Before falling ill, Khan had been overseeing Ebola treatment and isolation units at Kenema Government Hospital, about 185 miles east of the capital Freetown.

Ebola typically kills 90% of those infected, but the death rate in this outbreak has dropped to roughly 60% thanks to early treatment.

Officials believe that the Ebola outbreak has taken such a strong hold in West Africa due to the proximity of the jungle -- where the virus originated -- to Conakry, Guinea, which has a population of 2 million.

Because symptoms don't immediately appear, the virus can easily spread as people travel around the region. Once the virus takes hold, many die in an average of 10 days as the blood fails to clot and hemorrhaging occurs.

The disease isn't contagious until symptoms appear. Symptoms include fever, headache and fatigue. At that point, the Ebola virus is spread via bodily fluids.

Health workers are at especially high risk, since they are in close contact with infected people and their bodily fluids. Adding to the danger, in the initial stages of infection doctors may mistake an Ebola infection for another, milder illness . http://www.ksat.com/content/pns/ksat/news/2014/07/26/ebola-outbreak-west-africa.html .
