I like the way the 1st 2 responders(werepeLeri & collinsfbi ) to this thread made their argument. It shows how insensitive Nigerians can be towards others even when things are not properly done. Have they asked how easy was it for the OP to get the new "e-passport" in where he lives? In where I am, people had to stay 3 nights outside only to leave without getting their data taken, even after paying additional $100 to the Nigerian high commission here. After sometimes, the high commissioner told them they can go to Nigeria and get their epassport. So does that mean someone will leave his job or school, pay high transport fare back to Nigeria just to get a new passport with old one still valid. The process of getting the new passport is really hell in some countries outside Nigeria. Even in Nigeria, the cost of 1 passport is N8,500, but people are made to pay as high as 20K to 50K. Talking about checking fraud with the new e-passport, I can boldly say it is not really full proof!! U walk into NIS office today to get a new Passport, all they do is ask U to give them 30K and some funny document even when U have the old passport. Let me ask, a certificate of LGA origin or age declaration and your old MRP passport, which is most appropriate identification? Yet this guys don't even demand to see you old passport. I have seen lots of people in Nigeria change a lot of info on the new passport like name, DOB etc. Some even have more than 1 epassport. We don't have any database to crosscheck. So if U like make 10 fingerprint with 10 different names n 10 DOB's. I think before this can be effectively done, somethings need to be in place. NIS is as corrupt/greedy as Nigeria Police, they need re-orientation and over-hauling. |
What is the ideological differences between all of them? I see no difference!! They all aim at looting!! How many of the Reps from opposition parties can reject the jumbo pay and 'Ghana must go's'? |
9jvirgin:This is what happens in a country where the paper certificate is worshiped yet no skills to do anything. The present educational system in Nigeria plus our unhealthy apathy for hard work is ruining us compared to the rest of the world. Why must every Nigerian want to be a graduate? Because people with lower qualifications have no jobs and are looked down upon. Unfortunately, the people that design and produce most of our automobile and electronic gadgets never saw the four walls of the university. @OP, look onward and DISCOVER yourself!! |
@jobfront, don't mind some so-called christians without Christ. Because some of us are so gullible to believe anything, we hate intellectual discussion or argument. During the 1st church council in Jerusalem, Peter and the 'core' apostles wanted nothing to do with Gentiles and the uncircumcised, but Paul rose up and make a valid argument. Y didn't the apostle call thunder from heaven to strike Paul, after all they were still filled with that Holy Ghost fire? We are too myopic for objective discussion/argument in Nigeria, that is why our leaders take us for a ride. Yet we come here to complain. |
@ALL, why do we always seize the slightest opportunity online to show how bitter, rude, and unsympathetic we are. The OPs did bring up this topic for us to start bashing her husband. She told us how loving and nice they are to each other, yet most persons here find it amusing to start abusing the man. Most persons are just psychopaths!! If U don't have reasonable thing to offer, please pass. Habba!!!! |
agiboma:I am with U on this. I think some of our worries in life will vanish or reduce if we do away with stereotypes. The OP has no problem at all. Just that she and her sweet hubby need to redefine priorities!!! |
@OP, U and your hubby both have valid points. My only sadness about your story is that U don't want to be mocked as a "housewife" because U once mocked others. See, Naija mentality?? Why on earth will U mock someone who has chosen something for herself(good or bad, life is a choice). Maybe, U were even mocking ur mother-in-law, yet she raised a decent and enviable guy for you. U see? Not all housewives do it because they didn't go to school or because they are lazy. Since U schooled in UK, can we borrow the most appropriate word for them: STAY HOME MOMS @Topic, Find this book "Things I wish I'd Known Before We Got Married" by Gary Chapman, read it. By the time U are done with the book, give it to ur hubby if U think it's worth it. After that, both of U will see the need to redress this issue again. If he's aim is to show off his ego as the man, then he should rethink. Also, if ur aim is not to be mocked or seen as a 'housewife', then U are need to think twice. But if it is borne out of desire for personal fulfillment, the both of U need to MEET IN THE MIDDLE. Mind U, many career women take time off their career to train their kids. Good Luck!! |
Here comes a silly Question:; Is the NYSC necessary at all? IMO, its a waste of 1 year for most persons. For those of U warming up for it, best of luck. |
Good concept!! But let them finish it before blowing their trumpet else it becomes one of the many "We will, , When completed" that never get completed. Hoping that whenever it gets implemented, it will not be only for the elites or be asking us to pay for fuel or file. I wish it can be properly planed and executed to safe lives. |
ujchief:I wonder if people like U have a mind of your own. You are typing on the internet as a 'christian', is internet/computer in the bible? U went to school, I guess, Where in the bible is it recorded that Jesus went to school? But we are told he read the Torah/Prophets in the synagogue. When John said not everything that is written in the bible, how do you feel about that? For people like U, U'll prefer not to answer your name because it's not in the bible. The Bible(in its present form) and the Church, which came first? |
nous:U just said it happened in Biblical days, then Y then do U hate only African culture? Try and see some positive things in our culture and shake off the complex. There is no superior culture and no inferior culture. They all have their good and bad sides. A bad culture/tradition like this is bad not because it is African, but because, it still regard the woman as a property to be inherited. |
I wish I didn't read through. This guy tells of the big sickness in Nigeria:Pride, arrogance mixed with ignorance and stupidity, yet we call him "a celebrity". |
Kai!!! Nigerians, we like free things!!! We like to copy what others are doing(copy copy) There is NO need for large number of graduates who can't get jobs or are out-rightly unemployable. Anything free in Africa(especially Naija) is always poorly managed. Some people have stated here that the free primary/sec education in AKS lacks teachers and the basic facilities. This(Primary/sec) is the basic education. So that is what we should press on the gov't to improve the quality of these schools, provide qualified teachers, provided incentives for self development of present teachers. The government should also set precedence for vocational education. The present madness about university education is not the solution to our problem, but the quality of the education people get in these glorified secondary schools(Some Uni). While I blame the governors of different states(Akpabio included), I think we should also blame our representatives who are even closer to us than the governors. They should be able to prevail on the governors to do something right and enact meaningful policies. Rather they go there for their selfish reasons. If all assembly members agree in one voice and call the attention to a particular need of the people, do U think the governor wont oblige? |
I attended single s3x school JS1-3, mixed SS1-3, I know the difference!! The truth is both are good depending on who you(ur ward) are (is). If your child has the tendency to pretend, don't waste your resources in a single s3x school. Aside sexual matters, they form majority of confra on campuses n cities. |
I don't know where to start. But must start somewhere, so please don't query my post not being sequential. The problem we face in our school system today is a reflection of the larger society. Wealth and showing off the riches are the new moral values in Nigeria. So students are in mad rush to make the money or show off the wealth of their parents. So to bend down is study is done by the negligible % of the student. They must do anything to get the certificate in order to present it somewhere for money(literally). So any teacher or administrator trying to make them learn in a proper way is an enemy. As such most Nigerian students are lazy, proud/arrogant and sometimes bitter of school authorities. About 30-50% of them are not worth the degree and certificate they carry. Then, there is the problem of private schools run by sole proprietors who only see the business(economic) aspects of the school not really the future of the society. I have more, but got to get back to work! And I expect some bashing if this thread last long after all we hate the bitter truth about out country!! |
I graduated from UNICAL exactly 10yrs ago. My results and class of degree was on a 5.0 scale. I don't think it has changed since then. As someone said earlier, all federal university in Nig use same scale. For class of degree in Unical: 4.5-5.0 (1st class) 3.5- 4.49(2nd class upper) 2.4-3.49(2nd class lower) 1.5-2.39(3rd class) < 1.5(pass) if they still award that. For the conversion in a foreign university, it depends mostly on the foreign university. The programs that UNICAL graded on a 4.0 scale are the Non-NUC programs like ND and certificates. |
This really sad but true!! But the relative poverty in the North compared to the South is the handiwork of the Northern Elites. Let the Northern youths think and reason for themselves rather than being used by the elites to satisfy their selfish goals and turning to use the man-made poverty to justify their devilish attacks on innocent lives. If we don't redefine our values and shake off the 'get rich quick' mentally we are going down the drain quicker than expected. I weep for my country!! |
Beaf:@Beaf, Please note on what standards U compare Nigeria to USA. US practices true FEDERAL system including resource control by states, not the central abi neo-central government we practice here. Look at the ratios of the amounts budgeted. U want to tell us that the federal government employs more people than all the states put together? Maybe U have to revise your secondary school maths as the OP was considering percentages of total budgets for capital projects. Lets agitate for true federalism, yet some people wants to defend status quo with their 'pee'(not blood). If there is check and balances at the federal level, don't U think the federal government will be able to hold LGA's accountable? But, they won't, after all the LGA chairmen are the cronies of the men at Abuja. If we must get out of the present socio-economic quagmire, we MUST shake off our present entho-religious ways of seeing things. |
Find a motherless babies home close to U and visit on that day. Buy stuff for homeless people or flower to the aged. Ask her to do the same where she lives. That is the essence of LOVE. When U guys get home, call each other and share the experiences of each visit |
When did phone calls become a measure or factor in love/relationship? Naija!!! Talking is quite different from communication!! Communication is all U need in a relationship. U can talk on phone for hours without communicating. So the quantity doesn't matter but the quality. Well, maybe because I started dating in the days of "No cell phones in Naija", but I had the best relationship with my 2nd gf for 6yrs. As against the BB madness of today. Calls are important but only when necessary. When a partner makes unnecessary frequent calls, it shows a level of obsession and insecurity not necessarily LOVE. |
Does anyone has David Mark's email address? I have a proposal for him. Enough of this internet ranting. Lets talk one on one with 'Uncle Mark'. |
Great thread!! This is how NL should be: Helping one another, not what I see/read in other threads. Kudos to OP n all the contributors!! |
Kobojunkie:@Kobojunkie, Because U are living in the western world sometimes gives U the chance to make one sided judgement. I have noticed that U jump at issues or persons here without getting ur facts right. Akwa Ibom as a state has her challenges as any state or country. But judging it with others, AKS is far ahead of others of same age. The governor is not a "sole administrator", so he works with others in Executive, legislative and judicial arms of govt. To always jump at issue once Akpabio's name is mentioned shows how myopic some people are. If U are from AKS, I'm sure U have one or 2 person in govt, who are part of whatever maybe going wrong in govt. Go and visit AKS and compared it to 5yrs ago. It's not perfect, but some effort has gone in. There is wastage of resources, but are these wastage not encouraged by ur "uncles" and 'aristos' who get the money to patronize ladies? The issue of living under $1 per day(since U live in Yankee U now count in$$$), is a result of long time neglect of certain basic needs. 1 person cant fix it over night. I'm sure if U are asked to go home and serve in a appointed/elective position, U'll do more than Bankole and other thieves who use the arrogant mantra "I was trained abroad" to steal us blind. So baby reason constructively. |
manny4life:@manny4life: In your own opinion, what would be the best way to discipline those boys? This is the aspect I dislike private school in Nigeria. I worked in one of such schools. U see rubbish from children of these public thieves called politicians. |
That people have been referred to the bible(Deut.26:13-15 and Matt.25:31-46) to see how to give back to God, yet I still read selfish post about tithing being strictly for Pastors makes me confirm how gullible(for those in the congregation) and greedy(for those at the pulpit) we Nigerians are. Or do we believe these 'men of God' are God themselves. The issue of tithing for wealth shows our greediness for material things as oppose to heavenly things. For those fighting tooth and nail in support of tithing solely to the Pastors(Priest), what is the place of tithing in salvation. So for you guys, tithing is superior to LOVE(Charity) which Jesus came to show us and teaches us to show to one another. Christianity the way it is practiced in Nigeria makes me think of just being a follower of Christ and not 'a Christian'. |
The truth is most 'young' ladies don't know how/when these movies and peers affect their thinking and expectations. The truth is naija is fast becoming too materialistic, courtesy of Nollywood and 'dividend of democracy'. If you have it flaunt it!! So, it raises expectations too high. Here is a conversation between a guy who disguised as a school teacher to find true love: Guy: Baby, who is your ideal man Girl: I love a handsome guy with tender heart. Someone with fear of God, takes care of his woman. I also like a guy who shows his wealth if he has it. Guy: That is nice. Its good someone has the fear of God to make a good home. So, will U prefer a rich guy or prefer to grow into wealth with your husband? Girl: Even if he is not very rich, he should be worth something tangible , Guy: (Cuts in, ) He should be worth like how much at least? Girl: Maybe, , like 100million in both cash and assets Guy: 100million or 100k? Girl : 100million, Meanwhile the babe is struggling to finish an extra year in the university. Nollywood is fiction, but most person are made to believe that they are real life stories. Even if they were, peoples' path are different. |
This is what happen in a world where sex is equated to food or recreation!! Poor girl living with such a burden throughout her entire life. I wish sex can regain d sacredness it had in days of old. |
Way to go Babangida Aliyu. At least this will be a precursor to true federalism. Let every state spend what it is generated in the state and send only a fix % to FG. Please Babangida Aliyu, No Back Down!!! |
usask4life:@usask4life n bashtee, I got the instructions on Tuesday(03/01/2012) this week. I just saw the listing online when I checked on this link:www.cic.gc.ca/dmp-md/medicalinfo.aspx?CountryID=1977&CountryName=Nigeria and was hoping to use the PH consultant, but not so sure. I need to do it by next week. |
bashtee:Will be starting sch in May(Spring), but if I get my TRV in time, will love to arrive there early-mid April Any idea about this medical consultant in PH? |
Please can someone tell me the state of facilities at 'Prime Medical Consultants' Port-Harcourt? I'm asked to do medicals by cic. Will love to do it at Lagos but I currently work in P.H. I don't know how good the Dr listed there is. Has anyone done his/her medicals at this hospital before? I need some advice. I should do the medicals next week. Thanks |
