Today was the first day of ALX August cohort

It was watching my kids go to school lol
I have been buried in work and Alx and I haven't had time to post here

Even on LinkedIn, though I have connected to a great number of people

This is third month in Alx Software engineering and my fifth week in Alx Virtual assistant program, it has been quite the experience.

C programming language hasn't been easy mehn... Especially since we got to data structures but having reached out to my friends and colleagues for help, they always provide time to explain to me. I'm seriously happy

Meanwhile, the August cohort groups are catching up pretty fast, I have a feeling that the number of dropouts will reduce!

I received a lot of heartfelt messages from the August cohorts yesterday, with gifts. Even though I didn't do much they dropped messages and gifts, it made me very happy. Not the gift but the fact that my post actually helped them.
Received invitation for September batch

- Sololearn - Sololearn is a very good app for learning and practicing what you learnt. I use it to practice my C coding

And if we start python, I already have an app for it.

ProgrammingRe: How I Would Go About Learning Programming If I Was To Start Today (2021/2022) by Saverin: 3:22am On Aug 04, 2022
tensazangetsu20:
Everyone that knows me off Nairaland knows I am a huge pessimist but when it comes to tech or the tech industry in general I am the greatest optimist you can find. I believe tech has the potential to change people's lives and it has done so. It is also the only industry that thrives on merit. No one cares what school you went to, what grades you had. What people care about is what you can do. You can't say the same about engineering or law or medicine.

I made this same thread last year and after working professionally for a while now, I believe there are some things that are important but I overlooked and I am making this again to guide the newbies on the right path. This thread is subjectively my own opinion but you can do your own research before picking up a path to stick to.

The focus on this thread will be on web development and the path to learning it right as I believe web development is the most profitable aspect of programming a Nigerian can get into. There are other fields but I don't know how profitable they are or how easy they are to break into.

If I was to start learning web development today in order to get a junior web dev role, I would start like this :

I would learn HTML. This is practically the easiest path and I believe absolutely everyone can learn this. After that, I would move to CSS. This is where the problem starts and by this level, people start to give up. I believe CSS is easy especially with the right course and I would always recommend Maximillian Schwarz CSS the complete guide course as that course made me not fear CSS. As you are learning these things, please build alongside. Dont just watch videos and sleep and think you have known them. Trust me you haven't known them at all. Implement the knowledge to cement it.

Once you are comfortable with CSS move on to Javascript. At this level, 80 percent of self-learners have given up. It's most people's first programming language and honestly, as a first language, javascript isn't easy. I also recommend the javascript course from Maximillian Schwarz. I still believe it's the best javascript course ever made and I still refer to it in my daily job as a developer.

Now this is where it gets tricky, I usually tell people to move on to React after Javascript, and rightly so but once you have learned javascript and you have found yourself to be very comfortable with it, start learning data structures and algorithms. I used to say this isnt important at all and was a waste of time but after working as a dev for more than a year, trust me I was just being very stupid. You cant even be a programmer without solid fundamentals in data structures. It doesn't matter whether you are a platform developer, a frontend developer, a backend developer, a WordPress developer or whatnot. You need your data structures and algorithms. It's like building a house on sand. Sooner or later it's gonna come collapsing. How do you even implement infinite scrolling in React without knowing graphs and how they work? Thats just one scenario. Double for loops in salesforce will break your org beyond proportions you cant imagine and a whole lot of other scenarios I cant even list out here which I have experienced for myself.

You don't need to spend 8 hours a day figuring out data structures and algorithms once comfortable with javascript. I recommend an hour or two a day. Learn the basic data structures (arrays, LinkedList, stacks, queues, graphs, trees) and the basic sort algorithms even if you don't understand it initially, cram it. Every day repeat what you have crammed then solve questions on leetcode easy to medium. No one will ask hard to a junior dev even medium is also very rare but just do it. Aside even learning data structures to be a better developer, its also the path to the very highly paid jobs. The earlier you learn them the better job hunting will go for you. Just imagine it like this, it takes you 4 months to be comfortable with javascript and you need like another 4 months for react, a platform and your projects and you are solving 1 to 2 dsa questions daily in the 4 months up to react. When ready to job hunt, count how many questions that is instead of waiting for when you have everything and you start job hunting to start learning it and you start failing interviews everywhere. The earlier the better even if you dont understand cram. Companies use the same questions which are available online.

Next is a javascript framework. I recommend React, I won't even advise my enemy to waste their time with vue but some will do it and still come online to cry. The react ecosystem is big and getting bigger. You have gatsby, you have blitzjs, you have Nextjs. Even in blockchain and web3 go and check most of the jobs require proficiency in React. Learn React !!! Enough said.

At this level, you should have your projects beautiful nice designs well created and implemented. Create a CV and start job hunting. Dont limit yourself to Nigeria. Apply everywhere. UK, US, Japan, Sweden. Tech transcends borders. Apply to jobs like a mad man.

At this job hunting stage, leetcode should be increased to at least 4 hours everyday and learning should still be done after React I recommend a platform. Same as my thread last year but most platform dev interviews are still algo based so no issue for you there.

You can also start looking at backend too but honestly if you have followed everything here, getting a job should be very easy.

Honestly with big companies no one cares if you are frontend, backend, embedded systems or whatever. The most important thing is data structures and algorithms. Grinding thousands and thousands of leetcode questions is the koko. They believe once you understand data structures and algorithms you can work in any software field. A frontend software engineer might join a big company like google and start working on embedded systems. So long as you passed through that system they believe you can cope.

In this same nairaland someone is earning 33k USD per month. Another guy here in Lagos cause he knows elixir got a 400k usd per year job in the USA. He stays here in lagos at gbagada. Data structures is the koko. Nothing else is important. I realised it so late and I am paying dearly for my foolishness. I could have been on 7k USD per month remote or relocation out of this shithole.

The truth is most of the Universities in Australia requires that you complete your application process through any of their designated agent in your country of resident. However, some universities like; University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), University of Tasmania (UTAS), and I think one other will initially allow you to apply via their online portal. I know UTAS won't charge you for application fees, but uts charges about 100AUD.

Do your further research anyways.

Austria For Studies (MSC)
Please note you ll allow
2 - 4 Months : Documents Verification (per submission)
3 - 6 Months : Admission Processing (start application early)
8 - 12 Weeks : Residence Permit Process
3 - 7 days : Visa D process

Notarization of Docs federal ministry of Education Abuja
List of documents i Notarized at FME
- Primary School Testimonial
- Bachelor Degree
- Academics Transcript of studies (Originally signed Copy, NOT a student copy)
- School leaving Certificate (NECO)
(Buy recharge O’level result checker card and photocopy all the docs in 3 places each, you ll pay 300 naira per page including the photocopied pages)

You’ll apply for Eligibility letter and collect after 2 working days (Price is 500naira) ( Some schools don’t request for this while this is mandatory for some schools)

Notarization of Docs federal ministry of Foreign affairs Abuja
List of documents i Notarized at FMFA
- Bachelor Degree
- Transcript of studies (Originally signed Copy)
- School leaving Certificate (NECO)
- Primary School Testimonial
- Copy of passport
- Eligibility Letter
- Affidavit of birth by NPC with Court affidavit
- Marriage Certificate (Affidavit of bachelorhood if you are single)
- Affidavit of consent from my wife
- State of Origin Certificate
(Photocopy 3 pages of each except the docs you already did at FME, 300 for each page including photocopies too) i used an agent, he charged 14k for everything, and i collected almost immediately.

Submission of docs for Verification
(Please note that the verification is done by Austrian lawyers) They will visit all the places you collected your docs and meet with every signatory on all the document. (You need to book an appointment with the embassy, do this real quick cause they usually give 1-2months ahead)

List of documents i submitted in Original and Notarized photocopies from FME & FMFA
- Bachelor Degree
- Transcript of studies (Originally signed Copy)
- School leaving Certificate (NECO)
- Primary School Testimonial
- Copy of passport
- Eligibility Letter
- Affidavit of birth by NPC with Court affidavit
- Marriage Certificate (Affidavit of bachelorhood if you are single)
- Affidavit of consent from my wife
- State of Origin Certificate
- Completed Questionnaire
(200k Cash at the counter as at the time 2020)

Collection and Legalization
The Embassy will contact you by email or phone when the verification process is done (mine took 8-9months due to strike and there was a date of birth contradiction on my academic transcript so i paid another 200k to verify the new affidavit that sufficed for that since Its an extra document and the it Embassy sees that as a new verification, mine took longer cause the court went on strike at that time)

So when they contact you after a successful verification process, you ll need to legalize each of this document (80€ per document as at 2021) you ll need to pay this in cash using the current embassy exchange rate. They ll ask you how many documents you’d want to legalize, be mindful of those officers at the embassy counter they will want to make you legalize every documents, but what you definitely need is Birth cert and police character cert. any extra legalized documents will probably be needed by the school or if you have any other plans in Austria.

Sending Legalized docs to applied schools for admission
You should have been in contact with your university choice, for me i wrote Admission Assessment, had an Interview with the head of program and passed, started a virtual pre semester warm up class on the program (NB: i started my application very early)
Before the school will send an unconditional admission letter to you, you will need to send your legalized documents to the university, So its always legalization of documents before admission unless the Uni accepts electronic application (which was in my case due to Covid19).

Acceptance letter and payment of fees
Self explanatory i don’t even need to tell you about this, when you re been offered admission to a university you ll need to pay your fees or at-least a deposit as stated by the University. Then move over to the embassy with your originally printed acceptance letter sent from the University, and apply for your residence permit. When i was offered admission i paid a tuition deposit, then just before the start of the semester i was asked to pay balance.

Application of residence permit
Apply for your Residence permit, that will enable you stay in Austria for 1year (renewable after every year) this is done by appointment too (They gave me 1month ahead, you might be lucky to get a close date due to appointment cancelation by some people)

List of Docs for Residence Permit
- Legalized Birth Certificate
- Original Acceptance letter from an Austrian University
- Legalized police Character certificate
- Travel insurance (A type of health insurance make sure it will cover for the time of your residency process and entrance till you are able to get an Austrian insurance; so buying a 6months insurance is advisable from AXA Mansard)
- Proof of accommodation (you should have booked for a place to stay in Austria Dorm or apartment, transfer a deposit and get a 1or 2yrs signed contract from them.)
- Passport page
- 3months Originally printed Bank statement having 6-7Million (depending equi. 15,000€) If you are sponsoring yourself, you ll need to explain the source too i guess. Because of money laundering they always require you to attach a statement from your sponsor or support explaining the source of the money or any other evidence to cover for the explanation. If you don’t send this, they will at the long run request for it just like they did to me after waiting for about 2months and 2weeks they requested for the document, after i provided them they approved my Permit within 10 business days (yours might be longer, na just God)
- (Application fee of 120 € Cash in Naira converted to the current exchange rate + finger print charge 20€)

You will attend an interview the day you submit this Residence application, so be prepared. I can't really tell you the questions cause it might come different for everyone. But read about Austria (States, Culture, Location in world Map) and fees you ll pay (Basic calculations) and concrete answer source of funding. They will try to intimidate you during the interview, dnt give in to that maintain your ground. And learn a little basic german or show you re eager/open to learn. Some said they asked them exam questions’ just maybe the man that interviewed was scared of my Discipline, he didn’t know what to ask from there. We didn’t even talk about what, how and why i chose what i want to study. But be ready for the usual question ‘Why You want to go to Austria?? And Austria location on an empty map.

Application of Visa type D
When the residence permit is approved, the Austrian immigration where your application was sent to (this will depend on the city you are going to and if its vienna it will depend on the accomodation district you submitted) will send an approval mail, then tell you to wait for the embassy to wait for the embassy in your country to inform you formally, the embassy in Abuja took about 2-3 days to reach out to me via email and Since i will need a visa to enter Austria to pick up my permit.
So you will need a Visa Type D to enter Austria, it takes only few (3-5)days to be ready. You can go ahead and apply, this stage is where you will submit your epassport for Shenghen visa valid only for 4 months.
- (Application fee of 150€ Cash in Naira converted to the current exchange rate)

You are expected to enter Austria and collect your residence permit before the expiration of this 4months, you ll be required to book an appointment with the immigration office in Austria immediately you arrive and you ll be resubmitting all the documents and this time you ll need to transfer the money to your personal new Austrian Bank account and submit the bank statement to them with other numerous registrations and documents’. Austria and process are like 5&6 so be fvcking ready!

List of Docs for Visa
- The embassy abuja will let you know in the email they will send you, but its basically ePassport, Two passport photos, flight reservation, Valid Health and travel insurance (this is why i said you need to buy 6months ahead or else u want to buy this twice) and when i bought it i applied for RP around July the insurance started around September, the earliest time i know i might travel.. dnt make it start when you know you can’t even travel so it can still be valid even if anything delays.
N/B: You will still need to do other registrations when you enter AUSTRIA to enable you get your permit (looks like an Atm card). This will enable you get a work permit and co, so if you intend to start working you don’t need to waste time completing this process, because you ll need an appointment and process before picking this card up might take off your 1month time. If you enter Austria you should know what to do, cause by then you suppose make friends and have colleagues who will be giving you first hand info. Try to connect with people, especially people ahead of you.. the more info you get the less stressful. Some people might be forming busy to answer you, baba/babe dey ask them questions until you get then you fit put them on the side.

I wish to put out words of advice to intending aspirants coming to Austria for studies.
1. If you wish to stay back after your studies in Austria, try and apply to courses that Austria required for career shortfalls. Don't go and apply for anyhow course thinking you can use it to get work after studies. IT courses is an easy process for getting job immediately after your studies and one Doesn't need German proficiency.
2. Make sure you have atleast 6 months house rent, feeding money, insurance before coming to Austria. Austria is costly and getting job without German knowledge is a little bit hard.
3. Carry enough food stuffs to reduce your feeding costs.
4. Buy most of your wears back home before coming.
5. Be ready to do intensive studies, unlike the type of studies procedures we have back home.
6. You can be working and school at the same time on 20 hours per week but be ready to put in your best.
I am not scaring anyone aware from coming to Austria but just to know the obvious.

Austria is a beautiful country.

NB: If you are coming to Austria anytime from now till June, send me a DM.

I wish you guys success and best of luck. Always feel free to send me message, if you need any clarifications. If you are in Austria and live in Vienna, you can also send me message for meet up.

tensazangetsu20:
Honestly DrLevi is spot on but there's something I want to add. Since your skills are mostly front-end and you need a job asap, forget about product based companies. Even the smallest unknown ones require very serious intense data structures and algorithms preparation. That thing is very tough. I am studying and I know what I am seeing.

I will advise you to focus on applying to agencies and dev shops both foreign and local. Their processes aren't strenuous and if you actually learnt what you are supposed to have learnt and known as a junior dev, you will have a job in no time. You can then start learning dsa when you have that job. Look for agencies that specialist in WordPress, Salesforce, Drupal, Shopify and other platform development. They are the easiest place to start your career now. Forget product based companies even in Nigeria it's very hard to join a product based company except your leg inside is very strong.

Unfortunately, going by the feedbacks on this thread, a lot of people don't give a damn about it. Most of the applications i sent out without getting a response from recruiters was when I had scanty github contributions.

Thank God for mentors, it changed dramatically. I didn't know there was something called job application package specific to software development roles.

1. Completed github profile with solid contributions (Open source projects inclusive). With links to your email, portfolio, linkedin e.t.c)

2. Professional linkedin profile. Also tailored and well crafted for software development.

3. Resume (Tailored for software development roles).
4. Cover letter (Needless to say it should be tailored to a particular role).
5. I even built a solid Angelist profile.
6. Stackoverflow profile.

"Miraculously", these changed the game for me and saved me from blindly applying to jobs without getting any response. Since then, I've worked at multiple projects and orgs (only US orgs).

Plus my experience, now I get an average of four unsolicited invitatitions from head hunters per month.

The reason for this shalaye is that technical knowledge is not enough. Sadly.
