ProgrammingRe: Social Media Is Lying To Beginner Developers. by Saverin: 11:33am On Dec 30, 2022
Devdevdev:
I created this thread because I've finally arrived at an answer to the question I've been having for the past month. What languages should I focus on to get jobs as a beginner developer.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but the answer I've gotten is making me lean a bit in that direction regarding this subject.

For the past 3 years, social media has been pervaded with lies about the technologies that gives a beginner an advantage in the current job market, especially for those who are self taught.

I've done my research and these are the in demand technologies locally and abroad.

For Frontend:

Reactjs (Redux -Nextjs - Gatsby)
Typescript.
For styling: Tailwind

For Backend:
Nodejs,
PHP with laravel framework
Java with Springboot frame work.

On few occasions I see some ASP.net and Ruby on rails, but the highlighted are the ones that always come up.

For Data Bases: Postgresql and MySQL

On freelance sites, the most in demand language is PHP and I see lots of jobs needing wordpress, magento, drupal and shopify knowledge.

But when you go on social media, everyone will tell you to learn basic HTML CSS and JavaScript as if any company would employ anyone that knows just that. Even learning basic react without any added frameworks is not enough for a front end developer.

The worst is those that tell you to learn Python. I almost never see any Jobs for Python, whether it's the Django framework or Flask. Most jobs in python are in Data science and Machine learning, and you have to be a data scientist or advanced mathematician to work in those fields.

The amount of gatekeeping and lies is astounding. Everyone says PHP is dead, yet, one in every three jobs I see requires PHP.
Four in every five freelancer jobs require PHP.

The only reason I'm even learning Python is just to use in it in solving data structures and algorithms and I won't use it beyond that. I don't have time to start learning Java as I'm preoccupied with JavaScript for frontend and backend, along with DSAs and some PHP laravel. In the future I'll pick it up.

Programming isn't saturated, it's just filled with clueless, incompetent people with half-baked skills who haven't done the right research.

TravelRe: The Hypocrisy Of Anti Japa People On Nairaland. by Saverin: 1:12am On Dec 30, 2022
Nigerians still don't get it. Our debt servicing to revenue ratio is projected at 123%. What this means is for every 100N FG makes, 100N goes into debt servicing (not repaying debt oh) and additional N23 is borrowed to meet debt obligations.

Nigeria has not built any foundation to recover from an economic doom/meltdown. The nation is at brink right now. Leave quietly or leave as a refugee (if Jagaban wins for sure)

ProgrammingRe: For Developers, How Did You Get Your First Remote Job And What Was The Pay. by Saverin: 11:01am On Dec 27, 2022
FanOfMyself:
One was a React app that basically does CRUD. The company provided an API endpoint. Though I was told specifically to use Redux for state management.

The Second one was specifically a vue app and it's quite complex. I have to search for images matching words entered in a search field and do some mapping. After which I will generate an invoice using the company's in-house API.
Quite complex!

The third was an app for streaming musical beats with waveform visualisation. No preferred language but I used VueJs because that's my preferred framework.

Quite a number of options.
1. LinkedIn : For me, i prefer applying on the company's career page directly. So after seeing the ad on Linkedln, i go the company website, view their career page and apply from there.

Atleast to avoid Linkedln (man in the middle).

Most times, the career page is under "About Us" or on the footer. Sometimes on its own though.

2. Here is a list of companies Hiring at least in Europe (i compiled it in 2020)
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WMjwxMXcsIycNxcAfxzdiGtEcRKsRs6izIRZ-O15IbQ/edit?usp=sharing

Hopefully it helps someone. NB: it is not an exhaustive list.

Open the careers page, check for roles you fit in, apply directly on the career's page.

3. Be open for interviews,

4. You can even relocate to Europe based on job once you are employed. Pretty easy.

5. Recommendations from friends and Good luck
ProgrammingRe: I'm About To Start Applying For Remote Jobs. Any Tips? by Saverin: 1:55pm On Dec 26, 2022
tensazangetsu20:
Honestly DrLevi is spot on but there's something I want to add. Since your skills are mostly front-end and you need a job asap, forget about product based companies. Even the smallest unknown ones require very serious intense data structures and algorithms preparation. That thing is very tough. I am studying and I know what I am seeing.

I will advise you to focus on applying to agencies and dev shops both foreign and local. Their processes aren't strenuous and if you actually learnt what you are supposed to have learnt and known as a junior dev, you will have a job in no time. You can then start learning dsa when you have that job. Look for agencies that specialist in WordPress, Salesforce, Drupal, Shopify and other platform development. They are the easiest place to start your career now. Forget product based companies even in Nigeria it's very hard to join a product based company except your leg inside is very strong.
My leg no strong oh grin grin

When you learn the basic syntax build something with them Utilizing all core fundamentals like For loops and core data structures of Java. After that, when you get to the OOP stage, this is where you need to build a few projects that make you solidify those concepts properly. By then you can now take a future project you want to have on your portfolio and then start learning to implement them gradually e.g CMS, Travel apps, Browser extensions, Syntax checkers, URL Short etc.

Let me give you A unique project that is not popular. You can build a Software based on the Binary search Algorithms on Spring boot that retrieves data from Google Map API that calculates distance based on user input grin. It's not complex when you learn what's needed. APIs are beautiful
Thank you so much. Pls is there any WhatsApp/Slack/Discord... group I can join for mentorships?

the next cohort begins 27th of this month. July is void.

They have several stages of acceptance:
1. Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and git/Github. If you don't have the skills, you can take a pre-course.(1 month should do this)

2. You solve 2 easy questions on Hackerrank

3. You sign a check-in form to validate your internet speed and ability to speak English.

4. If you pass the 3 stages above, you get paired to three other applicants from round the world to build 3 different projects from Freecodecamp's five projects on responsive web design, Plus solving two more questions from Hackerrank.
You and your reviewers will review each others coding skills, use of GitHub, internet speed and English skills.

5. If they pass you for stage 5 above, you do a 30min interview.

6. If successful, you sign the Income sharing arrangement, provide ID and proof of residence.

Finally, you're in
Please when is the next cohort starting?

Let me give you a very fast track. There's a company Called Microverse(Microverse.org). It's a company based in USA.

They train you for 7 months, then you use 3 months to look for a remote job. You pay them 15% of your income after your start making $1000. Some of their graduates make $30,000 because the stack they use is fullstack Ruby(HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Ruby and it's framework Ruby and Rails).

They have a one month pre-course, so don't worry if you're a beginner.

The training is on the concept of pair programming, so you'll work with students from all around the world.

If you register now, and get accepted let's say in August, by May next year you're at least a 500k earner.

That's the most practical advice from me, because it's structured, and you're learning with a goal to get a job.

Note: Ruby and rails is a sought after stack in US and Australia, so there's no much competition for developing countries developers.

This advice is just for Software Development.
Other fields of Tech like Product Design, Graphic design, just get a good Udemy course and stick to it for six months while connecting with a community.

All what I mentioned needs dedication. So if you're intentional, by this time next year, you'd smile.

Good luck.
If one register now, which month will one be accepted?

Hannania:
Tensa this is relative subject to background and exposure to those concepts. Besides, our IQ level aren't the same. Google internship pays around $10k per month and it's feasible to grind leetcode and having resources like "Cracking the interview questions" and Clement Mihailescu AlgoExpert premium with a year of dedicated study to get that position.

Besides, I believe In leverage. Someone can begin with Goldmansach, Amazon, Microsoft and BoA and leap frog to Google.

Everyday I go on LinkedIn, I see countless stories like this from young Nigerians and also few folks around me that are on this route. And it makes me challenged to change my own status. it gives me more energy to keep grinding. Goldmansach is the goal presently though.

PS: Biko don't fish you 3yr old kid with that in future grin

A child who has never left his father's compound will think his father's own is the biggest. I'm saying this in the context of Africa because Nigerians have this superiority complex towards other African countries not knowing many of them have surpassed Nigeria in many ways e.g. security, education, way of life etc..

Countries like Ghana, Benin Republic, Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa, Gambia, Cape Verde etc.. the few Nigerians who go to these countries, go there and start displaying foolish arrogance like we are better than them.. like how do you flee your own country that has failed you, yet have the audacity to look down on your fellow Africans who are doing better?

Instead of being humble and relocating to African, Latin American or Carribean countries that are safer & more economically prosperous, Nigerians will instead
seperate from their families, sell their properties, take everything they've laboured for and go and submit it into the hands of the UK government only to get sent back to Nigeria empty handed with a useless degree.

The Nigerians who are enjoying UK today are;
- children (first generation) of those who settled here in the 80s/90s/early 2000s.
- Medical professionals like doctors, nurses.
- Students who come with a 'dependent' spouse who can work while the other studies.

Most single students & every other category of immigrants will unfortunately fall into the carefully crafted scam - the UK immigration policy.
