Nigeria 2-3 Malawi match stats | #WAFCON2026

Aside from individual poor performances Nigeria as a collective looked quite poor.

They struggled to build any attacks or sustain long spells of possession against the man-to-man marking scheme of Malawi. They had a lower npxG than Malawi, a 67% pass completion and had zero sequences with 10+ passes.

Malawi on the other hand did excellent job at exploiting the channels with runs from Temwa Chawinga and looked to play on the counter. Had six direct attacks and scored twice from that.

The only positive from the last game is that we reduced the goal deficit from -2 to -1. It was my only hope when I realized we had lost the game. Seeing the Zambian goal difference against Egypt, I figured we needed to reduce the deficit as much as possible so we have a chance.

The goal against Zambia is to win not necessarily goals which brings us to 0 +/- then we can route Egypt in our last game to ensure qualification.

The shortcomings of the Super Falcons did not suddenly emerge at this WAFCON; they have been festering for years. It is time Nigerians confronted an uncomfortable truth: the team was not the strongest side even when it lifted the last continental title. Victory merely papered over deep-seated flaws, and in the euphoria of success, those deficiencies were conveniently ignored.

That triumph should have ushered in a deliberate rebuilding process, blending the experience of established players with the vigour of younger, more deserving talents. Instead, complacency prevailed. The inevitable consequence is the uninspiring squad we see today, where a number of players, by every objective standard, ought not to have made the final selection.

Post-Match Analysis- Nigeria 🇳🇬 2️⃣vs3️⃣Malawi

Goalkeeper
I have NO iota of blame for Amaka- she is the same WSL outstanding Goalkeeper with Brighton and Hove Albion and unarguably the BEST in the World. The formation, choice of players to execute, non-existent midfield and defence all exposed her. In a bid to make up for a collapsed defence, she was forgotten, her "safe haven" her 18-yard protection, and we all paid dearly for it.

Defence
There was nothing about the defence that shocked me; we already went with Isah of Israeli Division 2 ahead of Nicole Payne, who plays in the best Female Football League in the World. I still need an explanation for why Ogbonna, whom Randy retired 3 years ago, made this team when Madugu cannot trust her to stand in for Imuran. Once Plumptre was injured, it became a red flag that we needed two solid LBs, but Madugu chose a player he isn't confident in to stand in, overtly relying on Imuran until Karma caught up with him.

I have NO blame to put on Alozie for any reason - she is primarily a Right Winger whose game was modified to a Right Back. Michelle is upwardly Mobile and has no business being drafted into an unfair position, knowing that spot would receive maximum bashing. Naturally, gifted LBs would do better with the help of a Left Winger like Babajide.

I have made it clear Oladipo should be drafted to start filling in for Ohale, but "The Older The Better" thinks otherwise. Shukurat needed a seamless transition for such huge shoes, but the coach isn't bothered about a succession plan. Ohale has paid her dues; that's why I made a 3-5-2 formation to factor her in if the coach insisted on her experience, but it was always obvious we can't do a 4-woman defence with Ohale in a competitive game.

Midfield
Ayibde remains a trusted war horse, but it is crystal clear she can't Marshall the midfield without a double pivot to provide extra cover
Again, Madugu chose to expose her and played Ajibade in an unfamiliar position, a move we all saw did not work at the last WAFCON. The midfield was begging for Toni Payne, who was kept on the bench until the Malawians got their confidence against us. My Formation suggested we played and won from the midfield, but a tactically inept coach made sure the same midfield was complicit by his formation and choice of players.

Forwards
I lay every blame at Madugu’s feet because his choice of forwards at WAFCON2024 finals that ensured we conceded two goals, made Okoronkwo labour for balls by dropping deep, overworking her in the process, played out again.

Ihezuo, who hasn't played any game since a major injury, mysteriously got called up despite not being fit or in form and started ahead of Rinsola Babajide, who is in hot form from club antecedents and would have acted as a double shield for Alozie whilst helping Esther with remarkable passes into the dangerous areas.

I'm glad Ijamilusi whom some of you threw darts at me for was properly exposed by Madugu by handing her the Number 9 shirt. How did she merit a call-up from a league where we have no idea what happens? A player with questionable final third balls and who won't offer anything as a forward in competitive games. Nigerians saw ball to hand at last wafcon as validating her call and those tap-ins could have been scored by a grandmother. You see why I continually said she would have left China if her football has improved but a lot of people who talk about the game have no business having an opinion.
Realistically we took only 5 productive forwards to this WAFCON out of 9.

Salute to Uchenna Kanu whose work spoke for her ahead of WAFCON. From Hat-Tricks to breaking club and league records, it was crystal clear she was unfairly kept on the bench for an unfit and out of form player. The impact she made in less than 30minutes will make you question the competence of our entire technical crew for keeping such an high impact player on the bench. She scored a goal and had another cleared on the line.

Whatever happened last night was no surprise to some of us, what came as a surprise was how everyone suddenly started claiming they supported me and believed my analysis all of a sudden. So who are those noisemakers who were developing mouth diarrhea on my page?🙄

Football will disgrace you if you try to cut corners but reward you if you put in the work , that is exactly what we have seen with Madugu and his fellow racket players who has no iota of business being in a successful team like Super Falcons.
Madugu never learns anything from his outings because he has no business being a coach for starters.

Firstly: Christy Ucheibe had no business on the bench when you had a player like Temwa and Tabitha on the field…

If Ucheibe was on the field it would have been easier for the defense because she’s certainly one player who possesses same strength as those Chawinga Sisters..

Guess what, Temwa knew she was facing a tough task with Demehin she had to draw her out most times so the other players could get a space.. Watch the goals we conceded…. Demehin was the only one in defense who could match those two Sisters Strength to Strength ..

Ayinde who already done two ACL between 2022-2024 is not the-same again, she needed Ucheibe or Abiodun to help her settle the midfield..

The Coaches got it all wrong…

Why Pick a 29yrs Sikiratu Isah who plays in Israel 🇮🇱 low league ahead of a Younger and very Physical Chidinma Okeke who thrive in Physical games like this??…

The Coaches planned to fail with their Selections, you knew you were going to face the top5 fastest and Strongest Strikers in the World back to back you still went ahead to pick Sikiratu Isah and Glory Ogbonna who have no business in the team.

The earlier we start sorting for a well built Center Back of at least U25 to take over from Ohale the better for the growth of the SuperFalcons…

My take: Malawi has shown football can be played in a different way. Not making 10 - 15 passes to get to the opponent's goal. For Malawi 1 long ball and our defence + keeper are all over the place.

Super Falcons are playing without a clear tactical identity. The formation is only on paper—on the pitch, there is no structure, coordination, or clear game plan.

Honestly, I am deeply disappointed. As a football coach and someone who has followed the Super Falcons for years, this is arguably one of the worst performances I have ever watched from the team.

The NFF needs to take a serious look at the technical bench and address the tactical direction of the team. We have talented players, but talent alone cannot win games without proper organisation, tactical discipline, and a clear playing philosophy.

Something needs to change. 🇳🇬⚽

The 3 Goals scored today, she kept the Chawinga Sisters onside.... I mean, all 3 of the goals.

She successfully played them offside in the early minute of the 2nd half, and the goal was rightly canceled, but after that, she forgot that she needed to play defense as well and was looking to play offside every fucking time.

She was a disaster in that 2nd half and bullied in most of her duels.

Hopefully Zambia won't humiliate us cause omo...something feels off about the girls. Nnadozie needs to get her act together fast cause she's the best we've got which in itself is bad, our lack of depth in the GK department will now come back to bite our behind. Madugu coasted on pure vibes and individual brilliance from the girls to win the tournament the last time, but anyone with a football eyes and brain would have seen the glaring tactical loopholes in his coaching, now he has been found out.

I don't see this team beating an in-form Zambia, this might just be the worst title defence in our football history, the team is aging and some of the players from this bunch should have been replaced by younger ones years ago.

I have a confession to make.

Folks are talking about how Alozie at LB was probably Madugu's biggest negative today.

But for me, not starting Deborah Abiodun and infact not playing a double pivot of Abiodun and Ayinde/Ucheibe was Madugu's biggest tactical mistake today.

I hid my surprise at his starting XI choice to play one DM and 2 attacking midfielders in Echegini and Ajibade knowing full well that the Malawians hit fast on the counter with 2 speedy attackers (among the best in the world) and a single pivot may not be suitable enough to cope against them for 90mins.

This was where Ayinde and Ucheibe would have thrive then bring in Abiodun for one of them later in the game..!!

We have three Solid CDM’s who thrive in Physical games like this yet the technical crew choose the wrong path..

Those two Malawian sisters were having a field day running at the right side of our defence, with Oladipo and the ageing Ohale all game long.
The Chawingas took Ohale to school today, constantly leaving her in the dust.
Not to mention a massive thanks to Madugu's shortsightedness. He said he prefers older players, right?

Common how many times did Ohale put a wrong foot on?? How many times was she caught out?

Maybe we watched a different game, Demehin was pretty solid with Temwa. Midfield and Attack didn’t click one of the major reason the defense suffered… They didn’t suffer like this against Zambia the last time.

Awareness of the pace and technical ability of the Chawinga sisters instilled fear in our backline and goalie, so Nnadozie played as a sweeper-goalie but misjudged the flight of ball for Malawi's 2nd and 3rd goal.

Also, playing a flatline in defence didn't help. Ohale should have played behind Demehin as the last defender.

I can’t blame both center backs, they did their best.

Players Selection and tactics cost this game? Why didn’t the girls keep the ball? Ihezuo and IJamilusi on the flanks can’t work, both ain’t typical wingers and Esther isn’t the kind of no.9 we used to have in the type of Mercy Akide, Sarah Michael, Cynthia Uwak and Oparanozie.
