Politics › Ruben Abati Explains Why The President Didn’t Say Amen To Anti Corruption Prayer by scopusng(op): 4:08pm On May 28, 2012
Abuja– Spokesperson for President Jonathan Ebele Goodluck, Mr Reuben Abati, has responded to accusations that Jonathan and members of his cabal refused to say amen to at this weekend’s democracy day Church Service when the preacher offered a prayerful curse against corruption amongst public officials.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Abati revealed aspects of protocol that are not widely known outside Government circles, and which would explain why Mr President and ministers didn’t say Amen to the prayer by Most Reverend Peter Akinola, committing corrupt politicians to the court of God.

According to him, it is a long standing presidential protocol that during Church or Mosque services, the President only offers a fixed number of amens or amis, as the case may be.

The Reverend had offered many prayers and demanded many amens prior to the contentious one, Abati explained, the result of which was that the day’s quota of amens had been used up.

“Why?” asked the spokesperson, “would President not say amen to a prayer against corruption?”

He advised preachers, pastors, imams etc, to familiarise themselves with government protocol and to also limit the length of their prayers and sermons.

“It is the same people accusing the President of not saying amen to anti-corruption prayer that would be accusing him of favouritism if he had broken with protocol and said more amens than is allowed by constitution,” Abati said.

Sports › How The Late Rashidi Yekini Blew N60 Million In 60 Days by scopusng(op): 1:31pm On May 25, 2012
Former Nigerian international and African Footballer of the Year Rashidi Yekini blew N60 million in two months, The Nation has learnt.

The footballer, who died on May 4, withdrew N1 million daily for about 60 days from his savings account in an old generation bank.

The account was domiciled in the Dugbe, Ibadan branch of the bank.

It was learnt that the USA ’94 World Cup hero withdrew the cash consistently and later started withdrawing the remnant in smaller sums, such as N10,000 and N5,000, until it hit the minimum balance of N2,000 stipulated by the bank.

The withdrawals occurred from the middle of 2009 and progressed till October.

The account had N62 million balance as at May, 2008. It was learnt that the footballer fixed the amount for three months and at maturity, he returned it to the savings account from where he withdrew consistently N300,000, N600,000, N500,000.

In March, 2009, he was said to have fixed the balance of N52 million for another three months. At maturity, however, the late Yekini started the N1 million per day withdrawals, until he emptied the accounts.

The late Rashidi, as he was fondly called by his admirers, was always seen at the bank because the account was a savings account. The account, it was learnt, became dormant early 2010.

One of the late Yekini's siblings, Mrs. Rafiat Adetunji, who spoke with The Nation in Ira, confirmed that there was no money in his account as at the time teh family took him for treatment.

She said family members got to know about Yekini's strange behaviours when some of his neighbours in Ibadan complained.
Rafiat stated that she went in company of her husband and some of the family members to authenticate the veracity of the information and seek for a way to assist the football star.

She said when their efforts to take Yekini to a hospital in Oyo State failed, they sought the assistance of the then Oyo State Police Commissioner, Adisa Bolanta.

According to her, Bolanta ordered that Yekini be brought to him.

Her words: "When Yekini was brought before the CP, the football star said he was alright and even gave some money to some of the police officers present. The CP was said to have been surprised and did not know what next to do or how to assist them since Yekini appeared to be alright.

"After that we got information that Yekini went to the bank and withdraw some large sums of money, gave out some to people and spread the rest onto the air.

"When we took him to the hospital, about four weeks ago not only was he mentally unstable, he was also sick.

"We did not have money to treat him. So, we went to the bank where he had an account but unfortunately the bank said he had no more money in his account. So, we took him to the hospital and we were treating him until he died."

The late Yekini’s last moments were shrouded in mystery and controversy. Some people claimed that he was insane a few years earlier; others said he deliberately withdrew from people due to the sad experience he had with a close associate, who duped him of some cash.

Many also claimed that his immediate family members came to pick him from his Oni & Sons home with the claim that he was being taken to a healing home.

But a close associate of the late footballer, who simply identified himself as Emmanuel, insisted that the late Yekini was sane. He explained that the footballer was duped by close business associates a few years ago, adding that the experience was so devastating to him that he decided to withdraw from people.

He said: “Some people betrayed him. That was why he stopped getting close to people. They duped him of very huge amount of money. That was what affected Rashidi. Rashidi was okay mentally. He drove himself and did everything well. Every month, he gave to widows and the needy. He was generous. He was not insane.”
The late Yekini died at Al-Amin, a private hospital at Awotan, a suburb of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on May 4.
He was taken to the hospital unconscious at 2:15 pm by some men, according to the Managing Director of the hospital, Dr Gbenga Ogunsina. He died 10 minutes later and was taken to his Ira, Kwara State home that night. His body was moved from the hospital by 11:00 pm and buried the following day.

And now, predictably and like the IBB years, Aso rock is now using it as an excuse not to act on the NJC recommendation. Too bad! feeble minds with no sense of history. Politics › Igbo Man Bags 18 Years Jail Term Over $250,000 Scam by scopusng(op): 7:58pm On May 21, 2012
ustice Habeeb Abiru of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja has thrown Ifeanyi Eze, aka Chedi Ojukwu behind bars for 18 years imprisonment, two years for each of nine charges of obtaining money by false pretences and forgery, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), reported today.

Thirty-nine year old Eze, who pleaded guilty, is also to refund $35,000 to one Yildirim Babadogan, a Turkish citizen.

Babadogan petitioned the EFCC in 2010 after Eze, operating under the false identity of “Chedi Ojukwu,” swindled him of over $250,000, with the connivance of three others, under the pretence that they were selling used rail parts.

According to the EFCC, Eze and his gang had advertised on the Internet that they had used rail scrap for sale to interested buyers. Babadogan, 62, said he was subsequently convinced to come to Nigeria for negotiation and to see the goods. He and three of his countrymen later came to Nigeria to seal the deal, where they signed various documents including those supposedly bearing the logos of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other relevant government agencies. He claimed that on returning to his base in Turkey, he was made to transfer the sum of $80,000, which Eze and his gang claimed was to be used to finalize the deal.

Babadogan further claimed that over $45,000 was later transferred to Eze and his co-conspirators on the pretence that the money was needed to process necessary papers and the shipment of the goods.

Subsequently, Eze and his cohorts prevailed on Babadogan and his partners to return to Nigeria for further negotiations.

On their return to Nigeria, Babadogan said, Eze and his syndicate started demanding for more money, including an additional $50,000 dollars for the Central Bank of Nigeria, as well as Customs shipping charges. To convince their victim, Eze and his gang forwarded a letter purportedly written by the Central Bank of Nigeria and signed by a former CBN governor that $50,000 was the outstanding shipping charge.

Babadogan said he became suspicious of the deal when Eze told him that 435 containers of scraps were already at the port. He said when he requested to be taken to see the containers, Eze claimed that because of their failure to pay the CBN/Customs charges they would not be allowed to inspect the containers but that they can only see them from a distance.

It was at this juncture that he reported the matter to a Nigerian friend who told him that he had fallen victim of fraudsters. He later contacted the EFCC and Eze was arrested.

In addition to Eze, another suspect, Tijani Ladan, aka Suleiman, had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced accordingly. A third suspect, Chief Uche Dimgba, aka Salami Kambo, is still at large.

Eze’s sentence will run concurrently, meaning he will be free in two years’ time.

Politics › Bola Tinubu And Buhari To Float New Political Party Ahead Of The 2015 Election by scopusng(op): 8:04am On May 13, 2012
Trustees (BOT) of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) retired General Muhammadu Buhari and the national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu have kick started a deal expected to lead to the formation of a new political party.
Sunday Trust exclusively gathered that a "reform committee" has already been constituted by both the CPC and the ACN to actualize the dream that galvanize their supporters and members to work together at grassroots level. Both Buhari and Tinubu met last week Sunday in Lagos to discuss on the way to save Nigeria from the grip of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Confirming the development with Sunday Trust, a CPC chieftain Pastor Tunde Bakare said, "As far as I know, the party's hierarchy has formed a reform committee to look into the past activities and prepare for the future. Until the committee finishes its assignment, anybody talking about CPC affairs is just shooting into the air and singing what he likes to say. When that committee finishes and submits its report and strategic position taken on how to move the party forward, then it would be made public. Until then, it is mere guesswork."
Another CPC chieftain and the party's governorship candidate in April 2011 general elections Mr Osita Okechukwu explained that the current alliance will lead to the formation of new political platform with new logo.
Okechukwu stated that both the ACN and the CPC now have enough time to mobilize their members and supporters at the grassroots level to key into the new plan for an alliance.
He noted that leaders from both parties expressed fears during the failed alliance talks on the unlikely possibility of adequately enlightening their members and supporters at the grassroots to understand the critical issues like the change of logo which will be involved in the alliance bid before the 2011 general election. He said, "the good luck we have is that General Buhari has already gotten all members to agree on this position. Whether Mr A is going to be President tomorrow or Mr B will be governor, councillor or minister, what is important is that between 2012 and 2014, let there be strategic meetings.
"There are issues that will be resolved as we move along. But first of all, let us make sure that the man who is a councillorship candidate for the CPC in Udi Local Government is going to come into the same merger with the man who also runs for the ACN. The same thing with the man in Uyo, Yenagoa, Oshogbo and Ekiti. If you don't do that, you have not done a merger. You might take it simply that if Buhari moves, Tinubu moves, then they have moved. It's not a fact."
He added, "We are even going to change name. The party is going to change name. We might change logo. These are things you have to enlighten people about because the other time when we wanted to do it, it was said that it was too close to the election. We wanted to change logo to have ACN/CPC, some of our people said no. When we went to INEC, the commission directed us to go through the Electoral Act because they are not the lawmakers. These are what time might allow us to do. And if you want to do it, you must go through this level if you are serious.

Health › FDA Favors First Drug For HIV Prevention by scopusng(op): 6:15pm On May 08, 2012
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal drug regulators on Tuesday affirmed landmark study results showing that a popular HIV-fighting pill can also help healthy people avoid contracting the virus that causes AIDS in the first place. While the pill appears safe and effective for prevention, scientists stressed that it only works when taken on a daily basis.

The Food and Drug Administration will hold a meeting Thursday to discuss whether Truvada should be approved for people who are at risks of contracting HIV through sexual intercourse. The agency's positive review posted Tuesday suggests the daily pill will become the first drug approved to prevent HIV infection in high-risk patients.

FDA reviewers conclude that taking Truvada pre-emptively could spare patients "infection with a serious and life-threatening illness that requires lifelong treatment."

Despite the positive results, reviewers said that patients must be diligent about taking the pill every day. Adherence to the medication was less than perfect in clinical trials, and reviewers said that patients in the real world may forget to take their medication even more than those in clinical studies.

First announced in 2010, Truvada's preventive ability was hailed as a breakthrough in the 30-year campaign against the AIDS epidemic. A three-year study found that daily doses cut the risk of infection in healthy gay and bisexual men by 44 percent, when accompanied by condoms and counseling. Another study found that Truvada reduced infection by 75 percent in heterosexual couples in which one partner was HIV infected and the other was not.

The FDA's panel of advisers will take separate votes on whether Truvada should be approved for:

- gay and bisexual men

- men or women in relationships with HIV-positive partners

- other people at risk of acquiring HIV through sexual activity

The FDA is not required to follow the advice of its panels, though it usually does.

An estimated 1.2 million Americans have HIV, which overwhelmingly affects men who have sex with other men, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. HIV attacks the immune system and, unless treated with antiviral drugs, develops into AIDS, a fatal condition in which the body cannot fight off foreign infections.

Because Truvada is already on the market to manage HIV, some doctors currently prescribe it as a preventive measure. FDA approval would allow the drugmaker Gilead Sciences to formally market its drug for the new use.

But support for FDA approval is not unanimous. Some researchers stress that condoms remain the best weapon against AIDS, and a prevention pill is not the chemical equivalent.

"We know that if the person doesn't take the medication every day they will not be protected," said Dr. Rodney Wright, director of HIV programs at Montefiore Medical Center in New York. "So the concern is that there may not be adequate adherence to provide protection in the general population."

Wright, who is also chairman of the AIDS Health Foundation, added that some upcoming medications may be more effective at preventing infection than Truvada.

Researchers also worry about Truvada's mixed success rate in preventing infection among women. Last year a study in women was stopped early after researchers found that women taking the drug were more likely to become infected than those taking placebo. Researchers speculated that women may need a higher dose of the drug to prevent infection. They also said the disappointing results may have resulted from women not taking the pills consistently.

Still, many HIV patient advocacy groups say the drug should be a prescribing option to prevent HIV, alongside condoms, counseling and other measures.

"If we're going to reduce the more than 50,000 new HIV infections in this country each year, we need to increase the available options for people," said Ronald Johnson, vice president of AIDS United. He added that more studies are needed to determine the drug's effectiveness in women and other patient subgroups.

"The current state of the data warrants going forward, but we believe additional clinical trials should also go forward to broaden the use of Truvada."

Last month, AIDS United and more than a dozen other advocacy groups sent a letter to the FDA, urging approval of Truvada.

Foster City, Calif.-based Gilead Sciences Inc. has marketed Truvada since 2004. The drug is a combination of two older HIV drugs, Emtriva and Viread. Doctors usually prescribe the medications as part of a drug cocktail that makes it harder for the virus to reproduce. Patients with low viral levels are far less likely to develop AIDS.

Side effects with Truvada include diarrhea, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. More serious problems can include liver toxicity, kidney problems and bone thinning.

Company shares fell 56 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $49.34

Politics › James Ibori And Dr. Michael Okpara: Reminiscence Of Thievery And Honest Service by scopusng(op): 4:05pm On May 08, 2012
The Adventures of Chief James Ibori, the erstwhile Governor of Delta State of Nigeria who is now a prisoner, a convicted thief in Her majesty’s prison in the United Kingdom has prompted me to recall the life of a man by name Dr Micheal Okpara who was a direct opposite of Chief Ibori.

Dr Micheal Okpara was the Premier of the old Eastern Region of Nigeria which comprised the present day Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia and Ebonyi States.
James Ibori governed Delta State from 1999 to 2007. He ended up a ruthless and conscienceless thief. What he stole is mind boggling. His property dotted the world. Just before he was arrested in Dubai he was about to take delivery of a private jet worth millions of dollars. For his thieving escapades in the United Kingdom he involved his wife, sister and concubine. I imagine that if his mother was well and alive he would have involved her too.

Reports have it that he is now in a Class A prison. Class A prisons are occupied by hardened criminals.
If hardened criminals in the United Kingdom are as hardened as those in Nigeria prisons then Ibori is in trouble. Definitely by the time he is released he would have undergone some transformation may be the type that Apostle Paul experienced on the road to Damascus when he encountered our Lord Jesus Christ.

Doctor Micheal Okpara governed the nine states which made up Eastern Nigeria from 1959 to 1966. When the military coup of 1966 terminated his governorship on January 16, 1966 the only property he owned was an old bungalow he had in his village Umuahia Abia State. When the Biafra war ended in January 1970 he desired to study Economics in an American University but he could not raise the fees.
In 1974 after he had gone back to brush up his medical knowledge and was in Edinburgh for his membership examination he shared a flat with a foreigner, a West Indian.

The first time I saw Dr Okpara was at a political rally in Enugu in the early 1960’s. What impressed me that day was his pronunciation of the word simultaneously as in Simon.

The next time I encountered him was in 1974. This time it was on one on one basis. It was in the city of Edinburgh Scotland the United Kingdom. He was there to prepare and sit for his membership examination in medicine Dr. Okpara had qualified as a Medical Doctor in the 1950’s at Yaba Higher College but had gone into politics and had almost forgotten everything about medicine. When he was the Premier of Eastern Nigeria Mazi S.G. Ikoku, a renowned economist was the leader of opposition. Ikoku used to confuse, dazzle and bamboozle the government side with economic jargons. It got to a stage where Dr. Okpara could not take it anymore. He bought books on Economics and when others would be sleeping he would keep awake to swort Economics. Armed with what he was able to learn he was prepared for Ikoku’s fire. He was able to return fire for fire and there was always thunderous applause from the government side whether he got it right or not. This kindled his interest in Economics.

When the Biafran war ended it was every man to himself. He first went to Ivory Coast and then from there to the United Kingdom. He was hoping to study Economics in an American University but he could not afford the fees nor did he got any sponsors. His younger brother was a Medical Student in Germany and his children were still growing up. He had hoped that the then British Foreign Secretary would come to his aid.

Dr. Okpara refused to appeal to him for help. In his own words he felt it was “infradig” to beg Lord Shepherd for help. Incidentally this was the same man of whom Okokon Ndem in one his news talk on Radio Biafra had said, “This particular lord cannot be our shepherd”. This was because of the not so friendly attitude of the British government to Biafra.

When Dr. Okpara was confronted with the problem of which way to go he decided to return to medicine. He made his way to the Dublin University. The first day he stepped into the lecture hall he was lost completely. What the lecturer was saying was all Greek to him. To compound his problems his classmates were his children’s age mates. But he was determined to succeed. He showed extreme humility, courage and determination. He succeeded and relocated thereafter to Edinburgh for his membership examination.

We met in Edinburgh this time on one on one basis. When my colleague Mr. Emma Chiedu and I informed him that we were sent to Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh by Golden Guinea Breweries Plc Umuahia for a Post Graduate Diploma in Brewing Science his joy knew no bounds. He said he was always happy to learn that the establishments he set up were still functioning.

For want of space I shall list some of these; Calabar Cement Factory, Nigeria Cement Factory Nkalagu, Niger gas Enugu, Turners Asbestos Enugu, Pepsi Cola Factory Onitsha, Goden Guinea Breweries Umuahia, Aba Textile Mills, Trans Amadi Industrial Complex Port Hacourt, Obudu Cattle ranch, Presidential Hotels (Enugu and Port Harcourt) Eastern Nigeria Development Corporation rubber and palm plantations, Cashew Industries and Ekulu Pottery.

Eastern Nigeria had the largest number of secondary schools and they ranked among the best. Farm settlements were located all over the region.

Of his role in the University of Nigeria project He quoted the scripture. Apostle Paul had said in (1 Cor 3:6) I have planted Apolos watered. It was Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe who planted and Dr. Okpara watered His only source of watering was the sales from Palm produce. The current Government lodge was built by Dr. Okpara. Even Independence Layout where the Lodge and the House of Assembly are located was designed during his regime.

During his stay in Edinburgh a time came when his flat mate finished his course and was about to relocate. It was gathered that he was looking for a flat mate. The thought that the former Premier of Eastern Nigeria was looking for someone to share a flat with was extremely depressing and I felt very sad. I did not habour the thought of ever making myself available. How could I have shared a flat with Mike Power even in far away Edinburgh I recall that John the Baptist confessed that he was not fit to untie the lace of Jesus’s sandals. That was exactly how I felt. How could I have watched him clean, cook and wash the dishes. On the other hand if I had decided to serve him my studies would have suffered greatly. In any case when I was growing up doing domestic chores was not one of my attributes. I was not ready to learn how to be dexterous with my left hand at an old age.

He successfully passed his membership examination in Edinburgh and those of us from the old Eastern Nigeria and our friends threw a party for him. I still remember how he felt so happy and was dancing his way around.

When he eventually came back to Nigeria he had nothing on which to fall back. It was Chief C.C Onoh whom he had made Chairman of Nigerian Coal Corporation who gave him a half built property along Ogui Road, Enugu. That property was disposed off after his death. His family was engaged in importation and when their goods attracted demurrage, the property was sold to settle the indebtedness. In concluding this reminiscence. I am reminded of the words, of the popular Anglican Church Song which says that when we have departed this earth we will only reminded by what we have done.
Now there is Michael Okpara University at Umuahia. It ranks among the top Federal Universities in Nigeria.
Okpara Avenue is one of the major streets in Enugu. Along it are sixteen different banks including Central Bank as well the Zonal Headquarters of PHCN.

Okpara Square is a beautiful arena where important events take place in Enugu.
Jesus Christ said in Mk 8:36 What shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul.
In Luke 12:15 the Bible says A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possession Prov 28:20 A faithful man will be richly blessed but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.
1 Tim 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people eager for money have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Politics › Governors Betrayed Me During Fuel Subsidy Removal – President Jonathan by scopusng(op): 10:57am On May 08, 2012
President Jonathan has alleged that some of the governors backed out on him during the fuel subsidy removal episode in January. This was in spite of all the governors being in agreement on the removal of fuel subsidy in the first place. It was common knowledge that the 36 governors championed the fuel subsidy removal as it would automatically mean more funds for their respective states.

The President speaking at the one-day Presidential Workshop entitled: “Dismantling barriers to achieving our power sector vision”, was concerned about the upcoming June 1st hike in electricity prices.

He said, “On the June 1 date for the increase of electricity tariff, I do not think we have had a robust advocacy and this happened to me during the deregulation. At a point, I wanted to send a team to the states to work with the governors and I think it was the Benue State Governor that said no, that if we do that, there could be crises, that the governors should take charge. At the end of the day, by the time we announced the deregulation, almost everything was on my head. Everything was on Jonathan to the extent that even the House of Representatives met on a Sunday to discuss it and it became an issue. At a point, some of the governors who participated in pressurizing me started shifting back. All what I am saying is that we did not have a robust advocacy. The Civll Society may come and tell you that they never heard you. We want enough communication so that we do not get to that June 1 and Nigerians will say they have not been sufficiently informed.”

The argument for the increase in electricity tariffs is that it will increase power generation as investors will be keen to develop the electricity sector. However this was the same fallacious argument used for subsidy removal.

The Federal Government may once again be biting more than it can chew by attempting to raise prices for a commodity it does not effectively or efficiently supply.
