Health › The More You Sit, The Shorter Your Life Span -study by scopusng(op): 12:16pm On Jul 10, 2012
Too much time sitting and watching TV is taking years off your life expectancy, a study says. Researchers arrived at the conclusion from the results of five studies that explored the effects on nearly 167,000 people of sitting and watching television.

Peter Katzmarzyk, the study’s lead author and a professor at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., said “…the study doesn’t establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship between sitting, TV watching and death. But the evidence suggesting an association between shortened lives and sedentary activities, like TV watching and driving, is piling up”

There also seems to be something about sitting itself that is bad for one’s health. Studies in both animals and humans have found that sitting leads to changes in resting glucose levels and blood pressure, and that lots of sitting bumps up levels of certain biomarkers of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

“The take-home message is clear: we may not know exactly why sitting is bad for you, but if you reduce the amount of time spent sitting, there are real health benefits,” the researchers said.
Katzmarzyk said since many people spend at least eight hours each day sitting at a computer, the workplace is an ideal place to start looking for ways to reform behavior. People can get up to talk to colleagues instead of emailing them, or spend a few minutes of their lunch breaks taking a short walk. And of course, a good place to start making changes is by squeezing the recommended 30 minutes of exercise into every day.

A Jos High Court on Thursday sentenced a 26-year-old man, Obinah John, to death by hanging for robbing one Dorothy Olaniyi of N1,705.

The convict was also sentenced to death for robbing Olaniyi of two rolls of peak milk in sachets, valued at N400.

The prosecution counsel, Mr G. D. Fwonyon, who is the deputy director, Public Prosecution in Plateau State had told the court that John, in company with an accomplice, also named John, now at large, robbed the woman on November 18, 2005 in her shop at Gada Biu, Jos at gunpoint.

He told the court that John and his accomplice, having allegedly conspired and used a gun to rob Olaniyi, had committed a criminal offence punishable by hanging.

But John’s counsel, Mr. Tobechukwu Kekemeke, rejected the prosecutor’s claim, and accused the police of “not telling the truth about the gun” said to have been used by John.

Kekemeke pointed out that the police presented three statements, with only the last indicating a confession by the accused that he used a gun against the victim.

The defence counsel further argued that the prosecution had failed to prove to the court that the accused actually used a gun to commit the act.

He asked the court to throw out the case for lack of diligent prosecution, arguing that “the circumstances of the third statement, in which John was said to have admitted ownership of the gun, is suspect.”

In a 60-page judgment, Justice Yargata Nimpa said the evidence before the court had shown that the accused committed the offence and sentenced John to death by hanging.

“The accused is hereby sentenced to death by hanging, but the judgement is liable to an appeal,” Nimpa declared.

Kekemeke told the News Agency of Nigeria that he would appeal against the verdict.

“The convict has the right to appeal against the judgment. It is not a judgment that we are satisfied with, so we are definitely going to appeal at the Court of Appeal,” he vowed.

Politics › Otedola Denied Releasing Audio Tape To Media House by scopusng(op): 10:19am On Jul 09, 2012
A member of the House of Rresentatives Ethics and Privileges Committee, Hon. Ibrahim Bello at the weekend said that Chairman Zenon Oil, Mr. Femi Otedola denied releasing the audio tape of his purported telephone conversation with Hon Farouk Lawan to media station.Bello, who disclosed this to newsmen said when the committee asked Otedola that how does the media station got the audio tape, the Oil Magante quickly denied releasing state and also claimed that he had never discuss it with anyone.

The Lawmaker said: “When we asked him about the audio clip, he told us to even summon the media house and demand how they came about the tape.

“He denied the audio clip. All he said at the meeting was that Farouk Lawan lied four times and that’s all. What I am saying is on record and we have it.

It will be recalled that the House Committee is probing the $620,000 bribe for-clearance allegation between Lawan and Otedola.

Otedola has accused Lawan, the chair of the House ad-hoc committee that probed the subsidy management fund of demanding bribe to get his company’s name off the list of those who got foreign exchange but imported no fuel.

Bello, however, said rules are meant to be followed, irrespective of status, which is responsible for the insistence of the Committee to hold its sessions behind closed-doors

He said: “Nobody can come and bend our rules. We don’t have any business with Otedola. I said it before his lawyer, who told him not to talk with us and answer our questions. He was only a witness before us and we told him categorically. We have ten lawyers in the ethics and privileges committe

“But he came with a Senior Advocate who sat beside him and told him not to answer our questions. He didn’t know that Otedola was only a witness before us and we told him categorically

“But the position of the Nigerian law as at today is that he who gives graft and he who receives are both culprits. You are not a member of the parliament and you were alleged to have given one of us something which is illicit, then, you are the best person to come before the Committee and tell us the true position of what transpired before you and him”.

Bello said the importance of the case would not give room for laxity as the integrity of the House as an institution is at stake.

“This particular issue is a unique case. As a committee, our business is the conduct of affairs of our members. But this matter is unique because it involves somebody who gave and somebody who took. The allegation is that somebody who is not a parliamentarian gave to a parliamentarian.

“And we in the parliament want to ascertain the veracity of the claim. Are we going to import a demon to come and find out what transpired between Otedola and Lawan?”

“It’s a matter whereby the onus is on Otedola to come before us and give us justification testifying to the fact that truly he gave Lawan graft because he is an accused person too by virtue of our laws. So, can you see the fallacy in this country? We don’t know who is protecting the accused person here.

“He (Lawan) came and we interrogated him for almost four hours after giving his testimony he left, with the arrangement that whenever we need his presence he will come back. Now he (Otedola)is insisting that we should go into a public hearing”.

You can now call the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammadu Dahiru Abubakar, directly on 08059666666.The IGP invites Nigerians facing "security challenges" to call him.

Do you have a security or corruption problem involving the Nigeria Police Force?
Then call the Inspector-General himself, Mohammadu Dahiru Abubakar, on 08059666666. That’s right: it is his personal mobile phone number.

In an unprecedented public relations move, Mr. Abubakar published the number this afternoon in Kaduna, charging all Nigerians who have security challenges to reach him directly, and also to report any policeman or officer found engaging in corrupt practices and abnormalities.

The IG was speaking at Force Headquarters in the city after inspecting some weapons recovered by his men from suspected rioters and bombers.

He warned that the Nigeria Police must change based on reforms he is spearheading towards changing its battered image.

The IG also blasted the Nigerian elite, alleging that some of them induce police officers to play their games by freeing hardened criminals who ought to be prosecuted.

Politics › Court Bars FG From Implementing Fuel Subsidy Report by scopusng(op): 10:59am On Jul 05, 2012
A Federal High Court, in Abuja has barred the federal government from implementing the fuel subsidy report by not prosecuting any official of the Integrated Oil and Gas Ltd.

Presiding Judge, Justice Gladys Olotu, in her ruling on Wednesday, ordered that the “status quo” be maintained, pending the determination of the originating summons filed by the company.

“The government and its agents are hereby prevented from arresting, detaining, prosecuting and recovering the N13.2 billion alleged to have been received by the plaintiff as fuel subsidy claims, pending the determination of the case,” she said.

Justice Oluto, also granted accelerated hearing in the suit, saying “this summons is hereby accorded an accelerated hearing in order to expeditiously dispose of it.”

The company prayed the court on June 25th with a motion on notice brought pursuant to Order 26 Rule 2 and Order 28 Rule 1 of the Court Civil Procedure Rules 2009.

Integrated Oil prayed the court to declare that the Federal Government, as represented by the defendants joined in the suit was not entitled by law to act or take any step on account of the resolution of the first defendant.

The company also requested an injunction restraining the defendants whether by themselves, their servants, agents or representatives from any act or taking steps against the plaintiff and its officers on account of implementing the April 25th subsidy report.

The oil marketing company is amongst the 210 companies included in the fuel subsidy report produced by the House of Representatives ad-hoc Committee on the management of the nation’s Fuel Subsidy. Integrated Oil is alleged to have claims of N13.2 billion collected from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Joined in the case are the House of Representatives, the embattled former chairman of the ad-hoc Committee on the Management of Fuel Subsidy, Farouk Lawan and the Attorney General of the Federation. Also joined are the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Inspector General of Police.

The company, which is owned by a former Internal Affairs Minister, Emmanuel Ihenacho, sued the respondents, following the indictment of the company as one of the major oil marketers that collected foreign exchange from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and failed to import or supply the fuel.

The plaintiff sought a declaration that the resolution of the first defendant-House of Reps-passed on April 25th, which approved the report of the Ad-hoc Committee was illegal.

Speaking to journalists after the proceeding, Tayo Eyitibo (SAN), counsel to the plaintiff, said any action taken against his client would be illegal, particularly when it had challenged the constitutionality and credibility of the probe report.

Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), counsel to the defendants, noted that the order granted for accelerated hearing of the suit was important to the case.

He added that government would complete investigations into the matter in order to pave the way for the prosecution of indicted companies.

“The report of the committee is still being considered as fact finding, requiring relevant security agencies to first study it before any legal action can be taken,” he said.

The case was adjourned to October 18 for further hearing.

Politics › Senate Committee Discovers Illegal NNPC Account by scopusng(op): 8:03pm On Jul 02, 2012
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr Jonah Otunla have both denied having any knowledge of details of operation at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC with JP Morgan.

This was revealed on Monday at the continued probe of the fuel subsidy scheme.
The chairman of the panel, Senator Magnus Abe, declared that the JP Morgan account, where proceeds from the sale of crude oil kept unconstitutional and illegal.
He maintained that all revenue accruing to the federation account must be paid into the Federation Account in line with the provision of Section 80 (1) and (4) of the Constitution.

The Minister of Finance denied knowing the account number of the JP Morgan account saying the Ministry only has access to accounts within its jurisdiction.
The new GMD of NNPC, Mr Andrew Yakubu, while admitting he had knowledge of the account said the JP Morgan account is not managed by the NNPC.
The committee directed the Minister of Finance to liaise with the Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Allison-Maduekwe, to immediately stop the operation of the account.

Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also revealed that the federal government has paid N451billion for subsidy as at June this year.
