Manchester City begin their defence of a first Premier League title with a home game against Southampton on the opening day. For neighbours Manchester United a tough trip to Goodison Park awaits as David Moyes' Everton look to break an unwelcome trend of starting new campaigns badly. Arsenal open up by welcoming Sunderland to the Emirates, while North London rivals Tottenham face a tricky looking game at St James' Park as Newcastle United play hosts. European champions Chelsea travel to the North West to face Wigan Athletic, while Reading's return to the top flight sees them host Stoke City. Liverpool begin life under Brendan Rodgers with a trip to the Midlands to face a West Brom side that welcome a new manager of their own in the shape of Steve Clarke. Another new Premier League manager making his bow will be Michael Laudrup as his Swansea City side have a capital date with Queens Park Rangers. It's all change at Norwich City too as Chris Hughton begins his tenure as Canaries boss with a trip to Fulham. The big time returns to Upton Park on the opening day as Aston Villa start life under Paul Lambert with a trip to West Ham. http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/7822482/ |

Indications emerged that the suspended House of Representatives Lawmaker, Hon. Farouk Lawan may not be able to produce the marked $620,000, he allegedly collected from an Oil magnate, Mr. Femi Otedola next week as part of conditions giving to him for his released by the Police. Daily Post” gathered that the former Chairman of Ad Hoc Committee on Fuel Subsidy reportedly told his investigators that the dollars have been stolen. It was gathered that Lawan disclosed this to the security agents when his Apo Lawmakers’ residence in Abuja was visited for thorough searching for the dollars. It will be recalled that the security operatives only recovered $10,000 dollars, but it was not confirmed if it was the marked dollars. Also, Police had visited Lawan’s bank accounts in search of the dollars, but they could not found the money. A source among the investigators revealed to “Daily Post” that when Lawan was asked about the dollars, the Lawmaker claimed to have collected the money from the Zenon Chairman as an exhibit ,he also said that he never knew who stole the money. However, Lawan has been released from the police custody on one condition that he must provide the marked dollars next week or face the wrath of law again. http://dailypost.com.ng/2012/06/17/i-dont-know-who-stole-the-marked-dollars-farouk-lawan/ |

Zenon Oil Boss, Femi Otedola, to sue the House of Reps for N1trn over the defamation of his character during its plenary session on Friday. Following the decision of the House of Reps to refer his oil company, Zenon Oil to anti-graft agencies for fraud investigation, Mr Femi Otedola has described the plenary session of the House as a celebration of corruption. A statement issued by him in reaction to the House resolution reads: “I have stated the facts in my interview with Thisday newspaper and nothing but the facts. That Farouk Lawan demanded $3 million from me and because I refused to oblige him he included the name of Zenon amongst those who bought forex without importing petroleum products. He did this without even asking Zenon to produce a single document of the forex transaction. He clearly wanted to extort money for an offence I did not commit. That is why I went to report to the security agencies. If I had anything to hide I wouldn’t have gone to the agencies. There is an old adage that says “people who live in glass houses should not throw stones”. “Moreover it is not possible to purchase $232, 975,385.13 million from CBN without importing the product. The total figure is not even $232, 975,385.13 million as alleged but $372, 207, 990 million. They should go and amend the report to read $372, 207, 990 million which is the correct figure. It is not possible to purchase this volume of forex from the CBN with first class banks such as Access bank, FCMB, GTB, UBA and an international bank BNP Paribas which is one of the biggest and most respected banks in the world. “If people at my level who have worked hard to build their businesses can be blackmailed this way all in a bid to extort money from them, I pity people that are just starting out in business in this country. In all my business dealings I have always been above board and the records are there to prove. As far as I know Lawan could not have been working alone in this extortionist plot. A tree does not make a forest. Let me also state for the records that we are not in any way affiliated to the other company Synopsis enterprises Ltd also included in the report. Actions of today by the house is laughable, a mere celebration of corruption and a further indictment on their honorable member. “ http://ediong..pt/2012/06/femi-otedola-describes-house-of-reps.html |

Abuja - Minister of Finance and Co-coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has warned of a difficult time ahead as she told the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, yesterday, that “government should buckle up and prepare for a possible recession” in the economy. Her warning came on the heels of the approval of a new visa regime by the Federal Executive Council. Okonjo-Iweala, who gave the warning during the weekly meeting at the Presidential Villa cited the slide in the price of crude oil as well as the dire economic situation inSpainand Greeceas possible trigger for another round of global recess. Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, who conveyed the Minister of Finance’s warning quoted her as saying: “Nigeriamay not be so lucky to avoid recession this time as it did during the last economic meltdown and urged the Federal Government to put up measures that will help mitigate the effect of such economic melt down.” According Maku, the Coordinating Minister, however, explained that occasional delays in meeting government’s obligation to creditors was not a sign of weakness in the economy, adding: “Our economy is sound.” http://ascology.com/news/local-news/25375-Hard-times-await-Nigerians-possible-recession-the-way--.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is now in crisis over Vice-President Namadi Sambo and Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi ambition in the 2015 presidential election. It was gathered that some leaders of the party who are not satisfied with the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan and who believed if a credible person is not presented in 2015 general elections as PDP candidate, the party may be kicked out of Aso rock for the first time in 16 years of ruling. Already, it was learnt that the River State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who is also Chairman of Governors’ Forum is nursing the ambition of emerging as the Presidential candidate of PDP. Presently, the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party is divided among the supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan, pro-Sambo members and Amaechi. Leading the pack for the pro-Sambo camp is the National Organising Secretary of the party, Abubakar Mustapha, a special nominee of the vice- president. It is also believed that the National Secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; the Deputy National Chairman, Dr. Sam Jaja and the National Treasurer, Bala Kaoje, had sympathy for the group. Mustapha is a loyalist of Sambo while Jaja is an ally of Amaechi. Those supporting President Jonathan are the PDP National Chairman, Dr. Bamanga Tukur; the National Woman Leader, Kema Chikwe; the National Youth Leader, Garba Chiza and a few others. The pro-Sambo group also reportedly has the tacit support of some members of the National Assembly. According to a report in “National mirror” pro-Sambo group met recently in Johannesburg, South Africa, to fine-tune their plans to effect changes in government under the cover of attending the election of Hon. Bethel Amadi as the Speaker of the African Parliament. http://dailypost.com.ng/2012/06/12/2015-pdp-nwc-divided-over-sambo-amaechi-joint-ticket/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=2015-pdp-nwc-divided-over-sambo-amaechi-joint-ticket |

In an effort to address the high unemployment problem, especially among youths, the Federal Government has begun the provision of about 370,000 jobs across the country. The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, made the announcement at the flag-off of the Federal Government Community Service Scheme, held in Yola on Monday. The project, which is under the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), is part of the steps taken by President Goodluck Jonathan, to address the problem of youth unemployment. “The programme is designed by President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to create employment opportunities for up to 370, 000 women and youths yearly in the 37 states of the federation and the FCT, towards improving socio-economic infrastructure. “To reduce the vulnerability of unskilled women and youths through exposure to income generating opportunities and to create good value systems in women and youths, through pre-engagement orientation sessions, ” Okonjo-Iweala said. She explained that each state of the federation would benefit with about 10,000 jobs and every beneficiary would receive N10, 000 monthly. Okonjo-Iweala, who expressed worries over the rate of unemployment in the country said that the country’s unemployment rate was still manageable, compared to some African and European countries. “Youth unemployment is now a global problem as well as a big issue, but for us, we have to look carefully on how to tackle this problem. “For example, in South Africa and Spain the rate of unemployment is now over 50 per cent each, while in Nigeria, the rate of unemployment is about 47 per cent,” she said. She explained that the main objective of the programme was aimed at reducing the current level of unemployment and harnessing manpower towards national development aspirations. She noted that the scheme had three components, including community services scheme, graduate internship scheme and vocational skills training scheme. Speaking, Gov. Murtala Nyako, said that no fewer than 50,000 unemployed women and youths across the state were appointed Special Assistants to the governor, with each of them earning N10, 000 monthly. “As part of my administration’s efforts to reduce the rate of poverty and unemployment in the state, 20 farming and skills acquisition centres were established in all the 21 Local Government Areas of the state. “Three modern vocational and technical training centres were also established in the three senatorial zones of the state,” Nyako said http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/06/fg-commences-provision-of-370000-jobs-nationwide/ |
