I think Oba of Benin should be the Man of The Year, 2012. The ‘gods’ stopped Oba of Benin from receiving Jonathan because the Oba of Benin thought GEJ was coming to change the name of his palace and said the gods didn't accept him.

long live the Oba of Bini.

Jonathan was in Edo State to campaign for the PDP gubernatorial candidate but the Oba of Bini did not welcome him in his palace.

Why? Because he was doing something that does not allow anybody to see him.

Politics › $620,000 Bribe: Lawan Tenders Evidence To Prove Innocence Before Reps Committee by scopusng(op): 1:32pm On Jun 30, 2012
There were indications yesterday that the suspended House of Representatives ad hoc committee Chairman on Fuel Subsidy, Hon. Farouk Lawan may shock Nigerians with an evidence to proof that he is innocence on the alleged $620,000 bribe between him and chairman Zenon oil, Mr. Femi Otedola.

Already, the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges had on Thursday commenced a proper investigation on the bribery allegation issue at the House of Representative. Lawan, was said to have arrived the scene of the investigation around 1.06pm.

It was gathered that Lawan cooperated with the committee members and also tender necessary evidence to proof that he was accused wrongly on the alleged bribery matter.

It will be recalled that on several ocassion, the embatlled Lawmaker had confessed to have collected the foreign currency money from Otedola, but claimed it was not a bribe and vowed that he would be vindicated at the end of the investigation.

It was reported in “The Nation” that Lawan appeared unruffled by the media attention on the allegation of bribery leveled against him has gained in recent time. On sighting the more than 50 newsmen who had waited earnestly for his arrival, he said, “Mr Chairman, it is a full house.”

However, contrary to earlier promise by the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Zakari Mohammed, that the session would be open to media coverage, the Chairman of the Committee, Gambo Dan-Musa asked journalists to leave after he had read his address.

Mohammed later defended the Committee’s decision to hold the investigation behind closed door. According to the House Spokesman, the decision was to avoid distraction as other investigations on the same matter were going on.

He said the Committee would not want media attention to create a situation where evidence of one investigation would affect the course of the other.

According to the source, the lawmaker, who was also relieved of his chairmanship of the Education Committee, was not only relaxed throughout the session, he was very cooperative and was ready to assist the committee in its assignment.

Saying that Nigerians are in for a shock concerning the bribe, the source affirmed that the issue of the whereabouts of the money would be laid to rest by the time the report of the Committee is tabled before the House.

Asked about the disposition of Lawan to the Committee’s questions, the source said: “He was confident in the way he carried himself, because he has proof.

He did not fidget and he gave us the relevant things we requested from him.

“You know he was Vice Chairman of Ethics committee in 1999. So, he knew the extent the Ethics Committee could go. So, he was quite open. The reality is that he has all the text messages. He has evidence that will shock everybody with the little we got from him.”

The source also revealed that the Committee was cautious but firm about the whereabouts of the cash, going by past experience. “Nobody saw any money with the former Speaker Adolphus Wabara. Where he fell into the trap was that he allowed himself to be deceived. They cajoled him that he should accept that he took the money and that he should pay back and that there won’t be any problems. He fell for it and went and dropped the money. As soon as he dropped the money, they nailed him.

“As for Farouk, he did not deny collecting the money as he seemed to be aware of the consequences, but the whereabouts of the money is what the investigation should determine.”

He also said that the main focus of the Committee is to ascertain the relationships between the alleged bribe and the outcome of the report.

“Our own job basically is to find out if he went out to take bribe to influence the report in any way. You should not forget that Otedola has three companies involved in the case.

“One can recall that the report was tabled on the 19th. If they had taken money from anybody, why would they be indicted. You know their mandate was PMS. This is a very simple matter.

If your company was not involved and you have documents to back it up, then present it.

“In the case of Zenon, he made documents available. But as for AP, he did not present any document and that was why AP was still there. He started helping the committee by giving them information. At the end of the day, it turned around. The story changed and started with some threats, but Farouk went to get that money to save himself, not knowing at that point too, the man was also looking for how to blackmail him.

“That is basically how far I can go with you until the man appears before us to have a look at another angle to the saga. But from what he has, Nigerians will be shocked.”

Sports › Nigeria: Stadium Manager Unaware Of Arsenal Tour Of Nigeria by scopusng(op): 9:18pm On Jun 29, 2012
Controversy has trailed Arsenal's Summer Tour of Nigeria as the manager of the National Stadium, Abuja, said he has not been briefed on the visit of the English Premier League side.

On Wednesday, Arsenal confirmed it would play against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a pre-season match in Abuja on 5 August.

But Katmwan Dungse, who manages the National Stadium, refused to comment on the tour because he said he had not got any communications from the organizers.

There is substantial doubt about the feasibility of the tour to be held in Abuja as the National Stadium pitch has remained in poor state since the start of the year due to lack of water.

It was then reported that the pitch turned bumpy because stadium grounds men could not water the grass following the stealing of the cables that supplied electricity to the stadium by thieves.

Members of the House of Representatives Sports Committee were told that over N70 million would be required to re-grass the pitch, during their visit in March to assess the damages the stadium.

The patchy state of the pitch forced the Super Eagles to play their last two international home matches against Namibia and Rwanda in Calabar.

Dungse, Thursday refused to drawn into any guess if the pitch would be up to standard when Arsenal visit the country in the first week of August.

On our visit to the stadium grounds men were seen removing pebbles from the pitch.

But the battle to reclaim the lush green look of the pitch can be compared to a race against time, as the task is enormous.

Sources informed us that workers would first need to weed, rake and invite a surveyor to level the pitch before they can now plant new nursery of grass.

Afterward, the pitch will be treated with chemicals to cushion it from the effect of pests.

While Arsenal will be in Nigeria in five weeks, officials say they will need about seven weeks to put the pitch in top state.

The visit to Nigeria will conclude Arsenal's pre-season tour after playing in both China and Malaysia in July.

Details of the testimonies of the suspended Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Monitoring of Subsidy Regime, Mr. Farouk Lawan, showed that he admitted taking “money” and “not a bribe” from oil businessman, Mr. Femi Otedola.

Lawan had appeared before the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges on Thursday.

The committee, which is investigating the $620,000 bribery allegation, is headed by Mr. Gambo Musa.

Findings indicated that the panel grilled the former Chairman, House Committee on Education for over fours hours, starting from 1.07pm.

Investigations showed that before the panel, Lawan tried to draw a distinction between money and a bribe.

He was said to have argued that he took money with the aim of exposing Otedola, not a bribe.

A source, who was privy to the details of the testimonies, said, “He told the committee that he took money to expose Otedola, as different from a bribe.

“In the statement he issued, where he admitted taking the money, he drew the attention of the committee to the fact that he was careful with his choice of words.

“Bribe was not mentioned in the statement, but money. Money he took to expose Otedola.”

Lawan reportedly tendered text messages and call logs to the panel as evidence that he did not initiate the transaction between Otedola and himself.

“From what he tendered, it seemed the transaction was not initiated by him.

“So, what the committee has decided to do is to confront the other parties to the case with the information Lawan has divulged”, the source, who pleaded anonymity, added.

Asked whether Lawan was in possession of the $620,000, the source said he replied that “a lot more information will be made available as the police and other agencies continu with their investigations. The truth is there.”

The source explained that because of the sensitive nature of the investigation, the committee later reasoned that it was not wise to make the inquiry public.

“Lawan has information and documents; he has text messages; he has call logs and other evidence.

“The committee didn’t want other witnesses to take advantage of a public appearance and work on their own testimonies.

“The committee wants to throw Lawan’s claims on other witnesses to see how they will respond.

“In that way, some conflicting information may come to the fore.

“The other witnesses too will be heard in camera and will be accorded the same protection as Lawan”, the source stated.

Lawan was discharged after four hours of meeting with the panel.

According to the source, the committee resolved to invite him again if the testimonies of other witnesses punctured his claims “or if there is the need to hear from him again.

“Otherwise, the committee is done with him.”

Politics › Boko Haram Cell Leader, Habib Bama, Dies From Gunshot Wounds by scopusng(op): 4:43pm On Jun 22, 2012
Habibu Bama, a cell leader for Boko Haram and the suspected mastermind of the Christmas Day bloody attack on Saint Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, Niger State is dead.

Mr. Bama, who was arrested Thursday in Damaturu, Yobe State as he attempted to grab a gun from a soldier, died early this morning from gunshot wounds he received from agents of the Joint Task Force battling the extremist Islamist sect.

More than 42 worshipers and bystanders died in the Christmas Day attack, one of the most vicious launched by Boko Haram.

A JTF source told SaharaReporters that Mr. Bama “was critically wounded yesterday when we tried to arrest him and he resisted. He died this morning from the gunshot wounds.”

The late Bama was declared wanted by the State Security Service following the bombing at Saint Theresa Catholic Church, Madalla. In a statement issued shortly after the attack, the SSS disclosed that Mr. Bama, an ex-soldier who hailed from Bama town in Borno State, was also known as Habib Bama, Shuaibu Bama and Habib Mamman.

Security sources revealed that Mr. Bama also played a key role in planning and executing the bombing of the UN building in Abuja on August 26, 2011. More than 18 people lost their lives in the attack, with scores more wounded.

A senior officer of the State Security Service, who confirmed the death of the bomber, said “Bama died in the early hours of today.”

The source said, “As I speak with you, the bomber is dead. He died as a result of the injuries he sustained during his arrest.”

However, our correspondent gathered that, though Mr. Bama sustained gunshot injuries during his arrest, they might not have been enough for him to die if he had been given medical treatment.

An SSS official told SaharaReporters that there was a deliberate decision to deny the late Boko Haram cell leader medical care to prevent a situation whereby it would be difficult to prosecute him. The source noted that government prosecutors were finding it extremely difficult to prosecute 10 members of the sect now in custody.

Thirteen mounts after the arraignment of the suspects before a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the prosecution has found it difficult to get witnesses to testify against the accused. “Witnesses are afraid of what would happen to them and their families if they come to court to testify against Boko Haram members,” said the source.

Last Thursday, an exasperated Justice Abdul Kafarati, who is presiding over the case, indicated that he would discharge the accused persons if the government was unable to proceed with their prosecution.

The Federal government has berated the criticism of President Goodluck Jonathan’s trip to Brazil, declaring that the president’s absence does not amount to negligent of duties.

According to the Minister of information, Labaran Maku who briefed state house correspondents at the end of Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, “the president can rule from anywhere in the world.”

The Minister added that despite the president’s absence, there is no vacuum in government.

The weekly FEC meeting was presided over by Vice-President Namadi Sambo.

Despite the raging violence in Kaduna and Yobe States which has claimed close to 100 lives, President Jonathan departed for Rio de Janeiro, on Tuesday, to attend the United Nations’ Earth Summit, RIO+20.

A dusk to dawn curfew has been imposed in Kaduna state and in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, keeping residents in doors for two days, as security agents battle to restore peace.

The president wass accompanied by his wife, two governors and a number of Ministers.

A wide range of criticism has greeted the president’s trip to the earth summit, with opposition party, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), describing the trip as the height of insensitivity and confused leadership.

“The decision by the President to travel two days after dozens of innocent Nigerians, including women and children, were killed or maimed by suicide bombers in Kaduna state, is a “sign of insensitive and confused leadership” the party stated.

Also, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) condemned trip to Brazil, saying the trip was like desertion of duty despite the “gloomy atmosphere pervading the country.”

As Nigerians lament the abrupt departure of President Goodluck Jonathan for Brazil in the middle of violence and counter-violence in the North, SaharaReporters has gathered that the Nigerian ruler arrived at his destination with 116 men and women, the largest national delegation, contrary to his pledge in January to travel at less weight and expense.

Our sources say the team is made up of:
• 25 personal aides
• 18 aides of Patience Jonathan
• 2 members of the National Assembly
• 5 Ministers
• 2 Governors, and
• 63 officials from the Ministries of Enviroment, Foreign Affairs, National Planning and Petroleum Resources.

The junket will continue for Mr. Jonathan next week Thursday when he will be in Brussels for the World Customs Conference, scheduled for June 28-30. He will be taking with him about 57 people, including 26 aides, 3 Ministers, 8 members of the National Assembly, and 20 other government officials.

From June 25 to 29, Mrs. Jonathan will be in Maryland, United States, accompanied by 36 people: 18 aides, 4 wives of Governors, and 14 friends and associates.

Nigerian political parties yesterday lambasted Mr. Jonathan’s decision to leave for Brazil, just hours after violence and counter-violence had reportedly resulted in over 74 dead and hundreds injured. On Sunday, the president called on God to intervene in the violence.

But he has also promised to see to the end of the Islamic militant group militant Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati Wal-Jihad, widely-known as Boko Haram, this month. After he made that pledge in April, the militants promised to make June a bloody month in order to prove that Jonathan has no power over them. Some helpless Christians have in the past few days resorted to reprisal attacks against Muslims.

Only yesterday, as Jonathan hopped on one of his gleaming new executive jets and left the chaos in Nigeria behind, Boko Haram notified SaharaReporters that it would launch even more devastating attacks on churches and government buildings in the coming days.

The group’s contact person said Boko Haram had line up about 300 suicide bombers to attack churches in Southern Kaduna and in Plateau State in its determination to exact considerable revenge for the Muslims killed in Christian reprisals in the last few days.

The lawmakers say the President and the security chiefs need to answer questions regarding the growing insecurity and crises in the North

The House of Representatives passed a historic resolution Tuesday, summoning President Goodluck Jonathan over excerbating violence that has gripped the nation for more than a year.

Federal lawmakers usually mandate the appearance of government ministers and other officials, while the president's address before the National Assembly holds annually during budget presentation, and occasionally during the visit of some international dignataries.

This time, the president is to officially brief the lawmakers on the current state of insecurity mainly in northern states.

He is to appear with his defence chiefs.

The date for his appearance has however not been named, meaning the lawmakers may allow Mr. Jonathan the discretion of choosing a date in line with his schedule.
