Nairaland GeneralSafety Tips While Using The Road by scubed(op): 1:29pm On Dec 20, 2013
Identify Yourself

Run with proper ID, and carry a cell phone with emergency contacts taped to its back while using the road.

Pretend You’re Invisible

Safety Tips While Using The Road Don’t assume a driver sees you. In fact, imagine that a driver can’t see you, and behave accordingly.

Crossing At A Zebra Crossing

While using the zebra crossing, be watchful of reckless road users.

Do not cross until it is safe to cross the whole road.

Wait on the Pavement near the Edge and Wait for all traffic to stop before you start to cross.

After traffic has completely stopped from both sides, walk across on the black and white stripes.

Keep looking all round and listening because a driver might not have seen you.

Be careful when crossing cycles, rickshaws and carts. They might be traveling slowly but they do walk only on the pavement or footpath.

Check the direction in which the traffic is going.

Safety Tips While Using The Road Always remember Traffic will be flowing in more than one lane.

Wait Until It Is Safe

Wait patiently and let the traffic pass.

Cross when there is a safe gap and you are sure there is enough time

Don’t cross if you are not sure

Face traffic.

It’s easier to see, and react to, oncoming cars. And cars will see you more clearly too.

Beware of high-risk drivers.

Steer clear of potential problem areas like entrances to parking lots, bars, and restaurants, where there may be heavy traffic.

Mind Your Manners

Safety Tips While Using The Road At a stop sign or light, wait for the driver to wave you through—then acknowledge with your own polite wave. That acknowledgement will make the driver feel more inclined to do it again for the next walker or runner. Use hand signals (as you would on a bicycle) to show which way you plan to turn.

WebmastersSocial Media Habits That Will Rock 2014 by scubed(op): 1:13pm On Dec 20, 2013
The presence of YouTube will remain relevant in the year 2014 in the Social media world, YouTube has been consistently excellent in the past years and brands seem to be thriving well using this toolbox. It is projected that video will continue their upward ascent in the social media marketing toolbox hierarchy. Applications like Vine and Instagram are all evidence that videos will continue to be trendy and useful for brands

Social Media Habits That Will Rock 2014The Little Decline of Facebook And The Rise Of Twitter

Facebook has been the king of social media so far, at least for the past 3 years. Facebook has over a billion users, a populous country itself. This is not an axiom, as there are convincing figures to back this up. Though there is no false that many other social media platforms have emerged and are giving Facebook a healthy challenge. However, Twitter’s growth in the year 2014 looks certain as it looks like the giant social media platform is all out to overthrow Facebook. With its recent initial public offering and stock performance out of the gate, look for Twitter to continue to become truly mainstream in 2014 and become the next billion-user platform. Little wonder every company is trying to build a strong presence on Twitter.

News Feed Delivering News

Facebook recently changed its Edge Rank algorithm to benefit traditional publishers. And there will not be an inch of surprise when Twitter and Google+ follow this as well in the year 2014. Therefore increasing our feeds deliver news. LinkedIn, through its Influencers and Pulse platforms and its algorithm, has made a good news product. People now get their business news and insights through LinkedIn feed. This act is in favour of publishers, thereby, we will not be surprised when many business owners think and act like publishers in the year 2014.

The Relevance Of Content Sharing

Businesses of all shapes and sizes are now investing time and resources in creating and sharing content on the social web. The trend is changing, unlike now, businesses feel they don’t believe they need the use of social media in marketing their content. For people who feel the social web is too buzzy, should be expecting more in the year 2014. Businesses cannot afford to be left out of the social media ‘drama’. Therefore businesses need to create better, valuable and shareable content in order to be separated from the crowd in the year 2014, so to benefit the reward of social media.

Music/RadioWho Is The Boss; D'banj Or 2face by scubed(op): 3:13pm On Dec 19, 2013
Both Legends do not look like individuals that are ready to slow down their game anytime soon, as they keep coming out better and sharper, a concern for the coming upcoming artists, you might say? LOL! Yeah! You can say that again. These names are brands that sell across Africa and the world. 2face and Dbanj are having a successful career so far, and they are both popular among fans and in the media, another reason it is cumbersome to easily point out the best between them.

Who is the boss; D'banj or 2FaceWho owns the crowd, the stage and hearts of Africans, and the world in general? Is it the husband of Annie Macaulay, 2Face or the entertainer, D’banj?

Both names are household names in the Nigerian Music Industry and these names will sell millions of tickets anywhere and anytime in Africa, and it does not appear this is about to change anytime soon.

They are arguably one of the greatest things to come out of Nigeria. 2Face is popular for his gifted adorable voice while D’banj is known for his great entertainment skills and dexterity while on stage.

D’banj was born in Zaria, Kaduna State on June 9, 1980 (33) to a military officer who commanded an artillery regiment and a church dignitary mother who hailed from Sagamu, Ogun State. I can hear you saying “How did the koko master become ‘notoriously wild’” Hehehe! I am sure only the entertainer himself can answer you.

D’banj is known for his friendly smiles and acts, and his mastery while on stage cannot be questioned as his performances are always scintillating.

2Face Idibia, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer. He is one of the most hip pop artists in Nigeria, Africa. 2face is not a new name in the ears of many music lovers as he was part of the defunct Plantashun Boyz. The Plateau born singer was born on September 18, 1975 (38).

Many people that have met or had the opportunity of dealing with 2Face have all admitted that he is humble, easy going and his breathtaking voice and lyrics are reasons everyone do not seem to get tired of him

Who do you prefer? Is it the koko master or 2baba, and please do share your reasons.

Nairaland GeneralNigeria Through Eyes Of A ‘keke’ Driver by scubed(op): 12:54pm On Dec 19, 2013
Commuting with tricycles –‘Keke’ has become a part of life for most people living in Lagos. It has somewhat, replaced motorcycles-Okada, after its ban from major roads in Lagos.

That being said, I did not think that my 30mins journey from Ogba to Berger via ‘Keke’ would be anything extraordinary or out of this world .However, it turned out to be extraordinarily surreal, I saw the realistic impact of the downward sloping direction of the economic state of Nigeria, through the eyes of Mr.Ihiezuru-a ‘Keke’ driver who commutes from Ogba to Berger.

He has a family, who he fends for with an average income of N1000 daily. This would have been reasonably fair, if he did not have to ‘settle’ the ever ready to fight street urchins, policemen and LASTMA Officials. Unfortunately for me, I had my NYSC Uniform on, I seemed to be the object of his frustrations, because he kept asking me why I was serving Nigeria(like I had a choice) and if Nigeria will serve me. He went on his lamentations about how his younger brother graduated years ago with the best grades in school and is yet to get a good job.

Watching him closely, I noticed that his behavioral pattern went from angry to very angry and frustrated at different points .He was either cursing at other commuters on the road, or shouting insults at anyone standing in his way. He was obviously a very troubled man.

I realized at that point that there are a lot of angry drivers on our roads, they are always in a hurry to make their way through the suffocating traffic in Lagos to earn an extra ‘take home’-thus their irrational behavior .A psychologically stable individual would behave in a certain way, in a certain situation and you are probably wondering –why would this driver stop in the middle of the road to pick passengers? Well, the answer is really simple-Most Commercial drivers in Lagos are psychologically unstable.

This is largely because the economic situation of Nigeria which seems to be getting worse by the year has had a larger impact on the poor than on the other categories of individuals. Unfortunately, most commercial drivers are poor; they feel the daily brunt of the increase in the prices of goods, the increase in the price of fuel, the hazards of commuting , the frustration of traffic jams, the attitudes of various passengers, the harassment of street urchins, police men and very recently LASTMA officials.

I have concluded that, the explanation of the somewhat irrational behavior of most commercial bus drivers in Lagos is basically frustration. They are frustrated by the many fragments of the declining economic state of Nigeria-directly and indirectly.

This explanation seems simple, but it is the fact, do you think this is farfetched?

BusinessHow Content Marketing Can Make Your Business Bigger by scubed(op): 12:28pm On Dec 19, 2013
Content marketing is not an ad on a billboard, newspaper or a one-page spread in a magazine. The idea central to content marketing is that a brand must give something valuable to get something valuable in return.

How Content Marketing Can Make Your Business BiggerBasically, content marketing is the art of communicating with your customers and prospects without selling. It is non-interruption marketing. Instead of pitching your products or services, you are delivering information that makes your buyer more intelligent.

Content marketing is a marketing technique of creating and distributing relevant and valuable content to attract, acquire, and engage a clearly defined and understood target audience – with the objective of driving profitable customer action.

The ability to create relevant, accurate and valuable content is imperative. This will surely help in modifying and changing consumers’ behaviour to your advantage. And this is an ongoing process that is best integrated into your overall marketing strategy, and it focuses on owning media, not renting it.

According to a report, a research carried out reveals that 80% percent of business decision makers prefer to get company information in a series of articles versus an advertisement. Seventy percent say content marketing makes them feel closer to the sponsoring company, while 60 percent say that company content helps them make better product decisions. Think of this – what if your customers looked forward to receiving your marketing? What if when they received it, via print, email, website, they spent 15, 30, 45 minutes with it?

Sharing good content and making use of good strategy is beneficial for both customers and businesses, as customers tend to submit their loyalty to business organizations that shares content with it. However, as a business owner, one must not be carried away as it goes above just sharing good contents, because the consistent sharing of these contents is as well important.

How Content Marketing Can Make Your Business Bigger“If we run an ad without context around it, that’s not good for anyone. The lines are clearly drawn so everyone knows what they are getting into.” Grant Jones

Content marketing and sharing is not just about the present but also the future, as it is predicted that the successes of many businesses will be affected adversely by how they share their contents

EducationLibraries Have Become Integral Part Of Human Existence by scubed(op): 1:27pm On Dec 18, 2013
As different societies are developing, so are the roles of the libraries. Libraries Have Become Integral Part Of Human ExistenceA library is a place where people can check out books for free, use the internet, or hold a workshop. It is also the first place a child may delve into a book or spend a few hours roaming the book aisles. In this sense, libraries have always been synonymous with education.

The library is invariably a part of a wider organization- an arm of government, university, school, research institute or business concern as the case may be. Its budget therefore is negotiated with its parent organization. The parent body is therefore the proprietor that takes full responsibility for its funding. Academic libraries are financed from the budgets of their parents’ institutions. These funds usually cover only the current expenditure. But sometimes, libraries are supported by government ministries particularly Ministry of Education (Akporhonor, 2005

The challenges libraries are facing in being operational and effective are distressing, with the onset of new technology such as the iPad, and ebook readers, along with the lack of funding, it is difficult to continue to operate.

Libraries Have Become Integral Part Of Human ExistenceIt is very crucial to fund libraries effectively so as to make these libraries possess the resources that will enable it meet its goals. A library is expected to be in a beautiful building and surroundings, possess well trained staff and modem information storage and retrieval systems can only be appreciated if wonderful services are rendered to library users.

Like water and air, libraries have become an integral part of human existence. Often called the memory of human race, libraries are supposed to have on their shelves the records of almost everything which man has thought, dreamt of and invented. All these demand that, academic libraries should be adequately funded to be able to carryout these functions (Ifidon 1992)

“Will Libraries Go Into Extinction Anytime Soon?” Many people around the world have been forced to ask the question, considering the onset of new technologies and the ever growing internet base. However, analysts and even librarians have all rule out such possibility, as they argue that the library existence will continue to remain relevant and ever growing as long as human exist.

It will not be wrong to think that the future of libraries will be determined by the present and continuous state of its funding.

EducationASUU Gives Students Marching Orders; As It Calls Off The Strike by scubed(op): 12:02pm On Dec 18, 2013
ASUU branch Chairmen, secretaries, coordinators, past leaders and the national executive members of the body, including 56 members from 52 universities were all in attendance for the long closed indoor meeting ASUU held yesterday.

ASUU Gives Students Marching Orders; As It Calls Off The Strike
An Empty Lecture Room

“We expect the students to resume and expect their members to go back to class immediately after the congress meeting and we expect the government to keep to the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU),” Dr. Ogninaka stated.

SUU Chairman, University of Lagos Chapter, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka told Channels Television that the union decided to suspend the strike after a marathon meeting held in Minna, Niger State capital on Monday.

The Nigerian university lecturers have been on strike July 1, 2013 to demand full implementation of the 2009 agreement it reached with the Federal Government on conditions of service for university lecturers, and funding of infrastructural development in Nigerian universities.

Among ASUU’s demands are the upward review of the retirement age for professors from 65 to 70; adequate funding to revitalise the epileptic university system; and to increase the budgetary allocations to the education sector by 26%.

The different chapters of ASUU are expected to hold congress meetings on Wednesday, following which academic activities will resume in the universities.

Interestingly, ASUU has registered some new demands; the fresh demands include a non-victimisation clause, provision and deposit of N200 billion infrastructure revitalisation funds in an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) details of disbursement of the funds and payment of salary arrears which has accrued to the teachers during the strike.

It is gathered that the agreement between ASUU and the FG, which is reportedly due for renegotiation in 2014 was reached barely 24 hours after the Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe presented a proof of payment of N200 billion into an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria

BusinessThe Menace Of Information Explosion by scubed(op): 11:53am On Dec 18, 2013
Information explosion has made quality and useful information unidentifiable; therefore it is understandable when people gather the incorrect information. Therefore, before acquiring information especially via the internet, one needs to cross examine the information properly. You could do the followings:

Call in experts to sift the corn from the shaft i.e. knowledge managers to identify relevant information. Serious self-examination of what is right what is wrong and what information is required subsequently.

Information explosion is the rapid increase in the amount of published information. The Menace Of Information Explosion

Since “information” in electronic media is often used synonymously with “data”, the term information explosion is closely related to the concept of data flood (also dubbed data deluge). Sometimes the term information flood is used as well. All of those basically boil down to the ever-increasing amount of electronic data exchanged per time unit.

Nowadays, people are not visiting their doctors when they have health issues, they consult the internet, students do not take time to consult their books or visit the libraries often when given assignments, because the internet simply has all the answers to their questions if properly sought.

The Menace Of Information ExplosionInformation has brought some defects, according to a school of thought; Long-range thinking stops because virtually all information needed is available in large quantity for a user. Information Explosion also makes one think of the past and immediate future without adequate attention to the present. The avalanche of information available especially the uncensored ones there could be information contamination which could lead to wrong decision making and serious mistakes. Too much information leads to brain freeze or fatigue. And the response to this could even be information avoidance.

Despite pointing at some of Information explosion flaws, it will be wrong not to laud this era (Information Explosion era); as the era has adversely affected the lives and minds of people. Information is now at everyone’s fingertips, and the advantage of that is overwhelming. However, one needs to be cautious in looking and making use of these information, because as pointed earlier, not every information on the internet is right.

HealthExercise And Its Relevance by scubed(op): 12:58pm On Dec 17, 2013
Exercise as a prescription; it is very affordable and extremely effective.
Dr. John Anderson, President of medicine and science at the American Diabetes Association articulates that “Weight loss isn’t the only way exercise benefits diabetes. Exercise helps drive glucose out of the bloodstream and into cells where it’s used for fuel, making diabetes less independent on insulin to process their meals”.
Exercise and its RelevanceThere might be a few discouraging reasons to slow down or not to involve in exercise. Some people complain of always being busy while others complain of unavailability of affordable gyms. There also are the concerns about injuries or falls. If you’ve never exercised before, you may not know where to begin. Perhaps you think you’re too young, old or frail, or that exercise is boring or simply not for you.
Exercise is the key to staying strong, energetic, and healthy as you get older. And it can even be fun too. Irrespective of your age or physical appearance, exercise is very good for you; exercise is good for the brain, exercise can boost your mood and self-confidence, for those having problems with sleep, exercise improves your sleep. Exercise is an effective form of fighting diseases. Exercise develops your heart and cardiovascular system.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO);
In order to improve cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, bone health, and cardiovascular and metabolic health biomarkers;
Children and youth aged 5–17 should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity daily.
Amounts of physical activity greater than 60 minutes provide additional health benefits.
Most of the daily physical activity should be aerobic. Vigorous-intensity activities should be incorporated, including those that strengthen muscle and bone, at least 3 times per week.
Adults aged 18–64 should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or do at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity.
Aerobic activity should be performed in bouts of at least 10 minutes duration.
For additional health benefits, adults should increase their moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity to 300 minutes per week, or engage in 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity.
Muscle-strengthening activities should be done involving major muscle groups on 2 or more days a week.
Exercise and its RelevanceIt is very important to see an exercise physiologist to enlighten one on the best form of exercise to involve in. For example, people with neuropathy, who have numbness in their feet should avoid the treadmill and opt instead for swimming. People with eye complications should steer clear of strength exercises because it could increase bleeding in the eye. Health is wealth

GamingPS4 Arrives, Gamers Can Now Go Public by scubed(op): 12:46pm On Dec 17, 2013
Finally, the much anticipated PS4 is here, and this is no longer a preview. The PS4 is finally in our world. Sony’s shiny new $400 PS4 just hit the shelves on Friday, and what has it got?
PS4 arrives, Gamers Can Now Go PublicThe PlayStation provides it lovers with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities and laudable second screen features. PS4 centre on gamers, enabling them to play when, where and how they want. PS4 allows the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a system that is tuned specifically to their needs.
The PlayStation comes with many interesting and lovely features; PS4 allows you stream your gameplay via the websites Twitch and Upstream, this allows you turn your private gameplay session into a public broadcast. This isn’t just an online multiplayer game play, I must add, this is as if the whole world could sit on your couch with you and watch you play through knack or what have you.
Steam has convinced gamers they don’t need disks. There are reports that The PS4 might be the best of last generation’s consoles and, as such, perhaps it deserves to be looked at as Sony’s last stand on the doorway to a wonderful future.

The sad part of the launch of this PS4 is that it does not allow gamers to play PS3 games on the PS4, saddening news for many that do not want to spend around $60 updating their collections. However, a glimpse of hope appears for owners of very recent PS3 games. For $10 they can download updates to these titles on the PS4 that require the PS3 disk to run. Last Friday over 1 million PS4s were sold, according to a report. There is no doubt that before the end of this week, we have going to have a lot of high digits.
It is understandable that many gamers are still having one or two issues accessing and making use of the PS4, and Sony has not been shy from apologizing and working on these problems. On the positive, Gamers can now go public thanks to Sony’s innovation.

BusinessThe State Of Customer Service In The Banking Sector by scubed(op): 12:09pm On Dec 17, 2013
The Banking sector has been successful in convincing many urban dwellers in Nigeria that the Bank is undoubtedly the safest and healthiest place to save money. Many banks have sprung up over the time; the Governor of the Central Bank, Mallam Sanusi Lamido has invested a lot of resources to make the Nigeria Banking sector a laudable one as the Banking sector has witnessed a couple of reforms lately.
Customers have cited excellent customer service as a major reason for continued banking relationships. Customers are concerned about staff attitude and efficiency in complaints or enquiries as the most important core issues. And this calls for no surprise, as many of these well-known banks continue to empower their banks with staff that have training in relationship management and other requisite technical capabilities to enhance the quality of service delivery.
The State Of Customer Service In The Banking SectorThe issue of queues at bank branches is still a headache for many in Nigeria. Bank branches need to involve different approaches which may vary from branch layout redesign, deploying more ATMs or assigning more resources to branches as required or as one customer suggested
Some bank customer services are poor; as you have limited seats available for people, the queues are long, the air conditioning service are not in proper shape, the ATM machines are inactive and you could spend over an hour just to get any of the bank official attending to you.

The customer service in these banks ranges, we have over 20 banks in the country. The popular banks in Nigeria are: Zenith Bank, Citi Bank, Access Bank, United Bank For Africa, Union Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, First Bank, Fidelity Bank, Diamond Bank, Monument Bank, Ecobank , Mainstreet Bank, Skye Bank, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Standard Chartered Bank,Keystone Bank, Unity Bank, J.P Morgan Chase.
There is a report that says Younger customers (under – 30) are less loyal, they are more likely to change banks compared to customers above 60. Considering this report, it is expected that many of these banks will invest handsomely in building a good and lasting relationship with this age group; as they are a group that the Banks can’t afford to lose.
Which of those banks do you use? And how do you rate your bank’s customer service in Nigeria?

Systrom said Instagram has more than 150 million users – up from 80 million at the start of this year – and more than half of them use it every day. Kevin Systrom is the co-founder and CEO of Instagram.
Instagram has stepped up its game in the present competitive market. The market keeps getting better with innovations and ideas as expected.
Instagram Introduces 'Instagram Direct'“From how you capture photos and videos to the way you start conversations through likes and comments, we built Instagram Direct to feel natural to the Instagram experience you already know.” Instagram
Before now, the only way to share content on Instagram was to post it to your feed, and these become visible to all who follow you or locked for people you approve the content to see.

Instagram said, “There are moments in our lives that we want to share, but that will be the most relevant only to a smaller group of people – an inside joke between friends captured on the go, a special family moment or even just one more photo of your new puppy. Instagram Direct helps you share these moments.
Instagram now allows it users to share photos and videos with up to 15 people rather than everyone who follow them on Facebook-owned photo-sharing app. The new feature is called Instagram Direct, this feature is available for Android and Apple Smarthphones.
“We built Instagram Direct to feel natural to the Instagram experience you already know. When you open Instagram, you’ll know see a new icon in the top right corner of your home feed. Tap it to open your inbox where you’ll see photos and videos that people have sent to you. To send a photo or video to specific people, tap the camera button to enter the same simplw photo or video capture and editing screens. At the top of the share screen, you’ll see the option to share with your followers (“Followers”) or to send to specific people (“Direct”). To send using Direct tap the names of the people you want to send your photo or video to, write your caption, tap “send” and you’re done.” Instagram
The Co founder and CEO of Instagram. Kevin Systrom says that marketers can potentially use the messaging feature to college images for contests. Less than two hours later, Gap did just that, soliciting comments on an Instagram post and messaging the first 15 commenters with a limited edition Gap product.Instagram Introduces 'Instagram Direct'
“When you look at Facebook’s wider strategy with new services and features, the first goal isn’t necessarily monetisation,” he said.
“It’s building on maintaining scale. With these new features, it’s about maintaining and growing the audience.” Kevin Systrom
Though analysts have raised eyebrows; doubt that Instagram direct messages have much potential for advertising. That is left to be answered.

TravelIndia Makes A U-turn On Gay Sex Marriage Ban by scubed(op): 11:11am On Dec 12, 2013
Some people in India are still yet to understand the change in decision. Many people including legal experts and activists feel the country’s highest court should have upheld the landmark decision, which had been seen as a crucial first step in empowering India’s gay marriage.
India Makes A U-Turn On Gay Sex Marriage BanIn 2009 the Delhi High Court in India ruled unconstitutional a section of the penal code dating back to 1860 that prohibits “carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal” and lifted the ban for consenting adults.
Recently, India has been struggling with the issues about the safety of women within its borders following the gang rape and murder of a student in the capital last December. There have been different records of rape in the country, and this has been a headache for the people of India and the government in recent times.
“We hold that Section 377 IPC does not suffer from the vice of unconstitutionality and the declaration made by the Division Bench of the High court is legally unsustainable,” the two supreme-court judges who presided over the case said in their 98-page judgment, released late Wednesday.

“The judgment would need to be studied, understood, internalized,” said Manish Tewari, India’s information and broadcast minister, in a televised interview. “And if at all there is something Parliament needs to do in this matter, Parliament would definitely look into it
India Makes A U-Turn On Gay Sex Marriage BanPresently, many people across India had taken to the social media and street to protest against a surprising Supreme Court verdict on Wednesday reversing the judgment that had decriminalized gay sex in India.
The crowd gathered at the Jantar Mantar, a preferable point for demonstrators in Delhi, India’s capital. Among the crowd are young men and women expressing their frustration and disappointment at the Supreme court ruling; waving multicoloured flags and wearing black bandanas.
“It’s a black day for us,” said Anjali Gopalan, the executive director of the Naz Foundation, a Delhi-based NGO that works on sexual health and led the consortium of advocacy groups defending the 2009 judgment.
“I feel exhausted right now, thinking that we have been set back by 100 years.”
Vikram Seth, the Indian prize-winning novelist, said he was hopeful. “Today is a great day for prejudice and inhumanity and a bad day for law and love. But law develops and love is resilient and prejudice will be beaten back,” he told the NDTV news channel.
“I wasn’t a criminal yesterday but I’m certainly a criminal today … But I do not propose to take the permission of their lordships when deciding who to love and who to make love with
Expectedly, some people are in total support of the supreme court ruling, Tanuja Thankur, a Hindu spiritual leader, who is among the supporter of the ruling, told the guardian “When two people of same sex indulge in a physical activity, it goes against nature. And anything unnatural is criminal in nature.”
India Makes A U-Turn On Gay Sex Marriage BanHe further said homosexuality was “happening because society is not doing enough spiritual practice”.
What is your take; do you agree that with the protesters’ argument or you feel Tanuja Thankur, who represents the support of this ruling is right?

BusinessThe Rate Of Unemployment Is Unacceptable by scubed(op): 10:55am On Dec 12, 2013
The rate of unemployment is alarming in this part of the world, and it is shameful and pathetic that the government seems to be clueless on how to tackle this menace called unemployment.
The Rate Of Unemployment Is Unacceptable
Unemployed Nigerians For INEC Exam In Nigeria
According to the senator, state of emergency has been declared in the power and water sectors among others, and it has worked out well.
“We still need to do more as even one percent rate is unacceptable as there cannot be any stability, peaceful environment and prosperity of any sort with youth unemployment,” he said
The Governor of Kwara state, Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed supported the lawmaker on his call for the State of emergency on youth unemployment.

“As the largest component of our population and the inheritors of the future, youths are our most vital resource. We must nurture, support, and prime them for productive engagement through appropriate training and tangible opportunities,” he said.
Not too long, a source that works for the government declared that there were more than 40 million Nigerians currently unemployed. This figure is not only frightening but saddening
Many people have questioned the Jonathan’s regime, they believe the government is lackadaisical in its fight against unemployment, and argue that the high rate of unemployment among the youths is the reason behind security insurgency, poor economic growth and low standard of living.

Many Nigerians have publicly argued that this body headed by Mr. Kolade is another plan of looting the public fund. So far, the body is yet to give a good account of it. However, it will be too early to write off Sure-P’s schemes, as the body admits it is facing some challenges in meeting its demands and it is working enormously in facing these challenges.

PoliticsUruguay Becomes The First Country To Legalise Marijuana Production by scubed(op): 5:54pm On Dec 11, 2013
Finally, Uruguay has passed the bill into law. Good news for lovers of pots, marijuana, cannabis, joint or whatever name you want to call it, as Uruguay has legalised the use of this drug and its production. The President, President Jose Mujica has been championing the legalization of this drug for some time now.
The government-sponsored bill was approved by 16-13 votes in the Senate; sixteen leftist senators of 29 voted in favour of the legislation, presented by the leftist ruling Broad Front and championed by President Jose Mujica who will sign it into law.
Uruguay Becomes The First Country to Legalise Marijuana ProductionUruguayans are now permitted to grow the drug without the fear of breaking the country’s law, or they can buy up to 40 grams per month from the government via pharmacies. Private clubs are also licensed to allow the consumption of marijuana by its customers, adding to the citizens’ existing rights to smoke it legally.
Consumers over the age of 18 will be able to grow their own marijuana, though no more than six plants per person.

“The war against drugs has failed,” said Senator Roberto Conde as he presented the bill to Congress, calling the legislation an “unavoidable response” to that failure.
“Marijuana is the illegal drug that is most consumed, fundamentally by young people, one that is perceived as extremely low risk and is easily obtained,” he said
MP Veronica Alonso of National Party in Uruguay has been against the legalization of marijuana.
“This doesn’t solve the problem of drug trafficking because if you want to solve that problem then shortly we will be talking about legalising and regulating cocaine which is the most important market,” she said

President Mujica Has Finally Won The Battle On Marijuana Legalisation
“There are a lot of doubts and the doubts are legitimate,” President Jose Mujica
And he continued by saying “But doubts shouldn’t paralyse us in trying new paths to deal with the problem that has gripped us,” adding: “You have to give it a chance.”
Dr Luis Gallo – who has been in medicine for 40 years – has been a key backer of the bill in the Senate.
“The consumer is currently part of a criminal cycle – be it organised crime or trafficking. That has had very grave social consequences for public security,” he said.
Dr Gallo says that there will be a national institute for the regulation of cannabis, which will be similar to the regulation of tobacco in the country.
It is confirmed that registered drug users should be able to start buying marijuana over the counter from licensed pharmacies in April.
Some countries like Canada, the Netherlands and Israel have legal programmes for growing medical cannabis, but do not allow its cultivation for recreational use; thereby, making Uruguay the first country to legalise the growing, sale and smoking of marijuana

HealthRoad Accidents And Traffic Fatalities by scubed(op): 1:29pm On Dec 10, 2013
Road accidents and reckless driving are not popular just in one country or continent, as it is a common challenge the world is facing. Though developed countries are battling these challenges much better than the under-developed ones and developing countries; perhaps the awareness level and different measures taken to curb these challenges are part of the reason for the differences.
There is no surprise that many African countries are top ranks among countries with the highest number of road accidents and fatalities.
Road Accidents And Traffic FatalitiesIt is imperative to note that some countries; underdeveloped and developing countries do not have access to good roads, therefore making the roads an enemy of the people and sadly responsible for maiming promising lives.
According to Goos, 1.3 million road deaths occur worldwide every year and more than 50 million people are seriously injured. There are 3,500 deaths a day or 150 every hour, and nearly three people get killed on the road every minute.

“Road danger is not just statistics, it causes a great deal of suffering for the people who have lost a loved one or who are handicapped. Road danger has a big impact in our lives,” Goos pointed out.
Driving takes a lot of responsibility and discipline, and it is sad that may road users do not know this, perhaps they do, but are just highly irresponsible to know how severe a little disobeying of the any traffic rule can be dangerous to their lives and others around them.
And if we continue with the present efforts’, the number of traffic fatalities worldwide will rise by 67 percent over the period of 2000 to 2020, 68 percent in the Middle East and North African region, and 144 percent in Southeast Asia and middle to low-income countries by 83 percent, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) prediction.
According to one research carried out by the World Health Organisation (WHO), out of 192 countries ranked, Nigeria has the second highest rate of road accidents.
It is imperative we all exercise caution during and we must all remember that there is danger in drinking and driving, and over speeding.

LiteratureWorld Leaders Converge In South Africa To Say Farewell To Madiba by scubed(op): 12:12pm On Dec 10, 2013
Heads of States are all descending to the greater soil of South Africa, the home of late Nelson Mandela. The likes of Barack Obama are already in South Africa to give an enormous farewell to Nelson Mandela; presenting the government with a security test, logistical challenges and protocol quiz all rolled into one.
Fortunately, today coincides with the UN designated Human Rights Day, the memorial service for Mandela in the 95,000-seat Soccer City stadium is the centrepiece of a week of mourning for the globally-admired statesman, who died on Thursday aged 95.
World Leaders And Dignitaries All In South Africa To Say Farewell To The Late Nelson MandelaThis ceremony will bring world leaders with differences together in a venue, and perhaps, this is the time for leaders with sour relationships to bury the hatchet and emulate the acts of the late Nelson Mandela.
The Nelson Mandela funeral will have more people in attendance than Pope John Paul’s funeral, which brought together 70 heads of state & 14 leaders of other regions,”

Brazil’s leader, Dilma Rousseff and French President Fraincois Hollande are also expected. Prince Charles of Britain will be in attendance representing the Queen, Queen Elizabeth II, Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas is also expected to be among top dignitaries expected.
Celebrities from the world of music, film, sports and TV will join other world leaders in paying tribute to Nelson Mandela. Annie Lennox, Bono, Oprah Winfrey, Naomi Campbell and Muhammed Ali are also all expected.
World Leaders Converge In South Africa To Say Farewell To Mandiba
Mandiba and Fmr. President Bill Clinton share a view from his old cell in Robben Island
The US and Cuba has long been locked in antagonism, and interesting to note that both leaders of these countries will be in attendance, Barack Obama and Raul Castro respectively.
It is expected that the antagonism that exist between these leaders will be on mute, and perhaps, this is an opportunity to bury the hatchet; a wonderful way of honouring the late Nelson Mandela.
Nelson Mandela served over 27 years in prison, initially on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor prison and Victor Verson Prison. Despite all what the late Nelson Mandela went through, it is still unbelievable that he focused his government on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. After elected as the president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
Ban Ki-moon, who will also deliver a tribute, visited the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Johannesburg on Monday.
“The world mourns the loss of Nelson Mandela, one of the towering figures of our time and indeed of any time,” he said. “We join together in sorrow for a mighty loss and in celebration of a mighty life.
The 95 year-old, Nelson Mandela was a symbol of hope and peace around the world and to millions.

Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe and former Prime Minister of England, Tony Blair are also going to be in attendance. The relationship between these two has been sour in the past years, the latter called Mugabe a dictator who should have been removed from power. While Mugabe has called Blair an imperialist and once told him to “go to hell”.

A Hashtag is a word or an unspaced phrase prefixed with the symbol #. It is a form of metadata tag. Short messages on microblogging and social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram may be tagged by putting “#” before important words or trending words(no spaces), either as they appear in a sentence or appended to it.
How Hashtags Have Integrated The Lives OF Everyday PeopleFor a few years, Hashtags have evolved from a simple symbol to one of today’s most valuable marketing tools, as giants social media networks embraces the use of Hashtags.
And it doesn’t stop there. Hashtags have integrated the lives of everyday people, every day. From a student’s Instagram pic to a celebrity tweet, the use of Hashtags have accelerated into mass popularity.
When a hashtag becomes popular on Twitter, it can become a “trend”. Big events in news, sports, and entertainment tend to quickly develop trends on social networking sites like Twitter.

No doubt Facebook is joining the likes of Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube, and other social media networks in the use of Hashtags; this backs the fact that businesses should be using Hashtags in their marketing strategies.
Hashtags have recently spread to the Facebook world. Facebook users are now allowed to add hashtags into their status updates, wall posts, and captions, allowing common topics on Facebook to be categorized the same way that they are on Twitter.
Debbie Swanson, a Freelance Marketing writer for Freelance Switch, describes the usefulness of Hashtags clearly by stating, “Think of Hashtags as you would an index to a book: if you wanted to find out how to cook lasagna, you would flip to a cookbook’s index to find the term lasagna. If you wanted to use Twitter to learn about lasagna, you would type #lasagna into Twitter search box”
Hashtags are very important, as Twitter is a testimony to the fact, and there is no lie that the uses of Hashtags are the key part of its popularity.
