If they were practicing true partnership, it should never have come to that. Even if they both have designated roles in their marriage, they would always support each other when the other person can’t do their assigned role (which she did do but almost too late). They would do it timely to avoid stress and embarrassment like this.

I wouldn’t call her useless though because with some of these kinds of marriages, the rigidly set gender roles means you do this, I do this and no one helps the other.
