Education / Delta State University Accused Of Extorting N4,000 From Students Since 2017 by Seeksnigeria: 11:09am On Dec 28, 2021
Update from SIGGY .ng

A publishing agency situated in the heart of delta state named Tondek Agency Limited has accused Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka of collecting N4,000, from students for a school magazine without giving them the magazine, Siggy reports.

The Vice-Chancellor, Delta State University, Abraka, Prof Andy Egwunyenga had through a press statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Eddy Agbure, denied the collection of N4,000 from students for the production of school magazine as insinuated by an online publication.

Egwunyenga maintained that there was never a time his administration that the institution exploited students or demanded any payment of N4,000 for the production of the school magazine, as insinuated by the said online publication.

However, the agency which was in charge of the production of the school magazine since 2017 urged Prof Egwunyenga to stop denying it, noting that it had available evidence of payments made by students to prove their claims.

Speaking to our correspondent on Monday in Asaba, the Director of Contacts, Tondek Agency, Anthony Arugba alleged that the school had been collecting the magazine fee since 2017, but declined to remit to the agency for the past two academic sessions.

He said, “We were surprised to hear the VC of the institution deny that the school did not collect N4,000 for the school magazine.

“They have been collecting the money since we introduced the magazine in 2017, as I speak to you now, the school is collecting N4,000 without remitting to the agency that printed the magazine for two years, and these students were not given the magazine. This is extortion and a fraudulent act.

“The N4,000 school magazine fee is one of the pre-requisites for collecting the school certificate or for clearance of admission, so students are still paying the money but we’re not given the magazine

“We have a receipt dated December 2, 2021, but they have devised another means of paying the N4,000 through bank draft to cover up their tracks”.

The Vice-Chancellor, Delta State University, Abraka, Prof Andy Egwunyenga while speaking to our correspondent on the development, described DELSU @25 publication as fraudulent.

He said, “When I came in as VC, I discovered fraud in the publication of the magazine, immediately I directed Students to stop paying for the DELSU @ 25 magazine, especially at a time when DELSU is about 30 years.

“I don’t want to talk much because I have already directed my lawyers to put their documents together, we are going to court for the blackmail”.

Update from SIGGY .ng

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, over the weekend paid a visit to the family of late Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100 Level Microbiology student of the University of Benin who was gruesomely murdered in a church in 2020

Omozuwa's death caused national outrage last year after her body was found inside a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Edo state after she had been raped, Siggy reports.

Speaking during his visit to the family, Governor Obaseki said;

''Uwaila did not die in vain. The federal and state governments have taken stiffer actions against gender-based violence. We are here to continue to celebrate her life as we continue to fight against gender-based violence.

"Her death was the reason for the establishment of gender-based violence committee. The Edo State Government has put mechanisms in place to fight gender-based violence-related offenses.

"Her death led to the promulgation of the Violence Against Persons (VAP) law in the state and people are now aware of the crime.”

Education / NDU Orders All Final-year Students Back To School For Project Defense by Seeksnigeria: 7:08pm On Dec 25, 2021
Update from SIGGY .ng

There is an uproar in Niger Delta University (NDU), Bayelsa, as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel Gowon Edoumiekumo, orders over 3,000 students to leave their Christmas and New Year break and come for their defense.

According to a report, most of the affected final-year students were finding it difficult to comply due to the distance of their houses from the school.

The report went further to reveal that stakeholders made up of traditional rulers, parents and sponsors of students at the Niger Delta University (NDU) have sent a Save-Our Soul message to the state governor, Senator Douye Diri to intervene and prevail on the Vice-Chancellor to rescind his directive.

The letter reads:

“We call on the state governor to prevail on Professor Samuel Gowon Edoumiekumo to rescind his order and for common sense to prevail over his spontaneous directive that all final-year students and lecturers must return to the university to commence their project defence on Wednesday, 29th December 2021.

“We, as peace-loving stakeholders in the institution, are calling on the Governor to use his good office and the Spirit of Christmas which is celebrated around the world to prevail on Prof. Gowon to immediately withdraw his spontaneous directive and allow the students and lecturers to spend the holiday seasons with their families until early January 2022 when universities across the country will resume.

“The Christmas Spirit and season is a time of love, giving, family unification, and much more which has been celebrated for centuries. People around the world travel to unite and spend time with their family members during the Christmas Holiday Season. Therefore, to spontaneously demand that students and lecturers return to school in the midst of the holiday season to commence their studies is unconscionable and unchristian-like.

“Across the country and globally, schools are closed for the Christmas Season and are expected to resume in early January 2022. It is no secret that Nigerian roads are unsafe during the Christmas season. Many families do not even have the financial resources to transport their children back to school within this holiday season as they have made such plans for January 2022. We are calling on the Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri to urgently come to our aid.”

However, a senior lecturer of the school who spoke on condition of anonymity argued that the Vice Chancellor’s intention was good and in order.

In his words: “What we are trying to do is to ensure that the institution meets up with its calendar year and to ensure that the final-year students meet up with the service year.”

According to one of his sisters who announced his disapperance, the 24-year-old student from the department of Agricultural Engineering was last seen on Monday, November 22.

"Adekunle Sodiq is a student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, and studies Agric Engineering. He has been missing since Monday, November 22, 2021, and all efforts to locate him have proven abortive,” she narrated.

One of his closest friends, Evan Emmanuel, is believed to be a person of interest along with his dad. We thought both of them knew the missing boy's whereabouts due to their action and attitude during the search.

Evan Emmanuel also disappeared when he was asked to follow the missing boy's dad to the police station to report the incident. Afterward, we located Evan's dad and he stated that his son, Evan has relocated to Ghana. This is someone who is also a student of OOU; a 300 level student just abandoned his education like that and relocated to Ghana.

His father was asked and instructed to report to the station but instead sent his lawyer, the lawyer was ordered by the police to produce his client unfailingly by Wednesday.”

She added that Sodiq’s closest friend, Evan Emmanuel, who is the main suspect in his brother’s disappearance fled to Ghana on December 1.

She describes the governor of Lagos state as an iron man leader, saying the state has progressed in education, health, housing, fracture, transportation, youth, and women’s development.

In her words: “Mr. Governor, I commend your team for excellent leadership, as well as proactiveness in critical sectors. In education, the State Government has embarked on revamping schools and delivering new ones to improve access. This effort has been complemented with massive innovative programs, such as EKO EXCEL, Lagos Learns Together, Read Loud, EKO Digital School, and job initiative.

These laudable programmes have impacted on students, teachers and the out-of-school learners, as the initiatives have improved teaching and learning with excellent outcome. With the deployment of technology, I can say teaching techniques across Lagos schools are no longer what they used to be. The success of these programmes is evident in the performance of students in their academic.”

Further speaking, Jemimah solicited for more funding for her school, and schools where students learn under harsh circumstances.

She also asked the Lagos state governor to support her parents in order to help her realise her future dreams.

The one-day governor harped on the need to commit more investment in digital literacy across public schools in the State, urging Sanwo-Olu to ensure the metropolitan fibre being laid across Lagos drops in public schools as promised.
