Education / Osun Traditionalists Storm OAU As They Protest Against The New VC (VIDEO) by Seeksnigeria: 4:12pm On Mar 21, 2022
Update from SIGGY .ng

Following the announcement by the management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), of the appointment of Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire as its new Vice-Chancellor, some osun traditionalists on Monday morning stormed the institution's premises to protest against this development, Siggy reports.

The protesters, whose grouse is the appointment of a non-native of the town as the vice chancellor of the OAU disrupted vehicular movement in and out of the campus during the protest.

The protesters said they were not hoodlums nor thieves but they were at the university gate to register their displeasure about the alleged marginalisation of indigenes of the town, who were qualified and competent to head the university.

They said, “We are asking the Council of Obafemi Awolowo University to allow an Ife Indigene to head this campus.”

The protesters asked students and members of staff to go back home, adding that Ife indigenes were being enslaved on the campus and it was time for them to rule.

The Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife had on Thursday announced the appointment of a Professor of Agricultural Economics from the university’s Faculty of Agriculture, Adebayo Bamire, as the new vice-chancellor.

It has been seen that some Osun worshippers launch a massive attack on Oau in order to voice their opposition to the new VC.

The council’s chairman, Osear Udoji, who made the announcement, said Bamire defeated 19 others who applied for the job to emerge the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the university.

The appointment of Bamire was greeted with protest by the indigenes, who trooped out to reject the appointment

The leader of the protesters, Bimbo Afolabi, had on Thursday said Ife community was displeased with decision of the Governing Council of the university to appoint a non-native of Ife as VC despite their plea for an opportunity to produce VC for the first time in the history of the institution

Recall that there were similar agitations over the appointment of VC for the university in the past.

However, Prof. Anthony Elujoba, an indigene of Ife was appointed as an acting vice chancellor following the rejection of Prof. Ayobami Salami, who was announced by the Governing Council but many workers in the university opposed his appointment.

They claimed that Salami was installed by the then VC, Prof. Bantale Omole, to cover his alleged misdeeds while in office and the process was started all over again. Elujoba was appointed in the interim capacity.

At the end of a fresh election process, the outgoing VC, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, was appointed.

The teacher is said to have pulled the student's hair at a last week, marking the fourth teacher arrested in the district since November, according to reports.

Police responded to a reported assault at the King/Robinson Inter-district Magnet School in New Haven around 3:45 p.m. Feb. 1.

During their investigation, officers said the student accused her teacher of pulling her by her hair, according to WTNH.

Jennifer Wells-Jackson, a 49-year-old veteran school teacher, was charged with risk of injury to a minor and second-degree breach of peace.

Video appears to show the teacher holding onto 12-year-old Destinique James’ hair behind her as several other students scream around her before she lets go.

At the end of the day, there’s no justification for putting your hands on someone’s child."

New Haven Public Schools officials said the district takes the safety of its students very seriously, and that the district is fully cooperating with the investigation.

Wells-Jackson was released on a $20,000 bond and is expected to appear in court this week.

Education / Lagos Govt. Orders Dowen College Remains Shut While Other Schools Opens by Seeksnigeria: 7:53pm On Jan 03, 2022
Update from SIGGY .ng

The Lagos state government has made a statement that Dowen College will remain close and will not resumed on Tuesday, January 4 as other schools will, until the investigation into the death case of Sylvester Oromoni is finally settled, Siggy reports.

This is as other private primary and secondary schools in Lagos prepare to resume for the commencement of the second term on Tuesday, January 4.

Recall that Oromoni died on November 30, 2021. His family alleged he was beaten by some of his seniors days before he died.

Following the public outrage generated by the incident, the Lagos state government on December 3, 2021, ordered the indefinite closure of the school.

In an interview, an assistant director in charge of the public affairs unit, Ministry of Education, Ganiu Lawal, said very soon, the school would join others to resume but “not until ongoing investigations into the unfortunate incident reach an advanced stage.”

According to Lawal, since the matter was not strictly a state matter and with the involvement of the police and other parties, “it would be ideal for all “t's” to be crossed and “I's” to be dotted.

“But I can assure you that very soon the issue will be resolved, but they are not resuming tomorrow” Lawal said

In a statement released on Monday, January 3, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo, said bullying, cultism, and other vices would not be tolerated in any part of the school. Admonishing school administrators to increase counselling of students against these vices, the commissioner welcomed students, teachers and school administrators to the beginning of a New Year and second term of 2021/2022 school session.

“Devise appropriate strategies to advance teacher, student interaction in order to gain an insight and expose negative tendencies before they metamorphose into unfortunate situations. Adequate monitoring, especially as it affects boarding school students should be enforced to prevent the incidence of bullying and all other vices,” the commissioner advised.

Education / UNIPORT 1st Class Female Graduate Inspires Many With Her Sad Story (Photo) by Seeksnigeria: 8:07pm On Dec 30, 2021
Update from SIGGY .ng

A Nigerian lady named Ngozi Andrew has taken to Linkedin to motivate people who might be considering giving up as she shared her sad story, Siggy reports.

Her travails began from secondary school In a lengthy post, Ngozi, a first-class graduate of the University of Port Harcourt revealed that she had actually dropped out of secondary school at SS1.

According to her, only her immediate family were privy to the information that she didn't complete her secondary school education

The linguistics and communications graduate added that her father's early demise made things worse for them.

This is as it left the responsibility of catering for 8 children solely on her mother and this made Ngozi put her education on hold.

"My father died early, leaving only my mum to take care of 8 of us.

"Out of these 8 children, 2 were seriously sick and had to go in and out of the emergency room at regular intervals.

"The burden was just too heavy for one woman so I had to put my education on hold and get a job."

Ngozi's aspiration of becoming an international lawyer was halted as she moved to Lagos from the village to become a housemaid and look after the 3 kids of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Ngozi said she kept her academic dream alive by reading everything she could lay her hands on in the lawyer's office.

From there, she would offer the same service to a bank manager but her time with the woman also ended in a similar fashion as that of the SAN- both failed to enrol her in school despite pleadings and dedicated service.

Against all odds, Ngozi got admitted into UNIPORT, thanks to the saving she made from doing several menial jobs. Ngozi however stated that she got into the university at almost years of age.

"Fast forward to 2010, after several menial jobs, I finally saved enough and registered for GCE myself and cleared my papers. In 2013 I did jamb and Post UME. My name was number 13 on Uniport's merit list that year.

"By the time I got into University, I was hugging 30 and I was in a class of fresh brained 19 and 20 year olds. But I was determined to put in my very best and I came out with a first Class.
