Hello Sir,

There are rules/guidelines for public and private schools in Nigeria. It is true that the Nigerian Law School is a public school for Nigerians whereas that of the Op is a private/business entity.

There is nothing like the school should "bend" to accomodate the Muslim students for fear of being sued.

Private schools are subject to the Ministry of Education rules, above all, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999 as amended).
In this order:
1. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
2. Private Education (Miscellaneous Provisions) Education Law (1989).
3. The National Policy on Education (2013).

Let us bear in mind that federal laws on dress code are supreme to private school regulations in Nigeria. Although the private schools have autonomy of their rules and regulations, it should also be done not to conflict/clash with fundamental constitutional rights, such as freedom of religion or expression, or violate established federal guidelines.

There is a Supreme Court ruling that Muslim female students in public schools have a right to wear the hijab. That is a precedent that apply to all schools including private schools.

Let us bear in mind that the hijab is a form of expression of one's religious beliefs.

The Guidelines for Public and Private Schools in Lagos State is also explicit.

Section 1.03
Paragraph (a) states that the purpose of secondary education is to provide students with opportunities for education of a higher quality irrespective of séx, social, religious or ethnic background or disability.

Ma'am, the Supreme Court hijab ruling applies specifically to the Nigerian Law School and by extension public institutions which are funded by government with tax payers money. The Nigerian Law School is one entity, and denial of peoples right to wear their hijab at the call to bar ceremony is in breach of the constitutional right of religious freedom and expression. It will also hinder people from partaking in the ceremony. I understand the SC judgement in that context.

Private schools on the other hand are not public property. They're voluntary institutions, and there are thousands of them in the country. Nobody is forced to attend them, and parents make a choice of private school knowing their rules and regulations.

For instance, my kids attend a conservative faith-based school. The school guidelines include;

◾Boys must barb only straight low cut. No flamboyant styles, no parting, no punk hair cut, dreadlocks or dada
◾Girls must not use coloured attachments, beads, or any adornment on their plaited hair.
◾Girls are permitted to wear only full-stop earrings.
◾No mufti. Only the schools ceremonial wear is permitted to be worn for school events, except on cultural and career days.
◾Only gospel music is played during school graduation, events and ceremonies.
◾The pupils and staff are anointed every beginning of term by a Pastor from the parent church.
◾Once in a while, the kids are expected to fast within a specified time period.
◾Cane and flogging is still used as a disciplinary measure.
Etc etc

I'm a moderate christian but I chose to abide by the school rules because I wanted my kids to attend the school due to its pedigree and excellent performance in Common Entrance examinations. My point is if the parents want their kids to attend the OP's school, they should abide by the school rules. Simple!.

Constitutionally, Nigeria is a secular country and Private schools operate under guidelines set by the Ministry of Education, but they also retain autonomy to set standards such as uniforms, discipline, or even religious orientation. That’s why there are Christian schools that make chapel attendance compulsory and Muslim schools that enforce Islamic dress codes and tenets.

Also, freedom of religion isn’t absolute. It can be limited in the interest of discipline, order, and the rights of others. An example is LASEPA sealing churches in residential neighbourhoods in Lagos on account of noise pollution.

The Lagos State guideline you refer to is about equal access to education. It means schools cannot deny admission to prospective students on the grounds of their religious faith, and NOT THAT private schools must abandon their dress codes or adjust their rules to match pupils religious preferences.

If every private school bend its standards for every demand, there'll be chaos and disorderliness. Schools need structure to function, and there are lots of option available to parents such as Christian, Muslim, Secular and Military schools. That freedom of choice is the balance, not forcing schools to abandon their identity

The OP's school does not allow the wearing of hijab, and he shouldn't compromise. If the hijab thing is so important to the parents, they should take their kids to schools that do. There are plenty of them in Nigeria.

I want us all to look into a request from a returning parent and come up with suggestions, advise, examples(picture samples) etc.
A family left our school some years back while their daughters were in nursery and lower pry classes.

They're planning to come back now while they are in the secondary sch Ss2 and SS 1 now
One going to SS2 didn't do well in our entrance test at all which we advised to repeat.
The SS1 performed excellently
So parents said they can't be in same classes. That they will get extra teachers you know their excuses.

The reasons why they left was that they took them to a Faith based sch so they could learn their religion, Islam, Long hijabs.
Now coming they want us to allow them wear hijabs in which I said NO cos ours isn't a Faith based sch as I won't even allow Christians SU cover their hair in sch.

I suggested that they buy them beret caps and wear after sch. So the parents went back home to think over it.

Do you think we should bend our rules to accommodate them buy allowing Beret, which the parents agreed to or we should maintain our standards knowing fully well that other parents would replicate.

Also I think IRS is now a compulsory subject in secondary schools new curriculum

My advice is simple: the school should maintain its rules and not bend them. Once you make an exception, you’ve opened the door for every other parent to bring their own requests, and soon the school loses its identity and standard.

The parents knew the rules before they left. They chose an Islamic school because of religion, and now they’re coming back because the quality and standard in your school is better. The secular nature of your school is one of the things that makes it tick, and acceptable to everyone.

If you allow hijabs, what will you say if another parent asks that their child be allowed to wear SU headscarves, or traditional beads, or some other religious symbol? The whole place will scatter.

Your suggestion of berets is even unnecessary.. The parents must accept that your school has its own standards, and align or take their kids elsewhere It’s better to lose one family than lose the uniformity and discipline of your entire school system.

Lastly, its true IRS/CRS is now compulsory, but that’s about academics, not dress code.

My advice: don’t compromise. Stick to your rules. Let them take their kids elsewhere if they insist on them wearing hijabs and will not adhere to your schools rules and regulations.

Such an interesting conversation. This reminds me of the Amasa Firdaus case in 2017.

The Nigerian Law School ordinarily allows female Muslim students to wear hijab to classes but not for Call to Bar ceremony until Amasa Firdaus in 2017 insisted that she would wear the hijab for her Call to Bar ceremony, this led to series of questions regarding freedom of religion and dress code in the legal profession.

Eventually, she was called to Bar in 2018. This set a precedence for female Muslim law graduates to wear hijab in their Call ceremony.

Just like sonnie10 said up there, follow the rules of the law. If the parents are well read, they might sue for infringement of fundamental human rights on freedom of expression, religion etc. You also need to research on schools' policies and accepted dress code/ethics governing that state.

The Nigerian Law School is a public institution for all Nigerians. The OP's school is a private entity with their own rules and regulations.

Bokku rice is not expensive. I once compared their price with that of open market and theirs was cheaper.

Yes I forgot to mention it on my post that Bokku's price has dropped albeit not as much that of Ur state of residence. About 7k to 8k price differential for 25kg and 50kg here in Lagos.

P.S : The price is from Bokku which is arguably the cheapest u can get compared to open market price/price from other stores.

Well, I don't expect the packaged rice sold in the stores and open market to be the same price as that sold in my state cos we buy directly from the rice mill.

But even at that Bokku rice dey expensive and is definitely not the best deal out there.

On TikTok, many dealers are selling 50kg for less than 69k. Some dealers dey even lament onto say dem stock up when the price dey high, now the price don fall.

Anyways, Bokku current price doesn't invalidate my point cos it's a drop from the 78k a few months back.

It is simple nah . You applied for 100,000 to pay back 105,000 at 5% interest per annum. You were credited 95,000 with the 5% loan interest (5,000) deducted upfront, you are now required to pay 100,000.

Before upfront interest deduction:
100,000 (loan applied for) + 5,000 (5% loan interest) = 105,000 (loan repayment).

You were suppose to pay 105,000 but they have already deducted the interest upfront, so you now paying back 100,000.

Interest rate remain 5%..

If they had given you N100,000, you'll pay N105,000. They gave you 95k, deducted an initial N5,000 and you'll pay back 100k which brings the total sum to N105,000.

Well, I don't know much about the terms and conditions of cooperative loans. I know about company's loans to staff and I know those loans don't carry any hidden charges. What you apply for is what you get and what you will return in due time is loan + principal.

Maybe u should engage Ur cooperative members further on the terms of the loan.

To the best of my knowledge, most loans banks give out are always insured. Most loans have default risk which the customers are compelled to get insurance on it. Because this small loans of 100k, 200k, 500k, etc are small in nature and asking customers to go apply for insurance on it may turn the customers off; what banks do is build the insurance cost into the terms and conditions ( those long gibberish you skip on the loan app and click " I agree"

Now having agreed to the terms and conditions, they will automatically debit you for the insurance cost then send you the remaining funds. If it were to be a corporate loanwith physical relationship managers and you dropped a collateral security like C of O of Ur building , these things will be explained to you.

There is no risk of non-repayment because the loan will be deducted from source, along with other statutory deductions and the loanee will only receive the balance as salary.

Pls just speak to the maths. I only want to know if the structure of the loan does not amount to an interest of 10%, instead of 5%.

A person applies for N100,000 loan at 5% annual interest. The 5% interest of N5,000 is deducted upfront, and N95,000 is credited to the person's account. The loanee is to pay back N100,000 instead of N95,000 with monthly repayment of N10,000 for 10 months.

Doesn't paying back N100,000 instead of N95,000 amount to an interest rate of 10% since the interest was deducted upfront and only 95,000 was disbursed?

The graduation thing is so ridiculous that pupils in Pre-Nursery were also graduating. So if you child starts school at 1year+ from the Pre-Nursery Class, dem go do two graduations; the first in Pre-Nursery and the second in Nursery 3 (or Kindergarten).

And as a parents, you no fit escape paying the graduation levy cos most schools build it into their 3rd term school fees. In my kids school, the graduation levy was 50k last session and it was built into the 3rd term school fees of Pre-Nursery, Nursery 3, and Primary 5 classes.

The graduation thing was also an avenue for affluent parents to show off, and pepper those wey no hold bar, and it's one of the reasons I like my kids school. No showoff on that day cos every child wears the school official ceremonial wear top with blue jean (skirt or pant) for the graduation ceremony, and they strictly enforce it.

The textbook thing was another 👎. Apart from their non-reusability, many of the books are sold in pairs, Quantitative and Verbal, Maths & English, Writing and Colouring etc.

When my son was in Nursery 2, he lost his bag in a Keke Napep. Handwriting assignment was given to him that day so the textbook was in the bag. When we couldn't trace the Keke, I went back to the school to buy the textbook, and I was told the Handwriting textbook is sold together with the Colouring textbook, and not alone. At the end, I no get choice but to cough out 7k to buy the two books.

I invigilated a 200L exam yesterday. The venue I managed was specifically for 400L carryover students of a particular department. Out of the 22 students that wrote the exam, 19 were males while 3 were females.

I asked their course rep if they had more boys than girls, and he said their class has 65 students, comprising of 31 girls and 34 boys.

So,
Out of 31 girls, 28 passed and 3 failed.
Out of 34 boys, 15 passed and 19 failed.

The review which only affect Passport Application fees made in Nigeria, now set a new fee thresholds for 32-page with 5-year validity at N100,000 and 64-page with 10-year validity at N200,000.

3. Meanwhile, Nigerian Passport Application fees made by Nigerians in diaspora remain unchanged at $150 for 32-page with 5-year validity and $230 for 64-page with 10-year validity.

The increase only applies to local applications, and I find that strange cos the exchange rate has been stable for a while.

The fact that the application fee is higher than the national minimum wage says a lot about how poor salaries and incomes are in the country.

I live in the capital city of the rice producing state in the South East. Importation/Bringing in of foreign rice into the state even for personal consumption is banned so we consume local rice which we buy from the rice mill.

Even the supermarket stores here only sell the local rice procured from the mill.

No p, but from experience the markup difference between the mill price, and the supermarket stores in my location (Everyday, Roban) is usually around 10k or a little over.

For added context, about 3 months ago, I got a bushel at the same rice mill for 25k so the price is definitely crashing.

Price of rice is steadily crashing. I was at the rice mill yesterday, and prices ranged from 17k to 22k for a bushel (25kg) depending on the species, grain type, and whether its old or new rice. The one I got cost 18k for the bushel. For context, this time last year, I got a bushel for 38k, and 3 months ago I bought at 25k.

Judging from the price at the mill, 50kg bag of rice at supermarket stores no suppose pass 50k.

Buhari border closure and banning of rice importation drove up the price of rice. and now that PBAT has reversed it, the price don dey come down, and long may it continue.

There's also one leaf called "ewe asunwon" in Yoruba which mothers always use to scrub the scalp to treat ringworm. The juice from the leaf is medicinal and fights ringworm as effective as dem izal and spirit.

You will see mothers place the head of the child under their armpit and scrub the affected part with the leaf while the child go dey wriggle . I witnessed this one around 2010/2011 when I was staying in outside campus in school and one of our neighbor's son had that ringworm. In a matter of weeks the thing disappear from the boy's head completely.

Ringworm doesn't cure easily. Even after using the orthodox drugs (antifungal tablets/syrup and ointments, eg,, Griseofulvin) you gats use the leaf to scrape the site of the infection for it to clear completely.
