I was almost surprised by the reactions on this thread but then I remembered - lazy Nigerian youth that don't bother to read full articles or watch videos in order to get nuance or context and only rush to react after reading an intentionally incendiary headline.

Nothing surprising here.

What's the problem with identifying as a wife?

Nothing at all, except your husband doesn't identify as a husband. Abi, are you alone in the marriage?

Chimamanda is a wife too, in case you guys are wondering. It is not an accomplishment.

I don't understand those that have issues with people that makeup. Everyone deserves to look beautiful whichever way they choose. Your idea of beauty may not match someone else's but that's why it's their life not yours. Do with your face what you want let them do with their face what they want. C'est finit.

JudgementHammer:

Since you can think, you should have also thought of why you have to wear clothes to cover ur nakkeedness unlike animals, why u have d highest developed brain among animals and why you can't pick foods from the floor or have sex on the streets without being shy. The same proof that equates you with animals as long as labour pain is concerned, should competently equate you with them in those areas too. Your thinking is half-done just like an animal's thinking shd be.

Do you know that animals struggles to get food existed with them before God created man on d 6th day. When God created Lions and other animals in d world, they immediately begin their struggle to fight for prey and the preys with immediate sense to elude their predators. They were also created with their physiological responses to childbirth.

Man alone was d one created out of special consideration..God said now let's create man In our image and likeness, why were animals not so lucky? After creating them in his likeness, be also put them in a special garden called eden guarded by angels. They were so special, they were d only one that could talk and with the highest developed brain. In the same special way, he made them without labour pain until they brought themselves under the curse by eating the forbidden fruit as recorded in the bible and also had to be clothed unlike animals.

Clothes are not just for covering unclothedness, y'know. They keep you warm when the weather is cold and keep you cool when the weather is hot. They basically protect your skin from the elements.

People do pick food from the floor if they are hungry enough. That you don't do it doesn't mean there aren't people that do.

Also, not being naked is a societal impropriety, not a natural one. I mean, before the British came with their fashion, weren't most tribes in Nigeria basically walking around naked or half naked? Were they ashamed?

TBH, I'm not surprised at ho Nigerians are reacting to this. Very typical.

Honestly, I don't care what her motivations are for posting that. I don't care who she blames for it. What I do care about is the fact that various acts of sexual abuse and exploitation go on in our places of worship virtually on a daily basis and instead of we, the congregation to be concerned and investigate these issues, we are too busy protecting and defending our pastors, priests, religious leaders and religious institutions to empathize with those who have been victims of such trauma and ensure that such is not tolerated amongst us. It is baffling how Nigerians would automatically take the sides of religious leaders and institutions in such cases (except when such leaders are from rival denominations/religions) over those who have gone through traumatic experiences. Just look at this thread and the names people who have sisters and daughters have called the lady for speaking out about what she experienced. Someone, somewhere may be reading this and may end up being a victim and recalling the reaction of the people on this thread, would just keep it a painful secret. Top on the list of people Nigerians do not hold accountable are religious leaders/institutions and political leaders and institutions - yet in civilized society these are the people who are under the most scrutiny to ensure they are doing the right thing and setting the right example. Any surprise Nigeria is like this?

Nigerians, I shake head for una o. I shake head.

On the one hand, I agree that Buhari wasn't the best choice for them to have backed in 2015.

On the other hand, neither was Jonathan. If Jonathan runs again today, I still wouldn't vote for him. At that point, only those two (Jonathan and Buhari) had any realistic chance of winning the election. Those guys simply went with who was, at the time, the lesser evil. Unfortunately, as it turns out, the lesser evil is just as bad as the other evil.

2019 is around the corner and yet, more credible politicians aren't positioning themselves to have a good shot at winning the presidential elections. Instead, it's the same old recycled faces and names that are making the best moves. It's just unfortunate that Nigeria hasn't gotten to the level where an outsider can run and win like what happened in France. In 2019 again, it's looking like Nigerians will end up voting what seems like the lesser of two evils instead of the best option. Sad.

Because it pains me when I consider how much time we spend on infighting and blame passing that we could spend on building our nation. Developed nations weren't built by the citizens siting around the point fingers at each other. They were built by the people holding their governments accountable and creating a culture of working for the good of their immediate communities and their country at large. Nigeria can and should be so much greater than it is now but because we have spent too much time in docility and blame games, we're regressing instead of progressing. That has to change.

No No No, Only Two Region Has Ruled This Country The Most And Majority Of Those Ruler Has Been For The Hausa/fulani Stock And The Yoruba's. So Any Other Tribe That Blame's Them Is Fully Within Their Right. If Some Of Those Region Werent Power Hungry The Last Of The 6 Geopolitical Zone Would Have Been Rounding Up It 8years Tenure In The Next 5years.

This Country Lacks Equity It Lack Rule Of Law, It Lacks Fairness And Oneness, The South East Should Have Been The Last Region To Rule As They Broke The System With The First Coup, Bt One Region Held The Country With Coup And Counter Coup For More Than 37years And They Are Still In Power.

Tell Me Where U Want Me To Derive Joy From In This Country. If Only Changing Nationality Was That Easy Alot Of Us Would Have Jumped Ship. Break Up Is The Best Solution As Nigeria Will Never Get Better With The Way We Are Going U Cant Fight The Government In A Multi Ethnic Country Like Nigeria.

It's easy to blame the Hausa/Fulani for Nigeria's woes because a good number of our leaders since independence have been of Northern extraction. However, you would have to ask yourselves - how have the Hausas and Fulanis benefited from their people being in power? The Fulanis are still mostly nomadic cattle rearers while in nearly every state in Nigeria, you find the Hausas at the lower rungs of society, doing menial jobs like being water carriers, gate men or Okada/Keke riders. The North is far from a paradise and it should be patently obvious from the fact that Northerners routinely flock down to the South to earn a living. Isn't it obvious that it's not a Hausa/Fulani thing but that those in leadership position are entirely unfit to be there.

Let's even look at the regional leaders in the South - how are they performing? On average, just as badly as their Northern counterparts. So even if we were two separate countries, with this same mentality and approach to leadership, we would be exactly where we are right now, probably looking for someone else to blame among ourselves.

The problem is that we have had a succession of bad leaders over the years. It wouldn't matter matter if all our leaders were from one tribe if they gave us good governance. Those politicians who you see clamoring the most for one region or the other to take a shot at leadership are those who stand the most to benefit from it, not because they truly believe a leader from that region would perform better. In spite of the fact that there are 50 states in the USA and the USA is older than Nigeria, some states have never produced a president. Ever. Yet the US is a developed country. Doesn't that tell you it's not about where you are from but what you bring to the table?

Well, today is the last day of the year 2017 and, I must say, this year has been one heck of a ride. It's not been utterly horrible, of course (in my opinion, it was actually better than 2016) but it hasn't been glorious either. One thing has remained constant though: the performance of government has been underwhelming and Nigerians are polarized as usual. Now, I'm not going to assume a whole lot of people will take this advice (I mean , we Nigerians are the most difficult people when it comes to letting go of sentiments) but i'll still say it regardless. Please, don't go into 2018 carrying the old burdens of ethnicism and sectarianism you carried throughout 2017. In fact, now might be a good time to drop it so that we can go into 2018 united in the mindset that we want to make our country a better place.

The fact some of us don't realise is that politicians have been using our pointless infighting as the perfect cover to enrich themselves and get away with it for decades now. If one person points out that someone is corrupt, trust that the person would call it a political witch-hunt on his entire tribe - even though he is completely guilty of the crime. And we, having been blinded by our ethnic and sectarian sentiments would arise to defend the most heinous of criminal; we would defend the very people who are keeping us in underdevelopment, pocketing what should be the commonwealth of the people and leaving Nigerians to suffer - just because the person's name sounds like our own.

Look, in 2018, we shouldn't think PDP or APC (this is easy because neither party has an ideology). We shouldn't think Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa. We shouldn't think Atiku or Buhari. All we should think is Nigeria. Whatever is not good for Nigeria, let us get rid of it and whatever is good for Nigeria, let us keep. Don't think because a certain politician is from your tribe, he necessarily cares about you or your people. The list of politicians who have been in power for longer than I have been alive but have done absolutely nothing meaningful for their own people is endless. So clearly, tribe is not a good yardstick for giving support.

Let us come together to demand good and quality leadership from our leaders. Let us put all these blame games behind us. We've been blaming left, right and center since 1960, yet Nigeria keeps getting worse. Isn't it obvious that our blaming i doing nothing? Instead let us focus on banding together to demand that our government works for us, regardless of which party is in power, regardless of which tribe our leaders are from.

Equally importantly, let us put aside this childish infighting - insulting each other on tribal lines. It is silly, it is childish and it has done nobody any good. We are all suffering the effects of bad governance that leaders from all the tribes across Nigeria have participated in inflicting on the people over the years. Tribe makes nobody a saint or a villain - it's just one more way of identifying yourself but it doesn't make you a good or bad person. If someone does something bad, condemn it because it is bad - don't call tribe into it.

2018 is a pre-election year so expect that politicians would start making concerted efforts to get people to support them, including lying through their teeth. Don't be carried away by empty promises or tribal/sectarian sentiment. Don't sell your vote/support for a small bag of rice or N1000. Think of the future generations. Do you want them to grow up in a society you damaged by selling your vote or supporting the wrong person for tribal or religious purposes? Let's make Nigeria work. It is not impossible. It is only through the power of we, the people, that this country would work. Our elected officials may wield power but the real power lies with and in us and in 2018, I want every one of us to realize that we are the power behind the throne so let us stop acting like slaves in our own country.

But, again, of course, I don't expect everyone to take this advice. I just believe that mature, balanced, well-adjusted people would.

It's my 2 cents for Nigeria's political and social 2018.

Blame the government for not doing it's best to help Nigerians.many people attend church prograein different parts of the world yet the economy still stand strong because their government are working. Whether we don't attend or attend night vilgils, Nigeria problem will still remain where it is because many of us have bad mindset in doing things that are right. The youths are the leaders of tomorrow yet same youths can not stand to vote for their own like what happened in Kenya. Imagine many youths refusing to vote for the likes of Yul Edochie yet we want change. If many youths get to the top, they would do worst than our politicians because of bad seed

Sorry, but you're wrong. Before we blame the government for not doing its best to help Nigerians, we have to first

1) Blame Nigerians for not holding government accountable amd
2) Blame Nigerians for not helping the government

You think other countries where things work are that way because the people in government are God-fearing saints with no intent to enrich themselves? No! They just know that whatever they do, the people are watching and the people will hold them accountable for everything they do so, in their best interests, they have to sit up and work in the interest of the people. Those that want to enrich themselves as much as possible just stay out of government altogether because, again, the people are watching. But in Nigeria, we murmur day and night but we hold nobody accountable. Any surprise our leaders take us for granted?

Worse still, even when our leaders try a little to do good for us, we also destroy their good works, then turn around to blame them for it. There was a place in Yaba, Lagos, where people dumped refuse in public and it was an eyesore. One day, government officials came with a dump truck, cleared the place of refuse and put up signs asking people not to dump refuse there. Right the very next day, people had already continued heaping refuse in the same spot. Government would create canals for drainage and people would block it to build shops or houses then complain when there is a flood. Government would provide sidewalks yet people would convert it to their shop space. Nigerians don't pay taxes or support the government in any way yet they keep lamenting that government is doing nothing to help them.

HELP THE GOVERNMENT TO HELP YOU!

I kinda agree though....it's weird that the practitioners of black magic and users of charms in Nigeria never seem to have a camera to verify their claims. We hear all the time that these things happen in a village somewhere (rarely ever the city because, apparently, the spirits don't take public transport) but we've never seem them happen in a video, especially in this age when nearly everyone has a phone that can record videos.

If the government legalizes armed robbery and rape, then it is legal and you'll have to deal with it. You're acting like you like everything that is legal now. Didn't take long for Nigerians to take this as an assault on their religion.

Lemme break it down:

Daddy Freeze is saying you shouldn't kill yourself all in the name of celebrating Christmas. He is buttressing his point with the fact that December 25th is not even the date of Christ's birth so all these "I must kill goat", "I must kill fowl", "I must go to village and show off" are unnecessary. Celebrate within your means.

The US, Israel, Palestine and the UN can sort this out by themselves.

I mean, just take a look - almost 15 pages and counting over a matter in which our input will make absolutely no difference. Leave the elephants to fight, instead of struggling to be the grass on which they fight.

Some people here that have basically written scripture in support of or against the US' recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital have not written up to two lines about the problems bedeveling Nigeria.

Except you are a US or Israeli citizen or Palestinian, this is really not your business so...

FACE YOUR FRONT!
