I myself when I went to Birmigham in 2016, I saw a bill board of her in one advert, maybe they were advertizing a book. She is not small oo, she is well known and respected world wide.

Wait.

OP is saying "don't move to the US illegally"

Some of you guys are accusing him/her of "blocking road" against others. Are you guys okay at all?

I've not left Nigeria for an extended period but I certainly know that living illegally anywhere is not advisable. It's basically just leaving one set of problems for another: a pointless venture, if you ask me.

I get that the country is hard and looks hopeless but don't trade one set of problems for a different, more complicated problem with further-reaching consequences.

So...because you regularly have sex with someone, it suddenly becomes impossible for the person to rape you.

Rape is about consent. Even if we've had sex over 1000 times, if at the 1001st time, I refuse to give consent and you force yourself on me, then it is rape.

If the judge made that judgment based just on the fact that the accused and accuser were friends with benefits, then it is a very kangaroo judgment

Phones / Re: How Apple Iphones Might End Up Like Blackberry If They Don't Change by senbonzakurakageyoshi(m): 6:43pm On Jan 19, 2019
IPhones are for class? Interesting, but you know what?

SO WHERE BLACKBERRY DEVICES!

Any Economics student understands the principles of diminishing returns which basically says that the longer a product remaims the same, the less profitable it is and eventually, not only would it be no longer profitable, it would start incurring losses.

It's high time the guys at Apple realize that they can't push out one design and it would sustain them for 10 years. Even 5 years is a long time to for a design to persist. With the current luxury of choice, users are becoming more and more impatient when it comes to getting something new or revolutionary. The sooner Apple acts on this reality, the better for the brand and the company.

Politics / Re: There'll Be No Difference Btw Buhari And Atiku, Think Outside The Slavery Box by senbonzakurakageyoshi(m): 10:37pm On Jan 18, 2019
Sad but i agree

President Buhari has been far from successful in his current tenure and what's worse is his inability to communicate with the people he's leading and to inspire confidence which is the mark of a good leader.

On the other hand, Atiku spent eight years as Vice President of this country. He's part of the people that have brought Nigeria to where it is now and worse still, he has as bedfellows the likes of Saraki, FFK, Fayose and the rest for whom the notion of loyalty, commitment and service is a foreign concept.

My problem is not even that the candidates outside the two major parties do not have the resources and reach to wrest power. It's that the people are still willy-nilly supporting those that have impoverished them in the name of tribal or religious sentiment. The problem with Nigeria is not corrupt leaders. The problem is the people supporting corrupt leaders.

Sometimes i just consider the Nigerian situation and feel weak because, honestly, there are ways out but i don't think we will take any of them.

Who writes this nonsense, Iphones are the best phones around now no comparison, Samsung used to give a chase but now, no spark, no innovation, just copy copy.

Iphones are premium phones and they should stay premium, if you want a slashed price phone go and buy Infinix and the likes. if you cant afford an apple that it your business.

Using some cooked up market indices from China to dictate demand and supply, truth it the American and european market is enough for Apple to thrive, besides the iphone still remains and maintains a strong market share in china and it will stay that way for the forseeable future

Dont come and be disturbing us here with price slash on iphones. Go and patronize infinix

Cooked up? Even Apple admit that sales are down and are already dropping prices in certain markets (the XR and XS hover at just under $1000 in certain Asian markets to boost sales while tey remain over a thousand dollars in the rest of the world).

Emary:
In Nigeria, Euthanasia is far more likely to abused than used for mercy killing if licensed. We are simply not there yet. Spouses will simply find excuses to kill each other off, children will pay medical personnel to murder their parents for inheritance and any parent who doesn't want to bear the responsibilities of rearing children with even the slightest malformations or diseases will opt to end their lives.

There is also the religious angle. We may not be very law-abiding but all the major religions we believe in do not permit us to take a life. Who determines the criteria for who gets to live or die anyway? Everyone contributes something to society, even if it's just a lesson. Killing off people for deformities merely increased the likelihood of having psychopaths instead. That is not an option I would appreciate.

Could you explain what you mean by this? Because I'm pretty sure euthanasia is something that only trained medical professionals are allowed to do with necessary documentation from the state, patient and patient's family. Anything outside that is straight up murder.

Belief is not everything. Being a good artiste does not translate to being a good record label owner any more than being a good footballer translates to being a good coach. If Reekado Banks is not a good manager and doesn't hire one, it's almost definitely bound to end in failure.

Except she had fallen out with the president, it would have been nothing for the presidency to get the NYSC to create an authentic exemption certificate for her and an elaborate cover-up to go with it. After-all, the NYSC does not have autonomy from the FG.

Maybe this federal government is just incompetent and not completely corrupt.

While Kotlin is a relatively recent language when compared with other more established languages like Java and C++, it is quickly gaining traction. This is helped in no small part by the fact that Google announced that Kotlin is now officially a language for developing Android apps (and we know what percentage of the mobile app market Android holds!) and also the fact that Kotlin is basically Java on steroids without much of the boilerplate. Cool, huh!

So that out of the way, I'm creating a WhatsApp group for Kotlin users, Kotlin devs and Kotlin enthusiasts in Nigeria where we can interact, share ideas, teach, learn, help each other solve problems, share events and generally make ourselves better Kotlin programmers.

If you would like to be a member of the group, do drop your number below and I'll you up ASAP.

Literature / Church Observer by senbonzakurakageyoshi(m): 6:08pm On Jul 14, 2018
I yawned loudly and glanced around, attracting judgmental glares from a few pious faces. To say I was bored would have been stating the obvious. The preacher kept talking in his flat monotone and I couldn't help noticing that around the church auditorium, some heads were nodding - but not in agreement with what the preacher was saying. Some were leaning against the pew in front of them, huge Bible open as if they were intently reading scripture but they had gone far into sleep land. At least one one man threw caution to the wind, leaned back in his seat and snored softly while the slightest hint of drool peeked from the corners of his lips.

Even the evangelists in their exalted seats in front of the church weren't faring better. One particular evangelist leaned precariously at the edge of his seat and I was worried that at any moment, he would drop to the ground - not that I would complain because that would be hilarious.

However, some eyes were wide open. The usual suspects - Mrs. Eze and Mrs. Adebola, the fashion divas of the church were casting their gazes across the length and breadth of the auditorium to see if anybody had noticed their resplendent outfits. They always acted like they were friends - yet it seemed every Sunday, they dressed to upstage each other. Today, Mrs Eze's gold necklace looked so heavy I was wondering if air could pass through her windpipe. Mrs. Adebola, on the other hand, wore a gele that was so broad, it should serve as a satellite dish receiving signals from twelve different countries. I could see the man behind her craning his neck in an effort to get a view of the pastor and, just when he found a good view, she would move her head and render the preacher invisible again. He looked like the only thing stopping him from hurling insults was the fact that he was in the house of God. I sniggered.

Pastor Segun glanced at his watch and I could see him choke down a yawn. He cast his eyes around the auditorium - kind of like I was doing. Was he bored too? He clearly looked it. He also looked like he was regretting inviting the preacher to speak this particular Sunday - or any Sunday for that matter and was making a mental note never to invite him again. Besides, the preacher had been allocated one hour to speak; he had crossed an hour thirty minutes and was heading towards two hours with no sign of rounding up any time soon. He signaled to the assistant pastor and whispered something to him. I'm pretty sure he said "never invite this man to preach here again" but I could be wrong.

It seemed like after the better part of two hours, the preacher suddenly realized that he was boring the congregation. Either that or he heard the pastor's ban. Suddenly he kicked the things up a notch and started speaking fiercely in accusatory tones that could have risen the dead.

"..........it is a shame, I tell you. You people cannot listen to the word for two hours. Two hours! When I am at home, I listen to back-to-back messages from different pastors for seven hours straight....."

Pastor Segun couldn't stop his eye-roll and probably muttered something about our church not being where Guinness records for longest preaching are broken.

"...that is why I am filled with the spirit! Most of you come here just to show off your expensive watches..." He glanced meaningfully at pastor Segun's wrist. Pastor Segun raised an eyebrow. "....expensive necklaces...." Mrs. Eze clutched her gold necklace. "....tie gele like you are expecting a message from outer space...." Mrs. Adebola looked scandalized..."....and sleep like you don't have beds at home! When the man of God is talking! God's angels are watching, and taking notes o. At the end of today, they will report back to God. What do you want the report on you to say?"

A hubbub rose and died under two seconds.

"I've given the message I was sent to deliver. I hope it will not stand against you on the day of judgment."

Silence.

The preacher stepped off the pulpit, visibly annoyed and took his seat. The assistant pastor quickly got up and took his place on the pulpit.

"May the Lord bless his words in our heart. Amen. It's testimony time. If you have a testimony to share, if God has done...."

A shout cut him off from somewhere at the back of the church.

"Praaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaise the Lord!"

The church turned as one to look for where the shout came from and collectively groaned when they found out who it was. Madam Hope, giver of testimonies, testifier extraordinaire and the one person whose testimonies lasted long enough to qualify as a sermon. She also used her testimonies as an avenue to criticize those in the church she currently had issues with - which was almost always the pastor's wife - using comments that were so thinly veiled that if she had just said the person's name, it would have been less obvious. Most times, by the end of her testimonies, three quarters of the church wouldn't still be sure exactly what she was testifying about. I could see more than a few people pick up their Bibles and get up from their seats. The assistant pastor spotted her and looked alarmed.

"It appears we have no testimonies for today." He said, quickly. "Let us rise as we share the grace together."

Madam hope's scandalized expression was enough to erase the boredom of the past two hours.

Today was good.

Travel / Otedola Tanker Explosion:another Disaster For Us To Sweep Under The Carpet by senbonzakurakageyoshi(m): 9:33pm On Jun 28, 2018
Earlier today, I was in traffic at Apapa and the bus I was on was right beside an articulated truck carrying a container. First thing that came to my mind was the tragedy that occurred just last week when a container fell of Ojuelegba bridge onto a buss carrying passengers and a private car, killing at least three people. Of course, I was scared because, on examining the container, I realized the container wasn't secured to the truck in any way, the patch of road was pretty bad - which meant the container kept bouncing around on the truck. I recalled walking past Ojuelegba the following day and seeing the crushed bus, moved to the sidewalk with people walking past it like human beings weren't killed in it the previous day and I wondered at how quickly we had moved on from it like nothing had happened, no lessons learnt. And just then, a friend on a WhatsApp group sent messages of how she just witnessed an inferno on Otedola bridge and sent pictures.

Now, I don't want to go into what must have caused this - it could be a variety of factors. I also don't want to go into how we Nigerians don't seem to have any regard for basic safety procedures because that's a topic for another day. What I do want to comment on is how we'll all move on from this and forget about it in a week without learning any lessons, how our government would not enforce any safety regulations to ensure that events like these do not re-occur.

The fact is that, sure, some disasters are inevitable. However, a lot of the disasters that happen in Nigeria are very avoidable. It's a shame though that they occur and because our governments do nothing to prevent a re-occurrence, they happen again. It's very unlikely that the Jos killings would be the last of what we'll see on such things. We have no assurance that the container that fell off Ojuelegba bridge would be the last. And I cannot say with any certainty that we won't see something of the nature of the Otedola bridge incident in the future.

Here's the thing - I like the fact that Governor Ambode has taken the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) seriously - it's great - but it's a reactive measure in the grand scheme of things. The best way to manage a disaster is to prevent it from happening in the first instance. There needs to be greater will channeled towards ensuring that basic safety rules are adhered to by all citizens. I'm not referring just to Lagos state here; this is for every village, local government, state and the entire country. We cannot keep taking silly risks with people's lives like this and doing nothing to ensure that lives are not lost needlessly. If the Nigerian government is lax about dealing with safety and security, then it is time to hold our governments responsible for their failure to enforce rules because let's not think there are no rules are laws to prevent some of these occurrences. It's just government being unwilling to enforce them because clearly, our government officials are not being affected by these disasters. We, the people, are the ones dying everyday in avoidable tragedies. We, the people, need to start holding our governments responsible for their failures. I will still address our laxity when it comes to safety but right now, those at the top need to know that this cannot continue. If we shrug and say, "na God dey save person" and then do nothing, then it's only a matter of time before our social media feeds are flooded with pictures of another disaster.

Only a matter of time.

The Doors: Danfo doors are made for the strong. Most times, if you find yourself beside a door and you have to open it for other passengers to embark or disembark, you’ll find yourself doing a combination of the world’s strongest man contest and nuclear physics – because opening the doors are never straightforward. You’ll usually have to push something while pulling something else then kicking some other thing to get the doors to open. Trust me, it’s easier to get good network service on Glo than to open a Danfo’s door. Let’s not even talk about when the door suddenly falls off when the Danfo is on top speed, leaving drivers behind swerving to dodge the careening door like a live action Mario Kart game.

Air Conditioner: grin grin grin grin Hahahahahaha. Moving on…

Radio: Now this is the one thing you’re very likely to find working in most Danfos. Danfo drivers seemingly can’t do without their Davidos, Wizkids, Fujis, Highlifes and cringe-inducing Igbo gospel music and so they make sure the radio is in top shape at all times. Of course, there’ a very strong chance that the radios or music players you see in any Danfo are not the ones that were installed by the manufacturers. Either way, the engine might not work, the Danfo might be hotter than Nebuchadnezzar’s furnace and there’s the very real chance that another car might slam into the Danfo you’re in at any time but one thing you can be certain of is that you’ll be entertained.

So that's my list. Feel free to add yours!

Everything on the dashboard: For those who don’t know, the only way most Danfo drivers know they are over-speeding is from how fast the things around them are moving past – I know, what are speedometers there for. Alas, the average Danfo’s speedometer has not worked since like 1992. Fuel gauge? They only know the bus is low on fuel when it suddenly stops on the express. Engine heat level? What’s that? Oil gauge? Also when the bus stops moving between two distant bus stops – even worse if it’s going interstate. Dashboard back-light? What’s the point of it if none of the gauges is working? I personally did a small study on how many Danfos have the gauges on their dashboards functional and I’m yet to find one. Actually, one thing does work – the small digital clock….which is almost never right.

Mirrors: A friend and I were once driving behind a Danfo which was moving pretty slowly so my friend decided to overtake the bus as we were running rather late. However, just as our car was about to inching to the side of the bus, it suddenly swerved in our direction, nearly forcing us off the road. After the usual “blood of Jesus”‘ and insulting the driver, I asked aloud, “Didn’t he look at the….” I broke off. There were no mirrors anywhere on or in the Danfo – not the wing mirrors (or side mirrors as we know them here) or the rear-view mirror. The funny part is that even when Danfos have them, the drivers rarely ever use them, relying instead on the conductor to shout “watch your side oh”. One heck of a system, I tell you.

Interior Light: Are you joking? There’s a better chance of Peru winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup than finding a Danfo with functional interior lights. Don’t get me wrong, there is an interior light in a good number of those buses – just not the one that was installed when the bus was manufactured….and usually not even in the position where it’s supposed to be. Except a bulb connected to two naked wires (and leaving at least one passenger in mortal terror of getting an electric shock) counts as interior lights, then no, most of the interior lights in Danfos don’t work.

Headlamps/Headlights: Considering most Danfos work till pretty late, the expectation would be that the headlamps would be functional. Hah, you wish! Sometimes, you would be lucky and both would be functional. Other times only one out of the two would work. Worse still are when both lights are not working and the conductor has to use a flashlight to alert other vehicles and pedestrians that the Danfo is approaching. Or when the lights are so dim, it would be much more functional to light a candle in front of the bus. Even more interesting is that these vehicles never get impounded somehow. I wonder why…

Turn Signals/Blinkers (Known as Trafficators to Nigerians): So you’re driving behind this Danfo and you intend to go straight ahead, thinking the Danfo is heading in the same direction. Suddenly, the Danfo veers left or right and you have to slam on the brakes to avoid smashing into the side of a vehicle whose driver would only beg you to forgive him and tell you about his two wives and thirteen children. Congratulations, you have just encountered the Danfo without a turn signal! It’s funny how common this is, to the point that most Lagosians now drive some distance behind Danfos just in case their turn signals aren’t functional, y’know to avoid stories that touch. Again, still a wonder how the combined forces of the traffic police, LASTMA and FRSC miss them but hey, it’s Nigeria.

Brake Lights: Almost the same story as the turn signals – drive some distance behind for your personal safety. A lot of Danfos don’t have functional brake lights so you wouldn’t even know when they are slowing down except you’ve been driving in Lagos for a while and you’ve learnt to be perceptive about these things. You see a Danfo with functional brake lights, salute that driver for having something most of his mates don’t.

You know how when you are about to buy a second-hand product – like a phone or a TV – you ask the seller what’s wrong with it (because the assumption in Nigeria is that nobody ever wants to sell something that still works fine, not even, I don’t know, if the person just wants to raise money to buy something better). Well, when it comes to those yellow and black buses that ply Lagos state roads, popularly known as Danfos, the opposite question is what you should ask – what actually works? The average Danfo has fewer things working than the Kardashians have Ph.Ds. So let’s see, on the average Danfo, what actually works?

The Engine: You would assume that, at least for a vehicle transporting people from one point to another, the engine should at the very least work – and you would be right, at least till you’re stuck on third mainland bridge with the conductor trying to flag down passing vehicles. The average Danfo’s engine is louder than Terry G on coke and steroids so much so that even if you are using earphones on the loudest volume, you might not be able to hear yourself think. Even when the Danfo’s engine works, it seems like 75% of it’s ability to work is dependent on the driver’s willpower and not because the darn thing really is still very functional. And to make matters worse, the smoke – oh, the smoke. Drive behind some Danfos and you’ll be convinced you’ve crossed hell’s border. You know what next you shouldn’t trust after constant power supply in Lagos? A danfo’s engine.

I wrote this quite a while ago and it has just been sitting on my laptop all this while cheesy. Decided to post since, well, I don't think I have anything else to add to it. Enjoy!

A sudden sound jolted me and for a split second, my heart raced. I realized that it was my phone ringing and my heartbeat normalised. The phone was right beside me, vibrating....calling my attention that was present but distant. I glanced at the screen and, again, my heart raced. It was him. Again.

I felt like my limbs were frozen. A part of me wanted to pick the phone up....to listen to his voice again - that voice that had once made me smile each time I heard it. But the cold, rational side of me insisted that I remained stationary and leave him to call till he was exhausted.
I remember the first day we met. It wasn't exactly a love at first sight story because I honestly didn't think much of him at our first meeting - if I thought anything at all. It was at a small birthday soiree for a mutual friend and I remember at that point that I had been completely taken in by someone else, a dark charming young man named Uche whose wit and smile held the entire room in his thrall and, at a point, it began to feel like we were all there for him and not the celebrant. Mezie, on the other hand, was quiet and at the edge of everything. We barely even registered his presence and I would have completely forgotten he was at the get-together if he had not reminded me himself the next time we encountered each other - this time at the mall close to my father's house. Somehow, he remembered my name and smiled shyly when an embarassed me told him I couldn't remember his.

"Happens all the time", he said and I instantly felt worse.

The second meeting was more memorable though. He was a bit more conversational - even though his voice barely rose above a whisper and he seemed to blush on cue. Maybe I took better notice of him because Uche wasn't there, I teased him sometime after we had started dating to which he replied with silence and a tight-lipped smile and I had to wrap him in my arms and gave him a peck on his nose. The smile this time was genuine. I never teased him with that again.

A sudden silence brought me back to the present. The phone had stopped ringing but the locksreen notification told me I had ten missed calls. All from the same number. Calls I knew I wasn't going to return, though part of me wanted to one-up that by driving all the way back to his house and telling him I had forgiven him and we could just continue like nothing had happened.

Again.

The phone vibrated. This time, it was a text message. I unlocked the phone and the message, the latest in a long line of unreplied messages was there. Unlike the previous ones though, this one was only three short sentences long.

"Nnenna please, I beg you, come home. At least, let's talk. Please."

I could feel the tears begin to well up in my eyes.

I was beginning to second guess myself. Clearly he loves me, I told myself. Why then am I be putting him through this pain? I looked up from the phone to the mirror on the wall opposite my bed and my answer was there, on my face - a long scar that ran from just the corner of my left eye down to my cheek.

This wasn't love.

"But Nne, you know some men show their love in different ways," Mama had said when I had just been discharged from the hospital, still sporting the dressing on the wound on my face.

"Mama, is this what you call love?" I replied in a voice that was colder than steel on a harmattan morning. I pointed at the covered wound. "Is this what you call love? If I had died, would you have accepted that daft excuse from him - that he did this to me out of love?"

Mama sighed.

"I understand, Nne. He shouldn't have hit you - "

"Mama, this is not the first or second or third time. How many times have you and Nze come to see me in the hospital after being brutalized by that.....that animal. That inhuman being. How many?"

Mama was silent.

"Aren't you bothered, Mama, that I'm the only one of your daughters who has to run here after each disagreement with her husband because he always gets violent? Chioma is married, as are Adaku and Adanna. None of them have ever come to spend an unplanned vacation with you and Nze due to being battered by their husbands. Even your sons Obi and Emeka - have their wives ever come to complain to you that they have laid a finger on either of them?"

"Your father and I raised them well," Mama replied, the pride decipherable in her voice.

"Then why do I have to suffer Mama, because my husband's parent's probably didn't raise him well?"

Mama was silent for a few seconds.

"I understand how you feel, Nne. But you know how some people get when they are angry. They lose control and you'll just have to learn how to calm - "

"Lose control?" I hissed, my voice rising with each sentence. "Lose control? You and Nze have been married for close to fifty years. We know when you both argue or disagree or fight. Yet not once has either of you hit the other with their hand - not to talk of the metal buckle of a belt!" I didn't realize I was pointing at the wound again. "I warned you before we got married, Mama, that Mezie's temper is uncontrollable and I wanted to end things. But you pushed me to go ahead.....told me I could change him.....that I should just work on him and put the matter in my prayers. Now look at what that has gotten me! LOOK! Even though he saw the blood streaming from my head, he kept hitting me, kicking me while I was bleeding on the floor, begging him to stop and shouting for help. What if I had died, Mama? Would my death be worth it because someone lost control? WOULD IT?!

Mama sighed again and was silent for a few seconds.

"So what do you want to do now?" She asked finally.

My shoulders sagged and I sank back into the sofa, only just realizing that tears were falling freely from my eyes.

"I don't know, Mama."

We were silent for a few seconds, the silence only broken by the sound of the old clock ticking somewhere behind me.

" What I do know is that nothing....nothing on this earth or beyond will make me go back to that man. I will not be the latest casualty of men who can't control their temper. My kids will not grow up watching this man hit me each time he gets angry and think it is okay to hit people when they are angry. I won't go back, Mama."

"Well........it is your decision. I am just advising you because I know each marriage has its own challenges. Your children still need their father. Besides, you know how people look at divorcees..."

I fixed a cold, hard gaze on my mother.

"Mama, he called me a shameless LovePeddler right before my children. Beat me right in front of them repeatedly. God forbid that I would allow that man's toxic behaviour influence my kids. If you and Nze are tired of seeing my face here, I would take my things and my kids to a hotel right now and stay there till I find an apartment because it seems to me that you are on his side and not mine!"

"No o," Mama protested raising her hands and showing me her palms. "We are always on your side. No child of ours would live in a hotel when this house is here, empty, save for me and your father. We just want to be sure you know what you are doing. If this is your decision, I will support you and I am sure your father will too."

A sudden sound snapped me out of that memory. The phone was ringing again.

I glanced at the screen to check who was calling.

Picked up the phone.

And flung it at the wall as hard as I could.
