FamilyRe: My Boss is Toasting Me. Should I tell My Husband? by Seun(mod): 4:50pm On Aug 02, 2005
Tell your husband, and start searching for another job.  I've given the advice 3 times now.  This is a situation in which you're at risk of losing both your job and the trust your husband, but I'll advice you to place more value on the trust of your husband and tell him today.  Please do this the whole situation gets more complicated, thanks.

"Suffering and smiling" is what Fela calls this. We have constant water suppy, but occasionally it is unavailable. Funny! Anyway, I understand the reasoning behind this error.

Prior to one disastrous semester at OAU-Ife in which I actually missed 4 exams, the only time I ad failed an exam was in JSS 1 when I scored 39 (or 35) in French Language. Less than years and one lesson teacher later, in the WAEC JSCE, I scored an A in French Language.

That settles it, then. MTN is a black-controlled company. We can now go back to other issues.

Jokes EtcRe: Lead Implants: A Cure for Terrorism by Seun(mod): 4:18pm On Aug 01, 2005
No, it's not only muslims. Remember the Irish Republican Army? Well, it's not a muslim organization, is it?

The truth is that organized criminals, some of whom are terrorists, like to hide under the cover of religion or racial/ethnic pride. I assure you, Bin Laden is not any more religious than Tai Solarin, but he uses iIlam merely as a tool to recruit followers.

If we want peace, it is important not to blame religious bodies or racial/ethnic groups for the actions of this new brand of criminals known as terrorists. We even have some in Nigeria who are stealing oil and stockpiling arms in the name of 'South-South Emancipation'.

Perhaps a little bit more color might help (consider changing the grey borders to something else). Nice icons, by the way. Where did you get them? (I want some too!)

A clear statement of what kind of people you want on your community should also help. People need to know if they will fit into your community!

How right you are, Nike. London, I hear, is a dirty and crowded city. Lagos is just like that, but I'm sure you don't have beautiful refuse dumps like ours in London!

Go ahead and 'fail' your children at every opportunity so they'll know how bad they've messed up. And while you're at it, make sure you never, ever praise them so their heads will not get swollen. Amen! grin

Economist in the house save my neck!
The economists in the house have already spoken, but you people are not listening. The 1000 naira note does not affect inflation.

Economists and accountants, please help me! I don't want people to read this thread and conclude that the introduction of the new notes will lead to inflation!

Dating And Meet-up ZoneRe: Friendship Needed by Seun(mod): 1:04am On Aug 01, 2005
This is a heartwarming direction for the forum, but I'm concerned that friends made this way will bring more dissapointment than anything else. If you're particiipating actively in the forum and you notice an interesting person and decide to become friends with the person, it would be a different matter and perhaps more likely to work out well.

Just a passing thought, though.

Let's face it, ladies, if you're not married to your current boyfriend then there's no need to say an outright "no" to other "toasters". Afterall, if you're not yet married, then anything can happen!

Let's learn to use common sense to govern our "love lives"!
BusinessRe: Global Business Outsourcing and Nigeria by Seun(mod): 12:37am On Aug 01, 2005
Outsourcing is defined as the management and/or day-to-day execution of an entire business function by a third party service provider.

Outsourcing and out-tasking involve transferring a significant amount of management control to the supplier. Buying products from another entity is not outsourcing or out-tasking, but merely a vendor relationship. Likewise, buying services from a provider is not necessarily outsourcing or out-tasking.  Outsourcing always involves a considerable degree of two-way information exchange, co-ordination, and trust.
Wikipedia on Outsourcing (for the uninitiated)

For outsourcing to work, we need to have:
- A sufficiently well educated workforce.
- Low-cost telecommunications and other forms of infrastructure.

Right now, Internet access is too expensive in most cities, and we don't even have broadband yet. Most of our graduates are said to be half-baked, and the good ones are either engaged in plum jobs in oil companies and multinationals, or desperate to travel out. Don't even get me started about our erratic power supply (thanks to almighty NEPA - sorry, PHCN).

So we're not going to be another India anytime soon.

(You know what? I'm not bothered. I want Nigeria to focus on leadership in innovation and entrepreneurship. Instead of doing lower-level jobs for other countries, let's create practical technology for ourselves and let's export that technology to the outside world. The world is at a point where there's a lot of knowledge out there that hasn't been applied; let's be the ones scrambling to use the available technology in the world to achieve practical aims while the world powers are busy sending human beings to space and developing more advanced weapons to destroy each other)

But to answer your question, I don't believe that Nigeria will be benefitting from outsourcing on a large scale anytime soon.

ComputersRe: What Made You Switch to Linux? by Seun(mod): 5:20pm On Jul 30, 2005
My reasons are very similar to those of joftech.
[li]I started using Linux because I was a religious freak and I saw software piracy as a sin.[/li]
[li]I continued to use Linux exclusively because I discovered that all Linux distributions come with a really good, integrated software development environment and at that time I was trying to improve my programming.[/li]
[li]I stopped using Linux when I got Internet Access and learnt to download and run the same rich open source applications available to Linux users and run them on my Windows XP based system alongside the popular games and applications that only run on Windows.  (I guess that makes me a software pirate sad)[/li]
I guess I might start using Linux again if and when Microsoft steps up its efforts agaisnt software piracy among individuals and in small businesses. By then Linux would have improved so much beyond what it was when I stopped using it!
