[li]The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators in Nigeria (ALTON) has described the growing fears over certain GSM numbers associated with death, as a "complete hoax, from the telecommunications engineering point of view”. Last week, a major controversy broke out in the country, particularly in Lagos, that receivers of calls from certain GSM numbers would faint or die.[/li]
"It's all a big hoax" [by Sola Fanawopo Monday, July 26, 2004]
[li]A new Nigerian movie titled 'Abuja Lowo Wa' is currently being shot to unravel the genesis of the rumour ... the film will shock Nigerians when they realise that the rumour started from a mere failed business call received by an Abuja-based business man.[/li]
Balancing Act
[li]A Nigerian mobile telephone firm is seeking to quash a widespread rumour that users answering calls from two "killer numbers" have been struck dead on the spot. Over the weekend Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, was gripped by reports that calls from the numbers 0802 311 1999 and 0802 222 5999 had slain subscribers who answered them. "This is an absolute hoax ... ignore it," Emeka Oparah, a spokesman for V-mobile, the country's second largest GSM provider, said in a statement. "We wish to state categorically that from an engineering point of view, it is absolutely impracticable, and there is no such record whatsoever anywhere in the world, that anyone has died or can die from merely receiving or making a phone call on GSM or any other telecommunications platform", it said.[/li]
Smh I hope I've helped to answer this question a little bit. I'd like to invite other members of this forum to tell gem whatever they can remember about the "killer GSM" rumor. |

Hello, A recent (Guardian July 20, 2005) advertorial by MCL Solutions Limited claims that Nigerian banks, in a desperate attempt to stay afloat, may be defrauding their customers by levying various excess charges. They claim to have recovered sums as large as 560 million naira on behalf of their clients. According to the advertorial, your bank may be defrauding you in one of the following ways:
[li]Calculation of Interest (charges payable to the bank) at an un-agreed rate[/li] [li]Calculation of COT on funds reversal, returned cheque entry, transfer of money within the same bank, and other miscellanous charges which they are not supposed to charge COT on?[/li] [li]Calculation of COT (Commission on Turnover) at a rate higher than your agreement with the bank.[/li] [li]Calculation of interest on normal overdraft at the rate that's supposed to be used for excess overdraft.[/li] [li]Backdating of transaction dates (e.g. overdraft due date) to extract more charges from the account holder.[/li] [li]Allowing cheques from one account holder to hit her account as well as yours ( I guess this means we should take the time to double-check our bank charges to make sure we're not being defrauded! Companies, especially, should be vigilant enough to do this since they could potentially lose millions. The MCL people (email) want us to use their "banker software" for this purpose, though it can definitely be done with a spreadsheet or manual calculator. Have you had any experience that confirms or contradicts the information contained in this advertorial? Do you have any additional information that might enlighten us? Please feel free to share what you have with the rest of us. Thanks. |
kazey: One thing that would attract one man is the same thing that would repel another manVery true. For example, I'm the kind of person that simply doesn't appreciate the 'hard-to-get' game. I believe that if a lady wants a relationship she should go for it, otherwise she should simply say "I don't know, ask me again next month" if she's not sure or "no" if she's sure she absolutely doesn't want you. I find the idea that you should say "no" when you really mean "yes" absolutely ridiculous! |

Courtship should refer to when the relationship is already on. That is after she has said 'yes' to your marriage proposal. I don't believe in wasting time either; it is not compulsory for you to wait until you're ready to start 'breeding' before you get married! The moment you're ready to combine your life together, do it. |
Yes, CimonJorr, new topics are usually placed in the 'Chatterbox' Forum by default (I think I'll rename it and call it 'sandbox') but sometimes a high-quality topic can appear on the home page without having any replies. So it's best to check both the 'Chatterbox' forum and the Nairaland.com home page. |
Acepted! But remember, your "early posts" must be insightful and informative, which means that if you're not an expert on a particular topic you must spend a lot of time doing research on the topic. Some web resources that will help you in your research: - Wikipedia, the world's largest web encyclopedia - www.wikipedia.org - Google, arguably the most accurate search engine - www.google.com - Google News, for the latest news on the web - news.google.com. - Yahoo Web Directory, for human-reviewed websites - dir.yahoo.com - Authority Sites on each topic, which you can find using google. Hope this helps, Seun. |

The first volunteer position has been thrown open to members of the forum. I'd like to invite you to join the Nairaland Forum Early Posters' Squad. Thanks. |
Hello there, I'm pleased to invite all Nairaland Users to volunteer to become members of our "Early Posting Squad". Members of the Early Posting Squad will be expected make deliberate effort to contribute insightful and informative comments to new topics. This will encourage the other members of the forum to add their own comments. A new topic is one that has less than 4 replies. Those choose to join the Early Posting Squad are more likely to be chosen for higher responsibilities like moderation or editing in the future. To indicate your interest in becoming an "Early Poster", just reply this thread accordingly and start doing the job. Acceptance is automatic. Once you've replied and I see any insightful and informative post of yours among the first 4 replies to any topic in the main forum, I'll know that you're doing your work as an "Early Poster" and you'll get the appreciation and recognition that you deserve. I appreciate the tremendous support you've given me each time I've called for volunteers. Best Regards, Seun. |
No-one else wants to contribute? |
Hello, I make a lot of decisions while running this forum. Some of these decisions move the forum forward while others do not. Some of them I am sure of while I might have doubts about others. I'm creating this thread as a way of letting people know of those times when I'm not so sure about a decision that affects them. I think this thread is useful because an entry on this log is the closest some people will get to actually recieving an apology. I "don't negotiate with terrorists" (I don't apologize to troublemakers), but I want to have a way of letting the community know when I feel I might possibly be wrong. That is the purpose of this thread. You can read, but you can't post! Thanks. |
Tayotina, that is contradictory! If he's free to speak his mind, then he's free to refer to anybody he likes. However, Nairaland happens to be the private property of a certain person who has 'decreed' that personal attacks are not allowed on the open forum! So has Laide o made her choice? Well, there's another lady on the forum who is looking for a man! |
(In line with Jogego's comment above) I run the Nairaland forum from home and I think I like the lifestyle. I'll probably need an office when I start hiring employees, though. I believe parents should spend time with their children instead of 'outsourcing' the training and instilling of morals to schoolteachers who may not share the parents' values. So if the "stay-at-home husband" gets to do this it's only a privilege. (I'm not going to be any woman's houseboy even if I'm working from home, but it'd be nice to be able to mould the children's future instead of working out all day and being available only when they are asleep! Parents should endeavour to grow with their children to minimize clashes when they are older and their way of thinking is all different. But the idea of being "a househusband, taking care of the babies while your wife works, doing the home stuff and waiting at month end for your wife to give you pocket money" is too radical for me. My ego has suffered enough already from a lifetime of having to ask my parents for money! So if my wife gets a job with the United Nations I might follow her, but I'll definitely carry my business along with me. Ain't begging no woman for money, oh no! |

This is a funny and challenging question to those who believe in evolution, but as hot-angel has demonstrated it's not a difficult question for those who believe in creation. Most Nigerians believe in creation and so we can simply say "God created them male and female. He created the chicken and the cock and they mated together to fertilize the first egg!" So hot-angel's answer is right! If you're a believer in evolution, why don't you show yourself and give us your answer to this question? |
Daily Trust Editorial, July 20 2005 "Last week President Olusegun Obasanjo dropped some of his erstwhile ministers and appointed several newcomers into his cabinet. He also switched the portfolios of some old ministers. As an impetus for better service to the nation, Daily Trust welcomes this development. "However, we regret that some of the appointees do not appear to have a track record of noteworthy personal achievement which we believe should be a requirement to qualify as minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Indeed, it would appear some appointees have been brought on board merely as political pawns to neutralise or appease old players or supplicants in the corridors of power." Hello Kenny, Your description of the game Truth or Dare is probably not clear enough for most people. Here's a more comprehensive description of the game: "Truth or Dare?" is a party game requiring a minimum of two players. The game is very popular with adolescents, but is also played by some adults. Rules One player starts the game by asking another player, "Truth or dare?" If the queried player answers, "Truth," then the questioning player asks a question, usually embarrassing, of the queried player; otherwise, if the queried player answers, "Dare," then the questioning player asks the queried to do something, also usually embarrassing. If the question or dare is unreasonable (the exact definition of unreasonable varies from one playing group to another), then the player may demand another question or another dare instead. After answering the question or doing the dare, the queried player asks "Truth or dare?" of another player and the game proceeds as before. The game can also be played in teams, with all players in a team having to participate in the dare or answer the question. The dares traditionally involve kissing someone or something you do not like, people or dustbins. Truth traditionally also revolves around love or other embarrassing things the person is supposed to have or do. Rumors play a big part in choice of questions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth_or_Dare Other Games That Lovers Play - Chess (for the brainiacs among us). - Monopoly (for those who would like to surpass Dangote) - Ludo (when you lose you don't feel too bad - you can attribute your loss to bad luck) - Snakes and Ladders (same as above). |
Hello, Several people have indicated their interest in some form of chatting facility. Here are my thoughts: - Once a question is answered on the forum the first time, the answers to the question are stored and indexed by search engines so that other people won't have to ask the same questions. This saves everybody's time. - If we launch a chat room on Nairaland, people will start asking questions in the chat room instead of the forum and the quality of the forum will go down. This hurts all the people that are trying to make the forum a success. - Compared to forums, chat rooms are more expensive to manage (control) and difficult to monetize. I don't know any company that is making money from free chatting services! (Nairaland is a business venture). - Hardly do you find a chat room where serious discussions are going on, because those who have knowledge in various domains are too busy to spend their time on chat rooms waiting for someone to ask a question! - A forum that recieves a lot of traffic can give you answers to your questions as fast as any chatroom, but even your answer is not immediately available you can leave the forum and check back for the answer at any convenient time. People can ask and answer questions at whatever time is convenient for them. Based on the above points, I would like to say 'no' to chatting. I believe that it is better for us not to have a chat room on Nairaland. I believe the forum is a more efficient way to interact and we should focus on that. What do you have to say about this? Am I missing something? Seun. |
This has been one of the most difficult transitions to make because it's never easy for an entrepreneur to let go of his(or her) baby! I'm going to change my approach to this recruitment exercise. Each issue that comes up will be given a separate thread so people can know exactly what they're volunteering for. This is going to be a tough hurdle but we'll scale it and it will be a pathway to mega-growth! |
Based on the thread about the discrimination between HND and BSc. in the Nigerian workplace, my opinion is that in your best interest you should go for the University Degree instead of the HND programme. |
Millionaire before the age of 20? How is that possible? How old are you now and how much are you currently worth? Or do you related to Alhaji Aliko Dangote or IBB? ![]() |
Very sweet, but let's see how long you'll be able to maintain that opinion! |
Jogego, this is the first time I am hearing that dripping sweat from the body of a cook adds extra vitamins to the food. ![]() But I can see where you're coming from. You've been eating "white man's food" for so long that even unhygienic food at home now appeals to you! |
Girls lie a lot. All of my close friends that are girls have told me fantastic lies at one time or the other. And what I do is that I ask them "Are you sure?" and when they say yes I just shake my head and usually that is the begining of the end of my friendship with that person. I don't appreciate being lied to at all. The men I know haven't lied to me as much as my female friends have. The only time a boy/man lies is when he's busy 'toasting' (wooing) a girl/woman. This is because the only thing girls enjoy more than telling lies is listening to lies! |
I do not think Danasco deserves this girl if she's as wonderful as he says she is. This is the same person that refused to even return a girl's calls just because he found that she was partially disabled. Leave the poor girl alone and let a better guy have her! I believe you're nothing but a heartless player; the kind of person who makes me feel ashamed to be a man! |
Danasco, Your use of the phrase "one of my girlfriends" indicates that you're double-dating. Why are you doing this? I think you should discontinue the relationship since you have some other girlfriends. I don't see why you should be prolonging a relationship that is definitely going to end with betrayal and heartbreak, all in the name of "love" Seun. |
