Eveezy: Well, lyk I said, dnt allow the dog see u often with so many strangers, nd dogs dt re chained dwn tend to be more aggresive nd I also mentioned dt it shouldn't be done all tru d dogs life its only meant for d period u want him to transform to d dog u want because if u leave it restrained @ all tym it could cause sum behavioural problems nd definitely u mst let ur dog roam round ur compound to enable it knw its teritory nd whr his teritorial aggression shuld end.nd occasionally to get it to bark especially if it doesn't bark, u keep d food far from its reach until it barksI'm not doubting that your method works. What I'm saying is that it can be made less unpleasant. You allow your dogs to move around freely and enjoy happiness and then you suddenly start chaining them and provoking them with food for several months in order to 'transform' them. Your transformation process is mentally torturous for a dog that has always been allowed to move around freely. Mental torture is not needed. It is better to start restricting the puppy from day 1 and not allowing him to see strangers within his territory. "If I do that, how will he be socialized in order to become fearless?" Well, you should socialize him only outside your compound. Take him out for socialization. I don't want my dog to bark because he is chained down or because he is hungry. I want him to bark only to protect his territory and owner. |

On the first night I got him, I prepared Indomie and corned beef for him and poured it into a plastic bowl. Just after serving him, I stuck a finger into the bowl to check the temperature of the Indomie because I thought it might be too hot. He bit me instantly. It was just a warning bite, though, so it was painful but didnt penetrate my skin. Only after biting me did he start growling. Dogs tend to display food aggression when fed something better than what they usually eat, e.g. a big piece of meat. I think Sloan was intoxicated by the smell of the corned beef. While we were playing the next day, he bit me again for trying to take a tennis ball from his mouth. But that was a warning bite also, just painful but with no injury. However, he also bit a guest that entered into the compound because my handiman "thought he wanted to play" with the guest and (disobediently) decided to allow it. This was not a warning bite as the guest had puncture wounds on his elbow. Due to these incidents, I learned that my dog doesn't show obvious signs before biting, which is bad, but I also learned that he is willing to bite, which is something I need from him. I learned that he has "resource guarding" issues which means it's not safe to take things he values highly away from him. I learned to read his body language when he is in resource guarding mode; while he does not growl, he displays other signs like going stiff, lowering his head ominously, and eyeing me with the corner of his eye ("whale eye" . I learned to first grab his collar and pull him back if I really needed to take anything from him and he was showing those signs, so the biting stopped. |
I got Sloan from a part-time breeder who said he was selling his dogs. His 18 month old 'sister' was advertised on a classifieds site. When I went to check her out, she turned out to be smaller than expected and too shy for my liking. I prefer confident, curious, fearless dogs. Fortunately, when we asked to see the breeder's other dogs, out came Sloan. He had the same look and was taller and bigger. He greeted his owners and then jumped to greet me before realising that he didn't know me and moving on. That bumbling behaviour really got me, so I decided on the spot to buy him instead even though the seller said he didn't want to sell him yet and charged me 15k more for him. When I asked why he was not barking at us, the seller said he only barks at night. The seller asked me to take him for a walk to show me how hard he pulls when he is on the leash. He pulled so hard that I could not control him at all. Even "leash corrections" had no effect on him. He almost broke my fingers as he dragged me around like a piece of paper. I felt that his tenacity would serve me well. The seller told me that he has fought with other dogs including a 9 month old Caucasian puppy that he killed. Even after he killed he puppy he wouldn't let anyone get close to the carcass. I felt that his dog fighting tendencies wouldn't be a problem for me because I have no other (male) dog. I bought him & brought him home. He was completely unresponsive to calls and not interested in interacting with me at all until I brought out my secret weapons from the fridge: corned beef & tinned tuna! I had been reading books about clicker training so I started that on the same day, rewarding him for looking at me. I posted reports about his training on this forum, but they were lost, so I'm starting afresh here.

Orabelle: I wanted to deactivate my alto moniker so I posted with my main moniker asking why I can't decrivate and somebody quoted me to say she has been trying to and before I could say jack seun banned my main moniker for 10 years saying I helped a member deactivate. You wanted me to make your account inactive, so I did. Now you have created a new account which we must ban. I don't understand you. |
We thank you for your message of solidarity, sir. |
Timzy234: Nairaland's U.I has remained the same over the years, ugly as hell. What are the programmers doing?Adding new features to Nairaland. They are not artists. Some have made efforts to suggest new designs but none has satisfied requirements. |
Dogs can easily contract the virus if they are exposed to the contaminated meat or fluids of infected animals.http://www.dogchannel.com/dog-news/2014/08/ebola-and-our-pets.aspx Some studies have shown that dogs may experience asymptomatic Ebola infections (that is, they may have the virus in their bodies but do not get sick). Human infections to date have not been linked to dogs.https://www.internationalsos.com/ebola/index.cfm?content_id=410&language_id=ENG |
I believe in buying adult dogs. You can literally buy your way into their hearts by using lots of treats and positive training methods that do not encourage aggression. The advantage is not having to spend money on the dog until he grows up before realising that he doesn't have the attributes that you desire, such as territorial aggression, size, intelligence, courage, or child-friendliness. With an adult dog, you know what you are getting. If you had bought this dog as a cute puppy, you may have been surprised when he grew up and started fighting with other dogs. In this case, the dog's character is known, because he's an adult, so you can make an informed decision about whether to buy him. |
I'm always interested in hiring good programmers, actually. |
What's the reason for sale? What's her height & weight? Can you post more pictures please? Can you tell us about her bite history also? |
I hereby charge the mods to ban anyone who violates rule 10 by posting pictures without permission (up to 1 year) I also ask them to ban anyone who posts crap about Nairaland instead of just reporting the violations (up to 30 days) |
Congrats. Did you get to see her mummy and daddy? How old is she? She looks extremely young, so you have to take extra special care of her. |

I don't like dogs, but I must confess that I am smitten by this picture. It takes special care to keep them looking like that. You need to brush the hair every day, bath it with special shampoo frequently, and pay professional groomers to trim their hair every month or so it retains a pleasant shape. Most Nigerians can't provide that level of care (example). |
If you like the parents' looks and their size and behaviour, buy the puppies. 100% purity doesn't matter much unless you plan to breed them. |
How old are they? Do you have pictures of the parents? Can you post pictures with the puppies, their mother, and their owner together? |
GenBuhari: When I discovered that Abacha never looted and was a great leaderAbacha, Idi Amin and Buhari. All misunderstood, all great leaders. So, can we expect Buhari to rule like the other two if he gets into power? |
@GenBuhari: What is your opinion of Idi Amin? Do you think he was a good person and leader? Do you see any similarities between him and GMB? |
@eveezy: your post is super & comprehensive!! however it is unnecessary to torture the dog by withholding his food or over-isolating him. My dog eats delicious orobo chicken lap every day, and immediately after eating he goes back to his duty post with more aggression than before eating. He sleeps and acts sluggish when he has not eaten. A well fed dog barks louder and bites harder than a hungry dog because he has more energy. And while it's true that a guard dog should be isolated from strangers, he should be allowed to roam the compound when strangers aren't around. |
When it comes to buying adult dogs, what you see is what you get. If you like the dog's behaviour and her size and looks, buy her. That's all. |
