Jobs/VacanciesVacancy For Web Developer (Expired!) by Seun(mod):
A small but influential web publishing concern needs a full-time software developer to manage and develop a couple of heavily trafficked dynamic websites written in Python and running on MySQL databases, because their current programmer is moving on next month.

The candidate should be talented, enthusiastic, hardworking and productive. He/she should be capable of writing good SQL queries and writing elegant programs to exceed requirements. He/she should have a genuine understanding of web technologies, capable of functioning with or without frameworks.

He/she should also be comfortable with Linux server management or willing to learn. Your sysadmin duties will involve being ready to rush online at any time of the day or night to resolve server issues. The ability to design original and beautiful web themes to specification won't hurt your chances.

If interested, please send your application, CV, and portfolio (if any) to ASAP. See also: code challenge.

What's wrong with the color?

Pls can u add a user display box picture to all users. Meanwhile it should be very small and hyperlinked to each user profile, it will make NL look more lively than ever. At the same time pls create personal inbox.to facilitate movement of mails btw friends.

Gbammm over and out
We're not inclined to do this at this time. Nairalanders really value their anonymity. Content is king.

New Nairaland has been on for less than 2 months. Does this issue predate New Nairaland?

WebmastersRe: Fine-tuning The New Nairaland: A Programmer’s Perspective by Seun(mod): 1:17pm On Mar 21, 2012
Nice suggestions. Problem 1 and Problem 2 are by design. A fix for problem 3 was planned, but not implemented earlier because I was not experiencing any issues with the width on my laptop. The solution you proposed would not have worked, though. Fixed it just now!!

As an atheist, I have contributed Nairaland to humanity, and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Of course I will improve my project management skills, because I strive for continual improvement, but you don't seem to be grasping the magnitude of what we've achieved here. We wrote a forum script from scratch in a few months and deployed it on the busiest web forum in Africa, and things have been humming along nicely as if it was a routine UI upgrade. Our untested script goes down less frequently than the average Nigerian bank server, and comes back up in minutes. It's a momentous achievement! There have been mistakes here and there but I can't think of any human endeavor without mistakes. Those mistakes do not in any way diminish the magnitude of our achievement. The Challenger space shuttle exploded with astronauts on board, but we still respect NASA's thorough development process!

That aside, the mobile UI issue is my call. If it's a mistake, it's my mistake. I hereby take responsibility for it. I have limited cognitive and financial resources, so I try to conserve them by making some "lazy" decisions. I just don't see the sense in developing a separate desktop and mobile UI for every new feature. It's not as simple as implementing a different view, because the mobile UI will have different features, which will complicate the entire code-base. If your code-base is too complicated, it becomes more difficult to fix bugs and add new features over time. Simple things are far more manageable on the long run. I also notice that mobile users don't like limited mobile sites. They want to have access to the full features of the site, and that's what we're offering them.
WebmastersRe: This New Nairaland Is Weird (my Views) by Seun(mod): 7:07pm On Mar 20, 2012
The antispam bot issue is real. It started two days ago due to an awful bug that was exposed by a configuration change that should have had nothing to do with the antispam bot. Since then it's not been checking posts, and mods (especially me) have been forced to remove spam posts manually. So sorry about this. The way it was presented, I thought you were saying the spam has increased since we switched to new nairaland, which is false. It started just 2 days ago.
WebmastersRe: This New Nairaland Is Weird (my Views) by Seun(mod): 5:08pm On Mar 20, 2012
Mine is not only 'mark as read'. Is there a problem with the notification system? I don't get email notifications anymore.
Most users don't like email notifications, but we will implement that if we have to.

Did you notice the increase in spam topics? What could be the cause?
There has been no increase in spam topic as a result of the transition to New Nairaland.
WebmastersRe: This New Nairaland Is Weird (my Views) by Seun(mod): 4:41pm On Mar 20, 2012
@yawa-ti-de: At first I was bewildered by all the random things you typed, but eventually, I figured out what you were trying to say. Your only problem with New Nairaland is the lack of a 'mark as read' feature. We can implement that. It won't be a problem. As a well-respected techie, you should be able to express your desires concisely and accurately in a form that can be acted upon. All the jarasis you added only distracted the reader from the actual issue you're having, which is the lack of the 'mark as read' feature. It has nothing to do with 'mobile'.

Hello,

New Nairaland was designed to work perfectly on mobile phones, but some people have reported that it doesn't look good on their phones. If you have that problem, please post about it on this thread, using the format below:
1) Detailed description of the problem you're experiencing with new Nairaland at the moment.
2) The exact name and model of the phone with which you're currently experiencing the problem.
3) The mobile phone browser with which you browse Nairaland when you experience this problem.

We're serious about making New Nairaland usable and functional for everyone.

Thanks!

Nairaland GeneralRe: The New Nairaland Is Such A Bad Experiment by Seun(mod): 2:46pm On Mar 18, 2012
We cannot revert the whole thing. It's technically very difficult and expensive and would hurt our traffic immensely. That would be suicide. What we can do, however, is correct specific things that are wrong with the new Nairaland. We've corrected saturation, brightness, and readability of board pages, and we will correct more things. This is our platform, and we can do anything we want with it. Our imagination is the limit to what we can achieve here.
