Why can't you post the information here so that others can learn. Let's not be selfish with information.

Byschool do you mean primary school, secondary school, or higher education?
Most traders and mechanics and conductors have been to primary school at least.

with forensics these days and the appeal process, i don't see many people that would be wrongfully convicted.
Forensics In Nigeria? Who dash monkey banana? The same police would say they have no fuel in their cars?

You will be surprised if you learn about the sort of ridiculous evidence that is used to convict people. You see blood on a knife, you don't even bother to find out if it is human blood, or whose blood it is, and you condemn the person to death. You have autopsies that are mostly based on guesswork. You have people who are arrested for "murder by witchcraft". The police is authorized to torture people to the point where they start confessing to what they didn't do, and they are convicted based on that.

No, such a chaotic and random process should not be allowed to result in capital punishment. A dead man/woman cannot appeal. And a poor man cannot challenge a wrongful conviction - where will he get a good lawyer? We don't have to be bloodthirsty in dealing with crime.
PoliticsRe: Government's Estimate On Energy Need, Very Faulty by Seun(mod): 2:31pm On Apr 14, 2008
BY the way 5W bulbs cannot replace 50W bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs are only 4 times more efficient at best, but they are more expensive and not very good for your eyes.

Power rationing is not the answer. Nigeria is not a socialist country and such nonsense doesn't even work in socialist countries. What we need is privatization. The demand for power is suppressed, once the industry is liberated, it will explode. There's no way the government can manage it all. What we need is for the electricity to be sold at a price that is sustainable to those who need it most.

The electricity powering an air-conditioner in the office of an entrepreneur can do more to improve the economy than electricity provided to power the television of a lazy, jobless man sitting at home. Also, when people are hot, they get angry easily. They start riots, etc.

PoliticsRe: Government's Estimate On Energy Need, Very Faulty by Seun(mod): 1:13pm On Apr 14, 2008
We live in a hot climate. When electricity becomes stable, people will start using air conditioners, which use much more power. Will the government ban that too?
TV/MoviesRe: Developing My Little Super Hero Movie by Seun(mod): 8:28pm On Apr 13, 2008
As a result of my screen-writing forum experience, I've realized something my various loglines and synopses so far have lacked. Magic! An ironic hook. Something that makes the movie a must-see.

Actually, my movie has a hook of sorts. It's a Nigerian super hero story. How many times have you watched a Nigerian super hero story? Wouldn't you just want to see what a Nigerian super hero looks like? Heck, even an Indian super hero movie would interest me. It doesn't have to be great, it just has to be a basically entertaining super-hero movie in an authentic Nigerian setting.

But I can do better than that.

I can create a story with such a strong hook that it would attract to people who may neither be Nigerians nor eager fans of the super hero genre. That's what I'm working on at the moment. I'm going back to square one. Re-imagining everything. This isn't too hard because I'm throwing away just two synopses and a dozen or so loglines. No knowledge is lost, they say, so it's no loss really.

According to one of my screenwriting books, a super-hero story is not really about saving the world, but about the super-hero's struggle to cope with the average people all around him. The gifted soul who is misunderstood by everybody (I can identify with that). And when I think about all the super hero stories I've loved, apart from saving the world, the super heroes had to struggle with problems caused by the people's reaction to their unique abilities. Xmen vs mutant registration, the cure. Spiderman versus the hostile press. The Incredibles versus malpractice lawsuits.

I'm convinced.

My super hero won't just be struggling to make the world a better place. She will also be struggling to cope. This is not to suggest that saving the world isn't important. It is what makes them heroes, not whiners.

He or she. Or they. So stay tuned. wink And wish me luck!
TV/MoviesRe: Developing My Little Super Hero Movie by Seun(mod): 8:18pm On Apr 13, 2008
Thanks, beneli. The principles you listed could help me make my heroines powers more believable.

I also like what you said here:
So somebody who can influences the cognitive processes of others would be a real 'superhero(oine)'.
Exactly! My first story consultant didn't seem to realize how badass and effective such powers could be.
So powerful, in fact, that I have to invent significant limitations to her powers to give the bad guys a chance.

Electricity demand is not a constant. It grows with time and availability. Forget about power stability.

Some or most of the so called pure water are made in people's backyard . . . or so I hear.

What sort of purification process do they go through?
On TV I saw the machines they use. I think the process involves filtration and chemical treatment.

PoliticsRe: Capital Punishment by Seun(mod): 11:53pm On Apr 12, 2008
Capital punishment should only be an option if all of the following apply:
- In cases of first degree murder.
- If there is overwhelming physical evidence supporting the conviction.
- If the victims (more than one) were tortured before they were killed.

Even in such cases, we should be careful because the death sentence is irreversible because: in countries like Nigeria, where the police is not equipped to properly investigate crime, it's very easy for an innocent person to be wrongly convicted. Better safe than sorry.
BusinessRe: Pure Water Now 10 Naira Per Sachet! by Seun(mod): 11:45pm On Apr 12, 2008
Wrong! We have a double digit inflation rate yet the cost of pure water has remained 5 naira for almost a decade. The price increase is long overdue. And government failure has nothing to do with this, really. It's just reality. And pure water is purer than the alternatives, to be sincere. NAFDAC goes through a lot of trouble to ensure that they have machines to properly purify the water they package.

The price increase is surely driven by the cost of the nylon packing and printing. It's overdue anyway.

@beneli: Thanks. Can you tell me some of the psychology laws I may need to pay attention to?
---
I don't think I achieved very much by asking writers on a popular Internet forums to comment on my logline. I was unable to satisfy them even after several rewriting attempts, because:
- Everything you can think of has already been done in Hollywood.
- Cultural differences: What interests a Nigerian may not impress an American.
- A logline is not enough to judge a story, unless the concept hasn't been done before.
- They are bad people and they don' want me to succeed! smiley

So I'm going to continue writing the story for my own personal enjoyment. I hope to come up with a story that excites me from page 1 to page 90. If it excites me, maybe it will excite you. If not, at least I'll get to watch it over and over again on my PC.
